SwCC Ushers in New Era of Growth, Strength & Stability
School Changes Promote Standing Stronger Together
By Jarilyn Fox
Southwestern Christian College, the nation’s only
Church of Christ-supported historically black college,
is ushering in a new era of growth, strength, and stability.
Dr. Jack Evans, Sr., President Emeritus; Dr.
Shelton Gibbs, III, Interim President; and Dr. John
Dansby, Sr., Board Chairman; are leaning on one another’s
vested interest in SwCC, their mutual love and
respect for each other, and divine guidance.
“Whatever
we do, we need
to do it together.
We have men
here who are
believers in the
Word of God—
that there is
s t r e n g t h i n
unity,” Evans
said. “We
wanted to develop
a theme
we feel will contribute
to the
growth of this
Southwestern Christian College
school. Thus,
we are binding
our forces together
to be an even stronger Christian college for
the future.”
The togetherness of which Evans speaks serves
as inspiration for SwCC’s go-forward strategy and
theme: “By God’s Grace...Standing Stronger Together—Our
Unforgettable Past, Our Unshakable
Present, Our Unprecedented Future.” With this in
mind, the leadership is pressing on to increase the
school’s financial stability and increase student enrollment.
“I am very, very hopeful that during the time I
serve in this capacity, I will be able to bridge us to
the person that I believe will succeed Dr. Evans and
lead us into the rest of the 21st century,” Gibbs said.
“I have been immensely blessed to be a part of this
institution as a student, Director of Admissions, faculty
member, and part of the Board of Trustees. I
want to serve in this position because I have grandchildren
that I want this school to be able to educate
and serve.
Dansby is confident that the theme, perpetuated
by the three men working in concert, along with the
support of the Board, will ensure that SwCC remains
a formidable force. He said the Board is comprised of
individuals with innovative ideas, broad educational
experience, intense business acumen, and—most of
all—a zeal and passion for the college.
“I have been here for 26 years now, and I have
observed all of the wonderful work that Dr. Jack Evans
has accomplished while here,” he
[Dansby] said. He added that Evans’ work
has helped build the foundation for the
next level of growth.
“This school actually contributes to the
strengthening of the Church of Christ,”
Evans said. “My primary interest in this
school is what it does for the church. We
all want this school to remain alive and
well.”
Putting the theme into motion, “By
God’s Grace...Standing Stronger Together,”
SwCC is gearing up for its 79th
Lectureship, beginning with Founders’ Day activities—including
a tea—on November 20, and continuing
through November 24. This year’s Lectureship
will be like none other. Attendees can expect to hear
the vision for the future, selections from the SwCC A
Cappella Chorus, and a special salute honoring Dr.
Jack Evans. The week-long Lectureship activities
will include soul-stirring singing, remarkable speakers,
panel discussions, a much lauded ladies session,
and much more.
Registration is open now. While individual attendance
is welcome, the Lectureship committee encourages
group registration. To learn more about SwCC
and its upcoming Lectureship festivities, visit
“One hundred pianos tuned
to the same fork are automatically
tuned to one another.”
Southwestern Christian
College (SwCC), the only
historically Black Christian
institution founded and
sponsored by members of Churches of Christ, is accredited
as a four-year (level II) educational college
(limited to bachelor’s degree in Bible and Religious
Education), with a two-year associate program in liberal
arts. It has existed as a school that has united and
fortified our brotherhood in faith and doctrine for
many generations. Through the years, it has called to
us and we have answered.
For so many, November conjures fond memories.
From my early childhood, Thanksgiving Day was
always spent on the campus of SwCC during its annual
Lectureship. Thanksgiving was a time of unity
because it was a special day of brotherhood fellowship.
It was the day that alumni returned to nourish
and renew lifelong friendships. Congregations from
Fort Worth, Dallas, East Texas, and saints from all
over the country made the pilgrimage to Terrell,
Texas. During these early years the community of
Terrell welcomed saints to stay in their homes as motels
were not plentiful or available.
