John’s Jottings
Good afternoon everyone, welcome to Woodstock.
Our visitors are Chatham Town. Welcome to their Players, Officials and supporters.
Our record against Chatham is a very good one. Last season we played them three
times. We won 1-0 in the league cup with a goal from Hicham Akhazzan, won 2-1 at
home in the league, our goals coming from Miles Cornwell and Jono Richardson and
drew 1-1 away, our goal scored by Hicham Akhazzan.
Last Tuesday we entertained Corinthian Casuals. We had to make an emergency signing
on the day as goalkeeper, Simon Overland was injured in the match in Guernsey.
Tunbridge Wells goalkeeper, Michal Czanner, came in and did an excellent job. This
was a thoroughly entertaining game that was end to end throughout. Corinthian Casuals
started off the more dangerous but after 19 minutes Tom Brunt scored as The Casuals
pushed too many men forward. This seemed to affect the visitors and Sittingbourne
came more into the game. Almost right on half time Joe Loft got a Second for the Brickies.
Early in the second half Stefan Wright did a rash challenge that saw the referee give
him a straight red card. After 56 minutes, diminutive centre forward, Jamie Byatt, the
smallest man on the pitch, headed a goal for Corinthian Casuals. It seemed that The
Casuals would now gain the upper hand and an equaliser would be just a matter of
time, however, Sittingbourne had other ideas and everybody dug in to preserve the lead
and gain three valuable points.
Our trip to Guernsey on the social front was as good as it always is. Their hospitality really
is second to none. On the pitch, we did not play well. We could not take advantage
of the Guernsey team being one of the poorest Guernsey squad we have played and
lost by 2 goals to 1. It could all have been different though if the referee had agreed with
his assistant who signalled for a penalty when Tom Carlse was seemingly bundled over
in the area. Unfortunately, the referee did not see it the same way and overruled the assistant.
How many of you recognised Dan Tanner when he signed for us recently? Dan originally
played for us in the 2005-2006 season when he was 18. Since that time, he has played
for Folkestone, Ashford and Ramsgate. It’s great to have him back!
We had our first £100 lottery draw at Tuesdays match. The ticket drawn out was owned
by Neil Cornelius. I have got to say I was very pleased that Southend based Neil won as
he is one of our staunchest supporters who rarely misses a match home or away. The
£100 draw will take place every month. In December we will have a first prize of £500 up
for grabs. If you are not a member of our lottery now is the time to join. See me or Peter
for an application form. Its only £1.00 a week to take part.
Next match for the Brickies is on Tuesday night when we make the short trip to Herne
Bay.

News from our division:
Godalming Town, who
we play shortly have appointed
a new manager
in Dean Thomas who
was previously manager
at Guildford City.
Folkestone Invicta continue
to “recruit” as they
have just signed Sam
Hasler from Herne Bay,
whilst Hythe Town have
signed Jay may from
Maidstone Utd—oh to
have a big budget!!
Hello Everybody
John has mentioned the new arrangements for the
club lottery and I do urge you to become a member
as its one of the lifelines of the club.
I just had to add a photograph to my piece taken at
an FA Cup game in 1950 between Tooting &
Mitcham Utd and Nottingham Forest., (not by our
advertiser Melvin Silcock!) Its amazing how football
was played in such conditions and even more amazing
to me that I remember those conditions!!
You may have noticed that we now have BT Sport in
the bar and after this afternoon’s game you will be
able to stay on and watch Chelsea v Everton 5.30,
And you could combine a late Sunday Lunch on the
6th to watch Arsenal v Spurs at noon!
On the pitch front we are now almost rid of the
moles that seem to enjoy being at Woodstock, my
suggestion was to trap them and release them at
Faversham’s ground (only joking Faversham!).
I’m sure it hasn’t escaped the statos amongst you
that around 45 minutes and 90 minutes have featured
heavily this season for us in both goals scored
(recently games against Guernsey (both for and
against!) ), Tonbridge Angels, Corinthian-Casuals,
Three Bridges, and Lewes. The moral of the story is
not to try and beat the crowd into the bar at half time
Peter

Chatham Town History
The club was formed in 1882 as Chatham United, when Rochester Invicta merged with the football team of the Royal
Engineers Band with the intention of creating a side that was capable of holding their own with the best in the
country. Harry Hobart's plan being to bring together all the best players in the Medway Towns in one team. They
played their first match on 7th October that year, beating Harley Street F.C. 4-0. Owing to their strong Army connections,
Chatham soon moved to a regular home on "The Lines", where they were to remain until 1889 - the beginning
of season 1889/90 seeing them move to "Alderman Winch's Enclosed Ground", or as it is now better known, the
Maidstone Road Ground.
