more information enroll in Copperfieldbuzzclub.Nextdoor.com. Sgt. Adam
Lightfoot puts out important information on various laws and issues.
needed on some homes. We would like to think you care and are proud
about your neighborhood. Get a copy of the deed restrictions if you do not
have one by going into the Copperfield website, www.copperfield.org and
tag on Copperfield Place Village.
Animals can either come in or out of your yard if boards are missing on to
the street or green belt.
scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays. In the evening, please remove
trashcans from the street after pickup! Put trash out the night before and
not 2-3 days prior to pickup! If you have issues or questions as to why your
trash is not being picked up, contact Debbie @ SCS.
No boats, trailers, commercial trucks or inoperable vehicles are allowed
in driveways or street and are against deed restriction violations! You will
be charged a fee if you have been cited before for the same offense or for
repeated violations. This offense creates emergency vehicles access ability
at times and therefore considered a serious violation.
MIDDLEGATE VILLAGE
(MG) FALL COMMUNITY GARAGE SALE
The Fall Middlegate Village Community Garage Sale will be held on
Saturday, October 15 th , from 7 AM to 3 PM. This is a great opportunity
to clean out your house and get rid of unwanted items before the holiday
season! Please be advised that personal garage sales are not allowed in
Middlegate and that is reason we have community garage sales in the
spring and fall.
(MG) BIRD UPDATE
We have had another successful year in our parks and birds did not nest
during the entire season! We do ask homeowners to please inspect their
trees for old nest and remove them. Also, consider trimming trees in the
fall or winter season to discourage the night herons from nesting again
starting in February 2017. If you have any questions, you can access
(NM) BUILDING YOUR COMMUNITY: INSPIRING WORDS
“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” - Helen Keller and the
power of communication.
(NM) JOIN NEXTDOOR NEIGHBORHOOD
STAY IN TOUCH WITH WHAT’S GOING ON!
You can register at www.nextdoor.com and it only takes a few seconds to get
up to date and checking out what is going on in the neighborhood. You can
sell items, find lost pets, read a weekly share from Sgt. Lightfoot at the Sheriff’s
office and get recommendations. It’s a great way to stay in touch. Join us!
(NM) INTRODUCING THE BOARD AND VOLUNTEERS
We thought it would be a great idea to introduce our residents to Northmead
Village Community Volunteers and Board Members. This month, we would
like to introduce Northmead HOA Board member, Sharon Malkovicz. Sharon
believes in giving back to her community and to her, that includes serving
on the Northmead Board. As a Board member and resident, she feels it is
our responsibility to make sure Northmead maintains its property value and
the most important way to do that, is to make sure our deed restrictions are
enforced and the common areas are maintained.
In addition to serving on the Northmead Board, Sharon has also served on
the Copperfield Crime Watch Committee. Copperfield is extremely lucky to
have a Sargent and 10 deputies working our contract. With 6000 homes plus
the businesses in Copperfield Subdivision, deputies can’t be everywhere, so
they need our help to report suspicious people and vehicles to 713-221-6000.
Sharon said this was definitely one of the most interesting committees she has
served on and encourages residents to visit any upcoming Copperfield Crime
Watch meetings.
(NM) VOLUNTEERS - COME BE A
PART OF OUR AWESOME COMMUNITY!
We would love to have you join the Movie in the Park committee! A planning
meeting will be held soon and the more people that can help, the better the
event will be. We will also be forming a Christmas Decoration Committee so if
you are interested in that, please send in your contact information. What better
way to meet new people and make new friends than to work on the projects that
make our community better? Please contact Joni Davis at jdavisnorthmead@
gmail.com if you can volunteer to help with planning and/or at the events.
Please don’t hesitate to send in your ideas and comments as well.
(NM) WEBSITE
Be sure to check out the Northmead Village website for all the latest news
(NM) NEWSLETTER
We have been hearing great things from residents about the new content of the
be grateful! Remember to be a responsible pet owner
walking your dog in our community, it should always be
MOVIE IN THE PARK
Saturday, Nov. 5 th at 6:30 PM
at the Northmead Park on
Pebble Lake
We are excited to announce that we
will host a Movie in the Park event
for all Northmead residents, so put a
star on your calendar and join us for a
really fun night in the neighborhood.
