Its hard to believe we have already used up the first two months of this year and there<br />
is only one month left before we reluctantly let go of day light savings, let's hope the<br />
beautiful weather keeps rolling on for many months to come because we waited long<br />
enough for it. It’s great to see our patrons making use of our fabulous outdoor dining<br />
area during these beautiful summer evenings and to hear the good comments on the<br />
refurbished restaurant and new menu.<br />
As I always say life is full of changes, some are good some not so good. The club<br />
farewelled Jacob our Bar Manager at Xmas and now Bonita our Functions & Marketing<br />
Manager is leaving us early in <strong>March</strong>. We were sorry to see Jacob go and also Bonita.<br />
Bonita has certainly done some great work in the time she has been with us. All of our<br />
in house advertising, posters, newsletters, menus etc have been done by her along with<br />
creating an informative and interesting website and Facebook page.<br />
Bonita has been the co-ordinator for all room hires for club members, sections and<br />
outside groups for functions & activities and the organiser of our very successful annual<br />
Pink Ribbon fundraising function and our Gala Day and NZ Cup Day events and many<br />
other events. Her expertise and input into these events will be very much missed not<br />
to mention her appearance as Princess on our Gala Day, I would like to thank her and<br />
wish her well.<br />

Summer certainly arrived last month so I hope everyone had a chance to enjoy<br />
(or survive!) the warmer weather, a couple of the 30+ degrees had us all searching for<br />
a nice covered area with a bit of shade, and a cool refreshment.<br />
We have had a couple of key personnel changes over the last couple of months. You<br />
will be aware that Jacob has moved on to look at setting up his own business but very<br />
generously worked an extended notice period to help us get organised before his<br />
departure. He gave a couple of years of sterling service to the Club and leaves with the<br />
bar operations in a better position after his contribution. At this stage we are<br />
recruiting for his position and are on the lookout for a suitable replacement.<br />
This edition of the Club’s monthly newsletter will also be the last from the current<br />
Editor (but hopefully Bonita will be able to assist over then next month or so during<br />
transition). Bonita has been offered an opportunity in a new role in the “sports &<br />
fitness” market which offers new challenges and will extend her professionally into<br />
new areas. Bonita has been with the Club for three and a half years and has added<br />
structure and a new level of creativity to her position which has seen the standard of<br />
both internal and external marketing improve dramatically. This has also carried over<br />
into our function and catering areas with a number of new functions and repeat business<br />
secured.<br />
I personally wish them both every success and thank them for their support and the<br />
valued contribution that they have made in their respective time with the Woolston<br />
Club.<br />
We also have the pleasure of announcing the new appointment of Vicky Laird to the<br />
role of “Functions & Marketing Manager”. She will replace Bonita and has started with<br />
us this month. Vicky is across from the UK with the long term view to settling in New<br />
Zealand and comes with lots of fantastic experience that will assist her in this busy role<br />
and she should prove a real asset moving forward. It would be great if you can<br />
welcome her to the Club as she settles in.<br />
First week of the Super 18 tipping competition is under the belt. This was great fun<br />
last year, keenly contested and provided much banter between all, really looking<br />
forward to it again this season. Go the mighty Crusaders!<br />

TRAVEL SECTION WANDERINGS<br />
Thirty-five (35) members travelled by bus to the Hurunui Race and Gala Day at<br />
Medbury Race Course on Saturday 13 February <strong>2016</strong>.<br />
This event is staged bi-annually at Medbury, about 3 kms inland from State Highway,<br />
about 2 kms before the Hurunui Hotel, and dates back to Saturday 11 April 1874. The<br />
annual gallop meetings were held annually until the Second World War (1940).<br />
The first major race meeting and gala day since 1940, was held on 7 th January 1995.<br />
The whole event and set up is a Community effort and shows what can be done by<br />
Volunteers. The Hawarden Swimming Club ran an equalisator under licence from the<br />
Brackenfield Hunt and the New Zealand Racing Board.<br />
It’s a real fun day with something of interest or to do, for everyone. We all had a very<br />
enjoyable, free day and were blessed with beautiful weather.<br />
