Sandburg falls hard against Homewood-Flossmoor
Vikings shut out
Eagles 48-0

Loss is a part of life, and
when it comes to high school
athletes experiencing it during
a game, that loss can either
break or make the athlete.
Sandburg walked onto
Homewood-Flossmoor’s
field Friday, Sept. 30, knowing
the challenge they were
about to face against an undefeated
team, but the team
stuck together and played
until the bitter end.
On a misty and solemn
night, fans watched as the
two teams went head to
head. As to be expected, one
side was cheering louder
than the other. Devoted Eagles
students and a smattering
of parents’ traveled with
the team to the away game,
and watched as their team
was handed blow after blow.
Homewood-Flossmoor
dominated the game, with a
final score of 48-0.

fourth quarter, but Sandburg
stuck together and played
every minute as a team, despite
the running clock with
11 minutes left in the fourth.
Coach Scott Peters said he
knew going in that this game
would be a challenge, facing
a 5-0 conference powerhouse.
“One thing we preach to
them is continual effort,”
Peters said. “Our kids knew
they had a tall task. They
never gave up, and that’s all
we ask as a coach.”
The Vikings took only 27
seconds to get on the scoreboard,
and started their scoring
assault on Sandburg.

be a problem throughout
the night, with 125 rushing
yards, 105 receiving
yards and three touchdowns.
Wright threw 148 yards of
the team’s total 165. Homewood-Flossmoor
finished
off the night with a whopping
545 rushing yards to
Sandburg’s 38, and as previously
stated 165 passing
yards to Sandburg’s 96.
One of Sandburg’s best
drives came during the third
quarter. The Eagles worked
their way from their own
20-yard line to the Vikings
20-yard line. With a 32-

Parker, the Eagles picked up
a first down. On a 3rd and 10
on the Vikings 44-yard line,
Friedsam threw for an additional
19-yards to connect
with Jaimie Marines for another
first down conversion
on the Vikings 25-yard line.
Parker picked up another
5-yard pass from Friedsam,
but only to be tackled by the
Vikings defensive back Marcell
Ellis at the 20-yard line.
But Vikings’ Khalil’Allah
Bowens ended the Eagles’
drive with a sack on
Friedsam and a turnover on
downs at their own 20-yard
line.
Sandburg started to break
down in the last few minutes
of the game, and a recovered

and we’ll come out fighting
next week too,” Peters said
as he prepares his team to
take on Lincoln-Way East.
The teams shook hands
after the game, as is custom,
and Sandburg walked back
to their locker room with
heads hung low and sweat
on their brows.
“We just have to put this
behind us, focus on [Lincoln-Way]
East, and get
ready for another game.”
said Parker, who continued,
“We’ve got heart, and we’ve
got pride. That’s all it takes
to be a football team.”
Peters added, “We’re back
at 8 a.m. tomorrow, and we’re
back at practice. We’ll start
preparing for [Lincoln-Way
East]. Lincoln-Way East is
another good team, and good
program, and they’re another
good challenge for us, and
just like tonight we’ll come
out fighting.”