The committee is working on having food that will be available for purchase as
well as the Kona Ice Truck. Families can also plan an awesome picnic to enjoy
during the movie as well.
We will be announcing the movie on www.nextdoor.com, so keep an eye out
there for that announcement and other information about the event. The
committee has been hard at work in the planning stages and we are having a
lot of fun getting it all organized. If you would like to help or even if you have a
really great idea, please send me an email at jdavisnorthmead@gmail.com or
message me on Nextdoor up to the minute news. We will need people to help
get everything set up that afternoon so come on, get involved and meet your
neighbors. We can’t wait to see you there!
(NM) CRIME WATCH - COPPERFIELD CRIME WATCH
The next three Crime Watch 2016 Meeting Dates are October 18 th , November
15 th and December 20 th at 6:30 PM in the Copperfield Community Center.
Great News! The Harris County Sheriff’s Office has updated our Vacation Watch
Request Form, allowing citizens to complete the necessary information at their
convenience and just by clicking the submit button at the bottom of the page.
The form will automatically route to the appropriate District and be provided to
the officers that patrol that area. All you need to do is visit www.harriscountyso.
org, go to “Services” then “Public Programs” and tap on “Vacation Watch.”
Then, just complete all the necessary information and hit submit. The Harris
County Sheriff’s Office will take care of the rest. While on vacation, should any
of the deputies discover something suspicious, they will contact you. If YOU
see any suspicious persons/activity, call the Sheriff Department immediately
at 713-221-6000. For all emergencies, please call 911.
The majority of all car burglaries in Copperfield had valuables visible in their
car!! Hand Bags, purse, phones, GPS, laptops, are all invitations to criminals.
Do not leave any valuables visible at any time. Even if you are just going to stop
for five minutes to get some coffee or dropping the kids off or going for a quick
work out. Do not leave any valuables visible in your car!
(NM) FOR SCHOOL ZONES AND BUSSES…
SCHOOL IS BACK IN SESSION!
KIDS AND PARENTS ARE WALKING TO SCHOOL!
• When driving in school zones, watch out for student pedestrians.
• Slow down and watch for children congregating near bus stops.
• Look for children who might dart into the street without looking for traffic.
• Know and obey the laws concerning traffic and school buses in Texas.
School Bus Safety - Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is reminding
drivers that it is illegal to pass any school bus that is stopped and operating
a visual signal - either flashing red lights or a stop sign. According to Texas
statute, a driver - traveling in either direction - must stop when approaching
a school bus that is stopped and operating a visual signal. The driver may not
proceed until one of the following occurs: the school bus resumes motion;
the operator is signaled by the bus driver to proceed; or the visual signal is no
longer activated.
community. They are available for reading or download
on the community website, under Documents and Forms,
www.northmeadvillage.org/docs.html. While no one
likes receiving a Deed Restriction notice, it is a necessary
evil to keep the neighborhood in good repair and protect
everyone’s property values. If you receive a letter and
have a question or need additional time to make a repair,
please call Graham Management at 713-334-8000. They are there to help
Our Fall Garage Sale will take place
Saturday, October 1 st with a rainout
date of October 8 th , 7 AM-2 PM…
everything must be picked up by 2 PM.
Please make sure any signs placed out
are also picked up at this time!
(SC) GET READY FOR
NATIONAL NIGHT-OUT OCTOBER 4 TH
We encourage you to get with your block captain of your street to organize
a street party to get to know your neighbors. To register your street (for the
police to visit) please contact the sheriff’s department at 713-759-9454.
(SC) BLOCK CAPTAIN VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We still need street representatives to be block captains. This job is very
easy as you disseminate information passed down to you about what is
going on in the neighborhood. It takes a very small time commitment on
your part and averages out to be about 6 messages per year. This is a major
way we communicate with residents about upcoming events. To become a
block captain or find out whom your block captain is please email Bob at
bjanusai@gmail.com
(SC) WANNA KNOW WHAT IS
GOING ON IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD?
