INGREDIENTS
One 2- to 3-pound farm-raised chicken
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 teaspoons minced thyme (optional)
Unsalted butter
Dijon mustard
PREPARATION
Preheat the oven
to 450°F. Rinse
the chicken, then
dry it very well
with paper towels,
inside and out. The less it
steams, the drier the heat, the
better.
Salt and pepper the cavity, then
truss the bird.
Trussing is not difficult, and if
you roast chicken often, it's a
good technique to feel comfortable
with.
When you truss a bird, the
wings and legs stay close
to the body; the ends of the
drumsticks cover the top of the
breast and keep it from drying
out.
Trussing helps the chicken to
cook evenly, and it also makes
for a more beautiful roasted
bird.
Now, salt the chicken—I like
to rain the salt over the bird so
that it has a nice uniform coating
that will result in a crisp,
salty, flavorful skin (about 1
tablespoon).
When it's cooked, you should
still be able to make out the salt
baked onto the crisp skin. Season
to taste with pepper.
Place the chicken in a sauté
pan or roasting pan and, when
the oven is up to temperature,
put the chicken in the oven. I
leave it alone—I don't baste
it, I don't add butter; you can if
you wish, but I feel this creates
steam, which I don't want.
Roast it until it's done, 50 to
60 minutes. Remove it from
the oven and add the thyme,
if using, to the pan. Baste the
chicken with the juices and
thyme and let it rest for 15 minutes
on a cutting board.
Remove the twine. Separate
the middle wing joint and eat
that immediately. Remove the
legs and thighs.
I like to take off the backbone
and eat one of the oysters, the
two succulent morsels of meat
embedded here, and give the
other to the person I'm cooking
with. But I take the chicken butt
for myself. I could never understand
why my brothers always
fought over that triangular tip—
until one day I got the crispy,
juicy fat myself.
These are the cook's rewards.
Cut the breast down the middle
and serve it on the bone, with
one wing joint still attached to
each.
The preparation is not meant
to be superelegant. Slather the
meat with fresh butter. Serve
with mustard on the side and, if
you wish, a simple green salad.
You'll start using a knife and
fork, but finish with your fingers,
because it's so good.
Networking Is
A Life Skill
I
hear it over and over
again: “I can’t network.
I’m an introvert.” “I
don’t know what to
say.” “I don’t want to
brag.” A lot of people don’t
like networking, but the bulk
of them seem to be introverts.
I’m an introvert, too, and I’m
also an entrepreneur, having
to teach myself along the
way how to reach out and
build that body of interested
people who support and buy
what I do. To make it even
harder, I retired in California,
moved back to Minneapolis,
waited a few years, and
then found I wanted to start
a business in a city where
I had no business contacts
and only one friend (a nun).
Business coaches stymied
me from the start, because
they would start by saying:
“First, send a warm letter
to all of your friends, telling
them what you’re doing and
asking for their support.”
Oh. A fellow coach wailed
that she only had 100 friends
on her Christmas card list,
and I was awed by her popularity.
This was an exercise
at which I never excelled,
because my Christmas card
list was five.
Introverts, whom I often call
the “Quietly Brilliant,” are
very likely to have one or
two very deep friendships
and a moderate number of
pleasant acquaintances.
This is dangerous for many
reasons, among them the
fact that those one or two
deep relationships, whether
professional or personal,
can disappear in a wink of
an eye, for such reasons as:
You lose your job
Your company moves and
you don’t
Your supportive boss - who
really liked you - leaves
Divorce - and your best
friend disappears
Marriage (of a friend who
disappears into a different
social circle)
Your BFF is transferred or
moves
Death of a close friend or
loved one
You move! As I did.
And you are stricken, dealing
with loss, and suddenly
finding that you need to
find some way to search for
and find a replacement for
that Very Important Person.
Where do you go? How do
you do it?
If you don’t have a plan and
haven’t been practicing how
to connect with others, the
poorest time to start networking
is when you are
dealing with loss. So start
practicing now.
Here’s my starting point for
introverts who are “socially
cautious”:
Step 1: Find friendly people
with whom to connect.
â¨We introverts tend to
look for reasons why it would
be uncomfortable or even
dangerous to approach other
people. (Years of being told
we’re too quiet, we should
get out more, we should
speak up, etc., have made
us wary of other people and
their potential disapproval
and left us with the idea that
we are somehow odd and
unique. In fact, we’re over
50% of the population.)
