5 Teeny Tiny Changes
To Lose Weight Faster
Easy ways to boost
weight loss
If your goal is to lose
weight and exercise more,
forget the deprivation diet
and marathon workouts.
Research shows that
taking baby steps—not
giant leaps—is the best
way to get lasting results.
(Lose up to 25 pounds in
2 months—and look more
radiant than ever—with
Prevention's new Younger
In 8 Weeks plan!)
A study published in
the Annals of Behavioral
Medicine found that participants
who made one
small, potentially permanent
change in their food
choices and/or physical
activity each week (such
as drinking one fewer can
of soda or walking 5 more
minutes each day) lost
more than twice as much
belly fat, 2½ more inches
off their waistlines, and
about 4 times more weight
during a 4-month program,
compared with those who
followed traditional calorie-restriction
and physical-activity
guidelines.
"When you focus
on just a couple of small
changes at a time, you
begin to ingrain some
healthy habits that last
for a lifetime, rather than
trying an all-or-nothing
approach that more often
than not fails because it's
too hard to follow," says
Lesley Lutes, PhD, an assistant
professor in the
department of psychology
at East Carolina University.
We've uncovered 15
simple steps (with proven
results) to help you move
more, eat less, and look
and feel better than ever.
Add just one or two a
week to your regular
routine and you can lose
nearly 3 inches off your
waistline and be about 10
pounds lighter in a few
months.
Even better: Once
these healthy habits
become second nature,
they'll benefit you for a
lifetime.
1. Pick up a pen
Mindlessly munching
on a bag of chips could
result in easily polishing
off the whole thing; write
down how much you've
eaten and you're more
likely to practice portion
control and lose weight
fast. Keeping a food log
helps control extra calories
in two ways: the combination
of plain old reality
check (I just ate 30 minutes
ago!) and awareness
that what you're putting
in your mouth will soon
be recorded for posterity.
In a recent study, people
who kept a food journal
lost twice as much weight
as those who didn't. When
they combined it with a
moderate diet and exercise
plan, they lost an
average of 13 pounds in 6
months. Journaling also
gives you insight on your
eating habits, says Dr.
Lutes. Do you skip meals?
Eat the same during the
week as on the weekend?
Binge when you're feeling
stressed? "Knowing your
routine helps you figure
out what changes are right
for you," she adds.
2. Skip through
commercials
Get moving during
your favorite TV
shows. Skip, dance,
go up and down
some stairs, run in
place—anything
that gets your heart
rate up so you feel
somewhat breathless,
says Geralyn
Coopersmith, senior
national manager at
Equinox Fitness. Do
it for each 2-minute
break (forget the
TiVo) during a typical
2-hour TV night and
you'll burn an extra
270 calories a day—
which can translate
to a 28-pound
weight loss in a year.
(Try this total-body
toning routine you
can do while watching
TV.)
3. Limit high-fat foods
Tag the high-fat/highcalorie
foods that are
typically your favorites (our
top five: cookies, candy, ice
cream, potato chips, and
fries) and gradually downshift.
"If you're eating six
of these foods a week, try
4. Sign up for
e-newsletters
One study
from Kaiser Permanente
found
that people who
received weekly
e-mails about
diet and fitness
for 16 weeks
substantially
increased their
levels of physical
activity and
intake of healthy
foods like fruits
and vegetables
while cutting
back on trans
and saturated
fats. Sign up
for Prevention's
FREE weekly
weight loss
newsletters.
to go down to five," says
Dr. Lutes. Each week, drop
another until you're at no
more than one or two; at
the same time, add in a
good-for-you choices like
baby carrots, sautéed broccoli,
oranges, and other
fresh fruits and veggies.
5. Walk 5 minutes
more
In Dr.
Lutes’s pilot
study, increasing
daily activity
levels by just a
few minutes at
a time helped
participants lose
weight faster.
Eventually, your
goal should be
to do at least
30 minutes of
physical activity
a day (burning off
about 120 extra
calories daily,
or 12½ pounds
a year), but it
doesn’t have to
be all at once.
