AMESBURY – During
the last 10 years, 42 missing
children have been located
and returned to their rightful
parent, thanks to a bunch of
crazy, obsessed car enthusiasts
who created a televised 2,000-
mile road race and trivia game,
called Fireball Run.
On Saturday, Oct. 1,
Fireball Run’s 40, two-person
teams plus sponsors and
two production teams will
descend on this quaint former
mill town that once was the
heart of the carriage and
automobile industry.
Amesbury Chamber
Director Cassandra Gove
expects 10,000 fans and
participants to make their way
to downtown to be part of
the destination celebration of
this race that starts eight days
before in western New York.
All hotel rooms in the area,
including the new Hampton
Inn, are booked. Parking
downtown will be scarce.
“It is going to be a big day
for Amesbury,” Gove said.
The event in Amesbury will focus worldwide attention on finding missing children,
including 26-year-old Jesus De La Cruz, who was born in Lynn and was last seen this
month 20 years ago. Any information about his whereabouts will be forwarded to the
National Missing Child Center.
The latest missing child, showcased by Fireball Run, was found in North Carolina
last month and returned to the mother.
Fireball Run came to Amesbury four years ago when the race stopped here for
lunch.
“We blew it out of the water,” Gove said. The town brought to downtown thousands
of children and adults who created an exciting atmosphere for the television audience
watching the race.
This year will be much bigger because Amesbury will be the end of the race.
According to Gove, this year’s event will be a once in a lifetime opportunity. “Fireball
Run will not be back again,” she said.
There will be a parade, events for children and adults and an antique car show that
ON THE ROAD TO PLUM ISLAND – The Pink House on the Plum Island
Turnpike has been given a stay of execution.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which owns the iconic house, has delayed its
demolition for a year. To its growing number of fans, that may feel like a stay of
execution because so many photographers, painters and casual viewers have come to
view the vacant house as a friend.
The year’s delay, approved by Bill Peterson, who heads the Parker River Wildlife
Refuge, will give its supporters time to work out a permanent solution that allows
the house to stay in place on the marsh or on another site.
“There is so much good feeling about the house in the community,” said Rochelle
Joseph, an Amesbury writer and member of the Save the Pink House leadership.
“No one wants to be the bad guy.”
The three-bedroom home with more than 2,000 square feet of space was built in
1925. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Parker River National Wildlife Refuge
bought the house in 2011 for $375,000 from a family that had lived in it for
decades.
The agency, whose mission is to encourage and preserve wildlife, does not see a use
for it. Sandwiched between the marsh and the turnpike makes the dry land more
valuable to the federal government than the house itself.
The wildlife refuge would prefer to use the 9 acres the house sits on for a viewing
platform. Buses and cars that bring school children or tourists could park there and
use the proposed platform to study the marsh and its wildlife up close.
The Save the Pink House group has scheduled a briefing on the house’s status
from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sept. 28th at PITA Hall on Plum Island. State Sens. Bruce
Community Announcements
To the Editor,
For quite some time the Rowley Board of Selectmen had been opening

some of its meeting with Community an executive session Connections
without first convening in
open session.
Earlier this year, Attorney General Martha Healey sent a letter to all
towns
and cities listing Business this practice as one of Spotlight
the most frequent violations
of the Commonwealth’s Open Meeting Law.
Late this summer, with no announcement of any kind from the
board or

the administrator’s Real office, Estate I noticed a switch. • For The Sale board is now
convening in open session
as the law requires, with the executive session
properly consigned to the bottom of back of the agenda page.

