Create Some Wonderful Memories with a
Family Thanksgiving Scrapbook
Scrapbook enthusiasts already
know that these unique pieces of
folk art are the perfect way to
capture memories and celebrate
life’s special moments and individual
accomplishments. From baby
pictures and school pictures to prom
portraits and wedding pictures,
scrapbooks are the perfect way to
document life’s journeys and mark
individual and family milestones.
Creating a special family scrapbook
is also a wonderful way to
document and remember family
gatherings, like the ones that take
place around the Thanksgiving table
each year.
Using scrapbooks to remember
special Thanksgiving day moments
is a great way for families to relive
those special moments again and
again, and the mementoes that
can be part of such a project are
nearly endless. From kindergarten
drawings of turkeys and pilgrims
To advertise call 678-654-4111
to elaborately created recipes for
turkey and all the trimmings, each
member of the family can add his or
her special touches to the project.
The younger kids can contribute
special drawings and elaborate
finger paint creations, along with
pressed leaves and flowers from the
Thanksgiving day centerpiece. The
older kids can contribute stories,
essays and other works to express
their feelings about their family,
the Thanksgiving day celebration
and the upcoming holiday season.
And all members of the family can
contribute their own special recipes
for the cooking section of the
scrapbook project.
And of course no scrapbook project
would be complete without lots and
lots of photos, and the Thanksgiving
holiday certain provides many
opportunities for picture taking.
From posed shots around the
bountiful Thanksgiving day table
to candid shots of the cook putting
the finishing touches on the turkey,
these photographs can provide a
wonderful document of the family
Thanksgiving tradition through the
years.
Creating a family Thanksgiving
scrapbook can become a favorite
family tradition, with every member
of the family adding a new page
as each year’s holiday rolls around.
These scrapbooks can also become
treasured family heirlooms, passed
down through the generations as
a document of times gone by and
a testament to the future. And
all of this fun can be had with
just a blank scrapbook, lots of
family memories and a little bit of
creativity.
Five Tips for Better Portraits
Whether you’re spending time with
friends, or colleagues, or a significant
other – whether you have a fancy
DSLR, or a digicam, or just a handy
cell phone – whenever you lift up your
camera to take a photo, you want it to
count. The purpose of a photograph
is to make a memory that will last, and
the purpose of a portrait is to capture
not just what somebody looks like, but
who they are in that moment when you
are most fond of them, or when they
are doing something endearing, or when
you look at them and can’t help feel
that in this one instant, they are at
their best.
In that moment, not any photograph
will do. We have all seen pictures of
people’s buddies with red eyes and
toothy grins. We’ve all seen portraits
where we have to stop and look close,
because it’s not obvious who the subject
is in all that busy mess. Bad portraits
are extraordinarily common in the age
of Facebook and Instagram, but good
portraits aren’t at all hard to make. By
keeping just a couple of things in mind,
you can turn yours from thoughtless
snapshots into treasured memories.
1. The Rule of Thirds: Our brains like
symmetry. But asymmetry is much more
interesting. That is why you’ll rarely see
an image by a professional photographer
whose main subject is squarely centered.
The photographer will take a viewfinder
or LCD and mentally divide it into
three. He or she will then place the
subject not in the center slot, but off
to one side, either left or right. This
creates a sense of dynamism: the eye
slides over the image, moving from the
background toward the subject. It also
creates drama: by showing the subject in
contrast to a broad field of background,
the image suggests that he or she
dominates it.
2. Aim for the Eyes: As the proverb
says, the eyes are windows to the
soul. In the eyes, we see a portrait
To advertise call 678-654-4111
8

subject’s personality, their mind at
work. In the eyes, we see the emotional
arc that turns a static image into a
story. No camera captures an entire
scene in focus. In most conditions, a
photographer is working with a limited
depth of field. Knowing that, an
effective photographer will make sure
that the face – and especially the eyes
– are crisp and clear. This makes sure
that the viewer knows who the subject
of the photograph is. It is the best way,
perhaps, to capture what it is about the
subject that made you take your camera
out in the first place.
3. Control Depth of Field: If it is
important to know what in a portrait
is in focus, it is equally important
to consider what is not. Selective
focus, or limited depth of field, is
perhaps the most common technique
used by photographers to separate a
subject from his or her background. A
photographer with a DSLR will create
shallow depth of field – a situation
in which the subject is clear, and the
background is a pleasant blur – by
opening up the aperture of the lens to
a small f-number (f/3.5 or 2.8). But
even without a DSLR, you can do this,
too. If your point-and-shoot camera
or cell phone has the ability, you can
put it into “portrait mode,” which will
make the adjustment for you. Getting
close to the subject, and standing him or
her far away from the background, will
emphasize this effect. Even if you can’t
quite get your camera to blur, you can
still use the idea: making sure that the
background is uncluttered by too much
distracting action often has a similar
effect on the eye.
