Franklin Teens to Hold
Veterans Day Blood Drive
By J.D. O’Gara
Twin Sisters Honored as Gallon Blood Donors
by Boston Children’s Hospital
How long does it take to
donate a whole gallon of
blood? Just ask twin sisters
Giovanna and Olivia Sabini-
Leite, Franklin High School
National Honor Society students
who’ve recently reached
that milestone. The two teens
are organizing their first blood
drive, with the help of the
Franklin Knights of Columbus,
on November 11, from
9 a.m. – 2 p.m., behind the
Benjamin Franklin Classical
Charter School, to benefit Boston
Children’s Hospital. They
hope to encourage other local
teens to consider blood donation,
something teens can do
with parents’ permission, at
age 16.
“Franklin has a huge population
of kids,” says Olivia,
who says the project is part of
Franklin Garden Club
Grows its Network
By J.D. O’Gara
The Franklin Garden Club is
finding it pays to collaborate. On
the first of this month, the group,
along with peer groups Norfolk
and Millis Garden Clubs, will
present public program, “Pots
with Pizzazz” on Tuesday, November
1, at 7 p.m. at the Remington
Middle School located on
628 Washington Street, Franklin.
Working with other garden
clubs, says Mary Anne Dean,
current Franklin Garden Club
co-president with Susan Childers,
has upgraded the level of speakers
and value to the club. “Since
some speakers cost more than
others, sometimes a speaker
for one club would be cost prohibitive,
but for three clubs, you
might be able to afford it when
you cosponsor,” she says.
This month’s presenters will
be Jana Milbocker and Joan
Butler of Holliston-based Enchanted
Gardens, who have presented
programs at the Boston
Tri-County School Committee
Honors Rappa with Emeritus Title
Franklin resident Robert
J. Rappa was recently voted
“Chairman Emeritus” by the
Tri-County Regional School
Committee in recognition of his
decades-long commitment to the
district.
Mr. Rappa, a member of
the School Committee since the
building first opened in 1977, announced
plans to step down from
his post this past spring after 40
years of dedicated service to the
students of Tri-County. He was
also a member of the Building
Committee prior to construction
of the school.
In a unanimous vote on September
21, the School Committee
awarded Mr. Rappa the
title of “Chairman Emeritus,”
thereby ensuring that he maintains
his ties to the school in perpetuity.
In October 2015, the School
Committee renamed the high
school’s main office conference
room in honor of Rappa and fellow
founding School Committee
member Louis E. (Ted) Hoegler,
of Walpole. They continue to
support Tri-County graduates
with the Hoegler Rappa Scholarship
Fund.
Mr. Rappa has made countless
contributions to the Franklin
community. He worked as the
Town of Franklin’s Treasurer-
Collector for many years before
moving on to Keefe Insurance
Agency, where he worked for
38 years. Mr. Rappa was also a
member of the Board of Directors
of the Dean Cooperative
Bank.
Founding School Committee members Robert J. Rappa, of Franklin,
and Louis E. (Ted) Hoegler, of Walpole, pose for photos at a Dedication
Ceremony for the Louis E. Hoegler and Robert J. Rappa Conference
Room in Fall 2015. The School Committee recently awarded Rappa the
title of “Chairman Emeritus” in recognition of his decades of service to
the school district.
place in the Franklin Garden
Club last year, when the small
group, which averages about 25
members, joined the Garden
Club Federation of Massachusetts
(GCFM).
“That’s an exciting step for us,
because it allows our members
to participate in many different
types of workshops, and it gives
us an opportunity to learn about
speakers for our own programs,
which is also very helpful.” Dean
explains that the Franklin Garden
Club learned of the opportunity
from a speaker they hosted.
Franklin Garden Club programs
take place monthly, on the
first Tuesdays, from September
through June, excluding January.
“We try to plan a special
workshop for each month,” says
Dean. In October, for example,
the group hosted Doug Williams,
a botanist from Stony Brook in
Norfolk, Mass., who discussed
what to plant to attract pollinators.
On February 7, the group
will present a “Cooking Demonstration
with Winter Vegetables,”
by Laura Stevens, March
7th’s meeting will discuss “How
to Have a Sustainable Enough
Garden,” April 4th garden club
members will learn about pruning
and on May 2nd will be a
workshop on herb gardening.
June’s meeting will be a field
trip to the Blithewold Mansion,
known for its beautiful gardens,
in Bristol, RI, and June will also
feature a tour of members’ gardens
and a potluck social.
