MONEY LOVE POWER SEX
THE DEFINITION : A MAN’S VOICE
MONEY
LOVE
POWER
SEX
Feature Story
of the Month
Depression — described by theNational Institutes of Health as a mood disorder that can affect
a person’s ability to sleep, eat, or function normally, — is an ailment that is massive and
detrimental in the African-American community, and even though it affects both genders, it
serves as an 800-pound gorilla in the room when it comes to Black men.
In this regard, it’s possible that it could be a root cause behind
the disproportionate number of violent crimes, school
expulsions, domestic violence, and ultimately incarcerations in
our communities, cyclically self-perpetuating.
But we also live in communities where Black men are told to be stoic and unexpressive, where being
seen as weak can be lethal, where environmental factors like a simple lack of sunlight or living in a
food desert can cause vitamin deficiencies that contribute to depression, and where proper
therapy for mental health issues can come too late and result in violent consequences, perhaps not
unlike the situation allegedly involving Daniel St. Hubert.
It’s not weak to scream, to express ones self in the face of angst — even in the ‘hood. Hell, that’s
why we came up with hip-hop in the first place. However, you let it out, it’s better to talk
to somebody, whomever that might be: a wife, a best friend, a sibling, even a barber, or bartender.
Because at the end of the day, the other side of “man up”… is “man down.
THE DEFINITION : ENTERTAINMENT
The eight-episode first season explores the black
female experience in an unclichéd and authentic
way. Issa, like many of us, tries to figure out what –
and who – she wants in life, and how to take control
of it. Modern-day black women are usually
portrayed as strong, confident and “flawless.” But
Issa and Molly are definitely not “killing it.” These
best friends must deal with their own real-life flaws
as they attempt to navigate different worlds and
cope with an endless series of uncomfortable
everyday experiences.
Over the course of the season, Issa attempts to figure
out what she wants out of life and how to
This fall, there been more black faces on the small
screen than in recent years. Several shows with lead
black actors and actress from Luke Cage, The Get
Down to the returning shows like Rosewood, Blackish
and Empire.
Insecure is an HBO original comedy series created
by Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore, which is partially
based on Rae's web series Awkward Black Girl.
Rae spoke about the show, saying that the series will
examine "the complexities of 'blackness' and the
reality that you can’t escape being black." Rae also
said, in regards to the potential mainstream reaction
to the series:
We’re just trying to convey that people of color are
relatable. This is not a hood story. This is about
regular people living life.
take control of it, while fumbling her way through this journey. Molly, a corporate attorney who appears to have everything
together professionally, struggles inside as she looks for external ways to fix her life.
Meanwhile, Issa’s boyfriend, Lawrence (Jay Ellis), who has fallen victim to complacency, works to get his own act together.
Frieda (Lisa Joyce), Issa’s overeager white co-worker, whose enthusiasm is both annoying and endearing, is at the crux of
Issa’s racial frustrations at work.
Aside from following the duo’s entertaining lives, the half-hour series also includes a variety of hip music from indie and
well-known artists, as well as touches on social and racial issues that relate to the contemporary black experience.
You can watch Insecure on HBO every Sunday night. You can catch up full episodes on HBO Now and HBO Go

A FATHER'S LAST REQUEST
A husband and wife have four sons. The oldest three are tall with red hair and light skin while the youngest
son is short with black hair and dark eyes.
The father was on his deathbed when he turned to his wife and said, "Honey, before I die, be totally honest
with me: Is our youngest son my child?"
The wife replied, "I swear on everything that's holy that he is your son."
With that, the husband passed away. The wife muttered, "Thank God he didn't ask about the other three."
NunSense
A nun comes to her Mother Superior and asks her to hear a confession.
"Today Father Goodwin told me I had the gates of Heaven between my legs, and that he had the Key to
Heaven. Then opened my gates with his key."
"That bastard!" says Mother Superior. "He told me it was Gabriel's trumpet, and I've been blowing it."
$100 BILL TATTOO
A guy asks for a tattoo of a $100 bill on his penis. Curious, the tattoo artist asks him why he would possibly
want that.
He replies, "Three reasons: I like to play with my money, I like to watch my money grow, and $100 seems to
be the only thing my wife will blow these days."
Unclear Request
A Male patient just recovered successfully from a sex threatening health attack. He was wearing an oxygen
mask over his mouth and nose and laying on hospital bed. An young nurse came to cleanse his body with
sponge. The patient mumbled, “Are my testicles black?” Nurse replied, “I don’t know Sir, I am just setting
you clean” The patient repeated again, “Are my testicles black?” Nurse was quite embarrassed to answer the
question and said “Sir everything should be OK” The patient just kept on asking again and again, “Are my
testicles black?” Nurse could not bear a patient concerned so much. So she raised his gown, moved her hand
to find and grab his penis and testicle, moved it all around, checked very closely and suddenly man
ejaculated on nurse’s hand. The man pulls off his oxygen mask, embarrassed at the fiasco says loudly enough,
“Ma’am, Thanks but I still need to know 'Are my tests results back?’”
Fishing trip
Steve and his buddies were hanging out and planning an upcoming fishing trip. Unfortunately, he had to tell
them that he couldn't go this time because his wife wouldn't let him. After a lot of teasing and name calling,
Steve headed home frustrated. The following week when Steve's buddies arrived at the lake to set up camp,
they were shocked to see Steve. He was already sitting at the campground with a cold beer, swag rolled out,
fishing rod in hand, and a camp fire glowing. "How did you talk your misses into letting you go Steve?" "I didn't
have to," Steve replied. "Yesterday, when I left work, I went home and slumped down in my chair with a beer
to drown my sorrows because I couldn't go fishing. Then the ol' lady Snuck up behind me and covered my eyes
and said, 'Surprise'. When I peeled her hands back, she was standing there in a beautiful see through negligee
and she said, 'Carry me into the bedroom, tie me to the bed and you can do whatever you want,' So, Here I
am!"
First day Salesperson
A young guy from Nebraska moves to Florida and goes to a big "everything under one roof" department store
looking for a job. The Manager says, "Do you have any sales experience?" The kid says, "Yeah. I was a
salesman back in Omaha." Well, the boss liked the kid and gave him the job. "You start tomorrow." I'll come
down after we close and see how you did." His first day on the job was rough, but he got through it. After
the store was locked up, the boss came down. "How many customers bought something from you today? The
kid says, "One". The boss says, "Just one? Our sales people average 20 to 30 customers a day. How much was
the sale for?" The kid says, "$101,237.65 ". The boss says, "$101,237.65? What the heck did you sell?" The kid
says, "First, I sold him a small fish hook. Then I sold him a medium fishhook. Then I sold him a larger fishhook.
Then I sold him a new fishing rod. Then I asked him where he was going fishing and he said down the coast, so
I told him he was going to need a boat, so we went down to the boat department and I sold him a twin engine
Boston Whaler. Then he said he didn't think his Honda Civic would pull it, so I took him down to the
automotive department and sold him that 4x4 Expedition." The boss said, "A guy came in here to buy a fish
hook and you sold him a BOAT and a TRUCK?" The kid said, "No, the guy came in here to buy Tampons for his
wife, and I said, 'Dude, your weekend's shot, you should go fishing.'"
