He’s like our own mini British Invasion,
Palm Springs local, Sean Borg, known
for bringing news on the Who’s Who,
now reveals the fascinating details of
HIS personal journey.
Photos by: David Wallace-Crotty
You might know Sean Borg already. Sean is 48 years old and handsome.
He is sharp and stylish —in a kind of fashion magazine way; not
ridiculously overdressed, or full of bling like he’s trying impress you with
his wealth. No, that is not Sean. His sense of style is way more down to
earth. He’s charming and quite manly. He’s cool. He wears chic slim-fit
colorful clothes with a Palm Springs vibe. He wears trendy sunglasses—a
pair of Gucci shades today. His face is friendly. He is British, of course he
is. And oddly enough, he looks British too, if that makes sense.
From the age of sixteen, his career as a journalist, a producer and TV personality
has seen Sean working professionally with some of the biggest
newspapers and TV channels in the U.S, and his own country England.
In the UK, he worked on TV shows such as ‘The Word’ (his boss was Live
Aid supremo, Bob Geldof). He hosted ‘On The Grapevine’ with British Supermodel
Emma B, and wrote for the country’s biggest tabloid - The Sun.
In the U.S, Sean’s television, online and print accolades include shows
such as hit FOX TV show TMZ on TV, and writing for the New York Post’s
prestigious PageSix.
He contributed to shows such as Entertainment Tonight, Extra, E!, and
Access Hollywood as well as being “International Correspondent” for Hollywood
411, hosted by The Bachelor’s Chris Harrison.
As a publicist, he worked with names such as Paris Hilton, director Marcus
Nispel, Dolores Robinson, Oscar nominee - the late Michael Clarke
Duncan, Ridley Scott/RSA productions, Brit-Award winning pop group
Liberty X and Duran Duran to name a few.
He was well-known in the industry for being up on his game when it came
to knowing what was going on behind the scenes in the lives of some of
the biggest celebrities in world. His skills as a “breaking news” journalist
in London and Los Angeles had Sean reporting on huge stories including
insider information on the deaths of Michael Jackson, Heath Ledger,
The Beckhams, Madonna’s widely publicized tumultuous life and almost
everything “Brangelina!”
In fact, Sean says his phone rang off the hook just recently after Angelina
Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt. Hollywood was calling Sean.
“I grew up never expecting to be anything special. I liked showbiz news,
sure, but I never planned to be in it. It just sort of happened,” Sean tells
me. I’m nodding my head of course, absolutely, because I believe him.
Over the past year, I have personally come to know that Sean has lived in
a stratum surrounded by the who’s who.
Sean says his humor usually peaks when he is nervous about something.
But what could he be nervous of? “You know I’m shy, Juli.” he blurted out.
So, wait... Sean Borg is shy?
We, at LIVE Magazine, have gotten to know him better than most over
the past year. We can tell you this guy, who has rubbed shoulders with
just about every celebrity in Hollywood, IS (believe it or not) shy. He had
to be more than a little encouraged to allow us to feature him on our
cover. We told him it was “good for the team”!
Sean showed up for our in-depth chit-chat at Spencer’s Restaurant in bright
orange Trina Turk shorts, an electric blue T-shirt (he says is from Target)
and with his lovable Japanese Chin dog, Eli in tow (the most well-behaved
dog ever, I might add). Sean’s a real character. “I can’t believe you’ve chosen
me,” he grinned. “Champagne, Champagne for everyone. You’re paying
though!” (He laughs). It turns out he was only joking about the Champagne,
even though I thought it appropriate to have a glass or two. I mean
you can’t interview Sean Borg without a glass of Champagne. Right?!
When our drinks arrived Sean was agape, “I was only joking, Juli.” Apparently,
it’s Sean’s way of channeling his British humor; he was reciting
a line from the famous TV show ‘Little Britain’. He explains his favorite
character is Bubbles DeVere, who shrieks in comedy sketches, “Champagne,
Champagne for everyone!” Who knew? I get it, sort of.
Let’s take a second to refresh you on how we met Sean. One year ago
this month Sean started showing up dressed to the nines at some of
Palm Springs most popular events, which included LIVE Magazine mixers.
He caught the attention of the city’s hierarchy and we wondered just
who he is? And where he came from? We decided to interview him.
