Craftsman Farms:
Craftsman Farms was founded in 1908 in Parsippany-Troy Hills, Morris County, New Jersey, by noted early
20th century designer Gustav Stickley as a farm and school for the Arts and Crafts movement. It remained
in use until 1915 when it was sold to a family and became a private house.
When threatened by development in 1989, the home was purchased by the Township of Parsippany-Troy
Hills through eminent domain. The property is operated as a museum, also known as the Stickley Museum
at Craftsman Farms, and is operated by the Craftsman Farms Foundation.
The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms is open for tours year round Thursday through Sunday. The grounds,
a town park, are open from dawn till dusk.
Frelinghuysen Arboretum:
This beautiful 127-acre Frelinghuysen Arboretum offers visitors a serene place to
relax as well as to learn more about plants well-suited to the soils and climate
woodlands, meadows, beautiful gardens and distinctive collections of trees
and shrubs make the ideal setting for leisurely strolls. Self-guiding trail booklets
are available at the reception desk to enrich one’s visit to this singular property.
Today, The Frelinghuysen Arboretum is also a regional center for horticultural activities, including educational
programs, special tours, group tours, special events, and a comprehensive collection of botanical
literature. The Joseph F. Haggerty Education Center and Home Demonstration Gardens have been designed
to expand the Park Commission’s services to the gardening public in a barrier-free environment.
of New Jersey’s railroads to the public since 1985. Offering family
Sea Girt Lighthouse
Nestled within an L-shaped Victorian building, the Sea GirtLighthouse first shone in 1896. Like most lighthouses of
the day, its fourth-order Fresnel lens revolved on ball bearing driven by complex clockworks. With just one winding,
the light turned for 7 1/2 hours, turning red for two seconds out of six. Originally built to bridge the 40-mile gap
between Barnegat Light and the Twin Lights of Navesink, this square red bricktower attached to a keeper’s dwelling
was decommissioned in1945. The interior of the lighthouse has been meticulously restored by a local citizens
committee and furnished in keeping with its historical period. Open Sun. 2 pm - 4 pm the week after Easter to the
week after Thanksgiving. Closed on major holidays. Free admission. Donations welcome. 732-974-0514.
Dear Mr. Defino,
We would like to thank you for doing such a wonderful
job resurfacing and sealing the dam. Your employees
worked very quickly to get our time sensitive project
completed on schedule and sight was left clean. Our
project was completed May 2012, three years later,
(May 2015),on current inspection only minor spider
cracks have been found. We would appreciate it if
you could inspect the dam yourself and give us a price
quote to reseal it so we may keep it in good condition.
Sincerely,
Heather Andrews
Historic New Jersey
Pequannock Spillway
The Pequannoc Spillway is a run-of-the-river spillway
constructed in the 1920s as part of the Morris
Canal system in the Pompton Plains section
of Pequannock, New Jersey on one bank of the
river and Wayne, New Jersey on the other bank.
The spillway creates usable waterfront land out
of swamps and provides water retention by cre-
ating a backwater on the Ramapo River. The
structure is listed as part of the Morris Canal on
the New Jersey Register of Historic Places as well
as the National Register of Historic Places. It is a
sister structure to the Pompton dam which lies on
the Pompton River.
The Pompton Dam is an early 20th-century concrete
spillway over 270 feet wide, equal in girth
to the Great Falls of Paterson located along
the Pompton River a quarter-mile south of the
Pompton dam and associated guard bank in
Pequannock Township’s Aquatic Park. The dam
is a run-of-the-river spillway, which traverses the
width of the river and at normal water elevation
allows water to spill over its face. The structure
is 22 feet tall, though possesses only an 8 inch
over 3 foot grade on the upstream side. An associated
guard house sits near the site in poor
repair.
Like its sister structure the Pompton Dam, the
Pequannoc Spillway was originally made entirely
of timber. Constructed in the early 19th
century the Pequannoc Spillway aided in navigation
upriver along the Morris Canal during its
almost 100 years of use. The structure was also
part of a system to maintain water levels along
portions of the Pompton River and Ramapo
River which were at the time of their construction
a part of the Morris Canal.
The removal of the spillway was advocated
against in the 1920s by C.C. Vermuele, De-
commissioning Engineer for the Morris Canal
and Dr. Henry B. Kümmel, General Manager
of the Morris Canal and former New
Jersey State Geologist. Both argued that
removing the structure would reduce the
surrounding lands to a series of “ill smelling
mud flats,” noting this would devalue the
adjacent lands. On Vermuele’s suggestion,
the State of New Jersey has upgraded the
dam to a concrete structure providing the
same operation as it had previously performed.
Though the Pequannoc Spillway is silted on
the upstream side such that the backwater
it creates is no longer navigable, the spillway
still sheds water over the entirety of this
face creating a regional tourist attraction.