You can register your account with our management company to receive
email’s alerts about upcoming events. Register at www.acmpinc.com and
select “Homeowner Login”, Create Log-in (or sign in), Communication,
Broadcast Message.
(SC) BLOCKING SIDEWALKS
There have been many requests made for people to try to park their vehicles
as high in their driveway as possible as not to block the sidewalks. We have
many people in the neighborhood, which use wheelchairs and walkers,
which makes getting around cars in the sidewalks difficult.
(SC) GET READY TO ROCK THE PARK AGAIN
Our next rock the park concert is scheduled for Saturday, November 5 th , 6-9
PM. Bring your friends, chairs and personal meals and have a picnic in the
park. Music, popcorn and water will be provided!
(SC) ARCHITECTURAL APPLICATIONS
Architectural applications can be submitted online at www.acmpinc.com.
(SC) FACEBOOK
Did you know Southcreek has a Facebook page? Come check us out at
on in the neighborhood.
(SC) SOUTHCREEK BOARD MEETINGS
Southcreek’s Board meetings are normally held on the third Monday of
every month at the Autumn Laurel Pool Meeting Room at 6 PM and are open
to the residents. If you would like to be added to the agenda, please call
ACMP at 281-855-9867 for more information.
(SC) CONTACT INFORMATION
The Southcreek Management Company is ACMP, Inc., 16650 Pine Forest
of the Southcreek HOA, Director Zehler, you can reach him through email:
Dennis.Southcreek@gmail.com.
(SC) TEENS - OPPORTUNITY FOR VOLUNTEER HOURS?
This Will Help Fulfill Your Service Hours
We are in need of volunteers to keep our marquees updated with information.
This would entail changing the letters on both sides of the marquees located
in our parks. If you are in need for volunteer service hours, this is an easy
way to fill your requirements. If interested, please contact Dennis Zehler at
Dennis.Southcreek@gmail.com.
(SC) REPORTING ANY SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY
There are two ways to report suspicious activity. You can use the iWatch
Harris County App. You can also call the Sheriff’s Department nonemergency
number, 713-221-6000.
iWATCH HARRIS COUNTY is a smart phone app designed to work with
Android and iPhones. It allows citizens to report any persons or activities.
Any tips can remain anonymous or citizens have the option to disclose their
identity. Additional information is available at iwatchharriscounty.com.
(SC) PARKS CLOSE AT SUNSET EACH DAY
The Parks in our neighborhood close at dark. The Sheriff Department has
requested that anyone who sees activity in one of our parks after dark,
should report the activity to the Sheriff’s Department. Please call 713-221-
6000 and once the recording starts, press “1.” Inform “dispatch” that you
are reporting a suspicious person or suspicious activity in the Southcreek
Village Park. You may request that the officer stop by your residence after
the incident has been checked out, by letting the dispatch officer know this
when you report the incident.
(SC) STREETLIGHTS OUT?
Please report outages of streetlights to Centerpoint Energy. Get the pole
number, as well as the nearest Street address and call 713-207-2222.
(SC) TRASH & RECYCLING PICKUP
Southcreek trash pickup is on Tuesdays and Fridays. Southcreek has
backdoor pickup. This means that our trashcans may be placed at the back
of our driveway. We do not have to have our trashcans at the curb. Big items
such as yard clippings and tree branches should be placed at the curb.
Our deed restrictions state that all trash, including grass clippings, cannot
be on the curb until 6 PM the night before pickup and your trashcans must
be picked up from the curb by 6 PM, the day of pickup. So… you cannot
have trash on the curb until Monday and Thursday nights until 6 PM and
everything must be removed from the curb by 6 PM on Tuesdays and
Fridays. This includes any bags that contain lawn clippings. If you have a
lawn service, have them place the bags behind your fence and not leave
the clippings on the curb.
Our recycling day is Tuesday. Please have your recycling bin at the curb by
7 AM on Tuesdays. Please pick up your recycling by 6 PM on Tuesdays to
comply with our deed restrictions.
SOUTHDOWN VILLAGE
(SD) COMMITTEE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
If you want to be active in the Southdown Village community, meet your
neighbors, help the community offer great programs and events and ensure
that Southdown continues to be one of the best places in Houston to live, we
want to hear from you! We need volunteers for a variety of committee positions.