Before long we all soon discovered Sean was a well-known entertainment
reporter from London, with a string of impressive credits under his
belt, who was living between the Desert and Los Angeles. He is much
more approachable, and way more modest than you might imagine. He
is tall, very tall in fact. And he continually cracks jokes every other minute
during our interview. This sometimes left me wondering if his jokes
are truly jokes? But they are. His sense of humor is devilishly funny. And
even though he has officially lived the US since 2005, he hasn’t lost any
of that British charisma we American’s just love about folk from ‘across
the pond’. Now it’s Sean’s turn in the spotlight. This is when his nervous
energy rockets into supernova humor.
Fast forward to after our 2015 interview. This is when Sean started
documenting his social life in LIVE Magazine, collaborating with us on
‘Scene by Sean’ - a column now revered by the philanthropic crowd
in the Desert. Or as Sean calls them, “The Pops” – that’s an acronym
Sean coined for ‘The People in Palm Springs’. Sean has also written
many of our featured cover interviews.
Sean exemplifies fashion, style and celebrity, though the British born,
Palm Springs local would be the first to say he would “run a mile” from
anything he isn’t in control of, such as being famous. Which is why, he
says, for a short time he quit showbiz news for a calmer beat.
Nevertheless as ‘Scene by Sean’ reaches its first year in LIVE Magazine, we
felt Sean Borg was an interesting enough candidate to appear on our cover.
So we put him through a barrage of questions and challenges designed to
find out exactly how ‘showbiz’ Sean really is. It turns out he is very showbiz—but
not for all the reasons we thought. Sean’s actually quite bashful…
So LIVE readers, meet the real ‘man on the Scene’ - Sean Borg!
Juli Ragsdale: Tell us how it all started for you, from being a regular
person to becoming a socialite and online news personality.
Sean Borg: I was always a bit showbiz as a young child. I attended a
well-known stage school – The Sylvia Young Theater School in the heart
of London’s Covent Garden. It was surrounded by West End theaters.
Lots of famous people went there. In later years, Amy Winehouse was
a pupil there too. It is still one of the best schools of its kind. I thought
I wanted to be an actor. I was good at it too. But my heart wasn’t in it. I
got job offers, and was even a member of the Actors Union Equity (like
SAG) when I was 14 years old. Equity cards were like gold dust. You
couldn’t work professionally in television, theater or film without one. I
did lead roles on stage in plays written by Nigel Williams - he chose me
personally. I think I was in two of his productions when I was young.
Never once did I get stage fright.
Anyway, cut to me having famous friends at school, and me showing
them how to have a good time. Surprise, surprise.
I remember wanting to meet Duran Duran, Boy George, Wham and
Spandau Ballet – I did too. I met them all. And they all still know me today.
I even gatecrashed Nick Rhodes’ [Duran Duran] wedding reception
held at the Savoy Hotel, in London. Nick [Rhodes] married 80’s Supermodel,
Julie Anne Rhodes, who is still one of my best friends today. She
remembers me at the party very well. I used to always want to go to
nightclubs, and I had appeared on a BBC show called ‘Grange Hill’ – I
wasn’t the star of the show, or anything, but I was in it from time to time.
My friends were the stars of the show and they were very famous and
newsworthy in England. Some of the cast were even flown to the White
House to meet Nancy Reagan. That was big news. Bearing in mind, I
was like 15 years old. I used to go to all the top nightclubs in London
and get the cast of the show on the guest list of every major event in the
city. For example, the opening of the Limelight club, a plethora of A-list
Stringfellows, and Annabel’s events. Actually, Princess Diana and Fergie
the Duchess of York were drinking in the corner one night dressed as
policewomen. At the time, I didn’t even care that it was Diana. But it was
all over the front pages the next day and I was there to witness it.
My famous friends used to go everywhere with me. We would hire
limousines and about ten of us turned up together to George Michael’s
party. We would jump out of this big stretch car looking cool and everyone
wanted to talk to us. We were the ‘It’ kids. Getting drunk with A-list
stars and dancing on tabletops, swigging from champagne bottles.
Hysterical! So, by the time I was 17 years old I was reporting all this
stuff to the national press. My friends who were on TV wanted to be in
the newspapers and so I was the one who arranged for it all to happen.
That’s how I became a journalist, slash PR man. In short!
JR: Wow, that’s an amazing story. Going over your work history, you

seem to have worked with “everybody”. Who and what is the most memorable?
SB: My goodness, where do I start? I think when I landed a job on Britain’s
biggest Friday night entertainment show ‘The Word,’ it was so cool.
