Letter
The two houses in this month’s issue could not look more
different. One is a maximalist extravaganza of theatrical
ideas and quirky collections – the other a pared-back,
Scandi-inspired oasis of calm and neutral colours.
But underneath their very diverse styling, they share something
fundamental: both of these dream homes were brilliantly coaxed
out of what you might politely call very ‘ordinary’ houses.
With more and more people wanting homes that reflect a
contemporary lifestyle, with kitchens and multi-use living spaces
flowing out into the garden, starting with the more spread out
plan of a 20th century house can be much easier than trying to
coax the same feeling out of an up and down Victorian terrace.
So bravo to these clever homeowners for seeing the potential.
As we find ourselves in new pencil case season, there is plenty
to inspire you to embrace autumn. In our education supplement,
we look at many different aspects pertaining to that crucial
‘which school?’ decision, from the importance of non-academic
experiences to the new options in boarding.
Our particularly fabulous fashion feature, shot in the amazing
new skate park built in the old swimming pool on Hastings sea
front, will make you feel excited about updating tailoring.
And if you feel you need help with that – look no further
than our fashion-tastic competition, with a prize worth £750,
including a personal styling session, £500 to spend in Fenwick
Tunbridge Wells and a makeover at the new Charlotte Tilbury
make-up counter there. I just wish I could enter…