While meetings are usually
open to the public,
December’s program
is the garden
club’s annual auction,
a fundraiser
open to members of
the Franklin Garden
Club only. The auction
raises funds for
scholarships the club
gives each year to a
graduating senior
from an area high
school who has an
interest in studying
horticulture or environmental
science. Meetings
usually take place at the Franklin
Senior Center (although this
month’s meeting is at the Remington
High School cafeteria,
because of construction at the
senior center.)
The Franklin Garden Club
has two other major civic activities,
says Dean.
“We take care of the main
garden at the Franklin Common
where the memorial is to the soldiers
and veterans. We clean it
up in fall and spring and plant
in the spring, and we water it
through September and maintain
it through October. We also
provide pine tree seedlings to
Franklin first graders to celebrate
Arbor Day in April.”
The Franklin Garden Club,
which can be found on Facebook
under “Franklin Garden Club
- Massachusetts,” is always welcoming
to new members.
“You don’t have to come to
every meeting,” says Dean, “and
you don’t have to be a master
gardener. We’re all amateurs who
enjoy learning about flowers and
the environment and enjoy doing
what we do. It’s a social group,
but it’s also an educational group.
It’s a good experience.”
Franklin Garden Club annual
dues are just $35. To join, come
to one of the open monthly meetings,
or contact Mary Anne Dean
maryannedean@comcast.net.
The Franklin Garden Club has expanded its offerings to members by
joining the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts. On the first of
this month, the group has partnered with the Millis and Norfolk
A clever American comedy by
one of the most produced playwrights
of the twentieth century,
The Odd Couple will be presented
at THE BLACK BOX in downtown
Franklin on November 4
and 5 at 7:30 p.m., with a Sunday
matinee on November 6 at
2 p.m. The Odd Couple is an epic
mismatch of personalities, as an
incompatible pair of suddenly
single pals becomes roommates.
Thrown out by his wife, the fastidious
and uptight news writer,
Felix Unger, moves in with the
slovenly sportswriter, Oscar
Madison, recently divorced.
Unsure why their marriages fell
apart, the friends repeat the same
mistakes with each other – with
hysterical results. The Odd Couple
won the 1965 Tony Award for
Best Author of a Play and was
a Best Play nominee. The renowned
buddy tale is the original
play behind the hit TV sitcom
and film.
FPAC’s holiday season begins
on December 3 and 4 with the
company’s annual production of
The Nutcracker. A popular FPAC
holiday tradition for more than
20 years, the world-famous ballet
will be presented at the Franklin
High School auditorium with live
professional orchestra, special
guest artists, and more than 100
area dancers.
FPAC’s original panto follows
in the British tradition, retelling a
well-known fairy tale in an exaggerated
style filled with audience
participation, popular songs,
slapstick comedy, jokes, dances
and more. This production,
based on the story of Cinderella,
will be staged at THE BLACK
BOX on December 10 and 11.
FPAC’s large-cast holiday musical,
Humbug!, will be presented
on December 17 and 18 at the
Franklin High School auditorium.
A family favorite since debuting
as part of the company’s
2008 season, Humbug! is an original
musical retelling of Charles
Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. With
musical hits of every genre
and live accompaniment by a
10-piece band of professional
musicians, Humbug! transports
audiences from Dickensian England
to contemporary America
as the novels iconic characters
and storyline are cleverly reimagined
with modern setting
and dialogue.
can demystify blood donation.
It’s not scary. It doesn’t hurt as
much as you think it will, and the
reward, giving someone else the
opportunity to live – is just very
powerful, knowing you’re doing
this for someone else.”
Olivia and Giovanna thought
of the idea for the blood drive
when they noticed they were the
only ones around their age being
honored by Boston Children’s
Hospital for achieving a gallon
each in blood donation.
was really special because we
heard a donor speak and a recipient
speaking who had a rare disease
where she had to have blood
transfusions frequently.”
“What surprised me and
Giovanna were there were very
few people our age,” says Olivia.
“There were 20- and 30-yearolds,
but nobody as young as us.”
She adds that young, healthy
people have healthy blood to donate.
“We want to foster the idea
of being a lifelong donor,” says
Giovanna.
The two sisters began their
journey as blood donors when
Giovanna, who developed scoliosis
– as had a number of
members of her Mom’s family
– needed a spinal fusion at age
12. Giovanna was encouraged to
self-donate for the process, and
at that time, she found out that
her blood (and her identical twin,
Olivia’s) type was O-negative, the
universal donor.
“Anyone with any type of
blood type can take O-negative,”
says Giovanna, “Although they
always need all kinds of blood.
They prefer to give the same
blood type to the child.”
Once they were both 16, both
twins began donating.
“I guess I just felt like this need
to give back to Children’s Hospital,”
says Olivia. “I just did it as
a way to give back to the hospital
that did so many things for my
family.”
The twins give a whole blood
donation every two months, although
donors can choose different
types of donations, such
as plasma, double red cell and
platelet donation.
