Dear Members,
It has been some time since I last updated all of you from the Golf
Course Superintendent position. This season is not unlike the others, as it has
presented more than a few challenges. Our water quality remains low which in
turn dictates what we can and cannot do with mowing heights and speed. In
general, we have had a great growing season and the maintenance team has
battled these challenges head on. I am proud of those guys for putting in the
required effort on a daily basis.
We recently completed a grueling three week process in which all
three nines were completely aerified and thatched. It is tiresome work from
sun up to sun down. Turf recovery is complete and we are in good position for
the coming winter months. About the time you get this newsletter, we will be
performing the last greens aerification of the season. Small 3/8” holes followed
by sanding will be starting on September 6 th with completion on the 8 th . I look for a very quick turnaround
due to warm temperatures and quality performance by our team.
Towards the end of October, we will overseed the same areas that we seeded last season. That list
includes the driving range tee, three par tees, certain tees in which irons are used more frequently, and
those areas that assist in keeping balls from rolling into canyons or bunkers. We feel that the selected areas
make a huge impact in your enjoyment of Bella Collina.
As the night time temperatures begin to drop, you will see a reduction of growth throughout the golf
course. Once this happens, mowing frequency is reduced and project work takes its place. We will be
correcting the bunkers on 6 Muirfield and 9 Carnoustie this fall. More mulch will be applied to thinning areas
and brush removal is always on the list.
I look for a relatively smooth ending to the summer season and many good months of quality golf
conditions are in our forecast. Come on out and enjoy what Bella Collina has to offer.
Jay Pesicka
General Manager
Sincerely,
Jay Pesicka
As some of you may remember, back in May, we partnered with Addington Cotillion for a children’s
dinging tutorial. The kids looked great and had fun (yes, fun!) learning about everything from how to
give a proper handshake to which fork to use. Since then, I have received many inquiries from members
asking if we plan to do it again. I am happy to tell you that Addington Cotillion is returning to Bella
Collina for a full season of cotillion classes for second through fourth graders! If you have not yet received
your invitation, please visit Addington Cotillion’s website: http://www.addingtoncotillion.com
The History of The Ryder Cup
THE GRANDEST EVENT IN THE
GAME BY ELISA VICTA
The Ryder Cup has become
one of the world’s greatest sporting
contests as every two years, 24 of
the best players from Europe and
the United States go head-to-head
in match play competition. Drama,
tension, incredible golf, camaraderie,
and sportsmanship are served
in equal measure, captivating an
audience of millions around the
world. It is an event that transcends
sports, yet remains true to the spirit
of its foundation on prestige rather
than prize money.
With debate over the years
about who “officially” brought the
idea to life, the Ryder Cup was
officially born in 1927, although
informal competitions between
teams of Americans and British
(Great Britain & Ireland) had already
taken place years prior. With the
hopes of encouraging international
understanding and hopes of
increasing the number of American
professionals competing in the
British Open, and in return, the
number of British professionals
competing in the U.S. Open, two
unofficial matches between
professionals from Great Britain and
the United States took place at
nearby courses prior to qualifiers for
the British Open. The first match
took place in 1921 at Gleneagles,
Scotland, and in 1926 the second
match took place at Wentworth,
England, with Great Britain winning
both matches.
Some sources say that the
match in 1926 was the fuel to the
“official” start of The Ryder Cup,
with its name simply originating from
the donor of the trophy, Samuel
Ryder. Ryder was an English
businessman from St. Albans, a city
outside of London, who made his
fortune selling and shipping small
packets of herbs and seeds out of
his home. In 1908, at the age of 50,
he had taken up golf to improve his
health and employed Abe Mitchell,
one of the golfing greats of his era,
as his personal tutor. A year later he
joined the Verulam Golf Club in St.
Alban’s and two years later, he was
appointed club captain and his love
for the game only grew from there.
