Summer certainly arrived last month so I hope everyone had a chance to enjoy (or survive!) the warmer weather, a couple of the 30+ degrees had us all searching for a nice covered area with a bit of shade, and a cool refreshment. We have had a couple of key personnel changes over the last couple of months. You will be aware that Jacob has moved on to look at setting up his own business but very generously worked an extended notice period to help us get organised before his departure. He gave a couple of years of sterling service to the Club and leaves with the bar operations in a better position after his contribution. At this stage we are recruiting for his position and are on the lookout for a suitable replacement. This edition of the Club’s monthly newsletter will also be the last from the current Editor (but hopefully Bonita will be able to assist over then next month or so during transition). Bonita has been offered an opportunity in a new role in the “sports & fitness” market which offers new challenges and will extend her professionally into new areas. Bonita has been with the Club for three and a half years and has added structure and a new level of creativity to her position which has seen the standard of both internal and external marketing improve dramatically. This has also carried over into our function and catering areas with a number of new functions and repeat business secured. I personally wish them both every success and thank them for their support and the valued contribution that they have made in their respective time with the Woolston Club. We also have the pleasure of announcing the new appointment of Vicky Laird to the role of “Functions & Marketing Manager”. She will replace Bonita and has started with us this month. Vicky is across from the UK with the long term view to settling in New Zealand and comes with lots of fantastic experience that will assist her in this busy role and she should prove a real asset moving forward. It would be great if you can welcome her to the Club as she settles in. First week of the Super 18 tipping competition is under the belt. This was great fun last year, keenly contested and provided much banter between all, really looking forward to it again this season. Go the mighty Crusaders! Regards to all, Tim
TRAVEL SECTION WANDERINGS Thirty-five (35) members travelled by bus to the Hurunui Race and Gala Day at Medbury Race Course on Saturday 13 February 2016. This event is staged bi-annually at Medbury, about 3 kms inland from State Highway, about 2 kms before the Hurunui Hotel, and dates back to Saturday 11 April 1874. The annual gallop meetings were held annually until the Second World War (1940). The first major race meeting and gala day since 1940, was held on 7 th January 1995. The whole event and set up is a Community effort and shows what can be done by Volunteers. The Hawarden Swimming Club ran an equalisator under licence from the Brackenfield Hunt and the New Zealand Racing Board. It’s a real fun day with something of interest or to do, for everyone. We all had a very enjoyable, free day and were blessed with beautiful weather.