When it came to planning a
blood drive of their own, then,
the Sabini-Leite sisters didn’t
hesitate to arrange for Boston
Children’s Hospital’s Blood Mobile
to come to Franklin.
The two sisters are pros at
blood donation at this point.
They have a few words of wisdom
they’ve amassed over their
couple of years of blood donation
that they would like to give
the young people they’re encouraging
to donate.
“You definitely have to
hydrate, so it’s easier,” says
Giovanna. “We take iron,
which is especially important for
women. For Children’s Hospital,
you have to have more than 12.5
grams of iron. They test you before
you go in, so we eat a lot of
beans, spinach and eggs, that all
contain iron.”
“Don’t be afraid,” says Olivia.
“It will hurt when they put
the needle in, I won’t lie, but the
pain is minimal compared to
what you’re doing for someone
points out that nowadays, thanks
to technology, blood donation is
quick and easy. It also helps that
Boston Children’s Hospital staff
are accustomed to being particularly
gentle, working with children,
say the sisters.
“The blood donation is very
quick,” says Olivia. “The actual
process of donating takes about
seven minutes.”
“There’s no substitute for
blood. It can’t be made in a
lab,” says Giovanna. “For a person
who needs blood, they need
somebody else.”
Going Above and Beyond
Former Norfolk Children’s School Director
Opens New Preschool in Franklin
By Grace Allen
They say that when a door
closes, a window opens. After the
Norfolk Children’s School (NCS)
shut its doors this past June, director
and teacher Deb Holmes
decided it was the perfect opportunity
to start her own preschool.
Above and Beyond Preschool
Center, LLC opened recently in
Holmes’ house in Franklin, right
on the Norfolk line. Fully licensed
by the state, the school will build
on the philosophies of the Norfolk
Children’s School, where
Holmes taught for over 20 years.
“It’s always been a dream of
mine to own a business,” said
Holmes, who plans to cater
to the individual needs of the
families and children enrolling
in her school. As a home-based
preschool, flexibility will be the
hallmark of Above and Beyond,
added Holmes.
With both Early Bird and
Night Owl enrollment options,
the school’s extended day will
allow Holmes to offer enrichment
activities beyond her
preschool curriculum. The enrichments
themes will be driven
by the children’s interests, noted
Holmes.
“My objective is to offer ‘opportunities’
for learning so that
the children will be excited about
making discoveries on their own,
and therefore instill a love of
learning.”
In addition to the indoor
classroom, the preschool offers
a large outdoor space for exploration
and nature-based activities.
Holmes also plans to invite
special guests, like storytellers,
nutritionists, and musicians, to
support and augment her curriculum.
Holmes, a classically-trained
musician, opera singer, and piano
teacher, has always enjoyed working
with young children. When
her own child was a student at
the Norfolk Children’s School,
Holmes would often volunteer
in the classroom. Pam Mele, the
owner and director of NCS from
1989 to 1996, suggested Holmes
would make a great preschool
teacher. Holmes eventually returned
to school for certification
saute & GRill
RestauRant
Deb Holmes, owner and director of Above and Beyond Preschool
Center.
in early education.
Mele, currently an adjunct
faculty member in Dean College’s
Department of Early
Childhood Studies and the 2013
recipient of the Dean College
Excellence in Teaching Award,
said Holmes “has put a great
deal of thought and experience
behind her philosophy of teaching
practice, curriculum, and the
physical environment of her preschool.”
She added, “Deb has an intuitive
and educated knowledge of
child development. Her strengths
are her warmth, her non-judgmental
attitude, and a sincere
desire to support children and
families.”
Holmes still hears from former
NCS students, who share
how their preschool experience
shaped the young adults they are
today. The opportunity for children
to explore, experiment, and
create at their own pace is key to
a successful early childhood education,
believes Holmes.
“You can reach them at that
age,” observed Holmes. “You
can make the difference.”
8 Estate Planning Mistakes to Avoid
Estate planning can be complicated,
and it’s not uncommon
for people to make mistakes with
their plans. But financial advisors
make errors, too, so here are the
most common mistakes I have
encountered from other financial
and estate planners.
1. Improper beneficiary
designations
I frequently see advisors improperly
completing beneficiary
designations. Examples: not
changing the beneficiary due to
divorce or a death, or listing a
special needs child or grandchild
directly as a beneficiary, rather
than a trust FBO (for benefit of),
thereby affecting their eligibility
for Social Security disability benefits.
2. Not changing asset
titles to trusts
Incorporating revocable living
Get your hair
Holiday ready
• No Appointments Necessary
• Open 7 Days a Week
• Costcutters.com
trusts into a client’s estate plan
but forgetting to update all the
account titling to the name of the
trust. Not changing titles creates
problems that include having to
pay additional probate costs, losing
the private nature of settling
the estate, etc.
