Five Tips for Better Portraits
Whether you’re spending time with
friends, or colleagues, or a significant
other – whether you have a fancy
DSLR, or a digicam, or just a handy
cell phone – whenever you lift up your
camera to take a photo, you want it to
count. The purpose of a photograph
is to make a memory that will last, and
the purpose of a portrait is to capture
not just what somebody looks like, but
who they are in that moment when you
are most fond of them, or when they
are doing something endearing, or when
you look at them and can’t help feel
that in this one instant, they are at
their best.
In that moment, not any photograph
will do. We have all seen pictures of
people’s buddies with red eyes and
toothy grins. We’ve all seen portraits
where we have to stop and look close,
because it’s not obvious who the subject
is in all that busy mess. Bad portraits
are extraordinarily common in the age
of Facebook and Instagram, but good
portraits aren’t at all hard to make. By
keeping just a couple of things in mind,
you can turn yours from thoughtless
snapshots into treasured memories.
1. The Rule of Thirds: Our brains like
symmetry. But asymmetry is much more
interesting. That is why you’ll rarely see
an image by a professional photographer
whose main subject is squarely centered.
The photographer will take a viewfinder
or LCD and mentally divide it into
three. He or she will then place the
subject not in the center slot, but off
to one side, either left or right. This
creates a sense of dynamism: the eye
slides over the image, moving from the
background toward the subject. It also
creates drama: by showing the subject in
contrast to a broad field of background,
the image suggests that he or she
dominates it.
2. Aim for the Eyes: As the proverb
says, the eyes are windows to the
soul. In the eyes, we see a portrait

subject’s personality, their mind at
work. In the eyes, we see the emotional
arc that turns a static image into a
story. No camera captures an entire
scene in focus. In most conditions, a
photographer is working with a limited
depth of field. Knowing that, an
effective photographer will make sure
that the face – and especially the eyes
– are crisp and clear. This makes sure
that the viewer knows who the subject
of the photograph is. It is the best way,
perhaps, to capture what it is about the
subject that made you take your camera
out in the first place.
3. Control Depth of Field: If it is
important to know what in a portrait
is in focus, it is equally important
to consider what is not. Selective
focus, or limited depth of field, is
perhaps the most common technique
used by photographers to separate a
subject from his or her background. A
photographer with a DSLR will create
shallow depth of field – a situation
in which the subject is clear, and the
background is a pleasant blur – by
opening up the aperture of the lens to
a small f-number (f/3.5 or 2.8). But
even without a DSLR, you can do this,
too. If your point-and-shoot camera
or cell phone has the ability, you can
put it into “portrait mode,” which will
make the adjustment for you. Getting
close to the subject, and standing him or
her far away from the background, will
emphasize this effect. Even if you can’t
quite get your camera to blur, you can
still use the idea: making sure that the
background is uncluttered by too much
distracting action often has a similar
effect on the eye.
4. Angle of Approach: A good portrait
is rarely straight on, directly at the
subject’s face, and it is rarely of a
subject entirely in profile. When a
photographer goes to take a portrait,
perhaps the simplest thing he or she can
do to create drama and dynamism is to
position the subject in three-quarter
view. In other words, you want your
subject to look toward the camera,
but not directly at the camera. You
want your subject’s face to be mostly
visible, but not flattened and wide. By
doing this, and by using the rule of
thirds, what you are doing is effectively
creating a scene rather than a simple
image. Like focusing on the eyes, you
are turning your portrait into a story.
5. Choose Your Moment: This is probably
the most important tip of them all,
and it can’t be done through a simple
technical adjustment. If the subject
of your portrait is uncooperative, or
if he or she is blinking, or chewing, or
slurping on a milkshake, no amount of
framing or focusing is going to save that
image. Likewise, if the photographer has
posed a subject, wooden and frozen in
a cheesy smile, and warned them not to
move, that portrait is probably doomed
as well. The key to great portraits is to
be present with your subject – to chat,
to laugh, to be in the moment, and to
give him or her a chance to act natural.
Have the camera out. Let your subject
get used to it. That way, when you raise
it to take your shot, you’ll have the best
chance to catch them in that unguarded,
charming pose that is why you wanted
to take a picture to begin with.
Taking better portraits is not a difficult
skill to master, but it does take practice.
It means looking around online and
finding images you like, then taking lots
of pictures until you’ve mastered that
style. All five of these tips are great
places to start. But most important
is one of the basic tenets of the pros:
unless you have your camera with you,
you’ll never get the shot. So take your
camera everywhere. Have fun. Take
pictures. Think about what you’re
seeing. Before long, you’ll be the master
of Facebook and the envy of Instagram
and all of your friends will want you to
take their photos, too.

Thanksgiving from 6- 8 p.m. During the event, Santa visits downtown
Newnan to greet children, who are welcome to sit on Santa’s lap
and read him their Christmas list! The downtown streets will close
within the hours prior to the event, as Santa will be making a special
trip from the North Pole to the downtown Newnan Square! Santa
will arrive downtown in a Fire Truck, and will immediately light the
beautiful downtown Christmas Tree before the event begins. This
annual tradition in historic downtown Newnan reminds us all of the
importance of the holiday season: fostering hope, charity, forgiveness,
and kindness. This Litter-Free, Smoke-Free event is free to the public,
and welcomes children of all ages. Free parking is available along
downtown streets, and in the City of Newnan’s public parking lots,
located at: 13 Lagrange Street, 25 Lagrange Street, 22 Spring Street,
6 First Avenue, 50 East Broad Street, 65 East Broad Street, 41 East
Washington Street, and 22 East Broad Street.

support The Children’s Village at Christian City at the Chair-ity event,
featuring live jazz, hors d’oeuvres, desserts, silent auction and a raffle
drawing to win a new Infiniti Q50 from Infiniti of South Atlanta. The
raffle is hosted by South Side Atlanta Rotary Clubs. All proceeds from
both the Infiniti Raffle and the Chair-ity event will support children in
need, victims of abuse and abandonment who now live safely at The
Children’s Village at Christian City. The Infiniti raffle drawing will occur
at the end of the event and you do not have to be present to win.

Parade/Tree Lighting
Visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus

and along the sidewalks in Downtown Fayetteville for the 6th Annual
Downtown Christmas Parade. The parade starts at 5:00 pm, followed
by Fayetteville’s Tree Lighting Program, which will start immediately
after the parade.

entertainment, food, a parade of lights at 5:30 p.m., lighting of the

Hometown Holiday in Peachtree City
Dec 3 5PM
Peachtree City’s annual Hometown Holiday will kick off at 5:00 p.m.
at The Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater. Activities include children’s
holiday crafts, making s’mores and live musical performances by local
talent. Afterwards, follow Santa on the golf cart thru lighted paths to
City Hall for the lighting of the tree. Hometown Holiday will also serve
as an official Toys for Tots drop-off location to help provide Christmas
gifts to local families in need. Attendees are invited to bring a new,
unwrapped toy to donate at the event.
