Primary Research Area: Nanotechnology/Microtechnology
Keywords: Environmentally Benign Manufacturing, life cycle assessment,
policy
Research program: The NSF Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center for High-rate
Nanomanufacturing has been funded since 2004 to develop tools for high-rate/high-volume bottom-up, precise,
assembly of nanoelements. I lead an interdisciplinary team of researchers to help guide the overall development
of sustainable production systems for responsible nanomanufacturing. Six distinct research areas are underway
to: 1) measure and control nanoparticle exposures; 2) develop robust, low cost, highthroughput screening tools
for nanoparticle exposure; 3) determine the economic feasibility of manufacturing in light of potential
environmental consequences; 4) investigate life cycle issues; 5) work with government officials on state
environmental, health, and safety approaches; 6) evaluate applications for their ethical values.
Research facilities available: George J. Kostas Nanoscale Technonlogy and Manufacturing Research Center
http://www.kostas.neu.edu/; SimaPro - one seat license
Research partners needed: Life Cycle Assessment; End-of-Life Processing; Environmental Health and
Safety; Exposure Monitoring; Toxicity Screening; Test Play Video Game for kids.
Primary Research Area: Nanotechnology/Microtechnology
Keywords: Energy-efficient Wireless Communications, High-performance
nano/microelectronic circuits and systems, RF/optical circuits
Research program: The Advanced Integrated Circuits and Systems Lab is
focused on the design and development of high-performance integrated circuits and systems. Our research
focuses on the design of innovative microsystems with on -chip signal processing for biomedical imaging devices
and bio/chemical sensors to enhance detection/classification and image resolution. We address issues related
to integration/packaging, EM coupling, sensor readout, low-noise and low-power operation. We also investigate
novel integration approaches for transceivers in high-speed optical wireless communication.
Research facilities available: Class 1000 Clean Room; High Frequency Test/Measurement Equipment, Probe
Station; 12 Gb/s Signal Quality Analyzer; Optical bench equipment and components; 10Gb/s Optical Sources and
Modulators; Flexible printed circuit board (PCB); Full suite of EDA tools (Cadence, ADS); Full -wave EM solver
(HFSS, CST)
Research partners needed: Photonic Structures, Bio/chemical Sensors, Medical Instrumentation, Partners
requiring sensor readout & circuitry, Wireless Communications