Instead, try this simple
exercise for a week or so:
Suspend your sense of
uniqueness and look for
similarities between yourself
and others. If they’re similar
to you, how can they be so
unapproachable?
For example, I am not a
sports fan. Repeat, just N O
T A S P O R T S fan. But because
I was a ballet dancer,
I can relate to how passionate
someone can become
about physical performance
and competition. As I was
growing up, I read every
history book about ballet,
and followed the careers
of prominent dancers, so I
can relate to how concerned
someone can become about
athletes, teams, their history
and their current challenges.
Therefore, I have a basis for
conversation with someone I
might have dismissed as too
different. I can empathize
with the thought of what an
injury does to peak performance
(of oneself or of an
idol), how draining and hu-
Kzn Lifestyle Magazine • Issue 11
5
miliating defeat in an athletic
arena can feel, and so on.
We don’t see a lot of friendly
people out there because
we haven’t believed it. We
tend to think we are unique.
But they are out there, just
as anxious as we are, and
wanting to share their enthusiasms
but don’t, perhaps
believing no one will understand.
Connecting personally with
others is an important first
step to setting up business
connections that last.
Step 2: Reach out and empathize.
Make a simple comment,
not too personal but
delivered with a smile, that
shows you have some idea
of what the other person is
going through. For the clerk
in a store: “It must be tiring
lifting and scanning all those
items every day.” For the
deliveryman, “What a lovely
day for an outdoor job,” or
“This weather must really
make your job harder.” Short
contacts, no further interaction
required (although you’ll
be surprised at how often it
triggers conversation).
Practice in these low-risk
situations and it will become
easier in situations where
you really need to meet new
people.
Step 3: Spread your thanks
around as if they were fertilizer
(because they are). Ditto
for compliments.
Park the perfectionism you
probably have as an introvert:
keep it for serious
stuff, such as your income
tax return, operating heavy
equipment, or doing brain
surgery. It doesn’t belong
in human relationships. Be
forgiving and empathize with
little mistakes if they are not
too serious.
Thank the person who stops
to hold the door open for
you, pauses to let you enter
a line of traffic, the clerk who
discovers you didn’t take
your small change or points
out an even greater bargain
than what you have selected,
the person who asks
about your recent health
issue - all of these people
deserve thanks for their
consideration.
Try thanking a co-worker
who completes a routine job
for which he or she is paid.
You may believe it’s simply
their duty, but anyone can
become fatigued doing their
duty day after day and being
taken for granted.
Interestingly enough, being
thankful openly makes it
easier to point out those little
mistakes others have made.
You are beginning to develop
“social capital.”
These are the preliminary
steps to becoming a socially
confident networker; there
are many more. But if you
can’t recognize how important
this process is, and how
easy it is, once you know the
right steps, you will never
start.
With networking, you can
develop social capital, a
bank account of good will
on which you can draw, but
into which you must make
deposits. Social capital can
bring you:
Help and moral support
when you need it.
Increased inter- & intradepartmental
collaboration
at work.
New business.
A promotion or new job.
Opportunities - more than
you ever dreamed of in more
areas than you now recognize.
... not to mention the increased
warmth and ease
you will feel in numerous
social settings.
Networking is something
we do - or don’t do - all day
long. When you discover
that not networking takes
at least as much energy as
actually doing it (not knowing
where to go for help or
resources, dealing with anxiety
over replacing a loss,
and more) you are on the
path to an expanded future.
Because networking is a
journey, not an action.
5 Snacks That Are Good
for Your Heart’s Health
Introduction
The doctors and other health
workers have dubbed snacks
as unhealthy. However, the
recent researches have
shown that the snacks are
not that bad at all. However,
the choice of the snacks
matters. Most of the readily
available ones are not that
friendly to the body from the
medical standpoint. Despite
this, most of us go for it because
we do not want to toil
it out in the kitchen to make
the healthy ones. If we are
persevering and knowledgeable
enough, we can make
snacks out of many healthy
materials that are readily
available in the kitchen.
Importance
of Healthy
Snacks
Normally, we get unhealthy
snacks from every nook
and corner of any city in our
country. We rely upon this
food to satiate our hunger
when we don’t have time to
spend in the kitchen. Once
in a while, this may seem
okay. But it is harmful to the
cardiovascular system as it
has unhealthy fats that are
capable of clogging the arteries
and veins in our body.