3. Incorrectly assuming
clients’ goals
Many advisors assume a client’s
main goal is to save estate
taxes, for example. However,
when really connecting with a client,
we might find that taxes are
only a small aspect of their objectives.
Sometimes, in listening
to the client, we realize that their
fears are more about their heirs’
ability to manage the inheritance
as well as decisions such as trustees,
etc.
4. Naming minor children
as account beneficiaries
Letting clients name minor
children outright as primary or
contingent beneficiaries of life
insurance or retirement plans.
When minor children inherit, a
court must appoint a guardian
who must be bonded and must
file a laborious annual accounting
with the local court.
5. Wrong choice of executors
and trustees
Naming a financial institution
as successor executor/trustee
after surviving spouse or instead
of surviving spouse. In some
cases, this is to the detriment of
the spouse and other beneficiaries
because large institutions
usually follow their fiduciary
responsibilities with a less personable
approach than another
trustee could provide.
6. Failure to address
medical directives
Many attorneys will draft a
health-care power of attorney
(POA) and living will. If the two
documents co-exist, they may
conflict since the POA allows another
to make decisions while the
living will already states what is
to be done. Absent statutory (or
document) direction, health-care
providers may experience a conflict
in what to do.
7. Ignoring state estate
and inheritance taxes
Many states follow the federal
$5 million-plus exemption
for taxable estates, but the states
do not always exempt this larger
amount. For example, in Massachusetts,
estates over $1,000,000
that are not left to the surviving
spouse are subject to a Massachusetts
estate tax.
8. Failure to address asset
protection
Most couples fear losing their
assets to nursing homes. For couples
nearing retirement, strategies
that protect assets should
be explored. Strategies include
lifetime credit shelter trusts, life
estate deeds, gifting and other
techniques that make assets available
for use but beyond the reach
of creditors. We have a great
FREE guide entitled “Planning
Your Estate.” Please feel free to
Downtown Partnership to Celebrate 15 Years with Gala
Nov 12
What better way to celebrate
15 years of events, accomplishments
and service to Franklin
residents and businesses than
with a big party? That’s what the
Franklin Downtown Partnership
thinks, too!
Join the FDP and friends at its
anniversary fundraiser gala on
Saturday, November 12, at THE
BLACK BOX for an evening of
fine food, fundraising and music.
Doors open at 6 p.m. and there
will be a cash bar. Attire is “cocktail
party.”
“With our 15th Anniversary
Gala we are first celebrating the
accomplishment of many of the
goals we started with 15 years
ago. Secondly, we are recognizing
how the FDP has taken on a
new shape through the new vision
created by a growing body
of members who care about the
downtown. Thirdly, we are acknowledging
that no change occurs
without the hard work and
dedication of many volunteers,”
says Jane Curran, owner of Jane’s
Frames, founding member of the
FDP and gala co-organizer.
“Our Gala gives everyone
who has been involved in the
downtown revitalization projects
over the past 15 years a chance
to celebrate together and to look
forward to the next chapter in
our town,” adds Nicole Fortier,
Partnership president.
The party will be about and
The Man in Black
Johnny Cash Tribute
by some of the best Franklin has
to offer. Bob Ward, Franklin resident
and FOX25 news reporter,
will emcee the festivities. Enjoy
music by local band Ben Gardner’s
Boat, featuring attorney
and state representative Jeff Roy
on guitar. Restaurant 3 will cater
delicious hearty appetizers and a
pasta station, and gala guests will
bid on exciting auction and raffle
items and baskets of goodies donated
by local merchants.
Tickets are on sale now for
$100 each. There are two ways to
purchase tickets: online at www.
fdp15thanniversaryceleb.eventbrite.com
(includes a $5.99/
ticket service fee) or in person at
Jane’s Frames. Tickets are sold
on a first-come/first-serve basis.
Proceeds from ticket sales,
auction and raffle items, and
sponsorships will help financially
support the Partnership’s future
efforts as a voice of downtown
Franklin and operation of its
events. Dean Bank is a Platinum
sponsor of this event.
Attending the gala gives guests
a good way to connect with the
community at large, along with
business leaders, town staff and
government officials. It’s also
an opportunity to see the FDP’s
impact on the revitalization of
Franklin’s downtown, according
to co-organizer Beth Wierling.
“Every time I walk and drive
through downtown I see the
results of community involvement.
I live downtown and I
want the area to be the place to
go to shop, eat and do errands.
Being a member of the Franklin
Downtown Partnership enables
me to have a voice and truly help
revitalize Franklin’s already great
downtown,” says Wierling.
