The Grace Food Bank
The Grace Food Bank Sheffield 8 is being set up to cover Lowedges,
Norton, Batemoor, Jordanthorpe and surrounding areas. ANN LOMAX
tells Impact how this new venture is a community helping a community
What is it?
Members of St Chad’s and other
churches in the area have set up a local
community group which is
collecting donated food and
is about to distribute it to
those in need in Sheffield
We are hoping to be up
and running by Christmas.
This project, and others
like it in Sheffield and
nationwide, is needed
in this time of recession
and unemployment, as
many people struggle to
feed themselves and their
families.
Where does the food
come from?
Food has been coming
in steadily over the past
few months from giving at harvest festivals,
from boxes in community centres and
churches and from direct appeals to
shoppers in one of our local supermarkets.
(Thank you to Asda, Woodseats). Letters
have been delivered to local businesses
and posters are on display in shops.
How will it be decided who gets a food
parcel?
Contacts are being made with Social
Services, doctors, health
visitors, nurses and midwives
– the health care professionals
working in our area. They
know where the needs are.
Who will pack and deliver
the food?
It could be you! More
volunteers are needed to pack
and deliver.
Those already involved are
excited by the way this new
venture is coming together so
well and so quickly.
God is answering
prayer and opening doors.
Premises to store the food
have been given. Shelving was urgently
needed. Shelves were offered, though
not absolutely ideal, but they needed
collecting. An email arrived the following
day from a man in Leeds who had seen a
poster when visiting Sheffield. The email
stated that he was moved to contact us
and really wanted to help. If it was any
use he had a large van and could collect
anything for us! He then went on to say
that his workplace might be throwing away
some shelving and he would try to get hold
of it for us!
admin, food collections, and care teams.