If this happens, the part that
gets blood from these blood
vessels would be damaged
permanently. Moreover, we
start putting up more weight
and increase our waistlines.
At this point, it is not fair to
blame the oils used in the
outlets in our neighbourhood.
The harmful effects
of these fatty substances
are further accentuated by
the sedentary lifestyle that
we lead in our daily lives.
Actually, our lifestyles are
the culprits, not the fatty
substances. This is where
the making of healthy and
heart-friendly snacks comes
in handy. In this short article,
we would be looking at the
5 snacks that are good for
our heart. Do you know that
the consumption of these
snacks also helps us to shed
extra weight by increasing
the rate of metabolism?
1. Mushroom-egg-white
Omelette: This combination
is low in calories and
very tasty. Moreover, it is
perfect for the health of
the heart.
2. Dalia Upma: This
snack helps us to reenergize
ourselves with
the right combination of
essential items. It is rich
in fibre, minerals and
vitamins.
3. Whole Wheat, Egg
White Crepes: This snack
is delicious and rich in nutrients.
Hence, it makes a
healthier snack option for
elders who run the risk of
developing heart disease.
4. Carrot, Green Peas,
Brown Bread Sandwich: It
is rich in proteins, vitamin
A and fibre. Moreover,
it is easy to prepare, and it
requires less time. You can
even add some ketchup,
boiled carrots, peas, etc.
to make it even tastier and
healthier.
5. Egg White Spinach
Omelette: People with borderline
HDL can even think
of taking a snack with egg
white without worrying about
the repercussions, provided
they mix it with spinach.
This article lets people make
healthy snacks at home in a
clean environment. Many of
the raw materials are available
in our kitchen. So, you
get healthy snacks at affordable
rates. For more such
information, you can visit the
Discount Dog Toys Keep Your
Puppies Happily Engaged in Play
It is in the nature of
children (and adults) to
play. It is fun. It is recreational
and you get
some exercise. Dogs
understand the health benefits
of playing with toys as a
way to keep fit and improve
mental agility, much like humans
do with their kids. It is
also necessary to play with
humans and toys so that the
humans keep fit too.
We found dog lovers all
over the world. According
to experts, dog toys are a
must have and are no sheer
luxury. Toys are objects for
play; they ease boredom, improve
learning and restrain
problem behaviors.
Of course, from the pup’s
perspective, humans are
nowhere near the scientific
capabilities of pups to
investigate toys in everyday
situations. Biting, tearing,
pulling, rolling over them,
running around with the toy
held in its mouth are ways
to discover new insights into
the material and physical
properties of dog toys. When
you explore something, do
it thoroughly, is what mama
dog said and the pup religiously
follows it. If you are
a wise human, you get your
beloved dachshund, spaniel
or terrier plenty of toys
from online discount dog
toys boutique to keep them
happily engaged. There are
many toys on the market, but
not all are suitable for your
dog. Some of these products
are incredible and very
misleading. Failure to do so
might result in the pooch
deciding that sofa, cushions,
bed pillows, blankets, socks,
shoes, books and mobile
phones are objects worthy
of his scientific attention and
you run the risk of having
them destructively investigated.
In this case, what is
fun for the mutt is definitely
not fun for the human but
then, humans do fail to see
the light and matters in a
broader perspective.
Before buying toys you
should consider your dog’s
behaviour of play. Most
commonly dogs tear and
shear toys rather than chew
them. They use their molars
and premolars, and they
are found at the back of the
mouth. The dog owner must
consider buying appropriately
sized designer toys that
cannot reach the farther end
of the jaws.
Dogs are also very much
achievement oriented. Give
them a chewy Vuitton toy
and watch them tear the
stuffing out of it. Then they
look at you with an expectation
of praise for their
achievement. After all, they
are doing it to keep you
entertained and from being
bored stiff. They are proud of
their service and do deserve
a pat on their rump.
Some human beings harbor
this peculiar desire to
train their dogs to be smart,
responsive and intelligent.
First off, dogs are not circus
animals so they may resent
it because it is a reflection
on their intelligence. Don’t
they do what they do when
they want to do it in the way
they want to do it? Humans
must be trained in dog ways
and one of the best ways is
to get interactive toys and
learn from a dog how to play
with a dog toy. You might
just discover the pup inside
you waiting to come out.
Human senses are also important
when choosing the
best and safe gaming product
for your pet. By smelling,
one can detect strong
chemicals indicating residual
chemicals. Brightly dyed
fabric may also contain
toxic
ingredients
which are
harmful
to
both the dog
and the owner.