In 2001, eight business owners
and residents who were interested
in revitalizing the town’s
downtown center created the
non-profit Franklin Downtown
Partnership. By 2015 the organization
had grown to nearly 200
member businesses, groups and
residents, many of whom have
been members for more than 10
years.
The Partnership is well known
for creating and running the
popular Harvest Stroll, Holiday
Stroll and Strawberry Stroll
events. It’s also had a hand in at
least 25 projects over the past 15
years, including new buildings
on East Central and Summer
streets, greenspace installations,
downtown gateway signs, and
creation of a statue in front of the
Historical Museum. The group
was heavily involved in planning
the recently completed Downtown
Streetscape and Roadway
Improvement project.
“I’m most proud of the
changes in our downtown as
older buildings have been replaced
or restored, building owners
have taken a new pride in
their property, and many traffic
issues have been solved,” says
Curran. “Our downtown has become
a welcoming, vibrant community
that we can all be proud
of.”
The race, open to runners and
for the entire family to
their traditional Thanksgiving
feast. And, there’s the added
benefit of helping to relieve hunger
in the community.
turnout for the Franklin race,”
said Erin Lynch, executive director
for the Franklin Food Pantry.
“Thanksgiving is a time for everyone
to truly appreciate what
they have, but also an occasion
to think of others who are struggling
to put food on their tables.
The Turkey Trot rallies our community
to give back and help
protect others from the threat of
hunger. We, and the 504 households
we serve, are grateful to
our community for coming out
to support us.”
Franklin Fire Fighters Fill the
Boot to Raise
Critical Funds for Local MDA Families
Members of the Franklin Fire Fighters Local
2637 of the Professional Fire Fighters Association,
together with the Muscular Dystrophy Association
raised almost $10,000 in the annual Fill the
Boot fundraising campaign to help free kids and
adults from the harm of muscular dystrophy, ALS
and related diseases that severely weaken muscle
strength and mobility. We are immensely grateful
for all of our current and past supporters, sponsors
and partners. Their impact will make it possible
for MDA to double our research investment, help
50,000 more families and send 20,000 kids to camp
for free by 2020.
The Fill the Boot program started in Boston
over 60 years ago. For more than six decades, fire
fighters have stood on the front lines to fuel MDA’s
mission to free individuals — and the families who
love them — from the harm of muscular dystrophy
and other related life-threatening diseases that take
away people’s ability to walk, move, smile, talk and
even breathe.
Funds raised through 2016 Franklin Fill the
Boot drives empower families with life-enhancing
resources and support, including state-of-the-art
support groups and Care Centers, including the
Enjoying a Guilt-Free Holiday Dinner
Adhering to a diet on special
occasions has always proved challenging
for Roy DeGrandpre.
He was enthused when he joined
New England Fat Loss (NEFL)
on October 1, 2015. However,
Thanksgiving Day loomed in the
near future. When the big day
arrived, the 54 year-old had already
lost 43 pounds and gratefully
approached the event with
a totally new outlook.
“In the past, every time I’ve
dieted, I’ve dreaded the holidays,”
DeGrandpre said. “The
holidays are about great family,
great food and letting go, but this
year was completely different.
When I woke up on Thanksgiving,
I told myself I was not going
to go overboard, but if I saw
something I wanted, I was going
to try it and enjoy every bite.”
Armed with a successful diet
plan and a personal nutritional
menu from NEFL, DeGrandpre
allowed himself to enjoy a truly
satisfying Thanksgiving knowing
he had a clear direction for the
day after.
“The difference this time was
that I had full and complete confidence
that starting the next day,
I could just follow the program
again and very shortly, I would
be right back to my Thanksgiving
morning weight,” DeGrandpre
said. “There was absolutely no
doubt in my mind that I would
accomplish that. It took me only
two days.”
At press time, DeGrandpre
had lost an impressive 54 pounds
just six weeks into the program.
In addition to the weight loss he
was also experiencing other physical
benefits. For example, now
carrying a lot less weight, he only
requires 20 percent of his original
insulin dosage to manage his
diabetes. He also is experiencing
quite an increase in stamina.
“I have more energy than I
feel I have had in years, as far
back as I can remember,” De-
Grandpre said. “A lot of that is
because even when I was thinner
and younger, I still wasn’t eating
healthy. Anyone who is diabetic
should be calling right away because
your energy and health will
benefit greatly.”
DeGrandpre did all the work,
but also credits the support and
guidance from the NEFL staff.
The hour’s commute to the Newton
office from his Amherst, NH
home required additional commitment,
but the effort was well
worth the result. His personal
interaction with the staff who he
described as available, encouraging,
friendly and knowledgeable,
and with Dr. Johns who he would
text with daily, made him feel like
his weight loss was a successful
team effort!
