We are making our way through the winter months, so with the shortest day behind us it feels
like we have turned the corner. There is lots of new activity and events coming in July and
beyond to look forward to.
Whitford’s café has some winter warmers on for July, “Coffee and a Muffin $6.50 Monday to
Friday between 11am – 12 midday” and “Soup and a Toasty $10.50 Monday to Friday between
11am – 4.30pm”. These deals are great value so we hope you will enjoy them.
Wednesday’s will see the return of “Crack the Code” between 6 and 7pm. Up to $1000 to be
won if you can guess the six digit code to the safe. Thirsty Thursdays also commences in the
first week of July with drinks deals on Super Jugs and our house wine.
The “Members draws” will have a slight change in format in that the draw will take place anytime
between 6 and 6.45pm on Wednesday and Friday. Happy Hour moves to a Saturday
between 3.30 – 4.30pm.
As well as the new “Winter Menu”, July will see the restaurant opening for Sunday lunch with a
2 course deal of $25 for a roast meal and dessert. Treat yourself and the family and come down
to enjoy a hearty roast meal at Whitford’s between 12 and 2pm each Sunday.
The annual mid-winter dance is on in the Sports Hall on Saturday 9 th July. $2 on the door, doors
open from 7pm with Robbie Drew and Sharon starting from 8pm.
Look out for dinner theatre at its best with “Faulty Towers – A night of mayhem” arriving on
Saturday 27th August at 7pm. This show is an absolute hoot, so make sure you don’t miss out.
Tickets are $60 for a three course meal and show. Doors open from 6.30pm. Tickets are on sale
now at the club reception.
So no reason to be at home when there is so much on right here. Look forward to seeing you
all, around the Club.
Regards, Tim.

Garden Section
July has the coldest weather for the year with frosts striking most gardens.
The Garden Section has donated to the club a plaque and floral arrangement.
The floral arrangement was designed by Joy Stokes’ niece, Debra Kinnaird.
We had our prize giving at our AGM, Caroline Kellaway presented
the awards & prizes. We also had a beautiful meal at Whitford’s
enjoyed by all. July 20 th - guest speaker Betta Plants Nursery
Quoits Section
The Quoits season has finished for winter and we will start up again in September.
We had our AGM at the Club on 28th May, followed by prizegiving and a lovely lunch in the
Whitford’s Restaurant.
The Election of Officers resulted in the positions staying the same. We had a good turn out
for the meeting with 20 people, and we were also pleased to welcome Caroline Kellaway.
There were a lot of trophies played for this season within our section, as well as games
played against Richmond and Ashburton.
The ultimate trophies to win are the Men and Ladies Champion of Champions, these were
won by Terry Thian and
Also our regular team
that travels to Ashburton
managed to bring back
two trophies that we
haven't won for a while,
they were Terry, John,
Sharon, Tony and Liz.
It was said many times at
the meeting that we all
get along so well and
have lots of fun at games
and whenever we get
together, which is very
nice to hear.
We will give plenty of
notice for our Open Day
in September if anyone
would like to come along
and join in the fun.

Golf Section
The Woolston Golf Section had their monthly game at Avondale on Sunday
12th June. The day was very cold, in fact it felt like 5 degrees!
We had 13 players turn up to play for the Ivor Young Trophy and for a
Stapleford game. The Ivor Young is drawn 4’s. The winning team consisted of
John Parkin, Cedrick Armstrong, Craig Bain and Kevin O’Brien.
The Stapleford was taken out by Diane Ritchie with 37 points. Craig Bain
came 2nd and Mick Duggan 3rd. Our next game is on Sunday 10th July at
Kaiapoi.
Kara Campbell has been very busy seeking sponsors for the Ladies Chartered
Club Comp, which is to be held at Avondale on Labour weekend. With the
help of others it should be a very successful weekend. Prize giving will be
held at the Woolston Club. We will keep everyone informed of our progress
and of the itinerary for the weekend.
The Card Section
The season is a long one with nearly 50 of our Sundays being taken up
playing tournaments! Most of the tournaments are played in Canterbury
clubs but there are also New Zealand and South Island Championships
played throughout New Zealand.
We are half way through our Saturday Inter-Club against the Canterbury
clubs and so far we haven't lost a game. With 14 weeks left lets hope the
luck holds. We’ve also had some good luck in our Sunday tournaments,
with our players winning some and always finishing near the top.
We play Euchre on a Tuesday evening, and on the weekends we play Euchre
and Crib 500.
The Inter-Club team is made up of 26 players consisting of 8 crib and 18
Euchre so with such a large team and many players away some weekends
for various reasons we have to call on up to 40 members to fill the vacancies.
Like most games it’s very competitive but we have a lot of fun at the
same time.
Avondale Golf Course, Christchurch

Billiards & Snooker Section
Since the refurbishment the new billiards and snooker room can now hold 8
competition standard tables, which is really working well for the club. The
Canterbury Billiards and Snooker Association are now using the Woolston
Club as their home base. The only thing left to do is to look at getting the
glass doors fitted with double glazing, to try and reduce the sound from the
Kellaway Bar. We’ve also just installed a heat pump which will stop the tables
from getting damp.
So far this year we’ve had about 15 tournaments on the weekend’s and 14
weeks of Inter-Club Billiards played on Monday and Wednesday nights. Plus
we’ve had players coming in through the week to practice.
There are still about 20 weeks of weekend tournaments to go to this year,
plus 15 rounds of Inter-Club snooker to played on Wednesday nights.
The Woolston Club players have performed really well at the top of the
championships and the Inter-Club Div 1 Billiards team finished 2nd and 3rd in
the Monday competition. We look forward to what the future brings.
