I
ran into an old friend in downtown Sheldon
yesterday. “Did you get to the fair
yet,” I asked, knowing we have often run
into her and her husband while we toured
the Clay County Fair
commercial buildings
in previous years.
“Oh yes, on opening
day,” she said. “But we
need to go back.”
Turns out it was a
larger family outing
for the first trip to the
fair, and with that
many people to keep
content, she hadn’t
gotten to see and do
all the things that are

on her personal list of favorites. I had that
experience once when we met up with
members of my extended family.
But I loved her solution — go twice!
We don’t have that many weekend days
free this year, so we will only get their one
time, and right now it looks like that will
be the final day. It’s a gamble going on the
last day as they may not be good stuff left to
buy. I always find new, interesting, helpful
or tasty products we must have.
I start the day with a large, nearly empty
shoulder bag. By the time we leave it is
loaded with treasures. A few times the
purchases haven’t fit — the year I bought
a steam mop, for example, or the year my
husband convinced me to buy the Vita-Mix
(best blender E V E R) — so we’ve had to
double back for them before returning to
our parked car. Personalized Christmas ornaments,
nail polish detail pens, soup and
dip mixes and a sham-wow were easy to fit
in my tote.

Popcorn:
Solsma’s Ruby Red Popcorn is
a smaller kernel popcorn that
pops bright white with small
red hull speckles. It has a rich
nutty flavor. Raised with love on
the Solsma’s very own farm in
northwest Iowa. Shipping available

They have also added Mardi
Gras Popcorn. It is a dark blue
kernel popcorn with higher expanding,
tender flakes. It is the
perfect compliment to their Ruby
Red Popcorn.

my! Solsma’s Punkin Patch in
Sanborn is celebrating 17 years
of helping people usher in the autumn
season with their selection of
pumpkins, gourds, corn and so much
more.
The idea behind Solsma’s Punkin
Patch came from a time when Amy
Solsma was very young.
“I grew up on a farm by Newkirk
and we had a little garden that we
would plant some pumpkins in and
we would set them out by the road
and the neighbors would stop and
pay a dime or a nickel,” Amy said.
“One year, the Orange City paper put
my sister and I with our pumpkins
in the paper and we made $24. We
thought that was pretty big stuff.”
Fast forward to 1999. Amy got married
and moved to Sanborn with her
husband and they had a family. One
year, when they were planting corn
they forgot to go back and plant one
area of skip rows. They filled in by
planting Indian Corn and pumpkins,
whose vines would wind their way
between the rows..
“We got a golf cart trailer load that
we sold and that was our first load,”
Amy said.
They’ve been doing it ever since.
Now they are up to five acres of
pumpkins, but they also grow gourds
and Ruby Red popcorn, and they have
a corn maze and a country store.
The country store sells the Solsma’s
own home raised, drug free Hereford
beef, as well as their Ruby Red and
Mardi Gras popcorn, crafts, fall decor
pieces and wine from Country Barn
Winery. In fact, they’ll be having a
wine tasting at the Punkin Patch on
Sunday, Sept. 25 from 1-5 p.m.
The corn maze is in a different
shape every year so it’s something that
people can keep returning to year after
year to have a new, fun and different
experience. The cost is $5 per person.
The pumpkins have had a good
year, and Amy can’t wait to share
some of her favorites with the people
who come by and stop in at Solsma’s
Punkin Patch.
“We have 70 varieties this year and
some cool new ones. I planted seven
kinds of white ones and I like six of
the seven,” Amy said. “We also have
some interesting squash varieties
that I wouldn’t eat but that look very
cool.”
In addition to picking out the perfect
pumpkin, whether that be for
eating or for carving, the Solsma’s
have a wide variety of pumpkins in all
shapes, sizes and colors this year.
They also have some entertaining
things for the kids. There is a bouncy
house outdoors and a corn playpen
inside for the kids to enjoy.
The Solsmas officially opened the
Punkin Patch on Labor Day this year
and they can’t wait to share all their
hard work with the people who stop
in.
“I’m really excited because I have a
really neat crop and really interesting
new things. It’s so fun to see your hard
work come to fruition,” Amy said.
“We didn’t have hail or anthing so
everything looks really nice and it’s
been fun educating people on all the
different kinds of pumpkins, gourds
and squash.” F

