“The purpose of this organization
is the maintenance of a social club
for the social enjoyment,
entertainment, amusement, and
cultural association of its
members.”
The President’s 2016 Message
Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of the Houston-Missouri City Domino Club members, I bring you greetings.
It is through the grace of God that we are able to continue to grow in our commitment to share the culture of the
Caribbean and host this, our 7 th Anniversary Banquet. Whatever we do as a social club we always put our faith in
the Almighty God, and He has not failed us. Thank You Lord for all the blessings and favor that You have
bestowed upon us, and the doors of opportunity that You have opened for us in the Houston-Missouri community.
During 2015, we had a vision to start an annual Galveston Caribbean Festival. In December of the same year, we
set our sights on our new venture and started putting people, policies, and procedures in place to make the dream a
reality. On April 23, 2016, our dream was realized! We had over fifteen hundred (1500) people attend the GAFF
Toppers Outdoor Center and witnessed one of the best events held in Galveston in 2016. Luciano and Leon
Coldero were the Headliners along with Houston’s own Galaxy Band. The show was fantastic!
On May 29, 2016, Kansas City and Dallas West Indian Social Clubs visited us for the annual Owen Sterling
Domino Tournament. It was a highly competitive event. Needless to say, Houston Missouri City Domino Club
successfully defended the championship. We visited Dallas in June and retained the Dean Clark Trophy. Our club
is proud and happy that we won, but we are more excited about the fact that our great friendship, fellowship, and
camaraderie with our sister clubs in Dallas and Kansas City are at their highest peak right now.
As usual, we celebrated Jamaica’s Independence at Bear Creek Park. Memorial weekend rains saturated the park,
but it did not dampen our spirits. Everyone who turned out on August 7 th to celebrate Jamaica’s Independence had
an excellent time.
September 2016 is a month that will be indelibly etched in the memory of our clubites. The Houston Chronicle
visited our club September 2, 2016. The reporter and photographers stayed, mingled, and interviewed us for almost
four (4) hours. On Labor Day (September 5) The Houston Chronicle put out an article about the Houston Missouri
City Domino Club. The headline read: “Connecting the Caribbean Immigrants Connect Through Dominos.”It was
one of our proudest moments when we realized that The Houston Chronicle, which is the largest newspaper in
Houston (America’s fourth largest city), would recognize the Houston Missouri City Domino Club. Great things
are happening in our domino club, and even greater things are yet to come!
When we started our club seven (7) years ago, the vision was to own our own building. In our wildest dream, we
did not believe it was possible to see this reality in seven short years. On September 12, 2016 we paid for and
received the deed to 16030 Blue Ridge Road, Missouri City, an old fire station sitting on 1079 acres of land. The
vision continues because our ultimate goal is to be successful enough to be able to give tangible help to our West
Indies community.
And so tonight we celebrate because we have so much to be thankful for. Speaking of which, all our successes
would not be possible without the support of our community of people, especially the Jamaica Nurses Association,
West Indies Social Club of Kansas City, Dallas West Indies Association, our local business sponsors, and all the
different Caribbean Associations.
Tonight’s festivities promise to be as good or better than previous years. Our entertainment committee has put
together a very good program of dances, singers, a fashion show, and music from the J-Unit Band.
Ladies and gentlemen, I wish to thank all for coming. I hope you will enjoy the event. In closing, I leave you with
a charge. Please don’t forget… “don’t sweat the small stuff.” Do something nice for someone and don’t tell
anyone about it. Your action no matter how small makes a difference. Enjoy the festivities, once again thank you
for being here tonight.
Healthier Eating During the Lifecycle
What are our food preferences? Do we eat the same foods as we did 5-10
years ago? Can we tolerate the same foods we used to eat growing up? Life is
change, and with that comes preferences, limitations, and allergies to certain foods.
Has anyone experienced some of these changes? I, myself, have had to switch to
almond or soy milk, as, since my 30’s, regular milk causes bloating and indigestion,
but I used to love cow’s and goat milk!
Generally speaking, because some adults tend to be less active than our
younger peers, we need fewer calories. But those calories need to be nutrient dense,
to prevent malnutrition, be it obesity, or anorexia, to name a couple disorders. Some
nutrient deficient diseases may go un-noticed, and over time, the individual accepts
their feelings as “old age”. Do you know anyone like this? Excessive fatigue, for
instance, could be a sign of anemia, depression, thyroid disease; Brittle, dry hair is
often a sign on an inadequate diet; ridges or spoon-shaped nails could be an indicator
of low iron, for instance. Discuss with your doctor any concerns you have, so he/she
is better able to address them with supplements, diet, exercise, therapy, counseling,
or other treatment. Keep up with your doctor’s appointments.