Every major movie star and rock band appeared on it. Planet 24, the
company I worked for was owned by Sir Bob Geldof who created Live
Aid, so that alone was pretty awesome. I made so many contacts working
there. I was in charge of the showbiz gossip section (surprise, surprise).
Every week I would unearth a funny video or story from a famous person’s
past and cut it together with a little newsy item basically taking the
piss out of them. It was all very lighthearted. Half the time it was the famous
person secretly giving me the info. My immediate boss, Paul Ross
would say, “how on earth did you come by that information?” and I would
just laugh, as I would never reveal my sources. Rule of thumb!
I have so many fun memories. I even convinced two of the late singer,
Prince’s backup dancers I was hanging out with in the early 90’s to do a
kiss-and-tell interview on the singer to the News the World. It was a massive
story that ran two Sundays in a row. It started in London and ended
in Amsterdam, written by top journalist Annette Witheridge. And I did all
research with Annette. It was a big deal to work with Annette, who today,
is still respected in the industry and top of her game. Such great collaborations!
I was probably only 19 years old. Crazy! Roughly thirty years
on, and Annette and I continue to work together from time to time. That’s
what you call true friendship.
JR: You worked for TMZ. Wow, that must have been exciting. How did
that come about?
SB: Working for TMZ was one of the best jobs I ever had. I loved working
there. At the time though, I didn’t realize what a great gig I’d landed.
Harvey Levin is a great guy, his product was so original and before its
time. I couldn’t get enough of TMZ back then. I remember doing my first
interview with Harvey. He got what I was about. I got him. Harvey is a
Virgo like me, so of course he’s cool (laughs). I was very tabloid, bolshie,
fearless and full of myself. And on top of that, was well-connected. The
Beckhams had just arrived in LA and I was spotted with them at Chateau
Marmont. It was all over Facebook and MySpace. I was hanging out with
Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Mel B, and Robbie Williams posing for selfies
with a regular flash camera way before Kim Kardashian was famous and
iPhones were released. Harvey knew all about me. I bumped into him
one day as I was leaving Crunch gym and I said to him “I want that job.”
Little did I know then, Harvey had already made his decision and I got the
job offer a few weeks later.
During my time at TMZ I had gone through a really bad break up with my
ex-boyfriend of sixteen years. He was a British pop singer in a European
boy band living in London. I managed to keep my personal life very private
when I was working there and couldn’t explain to anyone in the office what
I was going through. I literally went through a major gay divorce with a
well-known pop star and I was working at TMZ – known for being gossip
news central. How funny is that? I was going loopy behind the scenes.
It was a very tough time. But I think Harvey liked my work. He certainly
loved my British accent on the show. That’s for sure. My voice was one
of the main voices for TMZ back then. I still read and watch TMZ today.
Leaving that job was probably the worst decision I have ever made.
JR: In your opinion, how has the media and entertainment/celebrity news
changed since you started?
SB: There’s so much more media out there now. We all have pocketsized
TV studios in our cell phones. People are obsessed with fame
these days and constantly chasing it. Everyone has a voice – his or her
Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook is a powerful tool to promote
news about oneself or others. It seems everyone is a journalist or a host.
I cringe sometimes watching people going LIVE on Facebook. They
might not be good writers, have on-camera experience or credibility, but
they dare to voice their views publicly because they want to be famous.
And there’s always an audience. That’s quite scary. I find it so banal…
They are simply not good at delivering information. They are not trained
or skilled and quite often un-researched. Utterly shameless (laughs). OK,
stop me, I’m going off on one. (laughs). I will now contradict myself by
saying everyone deserves the right to freedom of speech and its OK to
go live on Facebook and say whatever comes to mind... (Mumbles under
his breath) while making a complete idiot of yourself. Full stop!
JR: What inspires you about your line of work and the people you work
with?
SB: I love creating. I love seeing a project come together. And I love
teamwork. I really get off working with a group of people who all share
the same common goal. That’s when it feels good. It’s very hard to find
that these days. So many people hunger for their own spotlight before its
due, grabbing their cell phones to take selfies so they can let the Facebook
world know how brilliant they are, quite often forgetting the most
important word – strategy! I’m all for PR, promo and selfies if they serve
a purpose and it’s part of a strategy. And endgame. I think a lot of people
find it tough to genuinely collaborate through fear of not receiving their
fair share of adulation for their efforts. I’m not like that. I’m not insecure on
that level. I don’t need a pat on the back from the boss to make me feel
good. I think people who have worked with me know that I bring a fresh
approach and new ideas. Hopefully my work speaks for itself. Genuinely
talented people inspire me, not wannabes.