Having been formed with an eye to competing in the F.A. Cup, they went on to reach the Quarter-Finals in 1888-89 -
famously defeating Nottingham Forest after two replays, only to lose to the holders West Bromwich Albion. This
game, which was played on "The Lines" where an admission fee could not be charged owing to Army regulations,
was instrumental in the decision by the Football Association that all future matches in the competition must be
played on fully enclosed grounds, where the visiting club would receive a share of the gate money.
In 1894 Chatham were founder members of both the Southern League and the original Kent League, becoming the
first winners of the latter competition. They were also winners of the Kent F.A. Badge in the three seasons it was
contested, and the first winners of its successor, the Kent Senior Cup, in 1888/89. They also became the first club
to win the Thames and Medway Combination, the direct predecessor of the present Kent League, in 1896/97.
Chatham were forced to resign from the Southern League during the 1900/01 season, owing to financial difficulties,
but they soon rebuilt the club - playing as Chatham Amateurs for a brief spell in 1901 - before winning both the Kent
League and Thames & Medway Combination in 1903/04 without losing a single game in either competition. They
repeated the feat the following season, losing just three games, whilst also defeating Sittingbourne 3-1 in the Final
of the Kent Senior Cup.
The First World War brought an end to football in the Medway Towns, but Chatham were one of the first clubs locally
to return to action in 1919 - winning both the Kent Victory Cup and the Chatham Charity Cup (for the eighth time)
in a shortened season. They briefly rejoined the Southern League in 1920/21, after the formation of a Third Division
for the Football League had taken half its' members, but once again withdrew at the end of the season finding that
the increased travel costs were a severe drain on finances.
They once again had some success in the F.A. Cup during the 1920s, reaching the Second Round Proper in
1926/27 before losing to Norwich City - who beat them again, this time in the First Round Proper in 1928/29. They
also reached the First Round Proper in 1925/26 and 1927/28, losing to Sittingbourne and Kettering Town respectively.
A third spell in the Southern League, starting in 1927/28 almost finished the club. They stuck it out for two seasons
this time, but once again the increased expenses - coupled with dwindling attendances - saw them drop back into
the Kent League. Things were to get progressively worse, and 1933/34 saw the club take voluntary relegation into
Division Two of the Kent League, which they won in 1934/35 without accepting promotion, before opting to revert to
Amateur status. Having played in both the Kent League and Kent Amateur League in 1938/39, they decided to play
in just the latter competition the following season - only to see all football suspended with the beginning of World
War Two. They played just one game that season, beating London Paper Mills 2-0 on 26th August - and would not
play again until 1946.
Post War, Chatham won the Premier Division of the Kent Amateur League in 1946/47, which was to be their last
honour under that name - having previously dropped the 'United' in 1898. On 7th January 1947 they merged with
Shorts F.C., the combined club taking the name Chatham Town at the request of the local Council, and a place in
Division One of the Kent League for the following season. There they were to remain until the League disbanded in
1959, whereupon they moved to the newly formed Aetolian League. During this latter period they appeared in the
Aetolian League Cup Final in each of the five seasons it was contested, though winning only once in 1962/63. The
following year they finally captured the League Championship, as well as the Aetolian/London League Cup and
then, when the Aetolian League formally merged with the London League they moved to the Metropolitan League,
in 1964/65, in search of stronger opposition.
Although the club were drawing crowds of up to 1,000 playing against strong Non-League opponents as well as
sides from Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United, they lost no time in returning to the Kent League
when it was reformed in 1968. Up until their return to the Southern League in 1983, they had won the Kent League
on four further occasions, completing the League and Cup double in both 1971/72 and 1977/78.
For a brief period during the seventies they changed their name to Medway F.C., again at the request of the local
Council, but happily reverted back to Chatham Town in 1979. In 1980 they achieved their biggest post-war success
to date in winning the Eastern Professional Floodlight League, playing against some of the strongest Non League
clubs of the day, including Maidstone United, and defeating Chelmsford City in the Final over two legs.