Brewery and tap room hosts WestOberfest
The beer and the atmosphere.
That’s what it’s all about, according
to West O Beer owner
Matt Matthiesen. The brewery will be
hosting its own version of Octoberfest
celebrations with WestOberfest on
Saturday, Sept. 24.
“It started out as something real
simple and each year we’ve put a little
more into it,” Matthiesen said.
The tap room opens at noon and
50 commemorative beer steins will be
available for $5 and can be filled for
just $3 throughout the day.
There will be brewery tours at 2
p.m. and 4 p.m. as well as games like
hammerschlagen, bags and a keg toss
from 2-4 p.m. outside near the beer
garden.
As to why the brewery began hosting
its own version of Octoberfest in
the first place, it’s really quite simple.
“It’s a combination of a couple
things. We’re really proud of our
WestOfest beer and my wife and I
both have German heritage so we
thought it’d be a good match,” Matthiesen
said.
The WestOfest is a Marzen-style
lager that is described on the West
O website as “Copper color, creamy
white head, and biscuit aromas from
kilned malts and a hint of caramel.
Slight hop aroma from a late kettle
addition of Mt. Hood hops.”
In addition to the WestOFest, there
will be several other beers on tap as
well as Sutliff hard cider and 1919
Root Beer. The Iowa Wild Hogs BBQ
food truck will be on hand to feed any
hungry visitors to the brewery.
In the evening things kick up a
notch with live music from King of
the Tramps from 7-10 p.m. inside the
tap room.
“We’ve had them several times before
and they do a really good job,”
Matthiesen said. “You can tell they
have fun performing and they put on
a great show.”
Good music, good food and good
beer. What better way could there be
to celebrate Oktoberfest in Okoboji?
Really in the end it all boils down to
two things for Matthiesen.
“The top two things for us are the
beer and the atmosphere,” Matthiesen
said. “We focus on creating quality
beer and having an atmosphere where
people are able to enjoy it.”
Get there early, grab a stein while
you can, and ring in WestOberfest
with the folks that know beer best. F

GLOW
The organizers of Alton’s 4th annual Glow
Run are inviting one and all to get their
glow on.
At this unique, after dark 5K Fun Run or
1-mile walk, participants are encouraged to wear
things that glow in the dark.
The annual Glow Run and Street Dance is
scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 24. The fun gets
started as the sun begins to set. Beginning at 6
p.m., there will be a bouncy house, face painting,
crazy hair painting, temporary tattoos and
other fun activities for kids. There will also be
more “glowing” merchandise available at the
Glow Tent, which will be set up in front of 10th
Street Pub.
All of these activities will take place until
around 7:30 p.m.
Then it’s time to race.
The 5K or 1-mile Run and Walk gets started
at 8 p.m., and the race is not timed. Both of the
routes take participants through the streets of
Alton.
“There will be glow paint that we will paint
on the street to mark the route,” said TIffany Leibold,
one of the event’s organizers, in the past.
“We will also be using water bottles with glow
sticks in them. Anyone in Alton who lives on the
path has been asked to light up their yard.”
It’s certainly a fun sight to see all of the people
“glowed” up and this year they are asking people
to dress up according to their “Glow Like a Super
Hero” theme. So be a radioactive Spiderman or a
glow-in-the-dark Cat Woman. There are endless
opportunities to glow like a super hero.

