funding upwards of 50 per cent. This increase
ensures that students who have applied and
are approved for funding from low and middleincome
households will receive a substantially
larger amount of money that doesn’t require
repayment upon the completion of their studies.
Additionally, a new UTSC-based
initiative took off this summer: the Fight the
Fees Task Force. Headed by the Scarborough
Campus Student Union (SCSU), the group’s
demands include reducing and eliminating tuition
fees, converting the provincial portion of
student loans into grants, and removing interest
from existing student loans. Students can
get involved with the Task Force by attending
meetings, which are regularly announced
on the SCSU’s social media channels and
website. Students can also reach out to the
SCSU’s Vice President External Sitharsana
Srithas for more information.
Students can also take advantage
of the bursaries, grants, scholarships and
awards programs offered by UTSC and the
SCSU. By logging in with your UTORid, students
have until the end of May to complete
and customize their Awards Profile which
will filter the awards they are eligible for. The
SCSU offers the Textbook Grant and Dollar
for Daycare Bursary, with forms available for
downloading on their website
The proposed solutions for tuition
repayment and lowered fees, now more than
ever, look promising and achievable; however,
one question still remains: what do our current
tuition fees really pay for? The Underground
breaks down how and where your tuition fees
are allocated to give you some insight.
*Please note that the breakdown listed are the
tuition costs for a non-specialized program,
full-time, full course load student.
