The Quest for Triple Crown
It was spring of March 17,2008 The scenery was tense. Everyone in Beijing national stadium
appeared to be at the edge of their seats, anxiously awaiting the sound of the gun
which would signal the sprinter in the women's 100m Olympic final. I can only imagine
at least that was the case in Jamaica and the diaspora. Jamaicans awaited with bated breath
as the line consisted of three of our own who were seemingly pre-destined to ignite a trail
of legacy and an awe inspiring memories. The crack of the gun and so it all began. A 5feet
21yrs old woman attired in black, gold, and green hair flawlessly decorated with flowers
with braces encased teeth bared in a smile reminiscent of the fete. Exuberance filtered the
airwaves as a Jamaican crossed the line first in 10.78sec.swiftly followed by team-mates
Sherone Simpson, and Kerron Stewart. Undoubtedly it was an amazing moment. Jamaica
not only swept the medals for that particular race, but the world were introduce to the record
breaking phenomena of the pocket rocket; able to dash out of the starting blocks before
you could wink your eyes. Shelly-Ann Fraser became the first Jamaican female
100m gold medalist in history of the Olympics which plummeted her way into the hearts
of Jamaicans at home and abroad. Four years later at the London Olympics Fraser-Pryce
defended her 100m title. Having been victorious once again garnered her notoriety, love
and fame from the masses. Time progress to the year 2016.
Excitement and chatter were re-introduced by the people;hence came the opportunity for
her to achieve what no-one else had ever done. Win the Olympics gold medal for a third
consecutive time. Like so many others, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce had her eyes focus on
the prize. Despite holding a litany of first the Jamaican golden-girl craved that third Olympic
gold which would be the icing on the cake, or the star on top of the mountain. While
on the verge of greatness there came great competitors. SFP won all her heats leading up
to the finals, the desire and hunger for that Olympic gold medal was shared by many new
faces, even older athletes within the starting blocks. The silence was deafening as the
world awaited the sound of the gun, sadly Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was defeated by an
injured toe and fellow team-mate Elaine Thompson.