Vitamins D, Calcium (to prevent bone loss), Vitamin B12 (body’s ability
to absorb from foods declines with age), Vitamins A, C, and E (rich in
antioxidants—slows progression of some cancers), Iron, Protein, and Water (some
seniors are less likely to feel thirst—we need at least 8 glasses/day), Fiber (to
decrease constipation, and lower cholesterol levels). We should aim to use less salt
(use herbs mainly), limit high fat foods, limit alcohol, esp. hard liquor intake
(damaging to liver), maintain healthy teeth and gums, and keep a stocked pantry, for
when on is not able to go to the store, or in a inclement weather. Include such items
as canned fruit and veggies, packed in own juice, and limited salt, whole wheat
pasta, brown rice, rolled oats, canned meat and fish. Olive and canola oil, baked
beans, bottled water. Call on family/ friends when needed.
So, in closing , make water the beverage of choice, maintain an active
social life, get enough good quality sleep, walking is a healthy, inexpensive habit,
eat to satisfy hunger, attend cultural and intellectual activities, read and write, if able
to, to keep the mind sharp, limit sweets, and prepare/eat easily digested foods.
Remember, LIFE IS NOT A REHEARSAL! ENJOY!
Joke of the Day
A Jamaican in New York can’t find a job, so he puts a sign outside that says:
A lawyer thinks this is a great opportunity to teach this Jamaican a lesson and earn
an easy $1,000.00 so he goes to the clinic.
Lawyer: “I have lost my sense of taste.”
Jamaican: “Nurse, bring medicine from bottle number 22 and put 3 drops in this
patient’s mouth.”
Lawyer: “Ugh… this is kerosene!”
Jamaican: “Congratulations, your sense of taste is restored. Give me $100.00
The lawyer, annoyed at being duped so easily, goes back after a few days to try to
recover his money.
Lawyer: “I have lost memory. I cannot remember anything.”
Jamaican: “Nurse, bring medicine from bottle number 22 and put 3 drops in this
patient’s mouth.”
Lawyer: “No way! That is kerosene. You gave it to me last time for restoring my
taste.”
Jamaican: “Congratulations. You got your memory back. Give me $100.00.”
The fuming lawyer pays him, then determined to get back his $200.00 plus $800.00
extra, he comes back a week later, walking with a white cane.
Lawyer: “My eyesight has become very weak.”
Jamaican: “Well, I don’t have any medicine for that, so take this
$1,000.00.” (hands him a note)
Lawyer: (staring at the note) “But this is $50.00, not $1,000.00!”
Jamaican: “Congratulations, your eyesight is restored. Let me have it back and
give me $1,000.00.”
The Quest for Triple Crown
It was spring of March 17,2008 The scenery was tense. Everyone in Beijing national stadium
appeared to be at the edge of their seats, anxiously awaiting the sound of the gun
which would signal the sprinter in the women's 100m Olympic final. I can only imagine
at least that was the case in Jamaica and the diaspora. Jamaicans awaited with bated breath
as the line consisted of three of our own who were seemingly pre-destined to ignite a trail
of legacy and an awe inspiring memories. The crack of the gun and so it all began. A 5feet
21yrs old woman attired in black, gold, and green hair flawlessly decorated with flowers
with braces encased teeth bared in a smile reminiscent of the fete. Exuberance filtered the
airwaves as a Jamaican crossed the line first in 10.78sec.swiftly followed by team-mates
Sherone Simpson, and Kerron Stewart. Undoubtedly it was an amazing moment. Jamaica
not only swept the medals for that particular race, but the world were introduce to the record
breaking phenomena of the pocket rocket; able to dash out of the starting blocks before
you could wink your eyes. Shelly-Ann Fraser became the first Jamaican female
100m gold medalist in history of the Olympics which plummeted her way into the hearts
of Jamaicans at home and abroad. Four years later at the London Olympics Fraser-Pryce
defended her 100m title. Having been victorious once again garnered her notoriety, love
and fame from the masses. Time progress to the year 2016.
Excitement and chatter were re-introduced by the people;hence came the opportunity for
her to achieve what no-one else had ever done. Win the Olympics gold medal for a third
consecutive time. Like so many others, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce had her eyes focus on
the prize. Despite holding a litany of first the Jamaican golden-girl craved that third Olympic
gold which would be the icing on the cake, or the star on top of the mountain. While
on the verge of greatness there came great competitors. SFP won all her heats leading up
to the finals, the desire and hunger for that Olympic gold medal was shared by many new
faces, even older athletes within the starting blocks. The silence was deafening as the
world awaited the sound of the gun, sadly Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was defeated by an
injured toe and fellow team-mate Elaine Thompson.