The Gravestone Girls
Thursday, November 17, 6:30
p.m., Join us for a fascinating
presentation by the Gravestone
Girls about New England cemetery
art, history and symbolism.
The ‘virtual tour’, called “Welcome
to The Graveyard”, takes
us from colonial burial grounds,
through the rural cemetery
movement of the 19th century
and into 21st century locations.
It examines why we have cemeteries
and gravestones, why they
look like they do and how styles
and art have evolved over almost
400 years. Prior to the program
date, The Girls will hit the road
and go through Franklin’s cemeteries,
taking pictures to discuss
during the presentation. Q&A is
welcome at the end of the show!
Flashes and Floaters
By: Roger M. Kaldawy, M.D.,
Milford Franklin Eye Center
Many patients will be aware
of small flying “black spots” in
the field of vision in one or both
eyes. These are called floaters
and may be associated with
flashes of light. Flashes and floaters
may have serious implications
on the vision.
What are floaters?
Floaters are small black shadows
in the vision of one or both
eyes, especially when looking at a
specific surface like a white page,
a bright sky or perhaps when
walking on the beach. These
black spots are impurities in the
fluid that fills the back cavity of
the eye. This jelly fluid is called
the “vitreous” and has a consistency
similar to “egg white.” This
vitreous fluid is present in the eye
from birth and is not replaced
or exchanged during life. It is
initially attached to the surface
of the retina, which is the light
sensitive nerve tissue layer that
lines the back surface of the
wall of the eye. It is important
to note that it is not necessarily
abnormal to see black spots in
the vision. The size and number
of floaters seen is variable; some
patients (especially short sighted
people) will be aware of numerous
floaters, while others may
never be aware of the symptom
at all. Some floaters can interfere
severely with vision, while others
are barely noticeable. Although
annoying, floaters are usually
harmless and come and go over
the years.
What are flashes?
Flashes are usually caused by
the vitreous body tugging on the
retina. This tugging occurs when
the vitreous body shrinks as a
normal part of the aging process.
Flashes may last for a few
seconds or several minutes and
Flipside Gymnastics
Celebrating 23 years in Medway, MA!
can occur on and off for weeks
or months. They are usually seen
at night or in poor lighting.
Eye migraine can cause
the perception of similar light
flashes, although often these
flashes of light may have numerous
colors. The abnormal light
flashes seen with migraines are
usually very different, appearing
as jagged lines blocking an area
of vision or moving slowly across
the field of vision in one or both
eyes. People who suffer from migraine
headaches will often know
the familiar pattern of these
visual experiences, often occurring
just before the headaches
begin. These migraine flashes
are unrelated to the vitreous
body and its attachment to the
retina.
What causes flashes and
floaters?
The vitreous is composed
of collagen, and this undergoes
structural changes with age, and
will become more liquid like and
watery in later life. At some point,
the chemical bonds that link the
vitreous fluid to the surface of
the retina will become weaker
and the vitreous jelly will separate
from the retina. This
process is called posterior
vitreous detachment or
PVD and is a normal consequence
of aging. Approximately
half of us will have a PVD in one
or both eyes by the age of 60.
PVD will often cause us to notice
the sudden onset of new floaters,
often associated with flashes of
light. Unfortunately, the vitreous
body is sometimes more firmly
attached to the surface of the retina
and may pull away a piece of
the retina or tear the retina as it
separates. This can cause fluid to
escape, pushing the retina off the
inside of the eye. This is known
as retinal detachment, which is a
serious threat to sight. Surgery is
needed to reattach the retina if a
retinal detachment occurs.
When should I seek help?
See your ophthalmologist
if new floaters appear, with or
without sudden light flashes. Any
loss of peripheral (side) vision
should be investigated without a
delay. Your ophthalmologist will
give you a complete eye examination.
Drops are put in the eyes
to enlarge the pupils and determine
whether PVD, retinal tear,
retinal detachment or bleeding is
present. If you have occasional
floaters and flashes, you should
have an annual eye examination.
Symptoms of a PVD most
often occur in one eye at a
time. Even though your ophthalmologist
will check both eyes at
the first visit, it is important to
realize that if similar symptoms
are experienced in the other eye,
you should see your ophthalmologist
again with the onset of new
flashes or floaters as you could be
having a PVD in this eye.
Is there any treatment
for flashes and floaters?
Flashes and floaters are usually
just annoying, not harmful.
However, they can be signs
of serious problems (like a
tear on the retina) and, for this
reason, must not be ignored.
For most people, treatment is not
necessary. Floaters and flashes
usually subside over time, causing
no permanent deterioration
to vision.