Southwestern Christian College became our
School. Our brotherhood was unified working together
to keep the dream of G. P. Bowser alive. The
Lord blessed our efforts, and our school began to
grow. Consequently, the city of Terrell was blessed
and also began to grow. I would like to believe it was
because our great school was part of its community.
Psalm 133:1-3 (GW) - See how good and pleasant
it is when brothers and sisters live together in harmony!
It is like fine, scented oil on the head, running
down the beard—down Aaron’s beard—running over
the collar of his robes. It is like dew on {Mount}
Hermon, dew which comes down on Zion’s mountains.
That is where the LORD promised the blessing
of eternal life.
The above biblical verses illustrate the great need
for brotherhood unity.
Unique Education: Christian Education
When Ralph Waldo Emerson said that Harvard College
taught all the branches of learning, Henry Thoreau
said, “Yes all the branches but none of the
roots.” We know that Christian Education serves as
the roots of all learning.
Mission Statement
♦
Why We Must Secure Southwestern Christian College
By Dr. Shelton Gibbs, III
♦
♦
Offer a holistic educational program that will
motivate the student to value and achieve excellence
within the context of commitment to moral
and spiritual values;
To assist students in making their transitions
from high school to higher education on various
levels;
To assist students in preparation for varied vocations
in life; and
♦ To prepare future leaders for their distinct communities
and the world at large.
Southwestern Christian College is a place devoted
to Christian education. When young Christians from
all across America enroll into the college, it becomes
their new home. This Christian setting is a good
place for these young people, with new found freedom,
to embark upon their educational careers. Incorporating
Bible classes, Christian instructions, daily
chapel, the world renowned chorus, midnight devotions,
and more keeps spiritual growth and maturity as
the central goal of their educational experience. At
Southwestern each student’s faith is challenged, but it
is also nourished and encouraged. Being a Christian
is no longer strange or uncommon. It is the norm.
This extraordinary institution is the place where
young people with a shared experience are shaped and
molded into the unique and distinctive Southwestern
family; the place where we become one.
Proverbs 1:7 (GW) - The fear of the LORD is
the beginning of knowledge. Stubborn fools despise
wisdom and discipline.
Psalm 119:9-11 (GW) - How can a young person
keep his life pure? {He can do it} by holding on to
your word. I wholeheartedly searched for you. Do
not let me wander away from your commandments. I
have treasured your promise in my heart so that I may
not sin against you.
Proverbs 3:5-7 (GW) - Trust in the LORD with
all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he
will make your paths smooth. Do not consider yourself
wise. Fear the LORD, and turn way from evil.
The above biblical verses reflect SwCC’s mission
and vision.
Lifetime Christian Relationships Formed
“To be rich in friends is to be poor in nothing”
(Lilian Whiting).
Forming lifelong relationships is a huge part of
what makes Southwestern so special. As alumni, we
leave SwCC with much more than a degree. Many
leave with enduring friendships, marriage partners,
business partners, and a network of Christian fellowship.
What I have gained from my Southwestern relationships
is both immeasurable and invaluable.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (GW) - Two people are better
than one because {together} they have a good
reward for their hard work. If one falls, the other can
help his friend get up. But how tragic it is for the one
who is {all} alone when he falls. There is no one to
help him get up. Again, if two people lie down together,
they can keep warm, but how can one person
keep warm? Though one person may be overpowered
by another, two people can resist one opponent. A
triple-braded rope is not easily broken.
The above biblical verses reflect SwCC alumni
relationships.
Church Benefited
“The purpose of the church is found in the exaltation
of Jesus Christ, evangelism of the lost, edification
of the believers, and expression of service.”
Numerous preachers, elders, deacons, Bible
school teachers, and ministry leaders serve many local
congregations across America and foreign countries.