Before buying toys
study labels and
visit manufacturers’
websites for
best safe dog toys.
Some labels are
for advertisement
not really
giving the precise
information
about these
products.
You may
throw a stick or a ball toy
and the dog will happily
fetch it not because you
said so because he knows
the value of the stick or ball.
Sticks and balls can be nice
chewy stuff. Organic dog
toys are even better and
show that the human has
some degree of discernment
about dog preferences for
the natural way of life and
enjoyment.
Of course, there will always
be humans who take a perverse
pleasure in springing
surprises on unsuspecting
mutts in the form of sound
chip toys but then every
smart pup will tolerate such
gifts. The human must be
kept happy at all costs! So, if
you want to be happy, keep
your pet happy with lots of
designer dog toys.
came up with the idea for
the Mufgel after listening to
a radio commercial poking
fun of viral food trends. This
delicious creation has a
crunchy muffin-like top and a
soft and chewy bottom and
comes in a variety of sweet
and savory flavors that often
change. They include Fruity
Pebbles with Funfetti cream
and chocolate chip and the
mozzarella cheese pizza
these beauties are made
every day and they sell out
So sushi donuts are now a
thing. No, we’re not talking
about a chocolate-covered,
deep fried salmon and
avocado roll. A sushi donut
is simply sushi ingredients
fashioned into the shape of
a donut. Created by food
blogger Sam Murphy (aka So
Beautifully Raw), these delicious
works of art are made
by moulding cooled sushi
rice decorated with ingredients
including black sesame,
wasabi, ginger, avocado and
cashew mayo.
Sushi donuts
Extreme milkshakes
They may have been around
for a while but there’s no
letup in the popularity of the
monster milkshake phenomenon.
Among those leading
the charge is Patissez, a
café in Australia’s capital of
Canberra, which offers massive
milkshakes nicknamed
‘The Freakshow’ about the
same size as your head.
They include the Pretzella, a
concoction featuring Nutella,
salty pretzels and lashings
of cream. Another restaurant
making waves for its freaky
milkshakes is Black Tap in
New York City. If the usual
lashings of cream, brownies,
ice cream and biscuits aren’t
enough for you, you can
grab one of their creations
topped with fireworks.
The pizza box pizza
The name is self-explanatory
really. Vinnie’s Pizzeria
in Brooklyn, New York sells
pizza in a pizza box made
entirely out of pizza. As Vinnie’s
said on its Instagram
page, it means: “No more
pizza boxes cluttering up
your fridge or trash. Totally
PIEodegradable.” Delicious
and convenient!
The Conechurro
The light bulb
First it was mason jars, then
it was wooden boards. Now
it’s the light bulb’s turn to
become the latest household
item for hipsters to drink or
eat from. Lights bulbs are
becoming the drinking vessel
of choice with bars now
serving cocktails, coffee,
juices and more in them.
Chomp Eatery in Santa
Monica is one café jumping
on the trend, serving up cold
pressed juices and organic
lemonades in Thomas Edison’s
most famous creation.
If you’re tired of boring ice
cream cones, the Conechurro
will take your ice cream
experience to a whole new
level. Created by popular
New York dessert shop
ChikaLicious, this mouthwatering
creation is an ice
cream cone made of crunchy
churro dough. You can get
your churro cone in a variety
of flavours including cinnamon
streusel and caramel,
sprinkles and chocolate and
raspberry. The cone has the
flakiness of a croissant with
the crunch of an ice cream
cone. Step aside ice cream,
it’s the cone’s time to bask
in the limelight now.
Raclette
Cheese lovers rejoice. There
is a heaven and it’s known as
Raclette. A restaurant aptly
called Raclette NYC offers a
Swiss dish in which a semihard
milk cheese wheel is
melted and scraped off right
on to your plate and across
your roasted vegetables and
charcuterie. The restaurant’s
entire menu is dedicated to
cheese, including a range
of tarts and grilled cheese
toasties. This really is a
cheese lover’s fantasy come
true.
If you’re Australian, you
grew up on this stuff and
it was a staple at every
kid’s birthday party just as
much as Pass the Parcel,
Pin the Tail on the Donkey
For the uninitiated, yes,
this really is just sliced
white bread spread with
margarine or butter and
covered with sprinkles (or
“hundreds and thousands”
if you’re an Aussie), but it’s
taken the internet by storm.
