NEWBORN LIFE SESSIONS
Newborn sessions can conjure up
Pinterest posed babies, swathed in
cheesecloth or cute knit hats,
surrounded by props in a heated
room, with great energy spent to
get the newborn staying asleep.
The results are beautiful but there
is an alternative to the posed, a
more natural sessions that reflects
the intimate moments between
mom & baby.
A Newborn Life Session offer less
stress for moms, no racing out the
door to a studio, no trying to lull a
newborn back to sleep after what
can be an unsettling car ride.
Having your newborn life session
at home is quieter and calmer,
you’re no longer restricted to a
short window of trying to book
your newborn session within the
optimal first 10 days.
3

Reason being, it’s not about trying to pose a
newborn but about the love, the new
relationship that is being developed. No
longer restricted to a short time frame you are
free to book your session within the first three
weeks. That means more time for mom to
recuperate, establish patterns and works for
babies needing a schedule and when partners
have time off from work.
There’s no stressing about how hot or cold the
room is, you are free to move around home,
feeding your newborn on their schedule vs
trying to feed and convincing them stay
asleep to get the posed image.
Another big advantage is the personal touch
that is offered by photographing special
keepsakes and momentos around the home,
integrated into each session. A gifted teddy
bear, new tiny shoes or a special knit blanket
becomes future treasured memories as you
look through your newborn’s album.
A Newborn Sessions at home offers the
unique ability to document your new
relationship in a relaxed enjoyable
atmosphere, what could be better than that for
a new mom!
CHEWABLE GEMS
By Heather Delaney
Photographs by Lorraine Marie
As a busy mom of three I was always searching for an
accessory that was safe for little ones to play with but
was classic and chic enough for me to wear everyday.
With a lot of help from my littles (including product
testing and borrowing their names to use for my product
designs) Chewable Gems was born.
Our Silicone beads are made from 100% non-toxic, lead
free, BPA free, PVC free, mercury and phthalate free
similar to the silicone you will find in soother and bottle
nipples but durable enough to withstand even the most
vigorous chewing.
Most silicone necklaces and soother strings can be
washed using soap and water, bangles and teethers are
top rack dishwasher safe, making even the most drooled
covered piece like new again.
Here at Chewable Gems we try to include a wide
selection of shapes and sizes, to accommodate each
child, in fashion forward colours to match your whole
wardrobe even without a baby in tow.
Our necklaces and soother strings can be used at any
age, whether it is something to keep those little fingers
busy during breastfeeding, a little extra comfort attached
to a soother or teether while out grocery shopping, or
even for your preschooler who just can’t seem to stop
biting their fingers.
BOX
SOCIAL
COMMUNITY CONNECTOR
By Deanne Ferguson
Photographs by Lorraine Marie
My name is Deanne Ferguson and I
created Box Social Event Planning.
When my kids were young babies, I
was overwhelmed by all the choices
parents in Edmonton have. I constantly
saw advertisements for baby and me
classes, sports, music, preschool
options, sleep consultants, and more but
I had no idea if they were a good fit for
my family. What if we signed up for something
and hated it? What if the class
wasn’t described very well and we signed up
for something we weren’t expecting!
Box Social was created to meet that need. A
few years ago we started doing monthly
programs at Kingsway Mall for families.
These programs were designed for parents
and their kids to come to the mall and
experience a new activity each month. We
search for the best groups and businesses in
Edmonton & Area to come out and showcase
their programs for parents. Since then we
have grown and now run monthly programs
at Kingsway Mall, Mill Woods Town Centre,
Sherwood Park Mall, St. Albert Centre and
The Marketplace at Callingwood.
7

These programs are designed for kids, 0-6 years of age and feature a different guest
each month. As a small business owner my goal was to not only create events for
parents to get out of the house, but to also showcase how many amazing local
businesses there are that offer programs and resources for families! With their help
we have managed to put on these events every month and keep them free for
families.
FOUNDATIONS TO
BREAST FEEDING
By Kim Johnstone
Photos by Lorraine Marie
If you’re expecting, now is a great time to start thinking
about breastfeeding! Planning ahead can help you set the
foundation for meeting your breastfeeding goals. Learning
the basics now can also help you understand what you can
expect and how to avoid common problems.
Like writing a birth plan, writing a breastfeeding plan gives
the opportunity to map out how you want to approach
things. Some points to consider include:
Birth: Planning for a low-intervention birth can set the
groundwork for easy early breastfeeding. Avoiding medications
when you’re able to helps ensure baby is alert and
organized during early feeds.
Immediately after birth: Keeping mom and baby together
as much as possible helps get breastfeeding off on the right
foot. You can minimize separation by having baby placed on
mom’s chest immediately after birth and delaying routine
procedures such as weighing and bathing.
Early feeds: Frequent feeds throughout the days and nights
are key to establishing your milk supply. A minimum of 10-
12 feeds per 24 hours is a good rule of thumb. Offer both
breasts at each feed and let baby nurse until he’s satisfied.
Supplies: A few basic supplies are good to have on hand
before baby arrives. Often, a few comfortable
9

(con’t) nursing bras and some nursing pads are all that you’ll need. Some moms like to use nursing
pillows but often pillows you have at home already are sufficient.
Self-care: It’s easy to have high expectations of the early weeks, but plan ahead to ensure your focus will
be on recovery from birth and establishing breastfeeding. Stock up on freezer meals or easy foods, plan
for the absolute minimum for housework, and delay entertaining visitors. This special time where you
and baby are learning about breastfeeding is time you won’t get back!
Resources: Find out who can help you out when you encounter bumps in the road. Connect with your
local Registered Lactation Consultant, and consider booking a prenatal appointment. Look up your
local La Leche League meetings and have a Leader’s phone number on hand. Find some good written
resources such as the book The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding or the website KellyMom.com.
Breastfeeding is a rewarding experience and meeting your personal breastfeeding goals can be easier
with these basic steps. Enjoy your baby and let the happy breastfeeding hormones flow!
Words of Wisdom
Local Doula’s
inspire!
Post pregnancy and life can be a little chaotic, the new mom
reality is starting to sink in, and this newborn has your full
attention. Edmonton’s local doula’s offer their pearls of wisdom
to settling into motherhood.
1
Be gentle on yourself! Pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period is a
huge learning curve and although you may not feel like the expert yet, you
are when it comes to works best for you and your baby.
-Erin
Remember to take care of yourself. You deserve to shower and eat meals and get your
nails done or whatever it is you enjoyed before baby, make the time and do it. It’s ok
to ask someone to watch baby while you nap or to change babies diaper or to fold
your laundry when they come to visit.
The best aphrodisiacs a partner can be is to help
with chores, help with the baby, cooking
for Mom, and babywearing.
Trust your momma instincts! Consider any
advice given to you and then throw it out
the window if it doesn’t resonate with you. Do what
feels right for you, your baby and your family!
