As well as creatinganew education hub, the
ground floor of the libraryincorporates a
dedicated social area. An entrance portico links
the study and socialareas withatransition space
that can be used for talksand lectures. With large
classroom spaces, alecturetheatre, cafe and places
for individual andcollaborativestudy,itprovidesa
state-of-the-art, resource-rich environment
intended to help students develop independent
learningskills. The libraryfeatures improved
access to books and electronic resources and
includes adigital learninghub wherestudent
‘digital leaders’ areonhand to help other students
and staffdevelop their digital literacy.
The new assemblyspace and lecturetheatreevoke
auniversity-stylelearning environment with
seminarand workshop areas. It is flanked by anew
arcadethat provides external social space and acts
as averanda to the ShakespeareGarden.
The adjacent Cunliffe Building, previously
containing classrooms for classics, learning
supportand first-form tutor groups, now contains
eight classrooms equipped with cutting edge
technology,including computer suites, interactive
whiteboards, giant projectorscreens, and Apple
TV systems which can connect multiple iPads to a
largescreen. In addition, the building includes the
relocated sanatorium, now better positioned at the
centreofthe campus.
The new buildings incorporate highly-insulated
envelopes, heat-recoveryunits, an air-source heat
pump and photovoltaic panels.