Stories are told that Ryder
was enthralled by the match that
took place at Wentworth in 1926,
and particularly delighted to see
Mitchell team up with George
Duncan to defeat the defending
Open Champion, Jim Barnes and
the great Walter Hagen. “We must
do this again,” said Ryder at a bar
afterwards and The Ryder Cup was
born. Other sources say this
conversation took place prior to the
1926 match and the first official
Ryder Cup was originally supposed
Samuel Ryder

to take place in 1926. Either way, U.S., with each side winning on their several teams, playing numerous
down most travel into Britain, the
American team consisted of
transplanted players born outside of
the United States; two Scots, two
Englishmen, and one Australian and
the match was ruled “unofficial.”
Following that match, discussions
were made that moving forward,
each team was to consist of only
native-born players on each side.
The following year
in 1927, the first “official”
match took place at
Worcester Country Club in
Worcester, Massachusetts
with the Americans
winning decisively, 9 ½ - 2
½. They were the first to
raise The Ryder Cup in
victory. The cup was a
native soil; Great Britain won at
Moortown in 1929, The U.S. won at
Scioto in 1931, the U.K. winning at
Southport in 1933, and the U.S.
winning at Ridgewood in 1935. The
match of 1937 was played again at
Southport and it was there, the
cycle of the home team winning was
terminated and the Americans
prevailed on British soil.
exhibition matches against
challenge teams in order to raise
money for the American Red Cross,
various service organizations, and
other war related efforts. The Ryder
Cup resumed play for its seventh
match in 1947 at Portland Golf Club
in Portland, Oregon, with the
Americans winning the match. The
next 15 of 17 matches through 1977
were won by the Americans, with
the exception of the
match in 1957 and the
first ever tie in 1969.
With the
Americans dominating
The Ryder Cup, the
PGA of Great Britain
altered its selection
procedure and
expanded their player
small but striking gold cup
that, today, epitomizes all
that is good in sporting competition.
It cost Ryder £250 (approximately
$330.00) and made its first appearance
at the send-off when the British
team set sail across sea for the
first match. Designed by Mappin &
Webb Company, the trophy was
19 inches high and made from solid
gold. Its hallmark read “1927,” and
on the very top stood a tiny likeness
of Ryder’s mentor, Abe Mitchell.
The next four Ryder cups
alternated between the U.K. and the
In 1939 the Ryder Cup was much greater pool of talent. The first
in 1985. They followed by
winning the next Ryder Cup in
1987 on American soil, the first
time for the Europeans in Ryder
Cup history.
Then
years of U.S. domination, the tide
started to turn. The U.S. won in
1979 and the next two matches
following through 1983 and then in
1985, Europe broke their 28 year
losing streak by winning that year
and the next 10 of 15 Ryder Cups.
The next Ryder Cup is
scheduled this fall at Hazeltine
National Golf Club in Chaska,
Minnesota. With teams to be set
mid September, the rivalry and the
tradition of the Ryder Cup will continue
to live on. Playing for pride and
country, The Ryder Cup will kick off
September 30 th and continue
through October 2 nd . The weekend
will bring out raw emotions, passion
and most importantly, the love of the
game in its truest form. Quite simply,
what Sam Ryder began in 1926 has
grown to become the grandest event
in the game.
Now
How it Works
The Ryder Cup is played in even numbered years between 12-member teams from the
United States and Europe. It consists of five match-play sessions played over three days.
Team Selection
The United States will have eight
players determined by points, while
the European Team will have nine
– the first four coming from the
European Points List and the next
five from the World Points List.
Europe has three Captain’s Picks,
while the USA has four.
Ryder Cup Format
Each of the first two days includes
one four-ball session and one foursomes
session.The final day is
reserved for 12 singles matches.
Ryder Cup Scoring
Each match is worth one point,
with matches ending in a draw
worth ½ point to each side. The
first team to reach 14 ½ points
wins the Ryder Cup. If the matches
end in a 14-14 draw, the team
holding the Ryder Cup retains it.
