THE CURTIS
OPERA THEATRE’S
EMPEROR OF
ATLANTIS, 1989
Soon after arriving at the
Curtis Institute of Music
in 1986, Mikael Eliasen
described the job of a
vocal coach in Overtones,
calling it “a profession
baptized by fire…one
just had to go out and
do it.” By 1989, Mr. Eliasen
was one year into his
new position as head
of the opera department,
and no less intrepid.
In November 1986, Curtis
presented the Philadelphia
premiere of Viktor Ullman’s
powerful chamber opera
The Emperor of Atlantis.
