25 TIPS TO AVOID BECOMING
A VICTIM OF AUTO CRIME
1. Hide your valuables from plain sight to avoid attracting thieves.
2. Lock your vehicle and take your keys. Approximately 50% of vehicles
stolen were left unlocked.
3. Never hide a second set of keys in or on your vehicle.
4. Park in well-lighted areas or attended lots. More than half of all vehicle
thefts occur at night. Auto thieves tend to target unattended parking lots.
5. Never leave your vehicle running, even if you will only be away for
a minute. Vehicles are commonly stolen at convenience stores, gas
stations, ATMs, etc. Many vehicles are also stolen on cold mornings when
the owner leaves the vehicle running to warm up. Leaving your key in an
unattended motor vehicle is a crime in Texas.
6. Don’t leave documents with important personal details such as title
or insurance card in your vehicle. A thief can use these to sell your stolen
vehicle. File the title and registration receipt at your home or office and
carry your insurance card in your purse or wallet.
7. Park with your wheels turned toward the curb and use your emergency
brake, making your vehicle less easy to tow away. Wheels should also be
turned to the side in driveways and parking lots.
8. Your vehicle may be more vulnerable when you park outside. If you
have a garage, use it. Lock your garage as well as your vehicle’s doors.
9. Disable your vehicle when leaving it unattended for an extended
period. Remove the electronic ignition fuse, coil wire or distributor rotor
or otherwise disable your vehicle any time thieves may have extended
access to it.
10. Engrave your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or personal I.D.
number on expensive accessories and parts. Stolen vehicles/parts are
more easily traced when VINs have been etched on vehicle windows, major
parts and
expensive
accessories.
11. Have an
ignition or
fuel kill switch
installed by
someone who
is qualified.
Ignition kill
switches can be used to stop the vehicle from starting. A fuel kill switch
cuts off the flow of fuel when the switch is off.
12. Get locking devices for inside your vehicle. Visible steering wheel
locks prevent the steering wheel from being turned properly. Gas or
brake pedal locks disable the fuel and braking functions. Gearshift locks
disable shifting of the transmission by locking it in place. Tire/wheel locks
wrap around the wheel and prevent the vehicle from moving. Hood locks
prevent the thief from gaining access to your security system and battery.
An armored collar around the steering column protects the column and
ignition.
13. Get alarm systems for your vehicle. Alarms emit a loud warning sound
when the door, hood or trunk are opened. Optional sensors include
glass breakage, motion tampering and towing. Panic buttons, back-up
batteries, flashing parking lights or headlights and automatic engine
disable features are also recommended.
14. Get a vehicle tracker, which is usually a silent device that can be
hidden in a vehicle to transmit a signal that allows the vehicle’s location
to be tracked.

CCS SOCIETY MEMBERS VOLUNTEER FOR CHILDREN’S TUMOR
FOUNDATION
Members of the Cypress Christian School National Honor Society
volunteered at the NF walk benefiting the Children’s Tumor Foundation.
NF, which stands for neurofibromatosis, is a condition that causes tumors
to form in the brain, spinal column and nerves. This condition is usually
diagnosed in childhood or early adulthood. Honor society students made
such a difference in the lives of the many children present at the walk. They
painted faces, dressed up as super heroes and personally interacted with
the children and adults affected by NF. It was a great day of fun and service.
CCS WARRIOR ATHLETES SET RECORDS
The fall sports season at CyChristian has been a rewarding one for middle school and high
school athletes. The Warrior football teams are experiencing one of the best seasons in
school history. Cross country athletes set records when they competed on the toughest
course in Texas and volleyball teams brought home trophies from multiple tournaments.
In keeping with the athletic theme for 2016 of “character, courage, commitment,” CCS
coaches have emphasized these qualities in practices, games and events to encourage
the team through the season but, more importantly, to train them for life.
businesses, faith-based and/or non-profit organizations, the community
and the school district designed to encourage students (elementary
through high school) to finish school and focus on future education and
career goals. A mentor is a suitable role committed to helping a student
with his/her academic and social development. Mentors meet with
students one-on-one for approximately 30 minutes each week. Currently,
over 600 mentors are matched with students.
To become a mentor, you must:
attend a training session (REGISTER); complete a global volunteer/mentor
application; consent to a criminal history record check; Training Sessions -
Registration is REQUIRED.
Cypress Community Newsletter | November 2016
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.
Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to
diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the
U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and
overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused
prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from
the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that
their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines - flushing them
down the toilet or throwing them in the trash - both pose potential safety
and health hazards.
For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or about
the October 22 nd Take Back Day event, visit the DEA Diversion website.
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found
in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant
in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting
helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership
skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities
that allow them to:
• Try new things.
• Provide service to others.
• Build self-confidence.
• Reinforce ethical standards.
Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals
while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high
self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer
pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.
Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting
through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help
our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area
Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5
to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing
units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly.
Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools including:
Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley, Horne, Jowell,
Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan, Tipps, Walker and
Wilson.
Other Community groups include: Autumn Creek Baptist Church, Beck and
Masten Automotive, Cornerstone United Methodist Church, Copperfield
Church, Crossbridge Church, Cy-Fair Kiwanis Club, Deerfield Village HOA,
LDS Bear Creek and Copperfield Wards, Middlegate Village HOA, Peace
ADOPT A US SOLDIER
Adopt A US Soldier is a non-profit organization that seeks volunteers and
donors to help show the brave men and women fighting for our freedom
that their sacrifices will not go unnoticed. It connects supportive civilians
with deployed soldiers and offers a channel by which to communicate
encouragement and express gratitude to those serving in the United States
Armed Forces. Adopt A US Soldier is sustained by its volunteer workforce
located across the United States.
After a supporter asked a soldier what they needed, his response was as
follows: “No requests, just don’t want to be forgotten.” -LCPL O.J.T. III
When registering for Adopt A US Soldier your involvement can range from
writing letters and sending postcards, to mailing care packages full of items
a soldier may need or want. Handwritten letters are most important and
meaningful to soldiers. Adopt A US Soldier encourages civilians to adopt
a soldier to show your support for those that are making sacrifices for our
country. If interested, please go to www.adoptaussoldier.org to register.