Southern California Evans Scholarship Alumni Association Annual Golf Fundraiser
with Ralph Butz & Tom Fitzgerald, Representatives
Who/What does this Golf Fundraiser
benefit? The Evans Scholarship
Foundation awards full tuition
and housing scholarships to deserving
caddies across the country to
four-year colleges. The Evans
Scholars Foundation is known as
"golf's favorite charity" as it grants
approximately 250 college scholarships
to both, male and female,
caddies. The college scholarship
program is almost 90 years old and
is proud of its 10,000+ college
graduates! We call it the American
Dream.
When was this first established?
The Evans Scholars Foundation
was established in 1930 by famed
amateur golfer, Charles “Chick” Evans
Jr. as he partnered with the
Western Golf Association, however
our local Southern California Annual
Golf Fundraisers commenced in
2002.
What success have you had
since launching this event? We
have raised nearly $146,000.00 for
caddy scholarships since starting
the Southern California Evans
Scholar Alumni Association. The
last two years at Bella Collina, we
produced RECORD proceeds of
$40,000.000 contributing to the
number of participants swelling in
size. Our membership in the Southern
California basin is approximately
300 Evans Scholar alumni,
of which the tournament field of
golfers is approximately 90-100
alums + guests.
How did the 2016 Golf Fundraiser
go? Bella Collina has been a WON-
DERFUL host to our events since
partnering. We get great service, a
great layout, with wonderful hospitality
services, and at an attractive
price that keeps us coming back
year, after year, after year, after
year! Our highest net proceeds was
recorded at the 2016 event, in particular,
was $22,000. We would
LOVE to have some Bella Collina
members play in our future events,
STANCE—San Clemente, CA
Located in San Clemente,
Stance has become “THE” brand of
socks. Giving life to something that
had consistently been overlooked by
many brands and majority of the
fashion industry, a new sense of
style and fashion was born. With its
headquarters located down the
street from Bella Collina San
Clemente, Stance has made their
mark around the world and are not
slowing down any time soon.
Jeff Kearl, Chairman and
CEO of Stance, mentioned in an
interview with The Los Angeles
Times in 2015 that he remembers
walking the aisles of Target in San
Clemente and when he arrived in
the sock aisle he noticed it was
“literally black, white, gray and
brown” and saw the potential this
under-valued category had. Over
the next few months, Kearl
researched everything there was to
know about socks and with John
Wilson, Stance’s President, Aaron
Hennings, Chief Creative Officer,
Ryan Kingman, Chief Marketing
Officer, and Taylor Shupe, Chief
Product Officer, Stance was officially
founded by the end of 2009.
The first pairs of socks hit
retail in late 2010 with its first three
accounts at specialty surf shops in
Southern California: Surfside Sports
in Costa Mesa/Newport Beach,
Jack’s Surfboards and Huntington
Surf and Sport in Huntington Beach.
Stance socks are now sold in more
than 40 countries and at major
retailers including Nordstrom,
Bloomingdale’s, and Macy’s,
estimating close to 30 million socks
sold since 2010.
Caleb Lin, Vice President
and Buying Director at L.A.-based
American Rag said “The appeal is
the quality. The weave is tighter, it
feels more comfortable around your
foot, the fabric doesn’t wear through
as quickly, and the fabric doesn’t get
all fuzzy after you wash them a
couple times.” That same appeal
landed Stance the opportunity to be
named the official sock of the NBA
and the NBA’s new on-court sock,
which was worn by every player in
every game for the entirety of the
2015-2016 season. This also
marked the first time a company has
been allowed to put its own logo on
a game worn sock. In May of 2016,
Stance was named the official sock
of the MLB.
Stance continues to grow
their brand and with the help of their
brand ambassadors, “Punks and
Poets,” which include musicians,
athletes, designers, artists, stylists,
writers and photographers, their
popularity will continue to spread
around the world. They have
continued to grow their line as they
launched their new product of men’s
underwear in November of 2015
and the ever changing sock designs
will keep consumers wanting more.
