REGIONAL – Calling all
creative people.
The New England Foundation
for the Arts (NEFA) wants
creative types from architects
to playwrights to promote
themselves and their work on
its interactive database, called
NEFA, well known for making
grants to art organizations, has
built the CreativeGround website
to promote the New England
creative economy. The purpose
is to have a one-stop location for
creative individuals and groups
to promote themselves. It is
also designed to give buyers of
the Triton Regional High School
football and soccer teams will
gather at the First Parish Church
Cemetery to help what organizer
Donnie Jarvis refers to as freeing
the headstones from the bush.
of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars,
is asking for other volunteers
and for landscaping tools. He
sports teams have rallied to help
Jarvis, a Triton alumnus, clear the
headstones. About 70 students
cleared the brush around dozens
of headstones last fall.
And they are not alone. It is
becoming a community ritual.
The Link House and Boy Scouts
have also provided volunteer
workers.
Town Clerk Leslie Haley said
last year, “Donnie’s enthusiasm
is contagious.”
Jarvis, who places American
flags on the graves of veterans on
holidays, started cleaning out the
neglected cemetery more than
a year ago, a task that has been
welcomed by the church, which
owns the cemetery, but lacks the
funds to maintain it.
The church, founded in 1635,
pays for mowing, but cannot
afford to hire crews to clear away
the brush and trees that overtakes
the headstones.
Jarvis said he understands.
“Churches don’t have much
money.”
“It makes it so easy to find what
I am looking for whether it is
acrobats or jugglers,” said Kerrie
Bates, director of The Ipswich
ReCreation & Culture.
Her department and the
town’s Office of Planning &
Development is hosting a NEFA
seminar at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct.
Meeting Room C, 25 Green
Street, Ipswich.
Invited are any creative people
on the North Shore.
Bates said it is hard for many
North Shore creative people to
get into Boston to the NEFA
offices. “So we are bringing the
mountain to the people,” she
said.
“CreativeGround is a realtime
online community that
of the person’s life. Assisting
which donates proceeds of its
runs to charity.
“The purpose of the run is to
enjoy the fall colors, educate
and learn about people’s lives,”
Woodworth said.
It is also to raise money to help
restore the cemetery chapel and
iron gates.
The race starts at 10 a.m.
Registration begins at 8 a.m.
Pre-registration is $20, and the
first 125 participants who register
early will get a t-shirt Woodworth
the race is $25 and participants
Oak Hill, on Brown Street off
of State Street, is not the oldest
cemetery in the city. It was
consecrated in 1842 and remains
an active cemetery with plots still
for sale. It is listed on the state
and national registers of historic
places.
Not-affiliated with any church,
Oak Hill is managed as a nonprofit
organization by a board
of directors. Jim Smith is the
director of cemetery operations.
One of the nation’s first rural
garden cemeteries, Oak Hill
was designed to have gardens
reflects the rich range of creative
people and places at work in
the six New England states in
order to promote and connect
them with each other and with
those who know that vibrant
neighborhoods go hand-in-hand
with a vibrant creative sector,” its
website states.
Led by Dee Schneidman,
NEFA’s creative economy
program director, the
workshop will explore ways
that creative people can use
the CreativeGround website
to grow their network online
and access powerful resources
through NEFA’s performing arts
grant programs, including New
England States Touring and New
England Dance Fund.
In addition, discussed will be
how to use CreativeGround to
make a free public profile that
promotes the creative person to
a broad audience. It can also help
find potential collaborators and
Run Through History
and streets to make it easily
accessible.
In the past, families would
come to visit their deceased
relatives, often bringing a picnic
lunch.
“It was a place for the living
as well as the dead,” said
Woodworth, who wears several
hats for the cemetery, including
conducting ancestral research and
tours. She also books events in the
chapel, including three weddings
this year and an Edgar Allen Poethemed
show by Theater in the
Open.
Woodworth, who has raised
$100,000 in grants for the
cemetery, can often be found
here on her knees repairing
broken headstones. She started
work at the cemetery seven years
ago and has restored and repaired
hundreds of headstones.
