STEM and STEAM Innovation Hub
STEM
Army and Navy Academy has long prided itself on its
commitment to excellence in science. From exceptional
faculty and small class sizes, to classroom experiences
tailored to advancing scientific methodology and
curriculum, ANA has embraced educational initiatives
that focus on providing enhanced learning opportunities
in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics,
collectively known as STEM. Due to the generosity
of a senior parent, the first phase of the Academy’s STEM
Innovations Hub was funded and it will provide essential
integration of innovative technology and scientific
principles, while enabling Cadets to develop proficiencies
critical to pursuing a career in these disciplines.
The STEM Innovation Hub features equipment upgrades
that allow instructors to guide students in authentic
scientific research experiments at a progressive level in
all science classes, giving students access to modern
technology that is currently being used in universities and
research centers worldwide. Use of this technology in the
classroom, coupled with enhanced science curriculum,
ensures that Cadets have a deeper understanding of the
scientific method, and strong research and integrative
presentation skills. Advanced equipment is accompanied
by cutting-edge programming that encourages authentic
learning and supports Cadets’ original research in biology,
chemistry, and physics. Thanks to the advancements made
through the STEM Innovation Hub, seven Cadets became
published authors in the field of astronomy in 2015-2016.
reaches students beyond the science classroom by
integrating visual arts, as visual data from the HD camera
would provide the inspiration for landscape and nature
imagery in Academy art classes.
STEAM
Army and Navy Academy is revitalizing the performing
and fine arts on campus in an effort to enhance the
Cadet experience and to strengthen STEAM education
initiatives, which integrate the “A” for arts. Recognizing
that to be successful in technical fields students must
develop their creativity and critical thinking skills through
exposure to the arts, the Academy offers fine and
performing arts programs for all Cadets.
In the spring, Cadet thespians presented the Academy
and local community with their rendition of Oscar-winning
screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s legal drama, A Few Good Men.
With the support of Carlsbad’s New Village Arts
Theatre and Academy faculty, Cadets embraced the roles
popularized by Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson in the
film adaptation of Sorkin’s play. Costumes accurately
represented military branches and ranks portrayed in
the performance, and the Warrior Band provided
the soundtrack.
For three nights, Cadets took to the stage and commanded
both suspenseful silence and laughter, captivating the
audience with well-timed one-liners as well as lengthy
monologues of the courtroom scenes. Displaying the
maturity of experienced performers, they matched one
another’s intensity and as the play reached its climactic
conclusion, Davis Hall reverberated with the voices of
Cadets who had truly become a few good men.
The generous gift also made Army and Navy Academy a
WeatherBug school site, which enables middle school
students to act as local meteorologists by tracking,
analyzing, and transmitting local weather systems to news
stations nationwide. As a partner of the WeatherBug
Company, the Academy has been provided a weather
station, display screen, online weather center, HD camera
and web-based software for K-12 curriculum that has been
integrated into the middle school science classroom.
Furthermore, the WeatherBug program
