HEARTHSTONE GARDEN CLUB NEWS
The Hearthstone Garden Club is off to a great start for the 2016-2017 year. The
theme for this year is “Sharing Through the Seasons.” The Hearthstone Garden
Club meets every 3 rd Tuesday, September-May at 7 PM in the ladies locker room
at the Hearthstone Country Club, 7615 Ameswood Drive, Houston, TX 77095.
Guest are welcome along with those interested in joining our club.

The garden club has a great line up of programs for the year with some wonderful
guest speakers. October will feature Carol Fraser and she will present a vitally
important talk about “Invasives in the Garden” and water conservation. Carol is
President of HEAD, a sustainable landscape company, a Master Gardener, Master
Naturalist, Administrator of Cypresswood Water Conservation Garden, President
of Leaf Snap, Member of Butterfly Enthusiasts of SE Texas & National Gardening
Association.
For anyone who is new to the area, the Hearthstone Garden Club is a non-profit
organization under The Houston Federation of Garden Clubs. We are committed
to fostering and encouraging civic beautification, thereby bringing about a closer
community spirit.
Through our fundraisers we are able to award scholarships, as well as support
several worthwhile causes such as the Cypress Assistance Ministries (CAM),
Woodwind Lakes Health & Rehab, the Brookwood Community and area
beautification projects. The Hearthstone Garden Club projects are all funded by
the proceeds from our annual plant sale and annual holiday auction. The Plant
Sale will be held Saturday, November 5 th at the Hearthstone Park parking lot
at the corner of Ameswood Drive & Huffmeister Road. The 38 th Annual Holiday
Auction will be held Saturday, November 19 th at the Hearthstone Country Club.
The auction theme this year is “Vintage Holiday.” SAVE THE DATES!!! Be sure to
mark your calendar to attend our events. There are some great things happening!

Garden Tip: Get your home and yard ready for fall. It is time to cleanup your
yard and plant beds and get your fall plantings started. Make sure to get shrubs
and perennials in the ground in October for the winter cold to set a strong root
system. This is important in getting your new plants established. Do not forget to
water despite the changes in the temperature and weather, our plants need water.
Watering should occur in the morning to allow plants to dry throughout the day
and prevent mold, which can often occur with evening watering. Continue to feed
your plants per schedule and get your lawns ready for the cooler weather.
HEARTHSTONE STREETLIGHTS
The Hearthstone HOA coordinates maintenance of all the streetlights throughout
the community. This includes the “cobra head” lights like you see along many
streets and highways, as well as the decorative light poles along Huffmeister and
in some of the neighborhoods.
Cobra head streetlights need to be reported to CenterPoint, using the pole number,
which is the “address” for the light. It is a six digit number facing the street. You
can report streetlights that are not working or staying on during the day at http://
cnp.centerpointenergy.com/outage (Google streetlight outage) or give us the pole
number and we will do it for you.
Outages or problems with decorative streetlights should be reported to PCMI
at 281-870-0585. Please note the exact intersection or closest address. The
association has a contractor doing a monthly nighttime inspection for lights that
are out, but if you see a problem, please report it, so we can achieve our goal to
keep all the lights on all the time.

CYCHRISTIAN DRUMLINE 2016-2017
Twenty-three talented musicians make up this year’s
drumline including 12 new members and nine seniors.
The group is once again led by CCS Music Director Luke
Kirkwood and has been busy this fall with schoolwide
events, games and preparation for competition.
Mr. Kirkwood and musicians are very thankful for the
generous donations of additional instruments and the
new trailer that allows them to travel
more comfortably to away games
and competition. At Blue & White
Night 2016, the Warrior drumline
added to the atmosphere by playing at the annual back-to-school event while CCS parents, students and alumni
enjoyed a fun evening of celebration and dedication.

On Friday nights this fall, CCS football fans hear the Warrior drumline adding to the home field advantage for
the football team and creating an exciting atmosphere of school spirit for the fans. Every time the Warriors
score, the drumline celebrates by playing a cadence titled “Sixteen Tons.” Also, the drumline performs at
half-time for every home game. After taking second place at the TAPPS drumline competition last year, the
Warrior drumline will compete again this year. Due to the growth of the group, they will compete in a higher
division, so hard work lies ahead. However, the Warrior drumline is up for the challenge. Their goal is to
always bring glory and honor to God through their music.

The Houston Area Woodcarvers Club will hold its 45 th Annual Fall Show, Sale and
Competition on Saturday, October 8, 2016. The annual event will be held at Faith

kind wood carvings, meet the artists and watch the whittling contest.
Carvings are judged on quality of carving and originality. Judging categories
include caricature, realistic, bird, relief and chip carving. Prizes will be awarded
for Best of Show and Best Display Table. There will be an old-fashioned whittling
contest for registered show participants Saturday afternoon at 2 PM. Contestants
have one hour to complete a carving and judged on originality, how well the
subject is depicted and quality. The subject is not known in advance of the contest.

Cuthbert School’s Ninth Annual Touch A Truck. Touch A
Truck is a hands-on event where kids and adults of all ages

from emergency vehicles to construction equipment to really
cool cars! There is a $2 admission fee for children and adults

ST. CUTHBERT EPISCOPAL CHURCH BLOOD DRIVE
St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church will be hosting a Blood Drive on Sunday, October 16 th beginning
at 8:30 AM. A mobile unit will be in the parking lot until 12:30 PM. To donate, you must be a
least 17 years of age, at least 110 lbs. and in good general health. In August we had 20 donors,
some of them first timers. That means 60 lives were saved! It only takes about 15 minutes, so

RESPONSE TEAM TRAINING
Are You Prepared? This free emergency response training will again be offered at Cy-Fair VFD
Station 98 located at 11631 Yearling Drive (off West Rd), Houston, Texas, 77065, starting on Tuesday,
September 13 through November 1, 2016. It is a weekly course, every Tuesday from 6:30 PM to
9:30 PM. There is NO cost to you! A training manual and starter backpack of supplies is also provided.
At completion you will receive an ID badge and certificate. Classes will cover: Disaster Preparedness,
Small Fire Suppression, Basic First Aid and Triage, Light Search and Rescue, Disaster Psychology,
Terrorism Awareness with the final class ending in a Disaster Simulation Drill.
CERT training is designed to prepare you to help yourself, your family and your

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR DREAM DACHSHUND RESCUE
DREAM Dachshund Rescue, Education & Adoption Mission is a Houstonbased
501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing abandoned
Dachshunds and finding new homes for Dachshunds whose owners can no
longer care for them. Our committed volunteers, working closely with local
veterinarians, provide our Dachshunds with quality medical care and loving
foster homes until they are adopted into carefully screened, forever homes.
DREAM is currently looking for caring volunteers to provide temporary
foster care for our many rescued Dachshunds-in-need, currently awaiting
adoption. Prior to their adoption, DREAM continues to pay for all
medical care and monthly heart worm prevention. There is no long-term
commitment required. Food, water, shelter and a soft place to rest is all you
need to provide. The “love” just comes naturally.
If you have a little room in your heart and in your home (and your family pets are
up-to-date on their vaccines and monthly heart worm preventative), then you
are who we are looking for! There is no feeling in the world like the unconditional
love you’ll receive from a rescued Dachshund, plus the friendships you’ll make
when you join the DREAM Team! The more foster homes we have, the more
Dachshunds we can save. Please help save a life and consider fostering today!

PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out
how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month.
Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help
prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long
course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council
for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s
BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses.

Treat the animal like your own and train him/her, if possible.
Although you may feel sadness when your foster animal is adopted, please know
that your efforts helped to prepare the cat or dog for his/her forever home.
