Things to do....

Stratosphere Casino Hotel’s Tower is your place if you are into extreme thrill rides.

Located at the top of the Las Vegas Strip, the Stratosphere’s Tower provides panoramic

views of the Las Vegas area. The Tower, at 1,149 feet is the tallest freestanding tower

in the United States, and is the tallest building west of the Mississippi River. The

elevators to the observation desk take guests from ground level to the top in just 30

seconds. On the deck are three of the most extreme thrill rides – The Big Shot, the

Insanity and the X-Scream – you will ever encounter!

The Big Shot rises above the observation deck to the top of the tower - 1,081 feet

above ground. Riders are thrust to the top of the tower at 45 mph, and then dropped

back in a fast freefall to the observation deck. Before you can catch your breath, you’re

sent skyward again! The ride can accommodate 16 daredevils at a time, and riders

experience 4 “G”s on the way up and negative “G”s on the way back down.

If you are an extreme daredevil, you might try riding the “Insanity”. The Insanity

will remind you of the swing ride your children rode at the local fair; however the

comparisons end there! Riders sit in seats that circle around at a moderate pace and

the ride seems relaxing – until the safety fencing slides back and the ride moves out

64 feet over the side of the observation deck – and you are dangling 866 feet above

the ground! The speed increases, propelling riders to angles of 70 degrees, so you

are looking straight down!

The final ride on the Stratosphere’s observation deck is perhaps the most terrifying

of the three rides. The X-Scream looks like a giant teeter totter and seats eight

passengers. However, once started, the slide rises up and the riders take the trip

down the 69 foot of roller coaster track at a 30 degree angle – and it extends 27 feet

over the edge of the tower.

The cost of riding the adrenaline pumping rides are $21.95 for one ride, $25.95 for two

and $29.95 to experience all three. Ultimate thrill riders can purchase an all day ride

Railroad Museum

Visitors can ride an authentic locomotive down

the original tracks originally used to bring

supplies to the Hoover Dam. Volunteers aboard

share fun facts about the railroad. The trip is

The lingo used inside of casinos may sound a little like a language

of its own. Familiarizing yourself with the words used

on the casino floor will make your gambling experience more

memorable – and make you sound like a professional.

Bluff: in a card game, raising a weak or worthless hand in an attempt

to drive other players out of the game.

Comps: complimentary gifts or points given to players when they

play more at that casino.

Flush: A hand in poker that consists of five cards of the same suit.

Full House: A poker hand made up of a three of a kind along with a

pair.

Hit: in Blackjack, the term used to get another card from the dealer

to add to your hand.

Pit Boss: a person who supervises all the games and casino personnel

in an assigned area; checking for cheating, settling disputes and

handing out the comps.

Point: A terms in craps for the starting number for the craps game

that the player must roll again before that player sevens out.

Push: A term used when the dealer and a player have the same

hand; no money changes hands.

Straight: A poker hand consisting of five cards in consecutive order.

These settlers traveled through these

waterways to get to the Old Spanish

Trail.

• Artesian wells supporting meadows

were located in the Las Vegas Valley

during the 1800s.

• John C. Fremont was the leader of

scientists for the U. S. Army Corps of

Engineers. His travels of the Las Vegas

Valley occurred in 1844 when the city

was still owned by Mexico.

• After annexation by the U. S. Brigham

Young sent over thirty Church of Jesus

Christ of Latter-day Saints missionaries

into the Paiute Indian population.

These missionaries were led by William

Bringhurst. Brigham wanted to convert

this Indian population to Mormonism.

• In 1905 Las Vegas became a railroad

town. The one hundred ten acres of

land the Los Angeles, San Pedro, and

Salt Lake Railroad were put up for

auction on May 15, 1905.

• Montana Senator William A. Clark,

R.C. Kerens, and U. S. Senator Thomas

Kearns all once owned this railroad.

• In 1910 the St. Joan of Arc Catholic

Church was established in the city of

Las Vegas, Nevada.

• Most of the original large scale Las

Vegas casinos were funded and/or

managed by mob figures. Two of the

most well known of these mob figures

are Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky.

• In the 1960s Howard Hughes

purchased several casinos and hotels

in the Las Vegas area.

• The median household income for the

city of Las Vegas is $53,000.

• The City of Las Vegas was incorporated

on March 16, 1911; it sits at an

elevation of 2000 ft and encompasses

113.3 square miles.

• The Las Vegas area has seen its

population increase by 18.6% over the

past 10 years.

• The first casino was licensed in 1931;

today the number of licensed gambling

places in Las Vegas is 1701.

• Annually, 36.7 million tourists visit the

Las Vegas area.

• Almost half of the city’s residents

(48.3%) live AND work in Las Vegas.

• Record temperatures in Las Vegas

range from a record high of 118 in

1931 to a record low of 8 in 1963. The

Las Vegas area has an average rainfall

of only 4.61 inches/year.

• The famous “Las Vegas Strip” is not

in the city limits of Las Vegas; it sits in

unincorporated Clark County.

• Seventeen of the 20 biggest hotels in

the United States are in Las Vegas.

• On an average day, 230 marriage

licenses are issued in Las Vegas,

resulting in almost 12,000 marriages a

year!

• The famous “Welcome to Las Vegas”

sign was built in 1959.