JR: What makes a good PR Man/Publicist?
SB: A Spin Doctor. Someone who can create news. A good PR person can
take something ordinary and make it extraordinary. That’s a real talent.
I have put many “ordinary” people on the front page of newspapers and
magazines around the world, creating the wow-factor for them. Some of
them didn’t even have any talent. I did this for a little known actress back
in the UK, once the media boom started there was no stopping the beast.
Everyday from then on newspapers, magazines and television chat shows
were chasing her (and me) for interviews. It became quite overwhelming
actually. I learned a lot from that experience. I conquered the art of crisis
The LIVE team 2016. Juli Ragsdale, Sean Borg and Levvy Carriker
management. My damage limitation skills were put to the test, as every dark
secret about her life came out. I am happy to say though, she isstill very famous
and respected and we are very good friends. Actually, we laugh about
it all now, in a, ‘can you believe that really happened,’ kind of way.
JR: You mentioned crisis management and damage limitation. Tell us
about that and what it entails.
SB: Actually, I am thinking about giving a few lectures in LA and NY on
modern-day media later in the year or early next. But crisis management
and damage limitation is so important for any PR person to understand.
It’s the key. Things can go wrong at anytime. It’s much tougher these
days to stay in control if your client’s personal life is splashed all over the
news. There are so many publications and websites fighting for “that”
scoop. For example, the breakdown of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s
tumultuous marriage, or Brad and Angelina’s breakup. Not even their
highly trained and experienced, well paid team of experts can stop the
negativity. Once it rolls, it just keeps on rolling. As powerful as she is,
even Hillary Clinton can’t stop the bad press. A good publicist will try to
create a new story in the hope of diverting the public’s attention from the
negative news. Good media relationships are very important to achieve
this. I grew up with a bunch of aspiring writers and journalists and some
of them are now powerful editors. That certainly helps, but not always.
JR: What’s your favorite “famous person” you know or you have met?
SB: OMG, so many. Can I have five? Strangely they are all British, Daniel
Craig, Anna Wintour, Craig Robert Young and two Beckhams, David and
Victoria. I love them. They all have undeniable style. No wait, can I have
six? The ultimate star in the world and another Brit … Elizabeth Taylor! I
had an amazing night with Elizabeth in 1996 at Saul Kerzner and Christina
Estrada’s house in the South of France. We hung out all night together.
Her boat was moored at Saul’s home and Liz had her dogs with her. I
shall never forget it. It was wonderful and I got on really well with her. We
laughed a lot. I made Liz Taylor laugh. True!
JR: Apart from your glamorous life in your “day job” what do you do for
fun?
SB: I like going up to Big Bear Lake and places like that. Picture me in
a cozy cabin watching movies or binging Netflix originals with my dog. I
love lake houses and log fires. Bliss!
JR: You laugh and joke a lot and don’t appear to take yourself too seriously.
People certainly warm up to you. Do you think this is the reason
you have experienced so much and achieved the success you have?
SB: I see people taking themselves so seriously and I want to say, lighten
up! I don’t take myself seriously. That’s my secret. I reckon the minute
they start drinking their own Kool-Aid, people are doomed. Doomed to
fail! It’s like walking the tightrope and looking down... you wobble, then
you fall. Because when you look down fear sets in and you suddenly
don’t believe in yourself. Laugh a little! Have some fun and don’t take
things too seriously. March across that rope and don’t look down. Don’t
be fearful and you won’t wobble. Try it!
JR:You are quite philanthropic. For example, this year you are on the
committee of EQ/CA. Is this a new side of you coming out?
SB: I feel by raising awareness for good causes I am putting good energy
out there in the universe. I’m always telling my famous friends, do something
with your fame. Don’t just be another picture in a magazine, or a
story on a news blog. Use your success for a worthy cause such as raising
awareness for charitable organizations. If you can, raise money, help
people! So that’s what I intend to do. I love teamwork and I love bringing
people together for a better cause.
For example, what Bianca Rae is doing with her foundation is beyond
amazing. She’s only 27 years old and already doing such great things. So
of course being around that energy reminds me of what I can contribute
too, if I put my heart and soul into it. I have thoroughly enjoyed being part
of EQ/CA. It’s a new area for me. So I have introduced people into the
mix that can help.