4. Angle of Approach: A good portrait
is rarely straight on, directly at the
subject’s face, and it is rarely of a
subject entirely in profile. When a
photographer goes to take a portrait,
perhaps the simplest thing he or she can
do to create drama and dynamism is to
position the subject in three-quarter
view. In other words, you want your
subject to look toward the camera,
but not directly at the camera. You
want your subject’s face to be mostly
visible, but not flattened and wide. By
doing this, and by using the rule of
thirds, what you are doing is effectively
creating a scene rather than a simple
image. Like focusing on the eyes, you
are turning your portrait into a story.
5. Choose Your Moment: This is probably
the most important tip of them all,
and it can’t be done through a simple
technical adjustment. If the subject
of your portrait is uncooperative, or
if he or she is blinking, or chewing, or
slurping on a milkshake, no amount of
framing or focusing is going to save that
image. Likewise, if the photographer has
posed a subject, wooden and frozen in
a cheesy smile, and warned them not to
move, that portrait is probably doomed
as well. The key to great portraits is to
be present with your subject – to chat,
to laugh, to be in the moment, and to
give him or her a chance to act natural.
Have the camera out. Let your subject
get used to it. That way, when you raise
it to take your shot, you’ll have the best
chance to catch them in that unguarded,
charming pose that is why you wanted
to take a picture to begin with.
Taking better portraits is not a difficult
skill to master, but it does take practice.
It means looking around online and
finding images you like, then taking lots
of pictures until you’ve mastered that
style. All five of these tips are great
places to start. But most important
is one of the basic tenets of the pros:
unless you have your camera with you,
you’ll never get the shot. So take your
camera everywhere. Have fun. Take
pictures. Think about what you’re
seeing. Before long, you’ll be the master
of Facebook and the envy of Instagram
and all of your friends will want you to
take their photos, too.
Tell the Story of Your Life -
Decorating with Family Photographs
There are many creative ways to
decorate your home, but few are as
personal and special as decorating
with family photographs. You can
use the family photographs you have
accumulated through the years,
from formal portraits and school
photos to candid vacation shots,
to decorate the home you have
so carefully built with that same
family.
One of the best parts of decorating
with family photos is the ability to
create an ever-changing landscape.
When the holiday season approaches,
you can festoon your hallways with
Santa pictures of the children and
formal portraits of the family in
holiday attire. When the warm days
of summer arrive, you can change
the look and adorn your walls with
pictures of vacations from the past.
Add Drama with Shadow Boxes
You do not have to limit the story of
your life to two dimensions. Shadow
boxes allow you to create a threedimensional
impact while you show
off your precious memories. You can
use your favorite photograph as a
basis for the shadow box and then
layer in special items to enhance the
look.
If your son or daughter is a proud
member of the military, you could
use a formal uniform picture as the
highlight of the shadow box, then
add medals, accommodations and
other awards around the edges for a
beautiful three-dimensional look.
To advertise call 678-654-4111
12

Include Travel Souvenirs
and Family Mementos
One of the greatest
things about family
vacations is the lifelong
memories you will make.
You can remember that
wonderful day at the
beach or trip to the
amusement park long
after the kids are grown
and gone. You can make
the memories even more
special by incorporating
them into your decorating scheme.
Dedicating a wall or hallway to
vacation photos is a great way to
keep special memories alive year
round.
You can even incorporate your
favorite vacation memories into
the frame itself. If you enjoyed
gathering pieces of driftwood on
your last trip to the beach, you
can put those pieces together into
a beautiful custom frame and
decorate it with fishhooks, seashells
and other nautical items.
Create a Photo Timeline
You probably have hundreds of
photographs of your kids, starting
from when they were babies and
continuing through their senior
proms and wedding days. Why not
use those accumulated photographs
to create a timeline that tells the
story of your family in pictures?
A photo timeline is the perfect
accent for a long hallway. You can
start with baby pictures at one end
of the hallway and work your way
up, adding new pictures as you get
them. No matter what story you
want to tell, family photos can help
you tell it.
Harness the Power of Technology
You do not have to limit your special
memories to wooden picture frames
and static shadow boxes. Modern
technology means you can create an
ever-changing tableau with just the
click of a button.
Adding an electronic picture frame
to your photo gallery is a great
way to keep your memories fresh
and interesting. If you choose a
wireless model that links to your
home network, you can invite family
members from all corners of the
globe to contribute their favorite
shots to your home photo gallery.
The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe
Nov 13 at 3:00 PM
This enchanting musical is based on C.S. Lewis’ adventure story
about four children of war torn England, who accidentally enter the
land of Narnia by climbing through a magic wardrobe. This strange
and wondrous place is ruled by the cold-hearted White Witch, who
makes the winter last year round. Although they seem unlikely
saviors, the children fulfill an ancient prophecy by defeating the witch,
thus restoring sunshine and peace to the spell-bound Narnia and
returning the great Lion King Aslan to his throne.
Newnan and simplify your Day-After-Thanksgiving experience! The
name “Plaid Friday” celebrates the idea of LOCAL, which aims to
independently owned businesses, especially during the holiday
season. Wear Plaid attire during Plaid Friday and expect to SAVE,
as numerous downtown businesses will offer a significant discount to
any customer wearing plaid clothing! Free parking is available along