At Milford Franklin Eye Center,
we use state-of-the-art laser
technology to treat a variety of
eye problems, including retinal
tears, with full evaluation of
flashes and floaters. In case those
Franklin Golf Rises to
Tourney Play this Year
Franklin Sports
By Christopher Tremblay
Under first year Coach Dustin
Picillo, the Franklin golf team
struggled last fall going 6-9, but
how has one year made a big difference!
The Panther golfers currently
find themselves at 10-2,
have already secured a tournament
berth and are in second
place in the Hockomock League
behind Oliver Ames.
“The big change this year is
that we have a different guy or
two step up each night,” Picillo
said. “Last year, it was do or die,
but this year, we have that one
consistent player and then a different
combo that shows up.”
Having the depth with talented
golfers throughout has
definitely helped the Panthers
claw their way to the top, but
one of the other big changes is
the team’s focus on the course.
“It’s not just one player, it’s
across the board – everyone has
bought into the mental component
of the game,” the Franklin
Coach said. “It’s one hole at a
time. If they have a bad hole,
they just have to let it go and not
let it take up too much real-estate
in their heads. Just keep grinding.”
Junior captain Brian Woefel
and senior captain Matt Dao are
the team’s top two golfers this
fall. Woelfel, who was shooting a
41 or 42 last season, has trimmed
a good three strokes off his score
and is currently shooting an average
of 39 on the course. The
junior has shot as low as a 35 and
as high as a 42, and his coach believes
his average has decreased
due to the fact that he’s playing
more this year and playing consistently.
“There is no real pressure on
me this year,” the junior captain
said. “We have 12 golfers all who
can contribute, and it allows me
to be a little more aggressive on
the course.”
Dao is the team’s only senior
on the squad and according to
the coach is the team’s rock.
“Matt is a stoic individual
who doesn’t get too high or too
low,” Picillo said. “He stays cool
under pressure no matter what
and shoots an average of 41.”
Although Franklin has earned
a spot in the tournament in the
past Dao found his score not
low enough to compete with his
teammates. This year, he aims to
take full advantage of playing in
the post-season.
“It’s amazing
to witness
the growth of
this team over
the past few
years,” the elder
statesman of
the team said.
“It’s exciting to
be a part of the
tournament,
especially in
my senior year.
However, we
have to keep in
mind that history
is history,
and we cannot change that – all
we can do is turn the page.”
Following the two captains
on the score board are sophomore
Matt D’Errico (41 average)
and Connor Norton
(42 average). The two golfers
worked extremely hard to move
up on the board this fall. As a
freshman D’Errico shot at 46
last year, but got himself a junior
membership at the country
club and from what the coach
has been told pretty much lived
there last summer looking to
improve his craft. If the sophomore
takes up resident at the
country club once again next
summer the coach can only
suspect that he’ll continue to
get better.
Norton didn’t see much
playing time on the course last
fall, but this year he seems to be
making his mark and opening
eyes.
“Connor is our x-factor this
year,” the Panther Coach said.
“If he shows up, we usually do
well. He can fluctuate, but he’s
usually a lock for that fourth
spot.”
Depth has been Franklin’s
key to success this year. Ninety
percent of the time, Junior Tyler
Langevein will post a score of
43, while brothers Jason (a junior)
and Gerard (a sophomore)
Collins are putting up an average
of 45 through nine holes of play.
The ability to draw scores from a
variety of competing athletes has
given Picillo a sense of accomplishment.
Franklin High’s golf team is headed to the tournament this year, with a status as second
in the Hockomock League as of mid-October. Their success, says second-year coach
Dustin Picillo, has a lot to do with three key players and a lot of individual step-up by the
rest of the team.
“Our motto this year has
been, ‘Who’s the guy tonight?”
the Coach said. “We have those
top three guys who are rather
consistent on a regular basis,
and then there’s everyone else.
They’re all in the hunt; there’s
a different name picking up the
slack each match.”
The rest of the Panthers’ team
is made up Eric Civetti, another
golfer who continuously puts up
scores in the low 40’s; freshmen
Jake Blaney and Jonah Griffin;
junior Mike Haynes and sophomore
Jake Macchi.
The Franklin golfers are very
excited and looking forward to
taking part in the state tournament,
having already clinched
their spot. However, Picillo
knows that tournament play
is totally different than regular
season play, and he’s trying to
get his team ready for when
the time comes.
“Tournament play is not
the same. The guys will play
18 holes instead of nine, and
we will only be allowed to play
six golfers compared to eight,”
Picillo said. “Luckily, we have
the Hockomock league Championships
before the Sectionals;
this should give them the
same type of pressure they’ll
see in the tournament.”
