A Night to Remember at the 2016 Distinguished
Warrior Awards Dinner & Auction
Although the Army and Navy Academy has hosted an
auction for the past seven years, the event was taken to a
new level in 2016 at the inaugural Distinguished Warrior
Awards Dinner and Auction. For the first time in the
Academy’s 106-year history, the school honored an
alumnus, parent, and community supporter, with members
of all three constituent groups present to celebrate their
commitment to the Academy.
The Honorees
First, community supporter Frank Monteleone was
recognized. Mr. Monteleone first became engaged with
the Academy when his son, Michael, began attending. He
was soon elected ANAPA President, and initiated many
beloved traditions that still exist today.
MG Bartell.
Aside from his long-lasting contributions to the state of
California, including protection and enhancement of the
agriculture sector and safety in the state’s Inland Empire
region, Senator Kelley has remained engaged with the
Academy since graduating nearly seventy years ago and
currently serves on the Board of Trustees.
An Evening to Remember
The inaugural Distinguished Warrior Awards Dinner
and Auction was a resounding success, with sponsors,
underwriters, guests, and donors joining to contribute over
$172,000 to support the Academy. The Fund-A-Need
portion of the evening raised over $23,500 to benefit
beachfront renovations that will dovetail with the Rec
Hall’s remodel, as well as improvements to Davis Hall.
Carlsbad Mayor Matt Hall, and his wife Phyllis, with
MG and Mrs. Bartell.
Mr. Monteleone was also an integral player in the creation
of the Academy’s Duffield Sports Center, merging his
business savvy with his love for the Cadets to help create
the campus’ newest, most impressive structure. Today, Mr.
Monteleone continues to stay engaged with the Academy
as Treasurer of the Board of Trustees.
Next, the Academy honored Joan Élan Davis, mother of
Alex Davis ’16. Mrs. Davis is a positive force in her
community, involved with countless organizations and
families in the Incline Village, Nevada and San Francisco,
California areas. She is an internationally recognized
painter whose work has been incorporated into hundreds
of designer collections and major showrooms in the country
including McGuire, Baker Knapp & Tubbs, and Century.
The Academy looks forward to building on the
Distinguished Warrior Award Dinner and Auction’s
success in the coming years, as support from generous
supporters benefits the school’s Cadets and campus
community immeasurably.
Prem and Bhuvana Kittusamy (Raj '17) and Steve and
Candace Garvey (Sean '17) enjoy the silent auction.
Mrs. Davis supports the Academy throughout the year, but
one of her greatest annual contributions is the donation of
an original painting for the auction.
Lastly, the Academy recognized Senator David Kelley ’47.
Senator Kelley served in the California State Assembly and
California State Senate for almost thirty years, and is
known for his ethical approach to decision-making as well
as his ability to work effectively with politicians on both
sides of the aisle.