In 1983 Chatham returned to the Southern League for the fourth time, this time staying there until 1988, when having
failed to gain re-election they were relegated back to the Kent League - once again in severe financial difficulties,
with crowds often in double figures against poorly supported clubs, as opposed to the much healthier attendances
they had enjoyed in the Kent League against more local opposition.

The History of Chatham Town—Cont
After struggling during their first couple of seasons back in the Kent League, the real turnabout in the
clubs' fortunes came with the appointment of popular former player John Adams as First Team manager,
however despite reaching the Third Qualifying Round of the F.A. Cup in 1993/94, taking the club
to the Final of the Kent Senior Trophy in 1995/96 and finishing in the top three of the Kent League for
three successive seasons, he was dismissed by the club following a disastrous start to the 1996/97
season.
1997/98 was to prove one of the most difficult seasons in the club's history. Problems with a new
drainage system meant that only a handful of games could be played at Maidstone Road - which led to
a brief return to their "spiritual home" on the Lines, courtesy of the Royal Engineers, as well as a brief
ground-share with Gillingham at Priestfield Stadium. The club returned home for the 1998/99 season
under new manager Carl Laraman, fortunes improving immediately before in January Laraman left to
take up a coaching position at Charlton Athletic. His assistant, Steve Hearn, was appointed playermanager
and finally led the club to the Kent League Championship, and promotion to the Dr. Martens
League, in 2000/01.
The club enjoyed a good start to their first season back at this level, but a poor run of results at the end
of the season led to Steve Hearn's resignation and the appointment of his assistant Peter Coupland as
his successor. After a bad start to the 2003/04 season, Clive Walker replaced Coupland. Things improved
dramatically, and a season that had looked certain to end in relegation, ended instead with
Chatham in a mid-table position.
The 2004/05 season saw Chatham being placed in the newly formed Southern League Eastern Division.
The campaign got off to a promising start, with Chatham sitting as high as fourth in early October,
however a poor run of results coupled with Clive Walker's decision to return to his old club Dover Athletic,
saw the Chats slip to 16th. Assistant Steve Binks was appointed manager and results improved
towards the tail end of the season. Chatham finished the season in 11th place, and was Kent's highest
placed club.
Following yet another Pyramid reshuffle, the next few seasons saw the club ping-pong between the
Ryman League North and South Divisions with regular mid table positions. Frustratingly the club experienced
regular wins against top six and promoted sides but often followed up with defeats to bottom
six sides. Season 2006/07 saw Phil Miles - another popular former player - move up to take over as
Manager. December 2007 saw Phil stand down due to work commitments with Steve Binks taking
over the job again, then to be followed by 1 st team coach Alex O’ Brien stepping up for the 2009-10
campaign. Throughout this period the club's strong youth policy provided several new established first
team players and the club also achieved the coveted FA charter Standard award.
Season 2010-11 saw the club struggle on the pitch with Manager Paul Foley resigning in the final
weeks of the season with Player coach Kevin Watson taking over. After achieving some great results
Kevin was appointed to his first Managerial position at the age of 30. After four seasons Kevin resigned
to be replaced by Kevin Horlock in October 2015. Tony Beckingham then took over from Kevin
Horlock after a run of poor results, and in May 2016 ex Deal Town manager and part of the management
team at Cray Valley, Darren Anslow, who was the assistant manager, replaced Tony Beckingham
following a 7-1 defeat to Faversham Town and after a poor start to the new season. On the non
playing front new bar and boardroom facilities are now on stream.
