Mrs Stafford is headteacher at
Abbey Lane Primary School.
We asked her to tell Impact
readers a little about her work and
her school.
I
started teaching in 1993,
working at Dobcroft Junior
School and at Rainbow Forge
Primary before joining Abbey
Lane in 2007. I initially came as
Deputy Head but since September
2009 I have been working as
Headteacher.
Abbey Lane Primary School
is a very large primary school.
We currently have 480 pupils
on roll and we are expecting to
become even bigger over the next
4 academic years, reaching a
maximum of 630 pupils.
Ultimately, as Headteacher, I am
responsible for the smooth running
of the school, the academic
achievement of its pupils and the
management of its staff. Although
I am a teacher with many years’
experience, the emphasis of my
role now is to provide educational
vision and direction rather than
teaching in a classroom. As a
class teacher the focus is primarily
on the children within your own
class, delivering interesting and
engaging lessons and ensuring
that each child achieves their
potential. It is my job now to
lead, motivate and manage the
staff. I set high expectations and
aspirational targets, evaluating
staff performance against them.
As a headteacher one of the
most important aspects of my
job is to ensure that I recruit the
right caliber of teacher for my
pupils. I look for teachers who are
passionate about making a positive
difference to children’s lives and
who will inspire and motivate
them, giving them a lifelong love of
learning.
Another important aspect of my
role is to work alongside other
stakeholders such as parents
and governors. By working in
cooperation with both of these
groups we have a better chance
of providing the best possible
outcomes for the children,
who after all are at the heart
of everything we do. I also try
to develop links with the local
community, including the local
PCSO and the fire brigade. Of
course we have strong ties to St
Chad’s and are very grateful for
their involvement with special
services and assemblies.
Recently we had our Ofsted
inspection, which resulted in
Abbey Lane being graded as a
Good school – no mean feat under
the current framework. We are
very proud of this and it was very
pleasing for all involved to get the
recognition for all the hard work
and dedication that they put in to
making this such a lovely place to
be part of.