There are probably more graduates of SwCC filling
these ministry positions than any other institution. I
often wonder what the Greenville Avenue Church of
Christ would be had there not been contributions of
the many alumni toward its leadership, growth, and
development. I am sure many of you can say the
same of your congregations. Our commitment to our
school should be renewed each time we encounter
capable, sound, God-fearing graduates who are faithfully
carrying out the work of the church.
Ephesians 4:11-13 (GW) - And he gave some,
apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists;
and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of
the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying
of the body of Christ:
The above biblical verses illustrate how the
church benefits from Christian education.
Community
“A Christian worker is good; a worker for Christ is
better; but Christ in a worker, working out His will
through him or her is best of all.”
Doctors, lawyers, school teachers, entrepreneurs,
politicians, and numerous other professionals who are
SwCC graduates are actively serving their communities.
I am proud that my first grandson was brought
into the world by a Southwestern alumnus, Dr. Reba
Williams White. This same grandson is now my first
grandchild to attend our school. I have committed all
of my children to this institution and each of them has
gone on to secure additional degrees and serve their
communities as Christian professionals. My hope is
that my grandson and other grandchildren will do the
same.
“,,,I shall be telling this with a sign
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”
Robert Frost
The Board of Southwestern Christian College, the
only Historically Black College and University supported
by members of the churches of Christ, has chosen
to take the road less traveled. Often times, we as
Christians take the road less traveled in order to ensure
we Glorify the Master. This time is no different
for our unique group of diverse Board members. We
are marching forward to ensure our interim president,
Dr. Shelton Gibbs, III, has the support and direction
needed to soar while standing on the shoulders of our
president emeritus, Dr. Jack Evans, Sr.
The road was chosen in support of the thousands
of individuals that have graduated from the school
The Road Less Traveled
By Dr. John Dansby, Sr.
and moved on to accomplish remarkable things. For
many, SwCC offers a safe place, a haven, a rock in a
weary land. I think of people like Dr. Edward Robinson
who continues as a member of our faculty, and
Dr. Ervin Seamster who now serves as a member of
our board and many, many others.
The road was chosen so that our children and our
children’s children will know of the legacy of our
school, the school for which most of us grew up with
fond memories. The school that is an anchor among
African-American churches of Christ. The school
where the preaching giants among us, like G. P.
Bowser, R. N. Hogan, J. S. Winston, S. T. W. Gibbs, I
and II, and many, many others, invested in and sacrificed
for.
The road was chosen so that we can continue to
teach, train, and nurture outstanding Gospel ministers;
evangelists that have been taught how to exegete
scriptures, present relatable parallels, and deliver the
word in a manner that pricks
hearts and moves the masses to
confess the Lord as their Savior.
The road was chosen to
build on the history of some of
the best A Capella choruses and
singing this side of heaven and
Christian students lifting their
voices, singing praises, and
humbly sharing the heartfelt
love for Christ through spiritual
songs. Their voices
glorify our God with
warmth and purity.
The road was chosen as
a vehicle for fulfilling the
Great Commission. With
each new student enrolled,
we are increasing our ability
to reach more of the lost.
We are educating and
building an army of soldiers for the Lord, and we are
preparing them to go out, spread the word, and win
more souls for His kingdom.
Together, we will travel the road less taken to
secure Southwestern Christian College. United, with
a new direction to take our school to new heights, we
will make the changes needed as we stand stronger
together. We will address the areas we need to build
up, implement new and innovative ideas, and continue
to build on our rich legacy.
SwCC was, is, and will continue to be a rock in a
land populated by individuals in search of the Master's
hand. The leadership continues to secure and
guide us. The faculty and staff are teaching and mentoring
us. The students are listening to us. And our
supporters are behind us. As such, we are excited for
our promising future as we continue Standing Strong
Together.