Another example is my friend, the film producer Margaret Raven. I introduced
Margaret to the EQ/CA committee as I thought she was a good fit
(Margaret is mother to a beautiful 24 year-old transgender daughter). Margaret
joined and continues to work hard and has done wondrous things for
EQ/CA. As I did in the past, Margaret also volunteered and supported City
Councilman Geoff Kors when he was running for Palm Springs city council.
Margaret and I recognized each other’s strengths and we became good
friends as a result. Margaret is incredibly well connected. We know a lot
of the same people in LA. Hollywood’s elite crowd of agents, managers

Margaret for her outstanding work on Hillary’s presidential campaign. I
met Hillary through Margaret. Ms. Clinton even wrote Margaret a personal
note thanking her for all her hard work. Trust me, Hillary isn’t handing
personal notes to any tom, dick and harry! Bringing Margaret to the
Equality California table is an example of one of my strengths. Margaret
continues to work hard and this has made me realize that I can do even
more for charitable organizations. EQ/CA has been a good start for me
and has certainly opened my eyes to possibilities in the future. I enjoy
being part of the nonprofit world and when I get my head around it I could
probably do a whole lot more.
JR: You have worked wonders with putting the Palm Springs scene on
the map with your Scene by Sean column in LIVE Magazine. Why Palm
Springs? The old Hollywood history and glamour?
“There’s so much more
media now out there now.
We all have pocket sized
TV
studios in our cell
phones. People are obsessed
with fame these
days and constantly chasing
it.
I’m all for PR, promo and
selfies if they serve a purpose
and it’s part of a
strategy.”
SB: Everyone in Palm Springs is a star. And yes, of course a lot of that
old Hollywood history and glamour is still present in the city today. It
makes it easier for me to compile an attractive column because there are
many beautiful and talented people here who look great in pictures.
On top of that a lot of locals on the ‘Scene’ crave attention. So I give them
what they want. There’s so much class, style and glamour here. You
could be raising money for charity, running a restaurant, working in real
estate, publishing a magazine or sitting on city council – everyone’s important!
We all give to make Palm Springs a better city. I love being part
of what is putting this city back on the map once again.
I love my work with LIVE Magazine. Scene by Sean is helping bring
people together in a positive way and that makes me feel good. It makes
people feel good. It’s cool. It’s trendy. And Palm Springs didn’t have anything
like it, or like me before. I love that. So I (kind of) came in blowing
my trumpet to an original beat, so to speak.
I was quite chuffed when Steve Henke and Margaret Raven recently labeled
me the “Dominic Dunn of the Desert” – I love that. See, they get it. The
people I’ve met here are wonderful– who knew? I have made so many good
friends here. And through my Facebook page outsiders have seen the Desert
through my eyes and have complimented me on it. They see the glitz and
they want to come here. So I’m guess I’m doing something right.
JR: But you have done this before in other places too, right?
SB: Yes, I’ve had a column in some publication, somewhere in the world
for years. I have always been on the scene in places I’ve lived or
visited. My friends see my column and they just see Sean doing
what Sean always does well. They’re not surprised that I have
come to Palm Springs and created my own social scene, or
joined the existing one here and made it a little more interesting
by splashing a touch of my own color to the mix. It’s normal for
me to know the mayor, or the owners of a top restaurant or to
have coffee with the city manager on a quiet Sunday morning.
My friends in LA, London and NYC are not impressed by that
– they have that too where they live.
JR: So are you living in Palm Springs full-time now?
SB: Most of the time, yes. I still have to go where the work
is though. I’m not quite a “760” yet, I’m still very much a
“310”. Not sure I can ever truly be a “760” person… I’m
nervous. That’s a joke btw. (Laughs). No, seriously, I
have been showbiz editor for the British Weekly Newspaper
for nearly seven years now, but nowadays I don’t
have to be in the office. I file my columns from wherever
I am. My editor, Neil Fletcher, is a friend. He trusts
my work, so that’s comforting. I have considered
various jobs in Palm Springs and even considered
bringing big events here. I might still do that. There
are a few companies in LA and New York who want
me to help set up their businesses here in Palm
Springs. That’s fun–and challenging. Would you
believe I love sitting at a desk and doing a hard
day’s work? It’s very possible I may get involved
with an awards show too. So who knows, there
are many possibilities. I am happy being a part
of this city that’s for sure. And I will continue
to contribute to make Palm Springs a better
place.
