What does patient
safety mean to you?
NUH and Sherwood Forest
Hospitals (SFH) have launched a
new patient safety partnership as
part of their closer working.
The campaign takes on board the
views of everyone – staff, patients
and members of the public – to help
hospitals focus on what they are
doing well and where they can make
improvements.
People are invited to join the patient
safety conversation by adding
comments to a large pillar installed in
the hospital entrance.
At the launch of the campaign at
King's Mill Hospital in Mansfield,
Consultant Surgeon Nick Watson
said: “We want as many comments
as possible from patients, visitors and
staff at all levels across the whole
Trust.”
The ‘patient safety pillar’ will be used
to gain views at Mansfield Community
Hospital and Newark Hospitals before
arriving at our City Hospital and QMC
later this year.
Pre-op visiting plan
reduces stress for
vulnerable patients
Staff in Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat
Theatre Recovery have designed
and developed a pre-op visiting plan
specifically for patients who, because
of specific needs, are unable to access
dentistry in the community and instead
come to hospital to have dental work
done in theatre.
Staff visit the ward to introduce
themselves to the patient and their
carers before they go to theatre to build
a relationship and discuss any concerns
or specific needs. The same staff will
take the patient and carer to theatre
and back again after the procedure
to ensure continuity of care. Carers
will be there throughout the whole
process. They go to theatre and stay
until the patient falls asleep and will
be called back in time for when the
patient wakes up. While the patient is in
theatre, carers are encouraged to relax
or grab a drink, knowing that they will
be called back before the person they
care for wakes up.
Jeremy Walker, Theatre Recovery
Support Worker, said: “We’ve had
excellent feedback from staff and carers
about this visiting plan. Speaking to
carers I know how important this is
for them and the patient. Some carers
dedicate their life to the person they
care for and they need to know they
can be there at every step to support
the person they care for in hospital.”
New Maternity service offers
mums-to-be more choices
Our Maternity department
has launched a new service
that aims to offer a greater
range of options to women in
the final stages of pregnancy.
The Outpatient Induction of Labour
Service promotes normality and
choices for low-risk women during the
induction process.
Michelle Beazer, Induction of Labour
Lead Midwife said: “Ladies are given
the opportunity to go home overnight
following insertion of a prostaglandin
agent (Propess) if they meet specific
inclusion criteria.
“We have now had several ladies go
through the service, with very positive
feedback. They watched films at home
while they started to establish in labour
and were able to go to the park and
keep mobile. All felt it helped them
through the process.”
The new service has been launched at
QMC, and is available to all women
with uncomplicated pregnancies or
following discussion with their individual
consultant.
The service will soon be offered at City
Hospital.