How to Plan
the Perfect
Breakfast
A
healthy breakfast
is very
important as
it affects your
daily performance
as you carry out your
daily activities. It may require
time and planning to have
the right breakfast but your
effort will worth it once you
achieve your desired body
weight.
INTRODUCTION
Have no doubt about itbreakfast
is the most important
meal of the day. Eating
a delicious and nutritious
breakfast is an effective
way to manage food cravings
throughout the day and
provide your body an instant
increase of nutrition at a
peak time when it needs to
be refueled.
Breakfast is a great chance
to fuel your body with lean
proteins, a lot of dietary
fiber and a high content of
antioxidants. Let’s have a
quick look at planning the
right breakfast so that you
can have a great result while
following a healthy diet plan.
THE DETAILS
Examine your calorie consumption.
Breakfast must be
the source of your 25-30%
daily calorie needs. See to it
that you are eating adequate
quality protein at this morning
meal, whether from lean
meat, fresh eggs, beans or
even protein powder.
Calculate the prep time.
Estimate the time you have
in the morning to prepare
your breakfast. If you are
always in a hurry in the
morning, choose a breakfast
option that takes less time to
prepare.
What will be your energy
source for your daily activities?
An extra dose of carbs
in the morning for energy
along with your proteins will
give you a jump start on the
day. Vegetables and fruits
are a good source since you
will use them up during your
day at the office.
Keep your personal favorite
taste in mind. The common
mistake that many dieters
make is forcing themselves
to eat unpleasant foods.
Following a healthy diet plan
doesn’t mean that you have
to eat dull food. Of course,
you need to take in enough
calories so you can get
through the day. You can’t
achieve that it by eating an
unappetizing meal.
Consider how various foods
affect you. If a carb-dense
breakfast makes you feel
sleepy at mid-day, then
switch to a lower carb breakfast.
You must be satisfied with
your food. If it is going to be
a long time before you eat
lunch, add enough fiber to
your breakfast to boost total
digestion time.
Evaluate your body weight
goals. If you need to drop
down calories during breakfast,
switching to an egg
white and vegetable omelet
is a smarter alternative than
a carb-filled bowl of cereal.
The Bottom Line
Having a healthy breakfast
is essential as it affects your
daily performance as you
carry out your daily activities.
It may require time and
planning to have the right
breakfast but your effort will
worth it once you achieve
your desired body weight.
There are lots of healthy
food choices. You can eat
any foods according to your
taste as long as it’s beneficial
to your health. You can
look to international breakfasts
for different ideas on
how to make your morning
meal enticing. Following a
diet plan doesn’t mean having
a dull meal at all. What
matters is how much nutrients
you can get from those
foods and how beneficial
they are to your health.
Understanding
the Cloud
Cloud computing
is on the
rise. Consumers
and
businesses
alike are relying on it for
storage. The large selection
and accessibility make them
a must-have when looking
for off-site storage. They
provide scalability, global
accessibility, a wide selection
of prices, and security.
Individuals or businesses
trying to expand or improve
their storage can, and usually
do, choose cloud above
other options.
The cloud simply puts your
storage somewhere else.
Instead of keeping it on a
local system, such as your
own home computer, you
have it available through an
online storage system. The
storage is in another system
housed and maintained by
a separate company. These
companies make sure that
data remains secure and
accessible for their clients to
avoid leaks or security risks
if someone were to gain access
to the system. You can
keep all files, photos, and
whatever else you upload
on the cloud storage without
fears.
There is no one size fits all
with cloud storage. Even
if everyone has the same
cloud app, the available
storage and pricing will differ.
Some services provide
business-specific cloud
storage options that come at
a price while others provide
free services that target
everyday consumers. Sometimes,
consumer-targeted
cloud storage will have premium
options with monthly
or yearly costs and a bigger
storage capacity.
Using this app, you can
access cloud storage from
nearly anywhere. One of the
biggest selling points with
cloud storage is this accessibility.
Hosted away from your
own devices or computers,
you can access the information
so long as you have the
login credentials. From different
countries and different
devices, you always have
access to your storage.
You do not have to worry
about the possibility of losing
data because of this.
System failures, theft, and
other risks to your data will
not cause you to lose information.
You still have your
information ready to go, and
all without requiring a full
system backup.
It is important to understand
that, while cloud service
may all seem the same, they
are not. The Azure Cloud
Storage from Microsoft is an
example of this. It is a cloud
storage, yes, but not in the
same way as other services.