“Anything from shoelaces to headbands or
even wearing glow sticks. People can dress themselves
in anything that glows in the dark,” said
Leibold in the past. “People can get as crazy as
they want. It’s all about having fun.”
The event is geared toward raising funds for
AIM, which has donated part of its proceeds to
the Alton East Side Park Renovations.
After everyone crosses the finish line then it’s
time for the dancing to start.
The street dance kicks off at 8 p.m., as well,
with band Wicked Fun.

The cost to register is $30 and kids ages 15
and under receive a discount. The registration
fee covers entrance for both the Glow Run and
the Street Dance. Registrants will receive a packet

U of O wraps up 2016 schedule with Oktoberfest Bike Ride
This 27-mile ride has a 22-mile
option and is entering its 25th
year. The University of Okoboji
Oktoberfest Bike Ride celebrates a
quarter century of rides around West
Lake Okoboji.
Beginning at Arrowwood Resort
and Conference Center in Okoboji,
riders will make a counterclockwise
loop around West Lake Okoboji with
various stops along the way.
“This is the 25th year and a big
change is opening things up more
to non-riders and spreading things
throughout the community,” ride director
Ken Hanson said.
Restaurants and bars such as Minerva’s,
The Ritz, Okoboji Store, Barefoot
Bar, The Gardens, and Pub 19
will have various food and beverage
specials going on throughout the day
for everyone.
There also will be a West O Beer
rendezvous along the route. Participants
wearing their ride shirts will be
able to take advantage of even more
specials.
“It’s Oktoberfest, which is all about
getting together, good eats and drinks
and having a good time,” Hanson
said. “We’ve concentrated most of the
stops towards the end of the ride to
ensure a safer ride for everyone.”
To take advantage of the specials
riders should wear the official longsleeve
ride T-shirt, which comes with
the registration fee of $30 if signed
up before Sept. 19. The price for the
ride increaseS to $35 up through the
morning of the event.
Hanson said about 500 riders
signed up last year and he’s expecting
as many, if not more, this year.
He’s also encouraging participants
to follow the race on Twitter for trail
detours, weather updates and other
event communication.
Many of the riders, both local and
out-of-state, have been coming back
to the Iowa Great Lakes area for this
fall ride almost every year.
“We just had people from Joplin,
MO, sign up and I’ve seen a name
from California on the list already,”
Hanson said. “It’s pretty fun to see
what a great core of people we have
that return every year, including some
that have been here 10-20 years in a
row.”
Hanson chalks up the longstanding
tradition of the ride to a couple
things; the University of Okoboji and
the trails system.
“We’re so blessed to have the trails
we do and they certainly get used a
lot. And obviously whenever you say
University of Okoboji before something
it has a certain cachet to it,”
Hanson said. “It’s a tradition deeply
rooted in the resort community and
all the visitors love to participate.”
Riders of all ages can enjoy the
event. Hanson said he’s seen someone
sign up with their ten-year-old, as well
as local groups that always bring their
kids and riders all the way past 70
years of age.
Whatever age the rider and however
many stops they make along the way,
there is a shortcut available once they
make it past the Trestle Bridge into
Okoboji.
Instead of making their way along
scenic Lakeshore Drive they can follow
the highway back to Arrowwood
cutting off about five miles of the
total.
Take the shortcut or ride the whole
route. Either way there will be plenty
for everyone to enjoy during the 25th

A band of brass
Seraph Brass opens Sheldon music series
Seraph Brass will open the Sheldon
Civic Music Association
2016-17 season on Wednesday,
Sept. 21. All concerts will be held at
the Sheldon High School Auditorium.
What is unique about the five Seraphs
— a term for heavenly or celestial
beings — is that they are women,
said trumpet player Mary Bowden, a
co-leader of the group.
“We decided to form a group, we’re
all strong players,” Bowden said. “We
found that to be really important,
to showcase strong female brass performers
on stage together. We thought
that would be very inspiring for future
musicians, to show we can do this.”