(Check out these
25 easy ways to
squeeze in 10
minutes of exercise.)

again dons
the Caveman’s
skins and steps
onto stage to add to his
record breaking slew of
sold out performances of
the longest-running and
most successful solo
comedy in South African
theatre history. The
Broadway production
still holds the record of
the longest running nonmusical
solo comedy of
all time.
What more can be said
about this wonderful
show that so humorously
exposes the hunter and
gatherer in us all and has
played to over a million
people?Penned by Rob
Becker, Plewman adapted
the script for Southern
Africa and went on to
win the Vita Award for
Best Actor in a Comedy.
Updated, upgraded and totally
uploadable to today’s
world of tweets, selfies
and six million Facebook
friends, this production is
still a hilarious, affectionate
and insightful comedy
that explains why men and
women see the world so
differently, and will have
you looking at your partner
with new eyes. After years
of hearing that all men are
assholes, the Caveman
once again stands up to be
counted. And being a troglodyte,
standing upright is
not an easy thing to do.
The Kamberg
Classic has
earned a
reputation
as one of the
best races on the calendar.
It is a 65km mix of
jeep track, farm roads,
forest trail and about
20km of sublime single
track. But what makes
this ride really special is
that it brings the mountains
back into mountain
biking. From the top of
the Kamberg the views
over the Drakensberg
and the descents are
spectacular. Country
Life found the Kamberg
to be one of SA’s top 10
mountain biking destinations
and races like
joBerg2C have put this
valley on MTB map. 2015
race winner, Andrew Hill
said that “this track rivalled
many that he has
done before for flow and
enjoyment”. You seriously
have to explore
this valley!

Raw Cup
Trail Run
Mandela Day
Trail Run
The reintroduction of
the Raw Cup in 2008 has
led to the annual match
between DHS and College
becoming one of the
most anticipated in the
soccer calendar. The Cup
was first played for in 1889
when College beat DHS
in the inaugural match
but the Cup seemingly
fell into obscurity in 1951
until it reappeared after 54
The match started
at a frenetic
pace with endto-end
play. An
early chance
for College's M Hlongwa
was aimed just wide of
the post. The next two
real chances fell to College
with two free kicks
being awarded within
range of the DHS goal although
both were wasted
efforts. In the 18th minute,
a DHS cross found
the outstretched hand
of College midfielder, S
Zondi, and a penalty was
years in 2005 when it was
discovered at a flea market
and the new owner, Robert
Buck, was persuaded by
the DHS archivist, JJ Oddy,
to donate it to DHS. College
won the first edition
in 2008 and to date, the
spoils have been shared, 4
wins each. College are the
2015 reigning champions,
winning 2-1.
awarded. DHS captain
Riyadh Rajah stepped
and and coolly slotted
the ball past Yandisa Hadebe
at full stretch. DHS
weathered an onslaught
of College attack up till
the half time whistle. 1-0
to DHS at the break.
As time ticked away
in the second half, some
College I'll-discipline led to
DHS being awarded many
free kicks, although none
were within true shooting
range. 10 minutes into the
half, a loose ball fell to College's
S Vezasie, who was
waiting outside the box. He
rifled off a powerful shot
which looked destined for
the top corner before being
miraculously tipped onto
the crossbar by the DHS
keeper. DHS turned to a
defensive strategy, piling
men back to hold their
lead. In the 25th minute of
the second half, College's
L Phipps saw a header
sail just over the crossbar.
With 10 minutes remaining,
K Mudali cut his way
into the DHS box only to
be scythed down by two
DHS defenders, College's
technical area erupted but
to no avail as the referee
deemed the challenge
fair. The remainder of the
game saw DHS maintain
a level-headed hold over
the game. The final whistle
blew and the capacity
home stand erupted and
burst onto the field. DHS
coming out deserved 1-0
winners. They also take
a 5 to 4 lead over College
in the number of trophies
won since the cup was
reinstated in 2008.