Although only a handful
of matches remain on the
docket for the Panthers, one
of those matches is a rematch
with Oliver Ames. The recent
Hockomock League Power
Rankings had OA at number
one followed by the Panthers at
two. Earlier in the season, Franklin
fell to the Tigers on their
home course, but are looking for
revenge when they host them at
the Franklin Country Club.
“We lost to them at their
place, and they still have to come
to Franklin before the end of the
season,” the Panther Coach said.
“It will be our course, and we’re
hoping to beat them and snag a
piece of the Hockomock Championship.
It’s going to be tough,
but it will be on our course.”
With only one senior on this
year’s team and a deep bunch of
golfers after that, Franklin should
be able to find itself gunning for
the Hock Title in the future as
well.

Franklin’s DeLucia to Enter
Hall of Fame at Assumption
By KEN HAMWEY
Franklin’s Ralph DeLucia
guided Assumption College’s
softball teams to four championships
during his 18-year tenure
as the Greyhounds’ head coach,
and his 412 career victories are
the most ever compiled in the
program’s history.
On Friday night, November
4th, at the college’s Worcester
campus, the 74-year-old DeLucia
will be inducted into Assumption’s
hall of fame, an honor that
not only is deserving, but also
gives him the distinction of being
a hall of fame coach and player.
DeLucia competed in four
varsity sports at Franklin High
and later excelled in football and
baseball at Dean Junior College,
where he became a hall of fame
inductee in 2005. The 5-foot-8,
155-pound DeLucia was a junior
college All-American as a running
back and also was Dean’s
MVP. A pitcher, second baseman
and shortstop, he hit .335 during
his collegiate days.
“I’m very honored to be going
into Assumption’s hall of fame,’’
DeLucia said. “I’m not so sure
what I did was that special, but I
know I was blessed to have excellent
players who were receptive
to my coaching. My speech will
focus on thanking all my players
and also Assumption’s staff and
its administrators.’’
A native of Franklin, DeLucia
worked for 31 years on the town’s
police force, serving his final 18
years at a lieutenant. During that
time, he coached two of his three
daughters in Franklin’s youth
softball program. He was a coach
at that level for six years, and he
was the program’s president for
three seasons.
“I later became the jayvee
coach at Franklin High in 1987,’’
DeLucia recalled. “We went
14-1, suffering our only loss on
the last day of the season. A year
later, I was appointed the varsity
coach at Franklin.’’
DeLucia’s 10-year stint as the
Panthers’ coach was dynamic,
compiling a career record of
165-47 and capturing four
Hockomock League titles. His
1992 team went 20-0 but lost in
the third round of tourney play
to Case of Swansea.
Coaching his two daughters
(Danielle and Stephanie) made
DeLucia’s years at Franklin delightful.
“We has some fantastic athletes
at Franklin,’’ he emphasized.
“Winning the four titles
was a thrill and going undefeated
in 1992 was exciting. But coaching
my daughters and girls like
Heather and Kristen Swanson,
Holly Price and Stacey Taraskawitz
was such a delight. All six
of them ended their careers at
Franklin with 100 hits or more.’’
DeLucia’s daughters were the
catalysts that led him to coaching.
Danielle was a league all-star
and a two-time Boston Globe allscholastic
while Stephanie was
a league all-star and a Globe and
Boston Herald all-scholastic. Both
of them excelled at Assumption
where DeLucia coached Stephanie
for two years.
Taking the varsity post at
Assumption in 1998, DeLucia
retired from coaching last year
after compiling a career record
of 412-384-6. His teams won
one Northeast-10 regular season
championship and were Northeast-10
Tournament champs on
John’s
family owned and operated for 45 years
three occasions.
“I considered myself a teacher
first,’’ DeLucia said. “Fundamentals
were important, and I
stressed them. I always tried to be
calm. On the field I resorted to
playing small ball at times and I
also relied on power some years.’’
One of DeLucia’s top memories
includes coaching his daughter
Stephanie and seeing her lead
the nation in hitting (Division
2) with a .566 batting average.
There were other highlights, too.
“In my first year at Assumption
we posted a 34-13-1 record,’’
DeLucia recalled. “That
set a record for a single season.
Then, we won 36 games my second
year and 38 my third season,
which still stands as the school’s
all-time best single season record.
Those were thrilling times but I
also admired coaching pitchers
like Kristen Ladebauche and
Jennifer Lowery. Kristen finished
with 695 career strikeouts and
Jennifer had 705.’’
The titles, the statistics and
the records were all admirable
but DeLucia also enjoyed turning
out players who became good citizens.
“I liked seeing my players
achieve their vocational goals,’’
he said. “Learning life lessons in
softball was important and my