You might not think that German
food, beer and games go
hand in hand with palm trees
and a tiki bar, but that simply means
you haven’t attended Oct-Tiki-fest at
the Barefoot Bar in Okoboji.
This is the second year that the Barefoot
Bar will be hosting this new fall
tradition. This year’s event will take
place on Saturday, Sept. 24, and it is
set to start at 4 p.m.
Last year the event was held in
conjunction with the last Full Moon
Party of the season, but this year they
decided to make Oct-Tiki-Fest its very
own event.
“We will have a beer garden with

local beer and Oktoberfest beers. We
have German inspired food, like pretzels,
brats, kraut and German potato
salad,” said Debbie Parks, the marketing
director for Parks Marina. “We
have hammerschlagen, and polka
music. Events start at 4 p.m. with the
Polka Police, followed by the Mighty
Nish Band at 6 p.m.”
The Oktoberfest style beer is coming
from two different sources, according
to Parks. West O Beer is making an
Oktoberfest Beer and Summit Brewing
will also be supplying the other
Oktoberfest style brew.
In addition to some yummy German-style
beer and food, there will
also be German games to try your
hand at.
“Hammerschlagen is a German
game reportedly dating from 1940,
in which several contestants try to
hammer a nail into a stump,” said
Parks.
Hammerschlagen
(‘Hammer-Striking’) is a variation of
Nailspielen (‘Nail Game” or “Playing
With Nails’). Both versions are
essentially the same, Nailspielen is
played with an axe, Hammerschlagen
is played with a hammer. Nailspielen
made its way to the United States in
the mid-twentieth century. A commercial
version was established and
named ‘Hammerschlagen.’”

Parks can’t wait to have one more fun
event before closing for the season.
“We would extend the season as
long as we can, but inevitably mother
nature usually overrules us. We are
just hoping for great weather so we
have one more excuse to hang out at
the Tiki Bar,” Parks said. F

Artist Kimble Bromley presents The Moby Dick Series
Kimble Bromley has a unique
approach to his art; hypnosis. A
professor of painting and drawing
at North Dakota State University
in Fargo, Bromley has long studied
the relationship between hypnosis
and creativity. And that creativity is
on display starting this month at the
Pearson Lakes Art Center in Okoboji.
The Moby Dick Series: Works by
Kimble Bromley is up from Sept.
1-Nov. 12 in the Monte Pearson Gallery.
“Bromley is an internationally acclaimed
hypnotist as well as an artist
and talks about the ability of hypnotism
to induce a creative state
and paint more freely,” said Britney
Hansen, visual arts director at the
Pearson Lakes Art Center. “His work
is abstract and large scale with broad
movements, color and a sense of playfulness.
He also captures movement
very well.”
This current series is based on the
1851 Herman Melville novel “Moby-
Dick; or, The Whale” and includes oil
on canvas paintings completed from
2009-2016.
“He’s still building on the series,
which is abstract but has recognizable
elements throughout that people will
know,” Hansen said.
Maybe it’s harpoons in one painting,
or a set of ships on another. Most
obvious is probably the white whale
skeleton set against a red background
in the largest painting of the series.
That particular piece is made of
three separate panels and measures
approximately six feet by twelve feet.
“Scale makes a difference and
Bromley talked about how it allows
the opportunity to explore things differently,”
Hansen said.
Hansen was able to explore things
as well in setting up the exhibit as
Bromley simpley dropped of the work
and told her to “go to town” while
hanging them up.
“It was certainly fun to do. We created
the panels with colors to have
an ocean-like feel and it’s something
where the artist gets to see their work
from a different perspective in a gallery
space they might not have seen
otherwise.”
Anyone interested in adding a piece
to their art collection simply needs to
inquire for a price list as all the pieces,
from large to largest, are for sale.
Bromley also will be holding a
workshop at the art center at a date
to be determined that will delve into
the subject of hypnosis and includes
guided drawing sessions.
Dive into the Melville-inspired
series by Kimble Bromley from now
through Nov. 12 at the Pearson Lakes
Art Center. Altogether they tell a
whale of a tale. F
