D135 Parents For Education<br />
to use bowling to raise funds<br />

Orland School District 135’s Parents for<br />
Education is hoping it will soon be rolling<br />
in funds.<br />
The PFE is slated to host a back-to-school<br />
fundraiser at Orland Bowl, 8601 W. 159th<br />
St. in Orland Park.<br />
D135 families, friends and community<br />
members are invited to attend the events Oct.<br />
8 and 22.<br />
The first event was held in September,<br />
with more than 100 attendees signed up via<br />
online registration.<br />
Space is still available for the October<br />
Candlelight Bowl dates.<br />
The events start at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are<br />
$30 per person and include four games, shoe<br />
rental and food buffet. Non- bowlers can<br />
enjoy the food buffet for $12 per person. A<br />
basket raffle with donations from various local<br />
businesses and community organizations<br />
and a ‘Split The Pot’ raffle will be featured<br />
during all three events.<br />
The PFE is a non profit group established<br />
to organize parental support and involvement<br />
in D135.<br />
Funds raised during this fundraiser will<br />
help provide a variety of activities and programs<br />
that consider the many aspects of the<br />
educational, social and emotional well-being<br />
of D135 students. Some of the PFE-sponsored<br />
activities and initiatives include author<br />
visits, assemblies, family fun nights, playground<br />
equipment, staff appreciation events<br />
and supplemental educational material.<br />

Arts Commission to try first Poetry Slam<br />

Residents can bring their best imagery and<br />
rhymes to the Village of Orland Park Arts<br />
Commission’s inaugural Poetry Slam, to be<br />
held Saturday, Oct. 15.<br />
Open to poets both young and old, the Poetry<br />
Slam is scheduled to run from 6-9 p.m.<br />
in the exhibit hall of the Village’s Cultural<br />
Center, 14760 S. Park Lane.<br />
The cost is $3 to attend and $5 to participate,<br />
or “spit.”<br />
The Arts Commission is hosting its first<br />
Poetry Slam as a way to explore the many<br />
types of art expression.<br />
Patti Brucki will be the night’s master of<br />
ceremonies. Brucki teaches, runs many poetry<br />
and speech events, and was named Coach<br />
of the Year for coaching various speech and<br />
poetry events.<br />
All poetry content must be PG-13, and prizes<br />
will be awarded to the Top 3 contestants. A<br />
panel of judges are to determine the winners.<br />

Inter-generational competition<br />
open to all ages<br />

An Orland Park tradition is to returns Oct.<br />
16, when the Village of Orland Park and the<br />
Presbyterian Church in Orland Park co-host the<br />
38th annual Orland Park Open Spelling Bee.<br />
Those ages 8-10 compete at 2 p.m., followed<br />
by age 11 through high school at 2:45<br />
p.m. Adults compete at 3:30 p.m. with the<br />
awards presentation at 4:30 p.m. The competition<br />
is held at the Presbyterian Church,<br />
13401 Wolf Road in Orland Park.<br />
There is no charge to participate; however,<br />
pre-registration is strongly encouraged.<br />
The competition is open to everyone ages 8<br />
through senior citizens.<br />