JR: How has Palm Springs changed you?
SB: I’m quite pragmatic these days, actually. My
approach is a lot more relaxed. I am not in competition with
anybody, nor will I enter that realm ever again. It’s not fun. And in
doing so, one loses sight of what’s important. My goal is to continue to be
happy and not to compete. That’s my target, so to speak - happiness. I
see so many people wasting so much time feeling insecure about others
success. I don’t do that. Be happy for people when they achieve success.
Competition isn’t healthy in all cases and one should really try to focus on
what makes THEM truly happy. And instead of hanging out in someone
else’s garden, MY advice, for what its worth, is tend to your own garden.
Focus on you. That is where you will find happiness first. Have a little
faith.
SB:Much more of the same stuff really. Writing my columns, developing
a few new ideas in Palm Springs and Los Angeles. I don’t have a master
plan in place, believe it or not. Nor do I need one. I’m just happy when
I’m creating. It isn’t my intention to be famous and revered by all (laughs).
But I would like to develop the careers of those I believe have something
special. I’m always on the lookout for something to peak my interest.
Every now and then that manifests and I end helping someone to get the
attention they deserve. So more of that - definitely. And perhaps a few
on-camera appearances here and there thrown in for good measure. But
we shall see. I enjoy my life and that’s what’s important… It’s been an
adventure thus far, that’s for sure, but my happiness at the end of the day
is the ultimate key!

DESERT DENTAL ALTERNATIVES
Bruno Lemay, DMD
Creating Beautiful Smiles
CHANGING THE FACE OF DENTISTRY IN THE DESERT
With the extensive training he has received over the last 25 years, Dr. Bruno Lemay’s
unique experience has set him apart from any other dental practitioner in the desert.
Dr. Lemay is able to perform every specialized dental treatment right in his office,
making Desert Dental Alternatives one of the only “one stop” general dentistry
offices in the area.
CONVENIENT, AFFORDABLE CARE UNDER ONE ROOF
At Desert Dental Alternatives, there is no need to go from one office to another to
have implants, crowns , surgery or root canals. Dr. Lemay performs all procedures
himself, from the surgical stage of implantology to the restorative stage, saving patients
valuable time and money. Having all dental work performed by one dentist in
the same office provides the patient with added peace of mind and confidence that
their care is being expertly handled from start to finish and much less hassle to have
to drive from one office to the other.
One of the reasons Desert Dental Alternatives is so unique is that there are very few
dentists in California performing implant dentistry with the high success rates Dr.
Lemay is known for. In most practices, the patient is referred to see a specialist who
places the implants and then returns to the referring office for the restorative dentist
to place the prosthetic part.
Most patients do not enjoy visiting the dentist, or do not have the time for long,
drawn out appointments. That’s why it’s important to pick a dentist with a gentle
touch and exceptional skill, who can give you the best results in the fewest number
of visits. Dr. Lemay respects your time and focuses on getting you out of the chair
with the best quality treatment so you can get back to the activities you enjoy. And,
at Desert Dental Alternatives, you can feel confident that you are getting the best
possible care at a price that fits your budget.
so many insurance providers is because we have developed a
very efficient top-quality team over the last 15 years. We pride
ourselves on working smarter, not harder to get your dental work
done efficiently.”
“Being able to work with PPO insurance is important for our clients so they can use
the benefits they pay for,” says Dr. Lemay. “The reason why we are able to work with
LEADING-EDGE ALTERNATIVES FOR THE HIGHEST CALIBER CARE
Because of Dr. Lemay’s involvement in all stage of implantology,
root canal therapy and dental surgery, it was essential for his
practice to offer the most advanced technology in terms of diagnostic
scanners. Desert Dental Alternatives is the only general
dentistry office in the desert with a 3-D Cat-Scan machine. Dr.
Lemay’s patients benefit from this technology without having to
go to another facility or hospital, or pay excessive fees for this
type of X-ray. The 3-D image allows Dr. Lemay to provide the best
service to his patients quickly and efficiently, at a fraction of the
price they would have to pay for a Cat-Scan elsewhere.
“Since I have been working with the CT scanner, I wonder how
I was able to work without it, and how any other dentists can
perform the best treatment possible without this amazing tool,”
he says.