Stance’s philosophy of expression
and function is woven into their
products and alongside their design
and creativity, they are assured to
be at the top of the fashion industry
for a very long time.
Pretty cool, huh? Well, guess who
else sells these socks?! Your Pro
Shop at Bella Collina! Come grab
yourself an awesome new pair of
socks by our neighbors, Stance.
Brian’s Golf Tips
How to Fix Your Slice!
A very common problem we see with golfers is their tendency to slice the ball. This
means for a right-handed player, the ball curves severely from left to right. The player loses distance and their
ability to hit fairways and greens. Slicing is not fun! Players slice because the club face is open relative to their
club path or swing direction. If you want to quickly reverse this pattern and start hitting powerful draws, try
strengthening your grip and getting the club shaft to shallow, or flatten in transition.
Step 1: Stronger Grip – turn your left hand clockwise so that your left thumb is on the right side of the grip and so
you can see at least 2 knuckles on your left hand. The ‘V’ created between your thumb and index finger should
point towards your right armpit. When you place your right hand on, make sure the ‘V’ points in the same direction
as the left hand. At this point the club face should feel closed or shut in your hands.
Step 2: Shallowing the club shaft in transition – slicers tend to start down with the club shaft too vertical or steep.
Try to feel like the club head drops behind you and the shaft flattens when you start your downswing. This will
help you shallow the club EARLY in your downswing, allowing your body to rotate naturally into impact. By
strengthening your grip and shallowing your club in transition, you will change the relationship between your club
face angle and your swing path. The result: a beautiful draw!
Home of the Marine Corps Academy Mess Night
Tradition: An inherited, established, or customary pattern of
thought, action, or behavior. By Elisa Victa
When The United States
Marine Corps was founded on
November 10, 1775, the traditions
and customs of esprit de corps
would begin and would lead to one
of America’s most honored brotherhoods.
Gallantry and comradery in
arms enabled the Marine Corps to
build a name for itself throughout the
years that is now known throughout
the world and respected by every
military service in existence. This
name was hard earned and the
maintenance of traditional discipline,
gallantry, and love of the Corps was
and is the duty of every Marine to
uphold. Not only must the high standard
of respect and prestige be
maintained, but it must also always
be strengthened. It must be passed
on to future Marines who will take
their place among the ranks of the
Corps and look back with pride on
what has been accomplished. The
United States Marine Corps Mess
Night is an element in fostering such
standards.
The United States Marine
Corps Mess Night is a formal event
involving drinks, dinner and various
events designed to further promote
the esprit de corps of the brotherhood
of
Marines. In
addition, to
recognize
and pay
homage to
the Marines
who came
before
them. Each
division of
the Marine
Corps carries out this tradition to
show respect to the occasion,
whether it is to celebrate the birthday
of the Corps, to commemorate
the loss of their fallen comrades, to
say farewell to a member of their
ranks, or to pay honor to a distinguished
visitor.
Mess Nights can be traced
back as far as the days of the Roman
Legions and the Vikings, when
victory celebrations were held after
battles, however, the traditions of
the United States Marine Corps
Mess Night originated in the 1920’s.
While the United States Marines
were in Shanghai, China protecting
American interests, two members of
the Fourth Marine Regiment, Captain
Lemuel Shepherd and his Commanding
Officer, Colonel Davis
(later commandants of the Marine
Corps), were invited to attend the
Mess Night of the Scotts Guards,
Second Battalion, British Army. They
were so impressed with the British
Ceremony they saw that they soon
instituted their own Mess Night. The
first USMC Mess Night was held in
1928 and the tradition was quickly
embraced by the rest of the Corps.
Today, these traditions have
continued to be carried out and upheld
by various divisions of the

Fall 2016
Page 21
United States Marine Corps. Typically,
a Mess Night follows a specific
set of etiquette and customs that
start with a 30 to 45 minute cocktail
hour followed by a meal that opens
with several toasts and very strict
codes of conduct. Any member of
the unit that breaks the strict decorum
of the night is ordered to pay a
fine, with some members going out
of their way to break the rules to add
to the fun. Only Marines are permitted
to attend Mess Night. The only
exception to this is the Guest of
Honor who can be a civilian, and on
occasion, a ‘Dining Out’ will take
place which follows related etiquette
to the Mess Night, but can include
spouses as well.