Based on your schedule, passion and preferences, we invite you to join one of
the following committees:
Crime Watch - Enhance safety awareness in the community. Take a leadership
role in working with local law enforcement and organizing a crime-prevention
network of block captains for every street in the neighborhood so that residents
may watch out for one another. Investigate the latest ideas and trends in
both property crimes and crimes against persons and how to prevent those
types of crimes in the community and communicating this information to the
NATIONAL NIGHT OUT KUDOS:
Many thanks to our wonderful neighbors who
volunteered to host a “block gathering” for
National Night Out (NNO), which was celebrated
on Tuesday, October 4 th . Also a big thank you to
all the neighbors who gave up their time to participate in a ‘know your neighbor
event.’ At many of the gatherings, sheriff’s deputies stopped by and visited
with the various groups for the purpose of strengthening community bonds
and discussing various crime prevention tips. Westcreek would like a captain
for every block; so if you would like to serve in this rewarding position, please
contact Larry Berger at larry.berger @energytransfer.com. We all want to live in
a safe community!!! So please join our group once a month for less than an hour
to discuss various ways to make Westcreek the safest neighborhood possible.
FROM SERGEANT ADAM LIGHTFOOT - DISTRICT 5 COPPERFIELD PATROL:
Great News! The Harris County Sheriff’s Office has updated our Vacation Watch
Request Form, allowing citizens to complete the necessary information, at
their convenience and just hit the submit button at the bottom of the page. The
form will automatically route to the appropriate District and be provided to the
officers that patrol that area/contract. All you need to do is go to our website at
www.harriscountyso.org, go to “Services” then “Public Programs” and tap on
“Vacation Watch.” Complete all the necessary information and hit submit. We’ll
take care of the rest. While on vacation, should any of our deputies discover
something suspicious, we’ll contact you with the numbers provided.
TRAFFIC COMPLAINTS:
If your area is experiencing frequent incidences of speeders and those who
ignore stop signs, file a traffic complaint by logging onto www.Copperfield.
org, then click on Crime Watch and select the “Deputy Request Form.” Fill
out the form and submit. Numerous complaints about the same street will
focus attention on problem areas. Also at the annual Westcreek Homeowners
Association meeting in May 2016, Sergeant Lightfoot encouraged residents who
have concerns to notify him by email at Adam.lightfoot@sherriff.hctx.net.
And as always if you SEE SOMETHING SUSPICIOUS SAY SOMETHING by calling
the Sheriff Dept.’s non emergency number 713-221-6000 #6 and please program
this number into cell phones. We all can do our part to make Westcreek safe
and secure.
(WC) OCTOBER GARDENING TIPS
LAWN/GARDEN CARE
• Insect Control - apply a fall treatment to eliminate mosquitoes and especially cinch bugs to your lawn and garden
areas now. The heavy rains we received in late July and throughout August really gave the mosquito population help
they didn’t need. Cinch bugs will be problematic this fall following a hot summer now nearly completed.
• If you were not able to treat your outdoor areas for fire ants between 9/28 and 10/3 as announced on the village
marquis, you still have time this month to apply treatments. Getting as many people in the village applying treatment
to control fire ants in tandem will greatly diminish the overall fire ant population.
• For a very effective, fast-acting and 100% organic weed control method, mix 1 gal. Vinegar, 2 cups Epson salt and ¼
cup of Dawn dish soap (blue) in a portable sprayer.
• Avoid aphids on your hibiscus and other foliage in October as the temperatures begin to cool a bit. Utilizing an allnatural
soapy water solution works great and does not damage the plant.
• Fungus Control - As was stated in September, considering the number of rainy days we had back in August, the
fall months will really bring on the ideal conditions for an increase in Brownpatch fungus, especially when evening
temperatures fall below 70 degrees.
1. Cut back irrigation sessions now that it has begun to cool off a bit.
2. Alter your fertilizer in use to limit the amount of nitrogen to only a “slow-release” combination.
3. For treatment, Fertilome liquid systemic, Daconil or a double dose or Terrachlor should help stop any apparent
signs from growing or increasing. A liquid treatment works best once fungus signs are apparent or obvious.