She is also building a database
of those buried in the cemetery.
She has recorded 3,000 off the
handwritten burial cards and
believes she is a quarter of the
way through the project.
The daughter of Todd
Woodworth, a local historian
and funeral director, Ghlee
Woodworth may be best known
for her historical tours, including
those of the historic cemeteries.
In 2006, having just returned
from years of travel with the
Peace Corps, she took over the
Tiptoe Through the Tombstones
tours that her father had started.
Since she started giving the tours,
she has published her first book,
Tiptoe Through the Tombstones,
Oak Hill Cemetery. It is an
resources in the New England
cultural community.
The creative economy is a
small, but important piece
of the overall New England
economy. It includes dancers,
painters, photographers, writers,
entertainers and designers,
anyone who is engaged in pro.
The database comes at a time
when many believe the creative
workers are threatened by budget
cuts, the internet and an aging
population.
According to the Bureau of
Economic Analysis, the number
of Americans working in this
category has stalled at around
1.4 percent since 2004. And
the compensation per creative
worker has fallen in recent
decades relative to its share of the
workforce.
FUN FAMILY PHOTO DAY
A brand new FREE family event
is coming to Parker River National
Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, October
15th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm (rain
or shine). Called “Fun Family Photo
Day,” the daylong event will feature a
wealth of fun opportunities for both
kids and adults to capture images
of nature and wildlife using digital
cameras (including smart phones!).
Beginning at the refuge visitor center,
event participants will be able to
photograph a variety of live animals up
close and personal (including native
fish through aquarium glass - no easy
task!). Another photo op will involve
taking a “selfie” with Puddles the blue
goose – a human-sized version of the
Refuge System’s official logo. The
scavenger hunt will include a very cool
“This Place is for the Birds!” trail, where
the goal will be to find and photograph
as many hidden birds as possible.
Event participants who then return
to the visitor center to show proof of
having completed the scavenger hunt
will be rewarded with a matted print
of one of their photos, a chance to win
a number of exciting raffle prizes, and
a special certificate. Event participants
should bring a camera with them to
the event. The camera can be of any
type; even a camera – equipped smart
phone will do the trick! Participants
should plan to begin their event
adventure at the refuge visitor center,
which is located at 6 Plum Island
Turnpike in Newburyport. This new
FREE event, which is being held in
Serving Merrimack Valley Area
By now we know that exercise is
good for us. It helps to postpone
aging and keeps us healthier.
Even knowing that, however, not
all of us do what we should. Now
there’s research reported by the
Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention that points fingers at
who isn’t active.
The study collected information
from more than 300,000 adults
over the age of 50. For the sake
of definition, “inactivity” was
not doing any activity outside of
Senior Scene
Too Many of Us are Inactive
daily-living tasks.
Here’s what we now know from
the research:
* More than one-fourth of
adults over age 50 don’t do any
physical activity ... at all. By age
75, that number jumped up to
one-third.
* More women were inactive
than men. The lower the
education, the lower the amount
of activity. The higher the body
mass index (BMI), the lower the
rate of activity.
* Those living in the South were
the most idle, while the West and
Northeast were the most active.
* Having one of seven chronic
diseases increased the numbers of
inactive participants.
* Excuses for inactivity ranged
different approach and may have
done a more thorough evidencebased
evaluation and made
recommendations based on diet,
homecare habits and maybe even
familial history that may have
prevented the decay in the first
place. Dentists have gotten good at
telling patients how they can “fix”
the problem, but need to consider
changing their thinking and get
more training in how to “prevent”
the problems we see today in
dentistry.
There are very few things I
learned in dental school that I
still use today. Many of the basic
principles are used but there is
continuous new data emerging that
we as health care providers need to
expose ourselves to and decide on
what and how to implement for
the benefit of our patients. I hope
to see major advancements in our
approach to oral health care in my
career. There is no reason you can’t
live to 94 and have a great set of
teeth.