Its focus is on developers,
not storing information and
files for personal or business
use. A developer will create
the application that they
want to create and then host
it with the Azure web services.
It provides the same
widespread accessibility and
security available with other
cloud services.
Focusing on app development
does set Azure apart
from other cloud services.
The Azure Cloud Storage
gives a developer greater
control and accessibility
over their app, but without
the same requirements and
pressure. A developer can
focus on the development
while allowing Azure to
handle the management and
health monitoring of the app.
Brennan
Anderson
and Hendrik Bester are
looking forward to making
their debut appearance at
the Fedauto Sani Dragon in
association with Mortimer
Toyota when this year’s race
takes place on Friday 30
September and Saturday 1
October.
The two-day Southern
Drakensberg event is fast
growing in stature and with
a second stage climb up to
the finish line at the top of
the iconic Sani Pass, this
year’s Sani Dragon was one
race the pair were not going
to miss.
“We’ve both never been up
Sani Pass, let alone by bike,
so that was definitely the
draw card for us to come
and do the Sani Dragon this
year,” explains Anderson.
“We can’t wait to take part
in this year’s Sani Dragon,”
echoes Bester. “We’re both
in reasonably good shape
and so hopefully we can
have a good two days in the
saddle.”
Despite having never competed
as a team previously
and Anderson being thirteen
years Bester’s junior, the upper
South Coast duo believe
they have the makings of a
good partnership.
““We’ve never raced together
before but both being
from Toti, we are regular
training partners and are
looking forward to racing
the Sani Dragon as team
mates,” says Anderson.
“Perhaps having turned 40
in January, Hendrik is the
experience in the team and
I, at 27 years-old, am more
the ‘exuberance of youth’,”
he laughs.
“I am a reasonably good
climber and Brennan is obviously
still quite young and
fit; hopefully I can hurt the
youngster on the climbs a
little bit!” chuckles Bester.
While unsure of the strength
of the rest of the field, the
pair remains quietly confident
that they can challenge
for a podium place next
weekend.
“We’ll definitely look to give it
our all while we’re out there,”
says Anderson.
“We’ve been training as
much as possible throughout
the winter, and even before
then, and recently we’ve
been trying to prepare the
lungs as best we can for
the Dragon’s climb up Sani
Pass.
“Even though we’ll be riding
through such a beautiful part
of the world, we’ll look to go
as hard as we can on both
days and then we can appreciate
the view once we’ve
crossed the finish line at the
top of Sani Pass and are
heading back down again.”
Bester, who finished second
at the Sappi Scottburgh
MTB Race in mid-August,
believes the pair take some
good confidence with them
into the Sani Dragon encounter.
“Scottburgh was definitely
my best result of the year but
I’ve also picked up a few age
group podiums throughout
the year as well.
“I managed to get an eighth
at the Tour de Krantz recently
too – an event where
Brennan and I actually
ended up riding a lot of the
race together.
“We train together too
and so know each other’s
strengths quite well, so I
think we’re both quite confident
and feeling good about
the Sani Dragon,” explains
Bester.
to the 2016 Fedauto Sani
Dragon in association with
Mortimer Toyota on Friday
30 September and Saturday
1 October eager for another
memorable two days
of riding and an improved
performance from their tenth
placed effort last year.
With exciting young talents
Reinhard Zullhuber
and Marc Fourie donning
Fedauto’s colours this time
around, Bernstein and
Van der Linde, representing
Mortimer Toyota, hope
for another strong showing
while again focusing on enjoying
their time in Southern
Drakensberg.
“The Fedauto Sani Dragon
in association with Mortimer
Toyota is just a brilliant event
that Chris and I thoroughly
enjoyed being part of last
and can’t wait to take part
in again this year,” beams
Bernstein.
“We’ve trained hard throughout
the winter and made
some big gains so it would
be nice to improve on our
top ten finish from last year,
but if we could just improve
on our time – ideally by
about forty minutes or so
– then we’d still be really
pleased.”
Tackling the Sani Dragon
rather than the shorter Sani
Dragon Lite, Bernstein and
Van der Linde are regular
riding partners and return to
this year’s event with fond
memories from last year’s
race still at the forefront of
their minds.
“The Sani Dragon is one
you just have to pencil onto
the calendar and a race we
will be coming back to every
single year!” says Bernstein
“We just had a such a lekker
time last year and couldn’t
wait for entries to open so
that we could book our spot
at this year’s race.