It’s not surprising
that the Mandela
Day Trail Run is the
fastest growing trail
run in KZN, it’s right
on point when it comes
to the atmosphere, the
route, the people and
the venue. Set in the
hills of the beautiful KZN
midlands on the last
weekend of August, the
weather can be slightly
unpredictable and the
third running of this
element of the 5th Mandela
Day Marathon event,
was by far the warmest,
despite a stiff morning
breeze. Being the first
event of the weekend,
the trail run sets a festive
and relaxed tone for
weekend.
Trail runners smile, talk to
one another and in general
have a lot of fun when
on the trail. An album of
images captured by Julian
Schroeder and posted on
the KZN Trail Running
Facebook page capture
the essence of trail running
and the atmosphere at the
event, displaying just how
much fun a morning on the
trails can be. To gather and
run in the hills to celebrate
the life of Nelson Mandela,
our founding leader, cannot
be described, it must be
experienced. Well done to
all those who came together
to share this experience
in 2016, from 6 year olds
Sizwe Mvelase and Jamie
Daniels to 76 year old Brian
Jarmey-Swan who all completed
the 4km.
The race also boasts
impressive prize money,
drawing a very competitive
field over the 15km, 8km
and 4km courses. Runners
are made to work hard on
some challenging climbs
and it was Givemore Mudzinganyama
who scored a
hat-trick, having won the
race in 2014 and 2015, on
the longer Championship
Cradock – A
Victoria
Lake Canoe
Club couples
quintet
is excitedly readying
themselves – many for
the first – for this year’s
Hansa Fish River Canoe
Marathon which takes
place in Cradock on 7
and 8 October.
Wayne and Karen
Saunders, Michael and
Christina Sears, Danny
Stevens and Berdine Nel,
Richard and Linda Carter
as well as Anthony and
Theresa Welsh are looking
forward to making the
journey down from Gauteng
to the Eastern Cape
for the 35th edition of the
event in a few weeks’ time.
Teaming up with their
respective husband or
partner, Karen, Christina,
Berdine and Linda will all
make their Hansa Fish
debut in a few weeks’ time
while Theresa looks to
add a second finish to her
name having completed
her maiden effort in 2015.
“The five of us ladies
have all come through
the Victoria Lake Canoe
Club novice programme,
which was started last
year and aims to bring
new faces into the sport of
canoeing, explains Karen
Saunders.
“The programme
gets underway at the start
of the paddling season
and culminates in taking
on the Fish (River Canoe
Marathon), which 14 people
– including Theresa
– managed to do successfully
last year.
“After taking Theresa
down the Fish River for her
first one last year, Wayne
decided he wanted to paddle
his tenth Fish with me.
“I resisted the idea
for as long as I could but
eventually I gave up and
joined the VLC novice
programme.
“Like all the other ladies,
I’ve now one through
all the proficiency tests,
desperately done all the
Fish qualifying races and
am now just trying to get
as much experience on a
river as possible.”
While simply finishing
the Fish would be an
achievement for the five
mixed doubles, an internal
rivalry and personal pride
see each of the couples
secretly aiming to outshine
the other four as well.
“Wayne and I are in
our fifties while Michael
and Christina are in their
twenties, but there’s no
ways I’m letting those
youngsters beat us!”
laughs Karen.
“We haven’t spoken
about it yet, but I definitely
think we’re going to have
to come up with some kind
of reward for the K2 that
finishes first or punishment
for the pair that finish
last!”
Embracing the Hansa
Fish atmosphere remains
key for the Gauteng group
who are looking forward to
enjoying the trip with both
friends and family alike.
“We didn’t really
know the other couples
before paddling but VLC
is such a tightly knit group
that we’ve all become very
close since we started
canoeing.
“We’re staying together
in Cradock and it
should be a great few days
for us all.
“Our eldest daughter
will be seconding Wayne
and I, Danny’s two sons
will also be paddling and
the Carters’ daughter is
coming with too, so it will
be a great family trip for
many of us as well.”
