Welcome back to school. We hope that everyone had a lovely
summer holiday and that you are all refreshed - the Autumn term
is a very busy one so we trust the energy levels are running high.
For those of you who are reading our magazine for the first time,
welcome. We hope you will find Primary Times useful in helping
you to plan activities for the weekends and holidays. You will find
lots of fun things to do with your children in our WOW - What's
On and Where - section. Our regular Box Office feature lists some
great theatre productions that are ideal for primary school aged
children and our Kids' Book Reviews are particularly helpful if you
are looking for a good read for your child, the reviews are written
by children of all ages.
Also in this issue we have fantastic competitions for you to enter
- see page 14 for details. Whilst we don't really want to start
thinking about Christmas yet, we have now opened entries for
our Christmas Card creative competition. Every year we send out
thousands of Christmas cards and this year we would like your
primary school aged child to create it! One lucky entry will be
selected from across our magazines to win this competition and
details of how to enter can be found on page 14. Good luck.
Don't forget to send us your news if your child has an achievement
NEWS
Celebrating SHAKESPEARE 2016 -
The Party Goes On
Libraries across England are
celebrating Shakespeare’s 400th
anniversary year with special events
and activities over several months.
We’ve already had Shakespeare Week
in March and Shakespeare Selfie
Saturday in April. Now the party goes
on.
The national Celebrating Shakespeare
2016 campaign, run by the Society
of Chief Librarians (SCL) and its
partners, aims to introduce younger
children to Shakespeare in a fun way,
to interest teenagers in a playwright
who was edgy and daring his day, and
encourage adults to revisit his works
with a fresh eye.
Thanks to a £95,500 grant from Arts
Council England, each of the nine
English SCL regional groups has a
commissioning budget to employ
artists, writers and performers to
work on exciting, bard-related
library events over the Summer and
Autumn. A separate, national budget
has been set aside for arts-based
projects in prisons.
Bard’s Best Bits!
The libraries of the West Midlands
have commissioned acclaimed theatre
company Oddsocks to perform their
90-minute play for families – Bard’s
Best Bits… of Romeo and Juliet.
Performances will take place in
Warwickshire libraries over the October
half-term period as follows:
Mon 24 October: 10.30
The Core Theatre, Solihull
Tues 25 October: 6.00
Rugby Library & Information Centre
The West Midlands Co-ordinator, Stella
Thebridge, who is Principal Librarian:
schools and reading in Warwickshire
Libraries, said: “We are thrilled to
have secured such a high-quality
performance that will encourage
families to engage with Shakespeare
whether aged 7 or 107.”
Tracey Cox, Head of Libraries in Solihull
and current Chair of West Midlands
SCL confirmed: “This initiative has
provided free access to learning
and cultural opportunity for all our
communities across the region. It has
certainly showcased how libraries can
deliver creative and arts-based activities
that enrich people’s lives and support
them to be active citizens”.
Ayub Khan MBE, who chairs the
Celebrating Shakespeare 2016
Steering Group, said: “The ACE
funding is great news at a time when
most library budgets are under
pressure. The grant means library
services can be more ambitious and
creative in their plans to mark the 400th
anniversary of England’s most famous
writer.”
Celebrating Shakespeare 2016 has
had some notable successes so
far. Around 11,000 people joined
celebratory library events during
Shakespeare Week 2016 in March.
Selfie Saturday on April 23 asked
people to pick a Shakespeare quote,
take a selfie, and share it via social
media. The day generated more than
6,000 tweets to #shakespeare16
and has since been shortlisted in
two categories of the Public Sector
Communications Awards 2016.
a parent's guide
Tips and advice for keeping children
safe on Pokémon Go
Pokémon Go is a game where you collect and
trade cute creatures called Pokémon (Pocket
Monsters).
It's one of the first popular games to use
"augmented reality" - a kind of cross between real
life and an online world. The game makes it look
like Pokémon appear in real life places by using the
GPS and camera on your phone.
It's already become a craze in Australia and
America, and has made it's way into the news
across the world.
Here, we'll take you through what you need to
know about the game and how you can help keep
children using the app safe.
Pokémon Go explained
Pokémon
Poké Ball
Pokédex
Pokémon (Pocket Monsters)
are little creatures that can
be captured by Pokémon
Trainers using a small
spherical device called a
Poké Ball. There are different
types of Pokémon, with
different moves, abilities and
stats. The aim of the game is
to capture as many Pokémon
and to win as many 'gyms'
as you can to become the
Pokémon Master.
Pokémon Gyms
Pokémon Gyms are
buildings located throughout
the world where Pokémon
Trainers can train and
compete. Pokémon Gyms
are usually located in public
meeting spots, like parks or
churches and memorials.
This is done using a
Google-style in-game map
that shows you where the
Pokémon and locations are
in your real life location.
The Poké Ball is a spherical
device used to capture
Pokémon. The Poké Ball
is thrown at Pokémon
and when it hits them, the
Pokémon are sucked inside.
Pokédex is an electronic
device which stores the data
of Pokémon once they're
captured. The Pokémon
Trainer must attempt to fill
the Pokédex by capturing the
different types of Pokémon.
The Risks: There are loads of good things about the
game, and there’s a reason it’s become so popular. But it’s
important to learn the risks involved:
• Meeting people they don't know face-to-face
The game is designed to bring people together. Usually strangers. So you never
know who they might meet.