The Rowley meeting

agenda provides for a citizen query. Anyone can
appear and is guaranteed the “floor” for at least five minutes. More than
a year ago, I ventured
I estimated that
(978) up to 494-4574 nine Plantation residents with an average age of
seventy-five use the
Earlier this year the Town engaged the services of a consulting firm
to advise, schedule and oversee route and extraordinary maintenance,
and where justified, replacement of badly worn roads and sidewalks.
Users including motorists, cyclists and walkers will eventually find better
finished, safer driving surfaces and walkways everywhere in Town. The
Health & Wellness
By J. Peter St. Clair, DMD
Last week I mentioned a recent
question submitted to me via
email. Here it is from Michael:
“I read this article in The Times
today with some concern, and
I wonder what your thoughts
are about it? I’m coming in for
an appointment in about ten
days; so, it’s a timely topic for
me. Thank you for keeping me
healthy!”
In the article entitled “You
Probably Don’t Need Dental
X-rays Every Year”, the author
states:
“The American Dental
Brighter Smiles...
Dental X-Rays - Automatic?
Association says I don’t, and you
may not either. Adults without
apparent dental problems do
not need dental X-rays of any
kind every year, the A.D.A. says.
Adults who properly care for their
teeth and have no symptoms of
oral disease or cavities can go two
to three years between bitewing
X-rays, according to the A.D.A.”
Here was my response to
Michael:
“I agree with the general theme
of the article. However, there
are so many variables, for both
the patient and dentist. It is up
to the dentist and patient to
come up with an agreed upon
frequency of radiographs based
on the philosophy and risk
tolerance of the dentist and what
the patient presents with from a
clinical standpoint. I range with
my patients from 1-3
years for bitewing x-
rays. In your particular
situation, based on the
moderate restorative
dentistry you have
in your mouth and
history of recent decay,
(4) bitewings once
per year would still
be the recommended
frequency. I hope that
helps.”
This is in line with
what the author states
in his article when he
says, “Adults with a
high risk of cavities
(like those with a
history of them)
should receive them at
least every 18 months,
and possibly more
frequently, depending
on the condition of
teeth and gums.”
The author also
brought up the
topic of radiation
accumulation and
states, “All X-rays can be
harmful, though the radiation
dose of bitewings is relatively
low. Of all the medical radiation
patients receive, dental X-rays
account for less than 3 percent.
But the harm from radiation is
cumulative.”
One of the reasons the author
cited as to why dental x-rays
are overused is because it is an
income generator for the dental
office. He says, “For some people,
it’s a needless expense that comes
with needless risk.”
While there may be some
dental offices out there that look
at dental x-rays as an income
generator, it is safe to say that the
majority do not see it that way.
The reason most dental offices
recommend x-rays is to allow for
proper diagnosis in an effort to
keep you healthy. It is important,
however, that the dentist be
mindful of each person’s specific
needs. Yearly bitewing x-rays
should not be automatic.
You should have the
conversation with your dentist
about what your x-ray frequency
should be. There are many
factors to consider. As with any
relationship between health care
provider and patient, there should
be mutual respect. The dentist
needs to respect the patient’s
desire to have the conversation
and the patient needs to respect
the dental professional’s opinion.
We should all be striving for the
same goals.
For
Sale
Twice over the past few weeks and
occasionally in conversation with
buyers or sellers I have been asked
about the term REALTOR® and
what the difference is between that
designation and, real estate agent,
real estate broker and REALTOR®.
Most people don’t know the
difference but by knowing the right
language you are certainly much
more informed about who you are
dealing with, and able to potentially
avoid serious issues down the road.
The definitions below are mine
and the meaning of an agent
and broker does vary from state
to state. It is smart to confirm
what an agent or broker means
before entering into a business
relationship and most importantly
who they represent in a transaction.
To help you understand here are a
few key words so you, too, can tell
the different between real estate
personnel.
Real Estate Agent or Salesperson
Sales people make up a majority
of the workforce. They are licensed
by the state, have taken hours of
real estate courses and passed an
extensive exam. They are required
to work for a real estate broker. Real
Estate Agents earn a percentage of
the broker’s commission when they
sell a home. They are not allowed
to handle any escrow payments,
all monies are handled by the Real
Estate Broker®.
Real Estate Broker
A Real Estate Broker has
undergone additional training
By John McCarthy, Rowley Realty
Pets, of REALTOR®s. Animals, The NAR is Plus
member of the NAR, and therefore
Health & Fitness
to become a broker. They are
also required to have worked
as a salesperson for at least two
years. While brokers do work as
sales people, they are frequently
in charge of supervising the other
salespersons
Town
and running the office.
Common
There may be only one broker “of
record” at each office.
The MLS is a service that real
Realtor®
estate salespeople, brokers and
Often times you will hear a Real
Estate Salesperson or Broker will
call him or herself a REALTOR®.
A person is only qualified to do
this when they become members
of the National Association
the world’s largest professional
association. In order to be a
be a REALTOR®. Salespersons
and Brokers must agree to follow
the NAR’s strict Code of Ethics.
This Code of Ethics protects buyers
and sellers as they know they are
working with someone who must
follow strict guidelines. Making a
point to work with a REALTOR®
instead of an unaffiliated Real
Estate Agent or Broker is one small
guarantee that a buyer or seller will
be treated well.
Seller’s agent, buyer’s agent
and dual agent are designations
taken by a salesperson, broker or
REALTOR® when working with a
client. Here is a brief description
of each:
Seller’s agent
The agent owes the seller
“undivided loyalty, responsible
care, disclosure, obedience o lawful
instruction, confidentiality and
accountability”. The agent puts
the seller’s interest first while also
disclosing any known “material
defects in the real estate”.
Buyer’s Agent
This agent also owes the buyer
“undivided loyalty, responsible
care, disclosure, obedience o lawful
instruction, confidentiality and
accountability”. A buyer’s agent
must put the buyer’s interest first
and negotiate the best price and
terms for their client, the buyer.
Dual Agent
A real estate agent may act as a
dual agent representing both the
seller and buyer in a transaction
but only with the express and
informed consent of both the seller
and buyer.
MLS or Multiple Listing Service
REALTOR®s have access to. There
are many different MLS services
throughout the country. They
import data automatically to many
of the most popular web sites such
criteria automatically once set up by
their agent. The MLS is considered
a complete listing of all of the real
estate available for sale in the area.
There is a cost to subscribe and
only licensed agents and brokers
may join. MLS has many features
that are designed to make the home
search and sale easier for the agent
and subsequently the buyer and
What appeared to be a simple sale became a complicated
process. Kathryn guided us through all the hurdles for reaching a
successful closing. -- Brian and Maryanne Denison, sellers in Ipswich
Without Kathryn’s loyalty and staying power, we doubt that
the transaction would have been successfully consummated. -- Marc
Greenbaum and Linda Stoller, sellers in West Newbury
Kathryn’s positive, “can do” attitude made what had promised
to be a daunting and emotional experience for me as stress free as
possible. -- Marcia J. Cowan, seller in Ipswich
I was quite impressed with Kathryn’s ability to negotiate and
hold both buyers and sellers together during what could have been
deal breaking moments. -- Ned Cutler, seller in Newbury
Kathryn is a delight to work with. We were kept informed on
what was going on, always on time and she answered our phone calls
promptly. -- Jim and Kay McCormick, sellers in Ipswich
We never thought that selling a home after 31 years could go
so smoothly. -- Diane and Carmine Scoppettuolo, sellers in Georgetown
Kathryn’s follow-up and guidance through the selling process
was invaluable. -- Christopher and Mary Dollas, sellers in Newbury
Kathryn O’Brien is in the true sense of the word an “expert” at
week off with some positive movement in several areas. A special
person becomes a partner in at least one of the major plans you’ll
be working on.
BORN THIS WEEK: You work hard and get things done. You
also inspire others to do their best. You would do well heading
up a major corporation.
