A Vision for the World’s I first saw Abel when he was a shy little five-year-old and, over the last 13 years, I watched him grow into a tall, confident young man – but, sadly, I never actually met him. He is the child I sponsored through World Vision, a wonderful Christian organisation. Each year I received a new photo of him together with a report on his health, his progress in school, his family and his church. Abel always drew me a picture and his message, written in Portuguese which is spoken by the people in Mozambique where he lives, was then translated into English by a teacher. I also received regular updates about what was happening in Abel’s country. Once there was severe flood and an appeal for financial help was made, but more often there was good news of wells being dug with World Vision money or of a bumper harvest due to improved techniques. In return, I told Abel about my life in the UK and sent him pictures of Sheffield and Derbyshire. I wonder what he thought seeing a busy, modern city and how could he imagine snow in the countryside? Twice a year World Vision sent me a card in which to write – for Christmas and for his birthday in July. I was asked to make a donation towards the postage and a gift for Abel which would be bought in Mozambique to help the economy there. Sometimes I could send my own gift as long as it was light and small enough to go in the card’s envelope. What fun I had finding the things! I wonder what he made of the solarpowered calculator, the bumper pack of balloons, and the glove puppet? I have learned so much and been very humbled by my friendship with Abel – I hope that, in some small way, I have enriched his life, too. And the cost to me – just 75p a day! Not much for something priceless. Abel is now working and no longer eligible for sponsorship.