• Flowers - Begonias as well as impatiens will continue to do well in shaded areas as the temperature and lighting is
still ideal. Lantana as well as daisies and some angelonia varieties that promote fall color (yellow and orange) will
also do well in areas with intense sunlight. Vincas will do well in direct sunlight for another month.
• October is the ideal time to lay down Bluebonnet and Indian Paintbrush seed for best results come springtime.
Seedlings need to take root and establish a base in the fall; getting the seeds in the ground before soil temperatures
fall below 70 degrees is imperative to achieve germination. If the seed laid down does not have a chance to germinate
it may do so when temperatures rise in the spring, but fall seeding will usually produce a more robust showing.
• Want to continue to nurture vegetables in the fall? Beans, Cucumber and winter Squash should be sowed now, as
well as Broccoli, Cauliflower and Kale. Ensure your garden soil drains well and add 4 to 6 inches of compost into the
soil, along with 2 pounds of fertilizer per 100 square feet of bedding you plan to work with.
• Fruits/Nuts - If you have Banana, Pecan, Lime, Satsuma, Avocado or Papaya trees, October is harvest time.
• Apply winterizer fertilizer to your lawn now in order to promote healthy and developed root growth in the cooler
months, leading to a thicker lawn come next spring. Apply a 2 in 1 herbicide such as Amaze, Betasan, Dimension,
Barricade or Portrait pre-emergent for grassy weed control.
Remember Halloween brings a flood of treat-seekers to our neighborhood, so be sure that tree limbs, shrubs and
other growth areas near front porches and along sidewalks are properly trimmed to prevent pedestrian accidents.
ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON CATHOLIC SCHOOL
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School has served PreK-8 th grade
in northwest Houston for over 20 years. It’s an exciting time to be
a part of the SEASCS family! This year our middle school students
were inducted into the House System, comprised of four houses
each named for one of the first four councils of the Catholic
Church: Nicea, Ephesus, Chalcedon and Constantinople. The
house system promotes moral, academic and social standards
that allow students to grow in community and faith. Each house
builds rapport with other house members through conversation
and camaraderie. Furthermore, each house functions as a team
in which everyone belongs and participates. The friendly rivalry
builds a healthy community spirit that fosters strong friendships
and promotes faith and fun. Healthy competition is encouraged
and allows our students to discover and apply their gifts in the
areas of mind, body and spirit. Members of each house work
together to compete against the other Houses in the areas of
academics, athletics, school spirit and community service.
CYCHRISTIAN DRUMLINE 2016-2017
Twenty-three talented musicians make
up this year’s drumline including 12 new
members and nine seniors. The group
is once again led by CCS Music Director
Luke Kirkwood and has been busy this
fall with school-wide events, games
and preparation
for competition.
Mr. Kirkwood and
musicians are very
thankful for the
generous donations of additional instruments and the new trailer that allows them to travel
more comfortably to away games and competition. At Blue & White Night 2016, the Warrior
drumline added to the atmosphere by playing at the annual back-to-school event while CCS
parents, students and alumni enjoyed a fun evening of celebration and dedication.
On Friday nights this fall, CCS football fans hear the Warrior drumline adding to the home
field advantage for the football team and creating an exciting atmosphere of school spirit for
the fans. Every time the Warriors score, the drumline celebrates by playing a cadence titled
“Sixteen Tons.” Also, the drumline performs at half-time for every home game. After taking
second place at the TAPPS drumline competition last year, the Warrior drumline will compete
again this year. Due to the growth of the group, they will compete in a higher division, so hard
work lies ahead. However, the Warrior drumline is up for the challenge. Their goal is to always bring glory and
honor to God through their music.
Drumline Roster: Andrew Angaroni, Cade Arnold, Sam Beckmeier, Colby Brennan, Parker Buckley, Adam Carr, Luke
Carroll, Brandon Clarke, Collin Davis, Gavin Duke, Jenna Fox, Matthew Hawkins, Hannah Hurst, Ryan McCreary,
Grayson Leak, Brandon Newell, Travis Poncho, Landon Russell, Ashley Scott, Spencer Shumate, Garrett Velez,
Lindsay Webster and Will Young; Section Leaders: Parker Buckley, Brandon Clarke, Grayson Leak and Lindsay
Webster; Snare Leader: Brandon Clarke.
