President’s Note
Bew White, GW president & c.e.o.
Garden Party! There’s nothing like it ... anywhere. And I’m not sure there ever will be. But this
year’s Garden Party was unlike any other. Perhaps it’s because we surveyed our client base and
asked what they liked about Garden Party and what they didn’t like, and we tried to make
garden party as perfect for the client as possible.
So we mixed in entertainment with a magician. We had activities such as golf, on-message
speakers, a heritage background about the history of Summer Classics and roundtables about
how to grow your business. We also hosted a formal dinner at the Mountain Brook Club,
which everyone said they wanted to do again.
We did it all in the setting of the Summer Classics large distribution center and showrooms so
that people could see who we are, what we’re about, how we operate and what specifically we
could do to help them increase their business. Not just with us. To top this off, the introduction
of over 170 new products made this year’s garden party one-of-a-kind. That combined with a
new special events room in the outlet for dinners made the Summer Classics Garden Party ...
well, just very special.
Thank you to everyone who made Garden Party a huge success. A warm thanks to Roy Dollar,
Jamie Monroe, Connie Kasper Dale Boehm, David House, Norma Purnell, Mark Rodell, Beau
Taylor and Zach Pratt for helping pull this off. In particular, the Garden Party transportaion
has never run as smoothly as it did this year despite the degree of difficutly with the distances
from Ross Bridge to Barber’s.
July was another great month for us! Sales for the month were up: Wholesale 22%, Gabby 33%,
SC Home Retail 19% and Contract 32%. We look forward to finishing the year very strong!
Asia Summit
William White, c.m.o., Wright Currie, product development
& sourcing director and Mr. Pam Chung, vp Asia operations
In late July we held our annual all-day Asia Summit with Asia team in Ho Chi Minh, a cultural and
commerce center of Vietnam and the home base for many of our Gabby products. We met together
with our Asia team to review challenges, goals and recognize individuals for their outstanding work.
Being with the group in Asia was an incredibly rewarding experience—we have such great respect for
them. They protect our interests in the factory and work toward our goal of 100% on-time, quality and
completion. Thanks to their efforts, we’ve been able to successfully increase
efficiencies and reduce return rates across both lines.
Our colleagues in Asia don’t get the chance to meet together like we do
every day in our Pelham offices so it was a unique opportunity for all of
us. During the summit the team worked in both large and small working
sessions, discussing ways to improve quality, safety and communication.
The team came up with great ideas and new methods that can improve our
processes across the board.
It was also our privilege to recognize two distinguished employees: Buddy
Wang and Tricia Tao. Buddy has worked extensively on the Summer Classics
line and has been one of our most dependable employees for eight
years. He oversees the quality for six factories and has helped establish
new ones as well. Tricia joined the team just about a year ago and her
positive, hard working spirit is admirable. She’s has taken on a lot of
responsibility quickly, including training two of our newest employees,
Tommy Li (now stationed in Summer Classics cast factory), and Jackie
Chen who is currently reporting directly to Tricia stationed in South
China. Tricia is now overseeing the quality and communication for six
Gabby factories.
We are proud of the Asia team and are excited about the new
and innovative ideas that we’ll be able to implement over the next year
as a result of the summit.
More Asia News
We are monitoring the collapse of Hanjin, a streamship line
that moves containers of freight into the US, and its impact
on our business. Our freight forwarding partner used
Hanjin for part of their capacity. Between Summer Classics
and Gabby, we have 16 containers currently in transit with
Hanjin. It’s a small portion of our shipments, and we are
watching the impact it will have on the industry.
From CNBC.com . . . .
Hanjin Shipping vessels have been seized at Chinese ports
in the wake of the South Korean firm’s collapse, further
roiling the industry as freight rates jump and manufacturers
scramble for alternatives.
Seeking to contain the fallout, a South Korean court said
it would soon begin proceedings to rehabilitate the carrier
- which would allow Hanjin to take legal action in other
countries to keep its ships and other assets from being seized.
Rival Hyundai Merchant Marine will also deploy at least
13 of its ships to two routes exclusively serviced by Hanjin,
while the South Korean government also plans to reach out
to overseas carriers for help.
The court’s move to rehabilitate the world’s seventh-largest
container shipper is seen as mainly procedural, and an eventual
liquidation of assets is likely, analysts and industry officials said.
“Unlike dry cargo, liner shipping is all about marketing
and service reliability — we haven’t seen any large carriers
come back from collapse,” said Rahul Kapoor, a director at
maritime consultancy Drewry Financial Research Services.
“There is a loss of faith among customers. It’s very unlikely
Hanjin can come back from the ashes.”
Hanjin’s banks decided to end financial support for the
shipper this week and since then, many of its vessels have
either been denied entry to ports or unable to dock as
container lashing providers fret that they will not be paid.
This includes the port of Busan, South Korea’s largest.
The Korea International Trade Association said on
Thursday that about 10 Hanjin vessels in China have been
either seized or were expected to seized by charterers, port
authorities or other parties. That adds to one other ship
seized in Singapore by a creditor earlier this week.