“I talk about the Sani Dragon
to absolutely everyone back
at home and its great that
we’re going to have another
team from Newcastle joining
us for this year’s race!”
While the first stage showcases
the district spectacularly,
the climb up Sani Pass
to the first line on day two
remains a stiff challenge for
many.
For Bernstein and Van der
Linde though, the effort on
the climb is rewarded with
interest upon reaching the
summit and crossing the finish
line.
“There is no doubt about it
– the climb up Sani Pass is
testing for sure.
“Chris is a bit of a mountain
goat, so I just let him go and
do my best to get up there
as quickly as I can.
“Hopefully this year I can
stick with him a bit longer
than I did last year.
“Either way though, when
you get to the top you realise
it was worth all that hard
work and more as take in
that absolutely incredible
view from up there!
“Also, having crossed the
finish line at the top, you’re
then able to make your way
back down at your leisure
and I don’t think I’ve ever
stopped and taken quite as
photos during a race as I did
as we came down Sani Pass
last year,” explains Bernstein.
Joining Fedauto’s Zellhuber
and Fourie and Mortimer
Toyota’s Bernstein and Van
der Linde at this year’s Sani
Dragon are Fedauto/Russell
White’s Heinrich Zellhuber –
Reinhard’s younger brother
– and Ethan Richard.
The 2016 Fedauto Sani
Dragon in association with
Mortimer Toyota takes place
on Friday 30 September and
Saturday 1 October. Entries
can be submitted and more
KZN look to
top Africa
T20 Cup
Keshav Maharaj and the rest
of his Hollywoodbets Dolphins
members will hope to lead
the KwaZulu-Natal team to
the top of the Pool D log when
they take on Boland, Gauteng
and Eastern Province in the
Africa T20 Cup this weekend.
Pool D log
Durban – Hollywoodbets
Dolphins
Keshav
Maharaj,
Robbie Frylinck, Cameron
Delport, Sibonelo Makhanya,
Rabian Engelbrecht
and Senuran Muthusamy
will form the spine of the
KwaZulu-Natal team taking
on Boland, Eastern Province
and Gauteng in Pool
D of the Africa T20 Cup
at Boland Park, Paarl this
weekend.
The sextet will look to
draw on their Franchise
experience as well as their
combined knowledge of
the Provincial landscape
to overcome three strong
opponents in the final set of
Pool stage fixtures in order
to earn themselves a spot
in the play-offs alongside
the already qualified North
West Seef Dragons, Zimbabwe
and Northern Cape
next weekend.
“We’ve had a good build
up,” explains KZN coach,
Roger Telemachus.
“Some of the guys were
overseas during the winter,
playing in the UK or elsewhere,
or with the national
academy and SA ‘A’ setups.
“Those who have been
around have been working
hard with the Dolphins
squad and so all in all the
guys have already played
a fair amount already so
hopefully we can hit the
ground running this weekend.”
Joining the more experienced
campaigners in this
weekend’s KZN outfit are
KZN Academy graduates
top order batsmen Bruce
Kerr and Dudu Zondo, wicket-keeper/batsman
Jason
Oakes, left-arm orthodox
Smangaliso Nhlebela and
seamers Okuhle Cele and
Jesse Smit.
“This is a great chance for
some of our youngsters to
show what they’ve got and
to put in a few big performances
at the next level,”
says Telemachus.
“The guys have been working
hard at the Academy
all winter and so now it’s a
chance for them to hopefully
take the next step in
their careers.”
The former South African
quick acknowledges
KZN face a tall task this
weekend but believes his
charges, led by the squad’s
Hollywoodbets Dolphins
players, can replicate their
knock-out phase qualification
efforts of 2015 or
better.
“With guys like Keshav (Maharaj),
Cameron (Delport)
and Robbie (Frylinck) in
the squad we’ve got some
great,experienced heads
that can guide the youngsters.
“Rabian (Engelbrecht) is fit
and has looked fantastic
in pre-season and Sibz
(Makhanya) has also captained
his country at U19
level, so they will be important
too.
“We’re up against three
quality sides this weekend
but we’re just focusing on
trying to put it all together
on our side because we
believe that if we can do
that then we’re a very good
team as well,” says Telemachus.
KZN square off against
hosts Boland on Friday,
Gauteng on Saturday and
Eastern Province on Sunday.