The Epiphany of Embracing the Culture through Entertainment
From the little island of wood and water spring forth an authentic unique culture. A culture with a vivacious
philosophy that genuinely respects the core values of its motto, national anthem, flag and colors that represent the island of
Jamaica. The Jamaican culture in its entirety is one of its kinds in that we pride ourselves in a structured setting where as
Individual islanders we know who we are, and what our purpose is to society. Depicted from the proverb “we little but we
talawah” is sure to showcase much attributes from the small island such as sports in track and field, soccer and cricket.
Clubhites in diaspora continues to engage themselves with their sports abilities in order to stay abreast of what trending in
the sport arena The Houston Missouri City Dominoes Club strives to keep the culture alive through the routine of playing
dominoes games and Ludi. Playing these games allows patron brains to be stimulated and use their critical thinking skills
analyze their thought process and solve the game at hand. Perhaps I must state playing dominoes helps you to keep your
arithmetic skills up to par in fact players must know their numbers in order to enter the game.
Equipping the cognition of individuals with well-rounded education through reggae music, playing dominoes and
ludi games will have a tremendous impact on society wherein our motto “Out of Many one People” will sound an alarm
that indeed the words of the motto is vibrant not only in the club but; throughout the communities and surrounding cities of
the greater Houston areas. Entertaining others through music and dancing, individuals are able to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
The Dominoes club serves its purpose in many ways from listening to the sounds of reggae music and jamming to the
beats holding down the rhythm individuals benefited from a full body workout burning calories. From dancing and doing
diverse dance moves the body is getting rid of excess toxins maintaining proper body core moving the body into different
range of motions. After a complete dance sessions clubhites and other patron improves their cardio vascular system, clear
their minds, laugh with others, build healthy relationships and feel better in their overall bodies and attitudes.
Visiting the Houston Missouri City Dominoes Club on a Friday evening after a full week of work offers such a relaxation
atmosphere for many. Listening to the words of the music playing, recital of poetry, men playing dominoes ladies
playing ludi is phenomenal. Playing dominoes and ludi is using much logic which requires the brains to process new ideas
and deliver correct answers to the players to compete with their partner in winning games at the club and competing in annual
tournaments. The unity that’s displayed among the clubhites elevates the true power of the green, yellow, and black
colors. Depicted from the words of the Legendary Robert Nester Marley he stated we must “emancipate ourselves from
mental slavery none but ourselves can free our minds and have no fear for atomic energy”. The artist is telling us through
reggae music that we ought not to be caught up in mental slavery and keep our minds pure from atomic energy wherein humanity
can function and be productive in global society. Therefore through reggae music there’s a positive effect in bringing
forth healing, peace and tranquility to mankind. Been in the presence of the islanders at the Dominoes Club will allow
you stay fit, alert and maintain stamina to face life challenges.
The philosophy of the club is to reach beyond the walls of the club and assist the weak making them strong again,
helping the fallen brother sister or families during their time of illness death or whatever the situation may be. Catering to
the whole aspect of the human being is what the Houston Missouri City Domino Club practice and demonstrates. As a
member of the Missouri City Dominoes Club I am delighted to say the clubhites are like a part of my family tree. Whenever
I am absent from the club there’s that phone call or a text to check upon me. Recalled sick and admitted in the hospital it
was the presence of the president and members who took time out of their busy schedule to visit with me. One doesn’t have
to think that they are alone and feel cast out in despair.
So if you’re looking for a place to relax in your spare time I encourage you to visit the Houston Missouri City Dominoes
Club and feel the irie vibes, dine on some authentic curry goat rice and peas, fried plantain, beef patties, mannish water,
jerk pork, wine up your waist line, listen to the islander speak in their native language (Patwa) then laugh from the
clubhites comedic moments. You will be a total different person leaving better than the way you enter the club as you have
taken off a heavy load from your shoulders. One Love!
“ Words to Go ‘By(e)’”
This year marks the 7th anniversary of the Houston Missouri City Domino Club. We have
accomplishment a lot over this short period. This achievement would not be possible without your hard
work and contributions. We sincerely appreciate your effort(s) and look forward to a harmonious
relationship as we take the next step towards a brighter future.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to the following persons for their outstanding contributions
to our club: Mr. Almond Davis and Sunburst Trading Company (for their generous donations to the
club throughout the years), Mrs. Orlene Scott-Dixon (for her effective Facebook advertising, that
generates so much support for the organization), and Ms. Rosemarie Lindsay (for here untiring effort).
Once again Courtyard by Marriott has donated a one-night hotel stay with complimentary breakfast, as
tonight’s door prize.
We appreciate the relationship we have during the first seven years of our growth, and look forward to
another harmonious relationship as we move forward to the new home.
