Director’s Message
Term One at Inspiros this year has flown past swiftly with one major event that took place in
March which was participated by the entire school community, including parents. International
Day 2016 themed “Tours & Dances around the world” brought to life 12 different cultures from
countries around the world such as Hawaii, India, Vietnam, Turkey, Egypt, Brazil, China, Mexico,
New Zealand, South Korea, Japan and US, showcased by Years 1 to 10 under the guidance and
direction of their homeroom teachers.
Cultures encompassing religion, social habits, music, architecture, the arts, cuisine and language
were exhibited throughout the primary and secondary classrooms which were transformed
overnight into the different countries showcased for the event. Students also took to the stage
their creative and artistic talents by competing for the best national anthems and cultural dances
represented by their countries. This year’s Best Anthem awards went to Year 2 (India) and Year 8A
(Mexico). Best Cultural Dance went to Year 2 (India) and Year 7A (China). Best Country went to
Year 3 (Vietnam) and Year 8A (Mexico).
On 2nd September, we shall be presenting a play called “Alice 2016”, a theatre adaptation of the
famous novel “Alice in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll. Our Performing Arts department has put a
great deal of effort into the play over the last few months as have the many cast members involved.
The cast members have made great strides in a very short time. Most of them had never acted, sang
or danced in public before or done any form of performing arts. They have learnt not only how to
perform, but also group participation, leadership, perseverance, focus, self-motivation, and selfdiscipline.
They acquired public speaking skills and gained courage and self-confidence that will
stay with them all of their lives. Indeed, they will go down in Inspiros history as the first theatre
production team to stage the school’s inaugural play at KuAsh Theatre. We are truly proud of their
achievements!
On behalf of students who achieved excellent results for October/November 2015 and May/June
2016 IGCSE exams, we wish to thank all their teachers for their wonderful care, teaching and
guidance; and their families for their remarkable support and encouragement. Congratulations to
all these students and keep up the excellent work!
Finally, our final school exams are scheduled for 31st October - 4th November and this term shall
end with Parent Teacher Conference on the 26th November 2016.
Background of Alice in Wonderland &
Lewis Carroll
Lewis Carroll’s children’s classic, Alice in Wonderland, turns 150 in 2015. For a century and a half
it has delighted and puzzled us in equal measure. We have fallen down the rabbit hole with Alice,
taken tea with her and the Mad Hatter, been maddened by the Cheshire Cat and had to convince
the Queen of Hearts that we didn’t steal her tarts!
Alice in Wonderland was first published in 1865 and was inspired by a boat trip that author Lewis
Carroll took with some family friends, the Liddell children, down the River Thames in Oxford.
He told the youngest daughter, Alice, a story as they rowed along and she begged him to write it
down. When he got home that evening he began straight away.
The book, and its sequel Through The Looking Glass and What Alice Found There, have been
translated into at least 65 languages, including Cornish and Latin, and countless film and theatre
adaptations have been made.
Alice in Wonderland is a book that remains as enchanting as ever, no matter how many times we
reread it.
Character Synopsis
Alice - The protagonist of the story. Alice believes that the world
is orderly and stable, and she has an insatiable curiosity about her
surroundings. Wonderland challenges and frustrates her perceptions
of the world.
The White Rabbit - The frantic, harried Wonderland creature that
originally leads Alice to Wonderland. The White Rabbit is figure of
some importance, but he is manic and timid.
The Queen of Hearts - The ruler of Wonderland. The Queen is
severe and domineering, continually screaming for her subjects to be
beheaded.
Synopsis of Alice 2016
Who is Alice?
Alice is a story about you and me and the things we go through in life, the changes and choices
we have to make.
“ Would you tell me please, which way I ought to go from here?... ”
The questions we ask ourselves each day, what we do that keeps us in the same place.
The tale of Alice in Wonderland became one of the best-selling books of all time by Lewis
Carroll and this beloved story is brought to life in a newly commissioned adaptation
and direction by Ms Adel Lina Yap. Delight in the stunning visuals and theatrical
magic as we meet Alice, the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, the
White Rabbit, the Caterpillar, the King of Hearts and
the Queen of Hearts and watch Alice try to make
sense of this world of grown-up nonsense.
A magical, musical experience for
adults and children alike!
The King of Hearts - The co-ruler of Wonderland. The King is
ineffectual and meek as the Queen dominates in all decisions.
The Cheshire Cat - A perpetually grinning cat who appears and
disappears at will. The Cheshire Cat displays a detached, clearheaded
logic and explains Wonderland’s madness to Alice.
The Caterpillar - The Caterpillar sits on a mushroom, smokes a
hookah, and treats Alice with contempt. He directs Alice to the magic
mushroom that allows her to shrink and grow.
The Mad Hatter - A small, impolite hatter whose madness frustrates
Alice as she cannot get anything out of his madness.

Bharatanatyam, to jazz to physical theatre and masks,
to performing and teaching the arts, to reaching out
and working with children from various marginalized
communities through the performing arts as well as