With just six weeks to
go to the race, Karen can’t
quite contain her excitement
ahead of her maiden
appearance as a Hansa
Fish participant.
“Wayne and I love
going down to Cradock
for the race each year –
the people are always so
friendly and the organisers
do such a fantastic job!
“The Fish is Wayne’s
favourite race on the calendar
and now, for the first
time, I finally get be part
of it all properly and I can’t
wait!”
The 2016 Hansa Fish
River Canoe Marathon
takes place from Grassridge
Dam to Cradock
Sports Complex on Friday
7 and Saturday 8 October.
KZN runners come endangered
Rhino & Bearded Vultures’ aid
Himeville – A
group of
KwaZulu-
Natal’s top
trail running
talent have bandied together
ahead of the 2016
Rhino Peak Challenge on
Thursday 22 September
to raise much needed
funds for and awareness
of the plight of two highly
endangered wildlife species.
As both the Rhino
and the Bearded Vulture
– an inhabitant of Rhino
Peak itself – face grave
times, Su and Iain Don-
Wauchope, Tracy Zunckle
and Steven Erasmus hope
their participation in this
unique conservationdriven
trail run can make a
much needed difference.
“Conservation is
something that is very
close to my heart and
being part of this whole
experience is all about the
animals, not us as individuals
or runners,” explains
Bergville mom of three,
Tracy Zunckle.
“People often become
desensitized to ‘another
environmental crisis’,”
adds Winterton’s Su Don-
Wauchope. “The Rhino
Peak Challenge though is
such a fun way of tackling
what is a very serious
problem, so it’s great to
be part of this very unique
event!”
“I studied Environmental
Management
and consider myself an
environmentalist,” says
Don-Wauchope’s husband,
Iain. “Any time we’re able
to support a good cause –
especially when its something
that is so close to
home like the Rhino and
Bearded Vulture – Su and
I are in.”
With the added motivation
of the animals relying
on runners’ pledgers’
financial support, the contingent
of local athletes
are eager to put their best
foot forward come this
year’s challenge despite
the short, sharp course.
“The Rhino Peak
Challenge is quite a short
run that’s not too technical,
so its pretty much a
sprint to the top and back
down again,” says Racefood’s
Zunckle.
“Its very steep though
– some parts just too
steep to even run.
“I’m the gran of the
group, but hopefully I can
get to the top as quickly as
I can.
“If it was up to me, I’d
then tuck into a cold beer
and take in the incredible
view from up there but the
animals and my pledgers
will be driving me to keep
pushing all the way back
down again.”
Despite their running
prowess, the event
may well take on a slightly
more scenic perspective
for the North Face/Mountain
Splendour Don-Wauchope
couple as injury and
illness threaten to limit
their efforts.
“I’m coming back
from an ankle injury,”
explains Su. “I am running
well again on the flats, but
am still battling a bit in the
mountains so I think the
real ‘race’ will be between
Landie (Greyling), Tracy
The North Face/Mountain
Splendour's Su Don-Wauchope
(left) and Racefood's Tracy
Zunckle, together with a group
of KZN's top trail runners and
influential people, hope raise
awareness of and funds for the
plight of the Rhino and Bearded
Vulture through their participation
in the 2016 Rhino Peak
Challenge on World Rhino Day
on 22 September Huck Orban/
Gameplan Media
(Zunckle) and Megs (Mac-
Kenzie).”
“I was meant to run
this year but I’ve been
struggling with burnout
and haven’t run since
June,” adds Iain.
“Having grown up in
the Central Drakensberg,
the Berg is a special place
for me and the event supports
such a great cause,
so I wanted to still be
involved.
“I’ll now be joining the
‘influential people’ towards
the back.
“It should be lovely at
the top of the Peak at this
time of the year with clear
skies and hopefully not
too much wind so I’m sure
we’ll all have a great time
while contributing as best
we can too.”
