Research program: The NSF Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center for High-rate
Nanomanufacturing has been funded since 2004 to develop tools for high-rate/high-volume bottom-up, precise,
assembly of nanoelements. I lead an interdisciplinary team of researchers to help guide the overall development
of sustainable production systems for responsible nanomanufacturing. Six distinct research areas are underway
to: 1) measure and control nanoparticle exposures; 2) develop robust, low cost, highthroughput screening tools
for nanoparticle exposure; 3) determine the economic feasibility of manufacturing in light of potential
environmental consequences; 4) investigate life cycle issues; 5) work with government officials on state
environmental, health, and safety approaches; 6) evaluate applications for their ethical values.

Research program: The Advanced Integrated Circuits and Systems Lab is
focused on the design and development of high-performance integrated circuits and systems. Our research
focuses on the design of innovative microsystems with on -chip signal processing for biomedical imaging devices
and bio/chemical sensors to enhance detection/classification and image resolution. We address issues related
to integration/packaging, EM coupling, sensor readout, low-noise and low-power operation. We also investigate
novel integration approaches for transceivers in high-speed optical wireless communication.