The collapse comes at a time of high seasonal demand for
the shipping industry ahead of the year-end holidays.
Freight rates on some routes where Hanjin operates many
ships have surged. The cost of shipping a 40-foot container
on the Busan-Los Angeles route has jumped about 55
percent, from $1,100 to around $1,700, according to South
Korea-based freight forwarder Pantos Logistics. Rates
between South Korea and the U.S. east coast via Panama
have risen about 50 percent to $2,400, it added.
Stranded televisions
LG Electronics, the world’s No.2 maker of TVs, told
Reuters it was canceling orders with Hanjin and was seeking
alternatives to ship its freight. It is also making contingency
plans for cargo already on board Hanjin ships in the event
the vessels are seized.
The Korea International Freight Forwarders Association
said it has been inundated with calls from cargo owners
worried about the fate of their shipments in transit to the
United States and Europe.
While mobile phones and semiconductors are carried by
air, other electronics like home appliances are shipped by
sea.
“This will have an impact on the entire industry,” said Cho
Kyung-kyu, a director at the association.
South Korea’s maritime ministry said on Wednesday that
Hanjin’s woes would affect cargo exports for two or three
months, with about 540,000 TEU of cargo already loaded
on Hanjin vessels and facing delays.
A Hanjin bankruptcy would be the industry’s largest ever
in terms of capacity, according to consultancy Alphaliner,
exceeding the 1986 collapse of United States Lines. The
shipper accounts for 7 percent of Far East-North America
container trade.
State-run think tank Korea Maritime Institute estimated
that shipping rates on Busan to U.S. routes would rise 27
percent and Busan to Europe routes would rise 47 percent
in the near term, causing Korean exporters additional
shipping costs of about 440.7 billion won per year.
Marketing News Mark Griggs, v.p. marketing
Garden Party
August was a whirlwind, due in large part to Garden
Party 2016! We prepared, entertained and communicated
with our customers for a fantastic week. The information
we shared and gained was phenomenal! Every detail
from the gifts adorned with our logo, to the activities
and entertainment, right down to the catalogs and a
multitude of collateral was produced by the Marketing
staff. Special thanks to Marisa, Renee, Jamie and Willie
for all their hard work. Linda and Jessica were non-stop
on social media. LeeAlice’s catalog was tremendous hit
again this year. Gwen and Doriesa have been hard at
work delivering the initial materials for the sales staff
and John got quite the introduction with his continuous
video services during the big event.
Print Shop
We added our new Print Shop here at headquarters.
We were printing and training all month to position
ourselves to take over much of the printed materials we
produce. We are printing price lists and small catalogs for
sales distribution, business cards, banners, wall graphics
and outdoor graphics for our partners and company
needs. We’ll soon be announcing the new custom catalog
program for 2017 and providing reps with a menu of
items available to customers.
New Members
We welcomed John Rockett, Susan Ray and Jessica
Miller to the staff. John will serve as our full time inhouse
videographer. Susan is the new manager of public
relations and content creation. Jessica is a graphic
designer who will work with retail, digital and the print
shop. All three have made an immediate positive impact
on the department!
Branch Conversion Complete
Excellent firms don’t believe in excellence — only in constant improvement and constant change.
— Tom Peters
The Syspro branch conversion was completed the last weekend in July. It was a project 18 months in the making and
required a tremendous effort by many people. I want to extend a great big “THANK YOU!!” and “GREAT JOB!!” to
the IT and Accounting teams for all of the long hours they worked before, during and after the conversion. And while
things were not perfect, they went extremely well considering everything involved in a project this size.
All areas of the Company were impacted by the change. It’s a big adjustment and there’s always a learning curve. I want
to thank each of you for your patience and perseverance during these times of constant change. I’m confident within
the next 60 to 90 days we will start to see efficiencies throughout the business as a result of branches.
Gabby Update
Beth Sherer, e.v.p.
This is a big day for me as I write my first official monthly update for Gabby! I’m
thrilled to be part of such an amazing organization and a sincere thank you to
those who have helped me with the transition. Everyone I have come in contact
with has been a wealth of information and I am learning a ton each day.
As usual, we have a lot going on as we wind down from Las Vegas Market and Garden Party and
begin preparations for High Point. Garden Party was a big success and our customers were in awe
of their experience in Birmingham. We received a lot feedback in the Round Tables that they loved
hearing about the heritage of the company. The new product introductions from Atlanta market
have been shot and will be announced within the next week. Our Chapter 12 Catalog has been beautifully executed
by the Marketing and Design Team. We cannot wait until it reaches our customers by the beginning of October! Our
annual Customer Survey will be going out at the end of August, and we hope to receive some great feedback regarding
our products and service. Next month marks the launch of our StyleMakers program. We have targeted specific markets
where we want to grow the Gabby Brand. We have chosen Designers in Texas, Utah and California who will become
Brand Ambassadors and give us additional exposure across social media and marketing platforms. This is yet another
step in moving Gabby closer to becoming a National Brand. With significant growth comes change. In order to create
more synergy, the entire Customer Service Team will merge in to one team beginning next week. This will only enhance
the amazing experience our customers already receive. A special shout out to these folks for coming along for the ride
and remaining as hard working and professional as they have always been.