Dr. St. Clair maintains a private
dental practice in Rowley and
Newburyport dedicated to healthcentered
family dentistry. If there
from having a limited number of
places to be active to not knowing
how, given their own physical
limitations.
These reasons for not being
active have a ring of truth. If we
live in an area with no sidewalks
and we don’t drive, we won’t be
doing much walking. In some
areas, the sidewalks might not
be safe anyway. However, we
don’t need to walk or run for our
activity. We can do gardening,
watch workout videos at home,
ride a bike around the highschool
track, dance around the
living room, lift hand weights,
take a low-impact fitness class
and much more -- as long as we
do something.
member of the National Institute of Certified College Planners (NICCP)*, will
present a College Planning & Financial Aid workshop at the Rowley Public
Library on Thursday, October 27 from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. This 60-minute
workshop will cover topics that concern parents of students who plan to attend
a college or university, including: • How families of all income levels may be
eligible for financial aid • Which colleges offer the best financial aid packages
• How to avoid costly mistakes on the FAFSA and CSS Profile • How private
universities can cost you less than a state school • How students can potentially
receive more free money and less loans. The workshop is free, reservations are
required and seating is limited. Both parents and students will benefit from this
ROWLEY - This month we’re reading Good omens : the nice and accurate
prophecies of Agnes Nutter, witch by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett,
whose combined sense of humor is something to be enjoyed. Armageddon is
approaching, at least according to the predictions of Agnes Nutter, and she’s
been right so far. But there are some agents on both sides who don’t want that
to happen (because they like life on Earth,) and anyway the Antichrist has been
misplaced. It’s a fast-paced race to the end – or not. Pick up a copy at the Rowley
Library today, then join us for a discussion on Thursday, November 3 at 6:30
p.m. Our book group meets the first Thursday of each month, so check our web
site for future titles. The Rowley Public Library is located at 141 Main Street and
is fully accessible. For more information, call the library at 978-948-2850.
ROWLEY - Through October, Rowley local Joan Petersen will be displaying her
work at the Rowley Public Library. You might remember her from her many
years on the Triton School Board or with the Rowley Housing Authority, or
know her through her current role as the Rowley Town Moderator. Her cross
stitch days began back in the 1970s to pass the time after the kids went to bed
and her husband was at work as a state trooper. She’s now doing counter cross
stitching with no pattern to make a wide variety of items. Her display includes
wedding and baby samplers, items for the home, seasonal decorations, and more.
If you are interested in learning to cross stitch, let us know! We’re trying to put
together a class. The Rowley Public Library is located at 141 Main Street in
Rowley and is fully accessible. For more information, call 978-948-2850.
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Someone from your past
could arrive with welcome news concerning your future.
Meanwhile, avoid taking sides in a workplace confrontation
you might imagine, so be sure of your facts before you act.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A strained relationship
could be restored with more personal contact between the two of you. Letting others act as your
go-between only adds to the ongoing estrangement.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) New facts could mean taking a new path toward a goal you’ve
been hoping to reach. However, be sure all your questions are answered before you undertake to
shift directions.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) This is a good week for all you fine Felines to turn your attention to
some important considerations, such as your health, your job situation and the status of important
relationships.
GRAF RINK Learn to Skate
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Avoid making a quick decision about a matter that needs
more study. Keep your mind open for possibilities, even if they
don’t seem plausible -- at least not yet.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might welcome
the emphasis on openness in relationships that mark this period.
But it’s a good idea to avoid sharing personal secrets with people
you hardly know.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) There are still some
questions that need to be asked and answered before you can feel
confident enough to make a potentially life-changing decision.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Some
lingering effects from a now largely resolved workplace
confrontation could make things difficult for you. Act on this
before it becomes serious.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You feel you’re
finally in control of your own life after months of making
compromises and concessions you never felt comfortable with.
Congratulations.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) No sooner do you
decide to pass on one job offer than another suddenly turns up.
This one might not have everything you’re looking for, but it’s
worth checking out.
