D135 Parents For Education
to use bowling to raise funds

Orland School District 135’s Parents for
Education is hoping it will soon be rolling
in funds.
The PFE is slated to host a back-to-school
fundraiser at Orland Bowl, 8601 W. 159th
St. in Orland Park.
D135 families, friends and community
members are invited to attend the events Oct.
8 and 22.
The first event was held in September,
with more than 100 attendees signed up via
online registration.
Space is still available for the October
Candlelight Bowl dates.
The events start at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are
$30 per person and include four games, shoe
rental and food buffet. Non- bowlers can
enjoy the food buffet for $12 per person. A
basket raffle with donations from various local
businesses and community organizations
and a ‘Split The Pot’ raffle will be featured
during all three events.
The PFE is a non profit group established
to organize parental support and involvement
in D135.
Funds raised during this fundraiser will
help provide a variety of activities and programs
that consider the many aspects of the
educational, social and emotional well-being
of D135 students. Some of the PFE-sponsored
activities and initiatives include author
visits, assemblies, family fun nights, playground
equipment, staff appreciation events
and supplemental educational material.

Arts Commission to try first Poetry Slam

Residents can bring their best imagery and
rhymes to the Village of Orland Park Arts
Commission’s inaugural Poetry Slam, to be
held Saturday, Oct. 15.
Open to poets both young and old, the Poetry
Slam is scheduled to run from 6-9 p.m.
in the exhibit hall of the Village’s Cultural
Center, 14760 S. Park Lane.
The cost is $3 to attend and $5 to participate,
or “spit.”
The Arts Commission is hosting its first
Poetry Slam as a way to explore the many
types of art expression.
Patti Brucki will be the night’s master of
ceremonies. Brucki teaches, runs many poetry
and speech events, and was named Coach
of the Year for coaching various speech and
poetry events.
All poetry content must be PG-13, and prizes
will be awarded to the Top 3 contestants. A
panel of judges are to determine the winners.

Orland Park co-sponsors 38th annual spelling bee
Inter-generational competition
open to all ages

An Orland Park tradition is to returns Oct.
16, when the Village of Orland Park and the
Presbyterian Church in Orland Park co-host the
38th annual Orland Park Open Spelling Bee.
Those ages 8-10 compete at 2 p.m., followed
by age 11 through high school at 2:45
p.m. Adults compete at 3:30 p.m. with the
awards presentation at 4:30 p.m. The competition
is held at the Presbyterian Church,
13401 Wolf Road in Orland Park.
There is no charge to participate; however,
pre-registration is strongly encouraged.
The competition is open to everyone ages 8
through senior citizens.
