It was 3am April 25th 1915 as our boats
were heading towards the Gallipoli
peninsula. I was only 15, I’d lied about
my age because I thought it would be an
adventure, I’d be a hero.
We were convinced that we would take
the Turks by surprise and that we would
return victorious. But the second my
boat touched the shore, I could already
see the faint shadow of the Turks’ huge
guns and their soldiers in trenches.
Then, the funnel of one of our steam
boats lit up and gave away the surprise
attack. We were sitting ducks. I knew it.
As we piled onto the shore, the enemy
guns were blasting away at us as we
trudged up the hill. But our rifles only
seemed like water pistols. They had
a clear shot on us from the dunes.
Suddenly I felt a massive shudder
as a bullet ripped through my right
shoulder and out the other side. I
tumbled down to the bottom of the hill
as I heard voices through my head. This
was war!