The Gabby and Summer Classics teams want to take this opportunity to send our thoughts and prayers to the victims
of the recent flooding in Louisiana. We have customers who have damaged homes and warehouses. Please join us in
helping to support the victims by dropping off any of the following items at Gabby Customer Service. We will have
boxes in our lobby: Soap • Shampoo • Toothpaste • Toothbrushes • Deodorant • Wipes (no water, showers/baths in
areas)• Diapers
Wishing everyone a Happy and healthy Labor Day!
Sales Update Schon Duke, v.p. sales
Garden Party was a huge success!
Summer Classics had its 15th annual
Garden Party this year in our new
Corporate headquarters. We had the
largest dealer turn out in attendance
ever. Many were visiting us for the very
first time. We had new and existing
key dealers from all over the country in
“round table” discussions where they
got to share best practices. We had our
showroom set up with all of the 2017
collections displayed beautifully. The
dealers in attendance responded with
orders and incredible interest.
Many dealers are just now stepping
into the outdoor category and seeing
the SC products on display got their
wheels turning. Summer Classics,
being a one stop shop for the category,
makes us the perfect go-to leader in
the industry. I have received numerous
compliments on our company, people
and products from these new dealers
in attendance. It is apparent we have
made and influenced some of the best
retailers in America!
Garden Party is just one way we are
able to set ourselves apart from the
competition. We could not have
gotten that separation without all of
our amazing help behind the scenes.
From our display team, logistic team
and countless other Summer Classics
employees this Garden Party could
not have been as successful as it was.
Thank you to everyone who made this
Garden Party an amazing success.
The sales team is building off of this
successful Garden Party and booking
Early Buy orders as you read this article.
We have many dealers to work with
and are looking forward to another
successful Early Buy season. The
products are amazing. The discount
programs are set and Summer Classics
is poised to grow again this year!
SC Private Label
Harold Hudson, president
Summer Classics Private just finished another successful Garden Party. We showed our entire line in the Museum area of the
building and customers were receptive to our new offerings.
We have added several past Summer Classics products to our 2017 line and they were on display during the Garden Party. The
new offerings are Palm, Milano, Ocean Grand Teak, Aire, Aqua, Dolphin, Kipling, Detron, Equestrian, St Croix and Tetra.
Customers now have the ability to change the resin colors and finishes since these items are now in the Private Label offerings.
We will be showing these collections at the September Casual Show and adding them to our catalogue.
We had several new customers of Private Label commit to containers during the Garden Party. Two of these customers will be
using their own logo branding plates on the furniture making the product their own product.
If you have questions or would like additional information on how to make your own Private Label product contact Harold
Contract Update
Welcome to the second half of the year from all of us in
commercial sales! Our August has been filled with fantastic
opportunities and events, we kicked off the month by
welcoming our newest team member Mark Rodell to our
corner of SC31, Mark comes to us with a vast knowledge and
understanding of business development in the healthcare,
multifamily and government business sector and has jumped
right in to assist quite literally anywhere and everywhere
including Garden Party and installations. Speaking of
installations, kudos to Meg, Deana, Alissa, Mark, Blake,
Rob, the crew from New Latitudes and a couple of guys from
Micah’s team, we completed what would have been a multiday
installation in less than twelve hours at Ross Bridge
insuring that our guests were able to experience the best that
SC has to offer.
Along with what is always the highlight of the summer,
Garden Party our team was in attendance at an NEWH
event in Orlando with Angela making the rounds with
multiple design firms in attendance, a regional multifamily
event in Texas where Sara could barely keep up with all of
the companies stopping in for information and several online
presentations related to multifamily that we are excited to
share in the coming months. Suffice it to say we are definitely
looking to manage each and every one of our niche markets
Please help me welcome the following employees to our family!
MONTHLY UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 2016
Our family meeting is now set for Friday, September 30th and will be held off-site at the YMCA’s
Camp Hargis. We will be integrating this with a team-building and company picnic event that
we hope will help bring us all closer together and underscore our value of “Family.” The format of
the meeting has changed to emphasize the purpose of these meetings which is to improve Company-wide
communication as well as facilitate understanding amongst the various teams and units.
We will be setting up the Question Box in the weeks to come in various departments and will be
addressing overall strategic-based questions at the Famiy meeting. Your individual department heads
will be holding meetings a week prior to this gathering to address questions of more functional or
individual nature. More details will be forthcoming as we draw closer but we will be providing food,
games and other “goodies.”
HALLOWEEN PARTY & CONTEST
Get started on thinking about your department themes, decorations and costumes as we will be
having another Halloween Contest and Trick-R-Treat. All Corporate departments will decorate and
dress up and our operations employees will enjoy the chance to trick-r-treat throughout the building
as well as judge the winning department. Last year’s contest showed some outstanding creativity and
horrific humor so we are looking forward to seeing what people can do this year. We will be announcing
the actual day of this Halloween celebration so keep checking for updates.
What I fear most:
Failure. It’s legit; I was talking to my
Favorite Memory:
Going to France... a month was not