REVENUE THROUGH STUDENT
RECRUITMENT
300 STUDENTS BY 2018
An educational non-profit organization should be able
to facilitate its operational expenses from the revenue
generated by its students and its qualifying government
subsidies.
Intentions:
Method:
Increase our Full-time Student Enrollment
(FTE) from 150 to 300 by
Fall 2017 and, subsequently, from
300 to 450 by Fall 2018. The FTE
includes On-campus and Online students.
Deployment of POPULI, our new
Campus Management System that
will enable us to:
1. Market, attract, enroll, and facilitate
the expectations of the millennial
technologically savvy and
prepared student base in the oncampus
and online environment.
2. Immensely expand and enhance
our online educational offerings.
3. Reach out to capture, service request
of, and electronically maintain
contact with former students,
alumni and constituents of the
institution.
Benefits: Upon securing a FTE base of 300
students, in addition to the doubling
of the tuition and fees revenue generated,
we will also re-secure the Title
III government grant of $500,000 per
year based on enrollment. Upon
achieving an FTE of 450 students, the
institution will receive $1,000,000
per year from the Title III enrollment
based grant.
Evans-Foster-Maxwell SwCC Scholarship Drive
Two Hundred Fifty Scholarships Planned for 2016-2017
By Dr. James Maxwell
Dr. Jack Evans, President Emeritus, Dr. Ben Foster,
VP for Student Affairs, and Dr. James Maxwell,
VP for Institutional Expansion, have committed themselves
to give of their time and finances to launch a
brotherhood initiative to provide 250 scholarships to
assist prospective students to attend Southwestern
Christian College, and current students to continue as
students. When we reach our goal of 250 scholarships,
the college will increase in enrollment from
150 students to 300 or more between 2016 and 2017.
Unfortunately, most of our students are not financially
able to attend the college, even many who want
to major in ministry. Most of our Christian colleges
have millions of dollars in scholarships, but SwCC
has only a few thousand dollars for scholarships.
Most of our Christian colleges’ total student costs are
thousands of dollars more than SwCC’s total student
costs. SwCC’s tuition, room, board and fees for one
full-time student is $6,481.94 per semester, and
$12,963.88 per year. Even the Pell Grant covers less
than half the amount students need for two semesters.
Dr. Evans, Dr. Ben Foster, and Dr. James Maxwell,
are giving $5,000 ($1,667 each) to activate the
scholarship fund. The Administration, faculty and
staff are encouraged to give sacrificially to this inspiring
initiative.
For those who decide to help us reach our goal,
there are several ways of approaching the type of
scholarships for SwCC.
♦
♦
♦
♦
You may personally form a scholarship in
your name or include other donors.
You may structure your scholarship as a
memorial for relatives or friends.
You may give a lump sum to cover several
years.
Or you may give enough to cover one to
five years.
♦
Also, you may provide suggestions as to
whom and how the funds will be distributed.
To keep the dream alive at SwCC, please send
your checks or money orders to Southwestern Christian
College, P. O. Box 10, Terrell, Texas, 75160-
9002. You may also pay by credit card. If you need
to call us for more information, feel free to call the
offices of Dr. Jack Evans, Sr., (972) 524-3341, ext.
122; Dr. Ben Foster, (972) 524-3341, ext. 107; or Dr.
James Maxwell, (972) 524-3341, ext. 144, or (214)
616-4728.
Those who provide scholarships will be recognized
in the Christian Echo, a special edition of the
SwCC Communiqué, and at the SwCC Lectureship in
November. Those who wish to remain anonymous
will be accommodated.

PAGE 8 THE SOUTHWESTERN CO MMUNIQUÉ’ OCTOBER-DECEMBER 2016
(Securing SwCC—Continued from page 2)
My story is only one of many. Each of us has our
own story with many more to be authored by future
students who will matriculate at Southwestern Christian
College.
Matthew 5:14-16 (GW) - You are light for the
world. A city cannot be hidden when it is located on
a hill. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket.
