Rappa was recently voted “Chairman Emeritus” by the Tri-County Regional School Committee in recognition of his decades-long commitment to the district. Mr. Rappa, a member of the School Committee since the building first opened in 1977, announced plans to step down from his post this past spring after 40 years of dedicated service to the students of Tri-County. He was also a member of the Building Committee prior to construction of the school. In a unanimous vote on September 21, the School Committee awarded Mr. Rappa the title of “Chairman Emeritus,” thereby ensuring that he maintains his ties to the school in perpetuity. In October 2015, the School Committee renamed the high school’s main office conference room in honor of Rappa and fellow founding School Committee member Louis E. (Ted) Hoegler, of Walpole. They continue to support Tri-County graduates with the Hoegler Rappa Scholarship Fund. Mr. Rappa has made countless contributions to the Franklin community. He worked as the Town of Franklin’s Treasurer- Collector for many years before moving on to Keefe Insurance Agency, where he worked for 38 years. Mr. Rappa was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Dean Cooperative Bank. Founding School Committee members Robert J. Rappa, of Franklin, and Louis E. November 2016 Local Town Pages www.franklintownnews.com Page 3 GARDEN continued from page 1 place in the Franklin Garden Club last year, when the small group, which averages about 25 members, joined the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts (GCFM). “That’s an exciting step for us, because it allows our members to participate in many different types of workshops, and it gives us an opportunity to learn about speakers for our own programs, which is also very helpful.” Dean explains that the Franklin Garden Club learned of the opportunity from a speaker they hosted. Franklin Garden Club programs take place monthly, on the first Tuesdays, from September through June, excluding January. “We try to plan a special workshop for each month,” says Dean. In October, for example, the group hosted Doug Williams, a botanist from Stony Brook in Norfolk, Mass., who discussed what to plant to attract pollinators. On February 7, the group will present a “Cooking Demonstration with Winter Vegetables,” by Laura Stevens, March 7th’s meeting will discuss “How to Have a Sustainable Enough Garden,” April 4th garden club members will learn about pruning and on May 2nd will be a workshop on herb gardening. June’s meeting will be a field trip to the Blithewold Mansion, known for its beautiful gardens, in Bristol, RI, and June will also feature a tour of members’ gardens and a potluck social. While meetings are usually open to the public, December’s program is the garden club’s annual auction, a fundraiser open to members of the Franklin Garden Club only. The auction raises funds for scholarships the club gives each year to a graduating senior from an area high school who has an interest in studying horticulture or environmental science. Meetings usually take place at the Franklin Senior Center (although this month’s meeting is at the Remington High School cafeteria, because of construction at the senior center.) The Franklin Garden Club has two other major civic activities, says Dean. “We take care of the main garden at the Franklin Common where the memorial is to the soldiers and veterans. We clean it up in fall and spring and plant in the spring, and we water it through September and maintain it through October. We also provide pine tree seedlings to Franklin first graders to celebrate Arbor Day in April.” The Franklin Garden Club, which can be found on Facebook under “Franklin Garden Club - Massachusetts,” is always welcoming to new members. “You don’t have to come to every meeting,” says Dean, “and you don’t have to be a master gardener. We’re all amateurs who enjoy learning about flowers and the environment and enjoy doing what we do. It’s a social group, but it’s also an educational group. It’s a good experience.” Franklin Garden Club annual dues are just $35. To join, come to one of the open monthly meetings, or contact Mary Anne Dean maryannedean@comcast.net.