The name of Dr. Lemay’s practice, Desert Dental Alternatives really
says it all. Dr. Lemay and his staff pride themselves on never
pushing patients towards a unique treatment because it’s all they
offer. Instead, patients are educated on all the various treatment
options regardless of the cost, so they can make an informed
decision. For example, standard implants are often a good solution,
but there are also cases where patients could benefit from
mini-implants. Since Dr. Lemay is the only dentist in the desert
successfully performing both techniques for over two decades,
there is no other place to learn about both options during the
same visit.
Caroline Feraday
Britain’s Answer to
Amy Schumer
Exclusive by Levvy Carriker
Stand-up comedy and serious news journalism might seem unlikely
bed-fellows but for British comic Caroline Feraday they go hand in
hand. ‘I’ve been a story-teller for as long as I can remember. It’s just about different
reactions’.
35
The television and radio personality from London has been wowing audiences in Los
Angeles for three years after moving to the City full time from her native UK.
Although she had her own network shows in the UK and appeared at Edinburgh
festival, and was selected for the World Series of Comedy in Las Vegas – which
is America’s 101 top stand-up comics competing — but Caroline says that doing
stand-up in California came about almost by accident.
‘I was used to being on air every day, and I think it’s like a muscle. You’ve got
to keep it moving otherwise it gets harder if you haven’t used it for a while. So
I did a small comedy gig in LA when I first moved over, really just to keep my
hand in with performing. There was a producer in the audience who chased me off
the stage and took me under her wing. My third gig in Los Angeles was the Comedy
Store on Sunset Boulevard. It was a dream come true. I used to come over from the UK
to cover the Oscars for UK broadcasters and imagine what it might be like to be on stage
there one day. And now I’ve played every room!’
Levvy Carriker: So you were a journalist in the UK?
Caroline Feraday: ‘Yes. I trained as a journalist and won an award from Prince Philip for journalism.
But I always DJ-ed and was obsessed with radio, and so although I joined my first radio station
as a reporter, they also gave me my own shows and I was DJ-ing the dance shows and chart
shows and then doing a lot of the speech content. Prince Philip told me that he didn’t know how I
keep up with everything I do! He was very charming’.
LC: And what’s this about being the opening act for the Spice Girls?
CF: ‘Yes, I was their support act at Wembley. Do you call that opening act here? It was an incredible
experience. I was about 19-years-old and playing this huge arena. I also MC’d massive gigs in Hyde
Park in London in front of 100,000 people. I remember being a little bit drunk and having one arm around
Lionel Ritchie and the other holding on some bright pink cowboy hat when I was about 20-years-old — on
the stage in front of a crowd you couldn’t see the back of — and singing ‘A Little Help From MY Friends’ with
him. It seemed perfectly reasonable at the time!’
LC:What do you talk about in your comedy show?
CF: Being a Brit in Los Angeles is endlessly chaotic and puzzling – I’m such a fish out of water here. So I’m
pretty self-deprecating about that experience and just have a good time with the audience. It’s mostly observational.
People say I’m a bit like a British Amy Schumer, which is very flattering indeed. I used to put a lot of
pressure on myself about doing stand-up, although people always told me to do it I thought it would be terrifying.
Now I say to stand-up friends of mine, “why didn’t you tell me before that it’s so much fun?” I just enjoy
making people laugh. I’d be doing the same if I wasn’t on stage, but it’s considered more acceptable to show
off like that if there’s a microphone in your hand.’
LC: What made you move from London to Los Angeles?
CF: Have you ever seen the weather in London? Also, I love narcissists and wanted to be completely surrounded
by them. Seriously, I was coming over here for years covering the awards ceremonies and was the
LA correspondent for Breakfast television for a stint, and fell in love with it and made good friends here.
I would come over to Palm Springs on vacation even when I lived in London. I remember the first time
I came to Palm Springs I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was, there’s something so magical about the
light and the mountains. And this lovely lady asked me to look after her purse while she went to use the
bathroom. I’m from London, you don’t ever take
your hand off your purse as it would get stolen —
much less leave it in the care of a total stranger
— and so I was totally hooked on what a lovely
quality of life it is. I am such a workaholic that I
wanted to move here when the timing was right
and I would be super busy. Then I wrote a book
which got bought and turned into a screenplay
so that was a helpful nudge, but I also felt like
I’d been lucky enough to achieve a lot of what
I wanted to in London so I was ready for some
new and fresh horizons.
main theme on the show.
Up” was released in September 2014 and debuted at #9 on
the NY Times Best Seller List. Her first book titled “There’s