A President and Vice President
of the Mess are designated to
oversee the planning and execution
of these events and maintain the
customs that were made before
them. These Marines then appoint a
Mess Committee from the other Marines
in attendance to individually
and collectively complete tasks to
make sure the evening is a success.
At Bella Collina, we are honored
to be a part of this long standing
American tradition and selected
as the venue to these Mess Nights
for many of the Academy Courses
from our neighbors at Camp Pendleton.
These courses are intended to
give Marines the knowledge and
skills necessary to assume leadership
roles of greater responsibility in
order to grow individually and within
the Marine Corps. With all the hard
work our Marines put in to these
courses, an evening out with those
they stand next to day in and day
out continues to build America’s
brotherhood. With every Mess Night
that takes place, comradery
strengthens, pride and the love of
the corps grows, and this honored
tradition of those before them continue
live on and be passed on to
the next generation to those who
serve our country with the United
States Marine Corps.
“Except for the annual
celebration of the Marine
Corps Birthday, no social
function associated with
the smaller of America’s
military services is more
enjoyed, admired and
imitated than the mess
night” - Lt. Col Merril Bartlet USMC (retired)
Happy Birthday to the United States Marine Corps!
Born November 10, 1775
Did You Know?
The Marine Corps Emblem consists of an eagle clenching the Marine Corps motto in its beak, the globe
(Western Hemisphere), and the anchor. The emblem was adopted by Brigadier Jacob Zeilin in 1868 to
depict the Marines as both American and maritime.

“Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they’ve made a difference in the world.
Marines don’t have that problem.” - President Ronald Reagan, President of the United States; 1985
The globe and anchor signify the worldwide service and sea traditions.
The spread eagle represents the nation itself.
The motto, “Semper Fidelis” is Latin for “Always Faithful”
BELLA COLLINA SAN CLEMENTE
Finding that perfect romance
between Cigar and Spirit!
BY TRAVIS JONES
The cigar culture is alive
and thriving here at Bella Collina.
Some would say no activity pairs
better with a good smoke than a day
out on the links. But when it comes
to pairing your favorite cigar with
a Wine, Beer or Spirit, some don’t
know where to begin.
I like to tell people who are
pairing drinks with cigars to simply
match the body of the beverage to
the body of the cigar. For example,
a light-bodied cigar will go well with
some white wines, young reds like
Pinot Noir or blended scotches. Medium-bodied
smokes are great with
Craft Beers like IPAs and Stouts, or
Irish Whiskeys, Scotch, spiced
Rums, American bourbons, Cognac
and Ports. Full-bodied smokes are a
perfect match with Peaty Islay and
heavier Highland Single Malts, or a
dense Bordeaux Blend.
Pairing cigars with wines
and spirits is just one part of the
equation. Cocktails can make for
great pairings, too. Try a Mojito or
Moscow Mule with a light cigar and
see where it takes you. A Tequila
Sunrise with a nice oaky Anejo Tequila
might really surprise your taste
buds when paired with a sweet
wrapper like a Maduro.
In the end, your taste is the final
judge as to what works. If the two
complement each other and nothing
is over-powered you have yourself a
match! Have fun testing out different
smoke and drink combinations and
develop your own perfect pairings.
Share your knowledge and perfect pairings with the members of Bella
“Fore! The Love Of The Game”
By Finkstrom Cartoons
FINKSTROM loves the game of GOLF! Whether you're a casual fan of the game, or a diehard
golf fanatic, you're going to love his collection of classic golf cartoons! After many years of teeto-green
research, too many bad swings to count, and what felt like an eternity in a sand trap,
we created one of our most popular cartoon collections called "FORE! The Love Of The Game".