• There's a physical risk
It's easy to forget to look where you're going with this game, but they need to be
careful of where they end up. There are already stories of people being lured to
places that aren't safe for children.
• It can cost a lot of money
There are in-app purchases and other incentives which can cost up to £79.99
(14,500 Pokécoins). Make sure the app's set up without payment options.
• Access to personal data
Pokémon Go asks for personal information like your child's birth date and email
address, which they're asked to enter or receive through social media accounts.
Parents have the right to contact the creators to stop them from using their
personal information.
The Thing About Jellyfish, by Ali Benjamin
Published by Hodder Children’s Books. ISBN: 144492155X
Reviewed by Hannah, aged 9 from Norfolk: This is my new favourite
book, it’s the best book that I have ever read! I love
this book because it gives you fascinating facts while
telling an emotional story of a girl and her, used to be,
best friend. To help move the story along, the author
uses powerful language to have an effect on the way
you read it. My favourite character is Mrs. Turton, who
is Suzy’s science teacher, because sometimes she
can be funny but other times she can be supportive.
I recommend this book! HHHHH
The Scroll of Alexandria - A Lottie
Lipton Adventure, by Dan Metcalf
Published by A&C Black Childrens & Educational.
ISBN: Bloomsbury Publishing PLC
Reviewed by Ellen, aged 6 from North Yorkshire:
At the start, Lottie bumps in to Uncle Bert and tells
him they have another adventure to solve. Just then,
Mr Trevelyan (the museum manager) comes in and
says they are going to get rid of some of the King’s books
that he collected. Lottie, Uncle Bert and Reg say ‘no’ as they are part of an
important collection. In one of the books, they find a scroll that with a riddle
on it. They work out the riddle and an ancient door appears...
The reason I liked this story is because it has two long maths sums and I
like maths. I worked them out and the first one = 8 and the second one = 1.
The Mighty Dynamo, by Kieran Crowley
Published by Macmillan Children’s Books. ISBN: 1447299787
Reviewed by Alex, aged 8 from North Yorkshire: This book is about
a boy called Noah who is an amazing footballer. Noah (AKA The Mighty
Dynamo) really wants to play in a winning team in the tournament so that
he can be part of the World Cup. However he has been banned from his
school football team because of a fight (that he didn’t
even start), so he decides to get together a mismatch
of boys and girls for his winning football team. He is
the captain, and his team is successful - winning the
tournament, despite the cheating of his old team and
lots of hard work and team playing.
I couldn’t put it down! It was funny and the author had
an amazing style of writing. It was very easy to read. I
liked the players’ profiles and the happy ending.
My Underpants Rule By Rod Power
Published by Kids Rule Publishing Limited. ISBN: 0992953006
Reviewed by Willow, aged 7 from Cornwall:
This book teaches children that what’s under their
pants belongs only to them! The cover is brightly
coloured and eye-catching. The book came with a
bookmark. We read the book as a family and again
just me and my mummy. I think it’s a good book
to teach children that their privates are for them
only. You get asked questions to answer and what
should you do in different situations. The rule is easy to remember. I think all
children should have this book read to them as it’s important that you know
what to do if someone asks to see inside your underpants! HHHHH
Cooking with Compassion
Does your child love cooking? Why not encourage them to put their skills to good use by
entering Junior Compassionate Cook, the RSPCA Assured’s cookery video competition for 6 to
12 year olds?
It’s a really fun way for kids who love to get creative in the kitchen to make the connection
between good welfare and good food. What’s more, they’ll be in with a chance of winning
some great prizes!
To enter, simply film them preparing their favourite dish and upload the video to the RSPCA
Assured website www.rspcaassured.org.uk/junior-compassionate-cook. Videos must not be
longer than five minutes or more than 500MB.
The recipe can be for anything they like, from sausages to salmon, chicken fajitas to chocolate
brownies, but it must contain RSPCA Assured ingredients - whether it’s eggs, fish or meat.
You have until Monday 14 November to enter. Voting closes on Tuesday 13 December, so the sooner
they enter the better.
If you’re looking for recipe inspiration, check out the website where you’ll find lots of useful tips, plus the 2015 winning video entries.
Remember, they’re not looking for expert chefs or filmmakers, but lively and fun presenters demonstrating how to make simple, tasty recipes.
Winners will be announced during the second week of January 2017. So get cooking and good luck.
Eyes On the Prize
The People’s Choice and Judge’s
Choice winners will both receive
an iPad and Junior Compassionate
Cook trophy, and four runners-up
will each receive a medal.
But that’s not all! Each winner
and runner-up - as well as their
schools - will win a fun range of
children’s cookware, so they can
cook up a storm and encourage
their classmates to do the same.
Winners and runners-up will also
receive a year’s subscription to the
RSPCA’s Animal Action magazine.
This year’s celebrity judges are
Andi Peters and Liz McClarnon.
Andi told Primary Times, “I’m delighted to be judging RSPCA
Assured’s brilliant Junior Compassionate Cook competition again
this year. Getting kids cooking and having fun in the kitchen is really
important. This competition encourages them to think about where
food comes from and the welfare of farm animals.”
Liz told us, “I really enjoyed watching the kids’ videos in last year’s
competition and I can’t wait to see this year’s entries! It’s fantastic to
see kids so excited
about cooking and
that they care so much
about the welfare
of animals. It will set
them up for a lifetime
of happy cooking and
good, ethical eating.
and get cooking!”