The 2016 Rhino Peak
Challenge takes place on
World Rhino Day on Thursday
22 September. Participation
is by invitation
only however pledges can
be submitted and more
Rice brothers
lining
up Breede
assault
Robertson
– As some
of South Africa’s
premier
paddling
duos descend on Robertson
for the 2016 Breede
River Canoe Marathon
from 3 to 4 September,
the Rice brothers, Sean
and Kenny, will ditch
their much-loved surfskis
for a double kayak
before casting their eyes
forward to a busy end
of year schedule on the
ocean.
Both known for their
prowess on the seas, the
elder brother, Sean, has
been racing hard for a
number of months with an
eye on the World Surfski
Series title and will arrive
back in South Africa in the
knick of time as the brothers
line up their first river
race together in a number
of years.
“Sean is currently in
Croatia enjoying the sun
whilst we’re stuck in wet,
cold Cape Town!” younger
brother Kenny mentioned
light-heartedly. “He’s
going to be back on the
Friday before Breede so
we won’t be in a boat together
before the start but
I am looking forward to a
good two days of racing
with him.”
“It’s going to be the
start of a big training block
for us ahead of such a
busy schedule going into
next year, but Sean hasn’t
been on a river in ages so
we will just see how we
go.”
Paddling in a K2
together is a fairly foreign
concept for the brothers
as they weigh up the best
possible set up in the boat.
Kenny’s recent salvos
in varying river craft may
well give him the fast track
to driving the boat, however
he is not taking on
the mantle too freely.
“We still deciding
who is going to drive the
boat but I think Sean will,”
Kenny countered.
“He knows what it’s
like to race up front with
the big guys so I think his
racing brain will be better
leading the boat and I’ll
give the power from the
back,” he chuckled.
“I am really enjoying
my river racing and
did both the Drak Challenge
and the Dusi earlier
this year – even getting
through the Drak in one
piece in a K1!
“I’ve been paddling a
bit with Stu MacLaren as
well as with Mark Keeling,
so I have been doing quite
a bit in the K2.
“Hopefully we can
mix it up with the big
guys,” the Varsity College/
Euro Steel star added.
The Breede doubles
as the 2016 South African
K3 River Marathon Championships
but despite
being made an offer to
contest for a national
Despite completing many double surfski races together, the Rice brothers,
Sean (front) and Kenny (back), will jump in a K2 and tackle the 2016 Breede
River Canoe Marathon together on 3 and 4 September. John Ivins/
Gameplan Media
championship, Rice opted
to give it a miss after one
forgetful experience in a
K3 previously.
“Oom Giel (Van
Deventer) has been asking
me if I want to jump
into the K3 with him but I
paddled in a K3 on the St
Francis lagoon once and
I can safely say that I will
not be getting into another
one anytime soon!”
With a jam-packed
final quarter of 2016 on the
cards for the Rice brothers,
the Breede has offered
them an opportunity to
test their river skills as well
as put in a good, competitive
block of training as
their eyes glance towards
a whirlwind, worldwide finish
to the year.
The pair start their
final quarter assault on the
World Surfski Series with
the Pete Marlin Surfski
Race – the 2016 SA Surfski
Championships – in
East London, then jet off to
Hong Kong for the Dragon
Run, stop off for two races
in Perth, another in New
Zealand and then back
home for the Cape Point
Challenge in December.
“We don’t race without
the intention of winning,
so we are going to be
racing as hard as we can.
“I can’t guarantee
that we will be up there
with the top guys though
because it is a really
strong field this year and
the Breede is a tough race.
“Although it is quite
different to paddling on
the sea, rivers teach you
about different water
channels and they vary
in depth so it’s a good
strength exercise.
“It tests you mentally
as well because if you fall
off the back of a bunch,
it tests your endurance
and your determination to
get back on to the bunch,
which is a great challenge,”
Rice explained.
The 2016 Breede River
Canoe Marathon, which
doubles as the 2016 South
African K3 Marathon
Championships, takes
place from Robertson to
Swellendam on 3 and 4
September. More information