Monday, August 22 nd for the first day of school of 2016-2017. More than
115,000 students were expected for the third-largest school district in
Texas and 22 nd largest in the United States. The district opened its 11 th
and 1,750-seat competition gymnasium. Its many learning pods include 28
transported to and from school on the transportation department’s bus fleet,
Cypress Park as he kicked off his sixth year as CFISD superintendent.
“Today was another fantastic first day of school in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD,
as students stepped into new and renovated facilities, used state-of-theart
technology and ate nutritious meals while being taught by the finest
educators in Texas,” Dr. Henry said. “Every student in every CFISD zip code
has access to quality universal public education. Opportunity is truly here
COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY
GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL
Copper Creek Meadows Community, along with other Girl Scout Communities in
our area held recruitment events at local elementary schools during the month
of September. We also have a Rally night scheduled for Owens Elementary on
October 4 th at 7 PM.
If you missed one of these events, it is never too late to sign up to become a Girl
Scout. Girl Scouting is open to all girls in kindergarten through grade 12 who are
willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any age and
no previous Scouting experience is required. Don’t forget that older girls whose
busy schedules may not allow for troop activities may join as individually
registered Girl Scouts.
Copper Creek Meadows serves girls in the residence areas for the elementary
schools listed below, as well as the corresponding middle and high schools.
Our elementary schools are: Birkes, Fiest, Hairgrove, Horne, Kirk, Lee, Lieder,
Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Tipps, Wilson, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Texas Christian
School and Christian Life Center. For more information on Copper Creek
Meadows Community, please contact coppercreekmeadowsgirlscouts@gmail.
com. For more information on area recruitment events, please contact Jo Anna
Harris at jharris@sjgs.org. The website for Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council
is www.gssjc.org. Copper Creek Meadows Community is part of San Jacinto
Council’s Region IV, which plans activities especially for our Cadette, Senior and
Ambassador Girl Scouts
Why become a Girl Scout? Girl Scouts builds girls of courage, confidence and
character, who make the world a better place. Girl Scouts also make new
friends, learn new skills and have fun. We have special interest groups in many
different areas, including archery, backpacking, riding, robotics and sailing.
28 October 2016 | Copperfield

There are also several different choirs and the Green Starlettes dance and drill
team, as well as a variety of camping experiences and opportunities. Hope you
can’t wait to be a Girl Scout!
Copper Creek Meadows Community is planning a variety of events and
activities for the coming year, including a Costume Ball, Scoutacular event,
Mother-Daughter craft event and a Powder Puff Derby. We are also looking
forward to the annual Leader/Daughter weekend, STRIDERS (track and field
day) and skating.
We always need adult leaders to help make all of this possible. You don’t have
to be Wonder Woman, Ranger Rick or Martha Stewart. You don’t even have to
have children! You do have to be interested in working with girls, be willing to
spend time with them and accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. A background
check and some training will get you started, but lots more training is available
when you want it. You can find out more on the council website or contact
coppercreekmeadowsgirlscouts@gmail.com. Don’t want to make that kind of
commitment? Do you have a skill you would be willing to share? We would love
to talk to you!
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the
Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping
youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth
develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor
skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
BOO TO YOU FROM OUR CREW
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center
It’s hard to believe that Halloween is just around the corner. One of my
favorite things to do is to carve pumpkins into Jack-o-lanterns. I’ve never
given any thought to why we do that or how this custom started until I
began writing this article.
There are many tales about the practice of carving pumpkins. One
comes from Irish folklore. A man named Jack, who was a blacksmith,
didn’t want to go to hell for his many sins so he tricked the devil into
guaranteeing that he wouldn’t. When Jack died, little did he know that
although he was spared from going to hell, he was also denied entrance
into heaven. God did not want him. Legend has it that the devil gave Jack
a burning coal which Jack put into a carved-out turnip to use as light
while he roamed aimlessly somewhere between heaven and hell. Thus
the name Jack-o-lantern was born.
