Holcomb Observatory and Planetarium: Holcomb Observatory and Planetarium has been serving Butler University students and the Indianapolis public for nearly 60 years. The observatory is one of the largest public observatories in the world. It houses a 38-inch Cassegrain reflector in addition to a number of smaller telescopes. Why Immigration Reform is Important to Me by Fatima T. Johnson, Esq. I am an immigration attorney. Although my career does not define me, my world has significantly narrowed due to my choice of profession. That being said, I am often called upon to explain concepts such as why immigration reform is important. I try to do this in a fair way, but I do not pretend to be free of bias. I am biased because I am the daughter of an immigrant. My mother will not tell you, but to me, she is the embodiment of the American dream. She came as a young girl from Panama to New York City in the 1960’s. I grew up with a superficial knowledge of the sacrifices my family made to get to the U.S., but as I became I woman, I developed an intimate appreciation for how complicated life was and how moving to another country could potentially complicate things more. This appreciation has made me especially sensitive to the plight of immigrants. I would not want to live anywhere else in the world, so it does not strike me as odd that someone would want to live in the United States of America. But, it is the “why” behind their choice to immigrate here that I have been fortunate enough to have my clients share with me. The majority of my clients come to the U.S. to be with their families, but many come because they are fleeing persecution, extreme poverty, war, famine, gangs—things that are widespread in their countries, beyond what we see in the worst of areas here. They feel they have no choice but to leave their countries of origin and they do it at great cost to themselves. They leave children, spouses, parents, and friends behind, exchanging the life they knew, for another, so that their families back home can survive. As an act of sacrifice for others, they come to a foreign land where they are often met with hostility. And the cause of the hostility is often nothing more than a short memory. People do not know the stories of how their own ancestors came to this same country, under similar conditions, and were often greeted with the same hostile reception from those who were already established in here. I am not by any means a proponent of open borders. I know that our country can only handle so many people and we would not be safe if everyone could come and go as they pleased. However, the lack of compassion for others, even as some of our country’s economic, agricultural and military policies continue to destabilize other countries, is a far cry from the famous words emblazoned on the Statue of Liberty—“Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” Maybe it is too idealistic to think that people would feel anything for the millions of immigrants who are a part of this country, yet living in the shadows. Their status renders them ineligible for social security benefits, Medicaid, Medicare, student aid, and other benefits that people assume they get. We have an entire segment of our population whose common trait is their vulnerability because so often, people who know that immigrants have so much to lose, use that as an opportunity to victimize and exploit them. So to those who do not care, I explain that reform can help expand the economy, contribute to higher overall average wages, generate more consumer spending, and spur new demand for residential housing construction. By supporting stronger economic growth, immigration reform can also reduce the federal budget deficit substantially. No matter what the reason, no matter what the political affiliation, the time has come to acknowledge that these immigrants, these PEOPLE, are here. They exist and they are a part of our country.
