Florence Gordon Webster<br />

Loving mother, artist, tireless volunteer<br />

Florence Gordon Webster, a resident<br />

of Claremont for over 60 years, died on<br />

October 29, 2016. She was 102.<br />

A second-generation Californian, she<br />

was born on May 17, 1914 in San Rafael<br />

but did most of her growing up in San<br />

Diego with her parents and sister Helen.<br />

She met her husband Ralph following<br />

graduation from San Diego State College,<br />

where she studied teaching. Mr. Webster,<br />

director of materials for General Dynamics<br />

in Pomona, moved the family to<br />

Claremont in 1953. He died in 1975.<br />

Mrs. Webster lived in her house on<br />

West Tenth Street prior to moving to<br />

Claremont Manor in 2006. She was very<br />

active in civic activities as a member of<br />

the board of the American Red Cross and<br />

with Claremont High School parent volunteers,<br />

St. Ambrose Episcopal Church<br />

and PEO. She was an avid participant in<br />

the arts as a potter, painter and knitter.<br />

She was also a writer, having published a<br />

book of short stories and poems.<br />

“Florence inspired her family and<br />

friends with her generous and kind<br />

heart,” her family shared. “Her happiness<br />

was genuine and infectious. She loved<br />

everyone and was beloved by all who<br />

knew her.”<br />

She is survived by her children, Elizabeth<br />

Webster Haberman and husband<br />

Paul, of Bend, Oregon; Lawrence Webster<br />

and partner Caren Whiteside, of<br />

Claremont; Gerald Webster and wife<br />

Sharie, of Brea; and daughter-in-law<br />

Judy Webster (wife of Gordon Webster,<br />

who died in 2003), of Tucson, Arizona.<br />

She is also survived by four grandchildren<br />

and six great-grandchildren.<br />

There are plans for a family reunion<br />

and celebration of life in the near future.<br />

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be<br />

made to St. Ambrose Episcopal Church<br />

in Claremont.<br />

‘Turkey–An Evolving Nation’<br />

Having lived in Turkey from 1980 to 2014, Alison Stendahl<br />

experienced modern Turkish history first hand. Drawing from<br />

these insights, intensive research and continued connections<br />

with Turkish friends and colleagues, she will share her reflections<br />

on Turkey today.<br />

Her talk, titled “Turkey—An Evolving Nation,” will take<br />

place at the next meeting of the Pomona Valley United Nations<br />

Association at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 15 in the<br />

Napier Common at Pilgrim Place, 660 Avery Rd., Claremont.<br />

Ms. Stendahl lived for 34 years in Izmir and Istanbul, working<br />

as the academic dean and a math teacher at Uskudar American<br />

Academy and Izmir Collegiate Institute.<br />

Passionate about education, she has had a great deal of experience<br />

working within the Turkish educational system with<br />

Turks, Americans and Europeans. Her academic background<br />

is in math, education, history and theology.<br />

Post-election talk with the League<br />

of Women Voters<br />

Zachary <strong>Cour</strong>ser, research director of the Dreier Roundtable<br />

at Claremont McKenna Callege, will discuss “Election 2016:<br />

Will Washington Work Now?” at a Food for Thought public<br />

meeting, sponsored by the Claremont Area League of Women<br />

Voters.<br />

Mr. <strong>Cour</strong>ser taught political science courses at University<br />

of Virginia, Boston College and Sciences Po Lyon in France.<br />

He has published articles on the connection between political<br />

parties and democratic participation, and is a contributor and<br />

editor of the forthcoming volume, Parchment Barriers: Political<br />

Polarization and the Limits of Constitutional Order. He<br />

has experience working in Washington, DC on Capitol Hill,<br />

and is a regular political commentator on NPR affiliate<br />

KPCC’s “Air Talk” program in Los Angeles.<br />

to 4 p.m. in the Padua Room at Hughes Center, 1700 Danbury<br />

CHS grad joins ranks with the Los<br />

Angeles Police Department<br />

Matthew Nutt, CHS class of 2012, recently graduated from<br />

the LAPD Police Academy. Mr. Nutt enlisted in the United<br />

States Marine Corps July 23, 2012 and was promoted to Corporal<br />

in 2014. He spent seven months on the 31st Marine Expeditionary<br />

Unit out of Okinawa in 2013.<br />

After his four years of service, Mr. Nutt quickly became a recruit<br />

for the LAPD Police Academy. He was the class leader<br />

for 36 academy participants and received top honors for his<br />

physical fitness and dedication.<br />

Mr. Nutt assumed his duties for the LAPD on November 1.<br />

“Matthew wanted to be a police officer since he was seven<br />

years old,” his family shared. “We are very proud of his accomplishment.”<br />

Jacobs<br />

Mildred Spires Jacobs, a longtime<br />

Pomona Valley resident, died on October<br />

25, 2016. She was 99.<br />