Legends aside, we all love carving pumpkins but isn’t it a shame that
most of them end up in the trash when the holiday is over? Well, this
year, don’t trash them! Feed our wildlife. Please keep in mind that
these suggestions only apply to pumpkins that haven’t been painted or
decorated, which can be toxic to wildlife.
1. Make a bird feeder. Use wooden dowels and strong twine. It’s a good
idea to punch holes in the bottom of the pumpkin to let water drain. You
can also cover the holes you made to make the face so the seed doesn’t
spill out.
2. Save the pumpkin seeds for large birds and small mammals. Let the
seeds dry out and then place them in a shallow bowl or flat tray. If the
seeds aren’t being eaten, mix them with a small amount of black oil
sunflower seeds.
3. You can place small pumpkins around your yard. For larger pumpkins,
cut into smaller pieces. Be sure to place some of the pieces in secluded
areas of your yard.
There is magic in the night when pumpkins glow by moonlight. HAPPY
HALLOWEEN!
5 WAYS TO MINDFULLY HONOR
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
by Paige Davis, a survivor’s blog
For many breast cancer survivors, including myself, the pink
frenzy of October can be a confusing time. On the one hand,
as a survivor, I appreciate this raised awareness and am
grateful for the role it has played in my own healing journey.
The opportunities to get involved and show support are
plentiful. Fashion, beauty, food and design invite us to purchase pink in
the name of breast cancer awareness, but that also makes it confusing.
For the most part, I’m past my cancer bubble. I don’t think about it every day.
And yet, I can’t deny some old habits from that time still kick in. Every now
and then, I’ll wake up on a Thursday thinking it’s chemo day. Occasionally,
I’ll step out of the shower and see the scars on my body and just stare in
wonder: How did this happen? And while it happens much less, I admittedly
still get hit with overwhelming moments of emotion that wash over me at the
most unpredictable times.
Most importantly, I recognize the importance of staying present. It’s this
present-moment awareness that serves as my greatest daily teacher.
And with the pink-hued mania now lighting up October, we all have the
opportunity to infuse our support and awareness with a healthy dose of
mindfulness. Here are a few tips:
1. Be mindful of your body: Early detection is key in any disease, especially
breast cancer. This is an ideal time to schedule a mammogram for yourself
or remind a loved one. You can also commit to performing monthly selfexams,
which is how I found my cancer. Treat your body with personal
mindfulness and attention.
2. Connect with loved ones. Most likely, we all know someone who is going through or
has been through some type of cancer, breast or otherwise. Reach out to that person
and let them know you’re thinking of them. It’s the random texts, calls and social media
messages that mean the world to anyone who has been touched by cancer. If you are
more of a “doer,” offer something more tangible: arrange for a cleaning service; organize
meals; offer rides to appointments; gift cozy items for chemo days; and sending fresh
flowers. My cousins came together and arranged to have weekly flowers delivered
throughout my treatment - that was amazing.
3. Show your support mindfully. There is no question that the big foundations can play
a pivotal role when it comes to cancer research and finding a cure. Consider embracing
causes that support overall women’s health and helping the diseases that don’t receive
the level of awareness and support that breast cancer does.
4. Donate with intention. I’ve also been on the other side of watching loved ones go
through cancer, so I understand the helplessness. I get the desire to take action and do
something - anything. If dyeing your hair pink or buying a designer handbag makes you
feel like you’re helping, then by all means do it. But do the research and understand
where the funds are going and make sure that resonates with you.
5. Practice a “loving kindness meditation.” I’m a big believer that when we meditate,
we are helping to raise the positive vibration of ourselves and those around us. One of
the best tools to do this is to practice a loving kindness meditation. Picture someone
you know who is going through cancer. If you don’t know anyone, imagine someone
who is experiencing any type of struggle. Picture them as you breathe into your heart
center and silently repeat the phrases:
May your body be at ease. May your heart be open. May your mind be boundless. May
you be awakened and free. Repeat these phrases for yourself and then for all beings
in the world. This practice has played a pivotal role in my own journey, as I continue
to reconcile the many gifts, insights and lessons learned from my life both before and
after cancer.