Instead, everyone who lights a lamp puts it on a
lamp stand. Then its light shines on everyone in the
house. In the same way let your light shine in front of
people. Then they will see the good that you do and
praise your Father in heaven.
The above biblical verses reveal how Christian
values and relationships exemplified at SwCC enhances
community development.
Conclusion
America and the world are blessed because of
Southwestern Christian College. In this world that
continues to shift and change, both negatively and
positively, it is good to know that God has preserved
our beloved Southwestern through all the shifts and
variations of our society. We must continue to position
her for future success and stability. This can only
be done through a unified effort of epic proportion. I
ask that we all gird up the loins of our minds to support
and secure Southwestern so that future generations
can share in the memories of the dream that was
realized in the fall of 1949.
Southwestern Christian College Receives Special Scholarship Endowments
Mildred Spencer
Mark Spencer
SwCC’s administration and staff salute Mark
Spencer, the son of Mildred Spencer, and faithful
member of the Roswell Avenue Church of Christ in
Kansas City, Kansas, for the largest scholarship gift,
$20,000, since the beginning of our current scholarship
campaign. Although sister Spencer is not able to
attend worship services as frequently as in her earlier
years, she has made and is now making a great impact
as an astute visionary to assist in mobilizing the
church to soar beyond the average commitment to a
higher calling. She was instrumental in spearheading
a senior organization at the Roswell congregation that
has influenced a national seniors initiative across the
USA.
Hervey. Marilyn was one of the original members of
the Roswell Avenue Church of Christ in Kansas City,
Kansas. The entire Hervey family has been actively
engaged in the work the church. Huey serves as the
minster of Evangelism, having baptized thousands
through the years, and is also an elder at the Roswell
church.
Marilyn, while she lived, was a dedicated wife
and mother and her dedication to Christ and His
church was unparalleled. One of her greatest contributions
was her professional expertise in music and
the way she used it to enhance the variety of songs in
church worship by teaching song leaders to understand
the notes of the songs.
Marilyn Patriece has demonstrated her professional
skills in various ways, especially through her
technology skills in providing excellent PowerPoint
presentations to enhance the effectiveness of sermonic
presentations of the ministers of the church.
determined to get a good education by enrolling at
Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas, to pursue
a degree in Pharmacy. Before her graduation, she
was so highly esteemed for her beauty, personality,
charm, and intelligence that she was selected as Miss
Homecoming.
Because of her many years of excellent service as
a retail pharmacist, Sandra was promoted to Computer
Order Productivity and works from her home,
serving thousands of patients in hospitals through
their own pharmacies.
Sandra decided to establish a memorial scholarship
in honor of the late Edgar Scott, who for many
years served as the beloved minister of the South Union
Church of Christ. Sandra’s spiritual life was
greatly impacted by Minister Scott. He also served on
the SwCC Board of Trustees for several years, and
was very dedicated and liberal toward the college.
Regretting that she has not been as financially
supportive of SwCC in the past, Sandra decided that
she would financially support the printing of our Lectureship
programs this year.
Mrs. Greer cherishes her membership with the
Palm Center Church of Christ in Houston, and she
speaks highly of Dwight Gibbs who serves as minister
to the congregation.
Sandra Greer
Edgar Scott
Marilyn Hervey
Southwestern Christian College lauds Marilyn
Patriece Hervey for her generous gift of $2,500 to
endow a scholarship fund in memory of her dear
mother, Marilyn Hervey, the deceased wife of Huey
Mrs. Sandra Greer has graciously provided
$5,000 to sponsor a scholarship for students, especially
Bible majors, to attend SwCC. Although she
was very reluctant to have her name mentioned, I convinced
her that her liberality may inspire others to be
more financially supportive of our college.
Mrs. Greer, who was reared in a large family with
meager resources, understands the needs of thousands
of students who were not born with a “silver spoon in
their mouths.” In spite of her circumstances, she was