On This Day
5 years ago, today, we drew 2-2 with Chipstead
at Bourne Park. Before the game there
was a minute’s silence for Les Rose who was a
long-standing supporter and helper at the club
who had passed away. Sittingbourne were keen
to arrest a poor sequence of form having suffered
4 defeats in a row. Sittingbourne soon settled
down though and took the lead on 23
minutes when Joe Goldsmith’s far post
cross was headed back across the goal by Jack
Hooper and Hicham Akhazzan latched on to the
ball and fired it past Martin Grant in the Chips
goal. Four minutes later Chips were back on
level terms when Sittingbourne keeper Matt
Reed seemed to be impeded by Tomson in the
area but in his exuberance to regain the ball he
dragged down the Chips striker to give away a
penalty. Jack Goodchild’s kick was pushed
away by Reed but only as far as Marcus Elliott
who crashed the ball into the net. Chips then
fortuitously took the lead when the ball struck
Ryan Cooper on the shoulder and Chips were
awarded a second penalty that Goodchild
tucked away. A point was earned though when
Bryan Glover stepped up to take a softly awarded
free kick
Team: Matt Reed, Ryan Cooper, Dan Palfrey,
Jerry Nnamani, Sam Groombridge, Bryan Glover,
Joe Goldsmith, Anthony Hogg, Hicham
Akhazzan, Cedric Abraham (Ellie Kayembe),
Jack Hooper (Ryan Golding). Subs not used:
10 years ago. On Saturday 4 th November
2006, we played Bath City in the FA Trophy 2 nd
Qualifying Round. Bath had a poor home record
but a great away record. Bath were packed with
ex League players and their keeper Paul Evans
even formed part of the South African 1998
world cup squad. Sittingbourne shaded the play
in the first half. However, Bath City had a strong
second half but still the Brickies came closest to
scoring when Andy Doerr shaved the post with
a header. In goal for the Brickies, Steve Williams
made some fine saves. Few chances in a
game that ended 0-0. I well remember the long
journey in very foggy conditions for the replay.
A match that was won 4-0 by Bath City.
Team: Steve Williams, Toby Ashmore, Joe
Dowley, Paul Ainsworth, Steve Searle, Kieran
Marsh, Lee Browning, Clint Gooding, Mark Lovell,
Andy Doerr, Mitchell Sherwood, subs:mKam
Singh, Matt Nicholl, Ricky Spiller, Charlie Belcher
and Lee Hockey
15 years ago. (4 th November) Sittingbourne
were in the Southern League. Mark Beeney had
been appointed manager one month previously.
He was not a happy man wrote Tony Rickson in
the East Kent Gazette. Sittingbourne had
played Fisher Athletic in the FA Trophy. Tony
felt that Clint Gooding, Andrew Drury and Paul
Campbell were instrumental in dominating the
game. But it all came to nothing as old Fisher
hand, Steve Portway’s theatrical dive was
enough for the referee to award Fisher a penalty.
Sittingbourne ad a bright start in this game
and Clint Gooding gave them the lead until
Portways dive that could have got him an Oscar.
From the penalty, onwards, Fisher played
with more belief, Sittingbourne with less, though
they could have won it in the second half when
they were generally on top but poor defending
after 75 minutes, when the unluck Drury left
clearing the ball t his defence allowed a Fisher
player to nip in and score. A third goal followed
in injury time.
Team: Hopper, John Guest, Davies, Neil Miller,
Cliff Cunnigham, Andy Drury, (King), Paul
Campbell, Clint Gooding, Tom Berry, Bradley
Spice (Russell), Hales. Subs not used: Ben
Alan Turvey trophy Round 2
Tonbridge Angels 2 Sittingbourne 0, att 260
That’s Sittingbourne’s fourth and final exit from this season’s cup competitions – and all before
the end of October.
This time it was the Ryman League Cup for the Alan Turvey Trophy, and the draw did them no
favours.
Away to a Tonbridge side who play a division higher, haven’t lost a home league game this season,
and deciding to take the competition seriously by fielding a full first team.
I thought Sittingbourne did really well, holding them to 1-0 for more than 90 minutes, and attacking
well though without carving out too many goal chances.
Former Chatham midfielder Joe Loft came in for his full debut, and Dan Tanner got a chance in
central defence with Danny Rumbol rested, while Hicham Akhazzan was restored at the last minute
in place of Josh Wisson.
In an even first half, Tonbridge went close when the experienced Elder headed wide, and Simon
Overland made a good save from Whitnell’s header, while at the other end Loft got on the end of
a very good Sittingbourne move only to see his shot blocked at the last second.
Sittingbourne, healthily cheered on by supporters who might have been fewer in number but were
a lot noisier than the home fans all night, were again indebted to Overton for an excellent save in
the 49th minute.
But when he made another instinctive block a minute later, the ball fell kindly for Phipp to ram it
home and give Tonbridge the lead.
With a penalty shoot-out beckoning if Sittingbourne could find an equaliser, they hit back well and
again it was Loft who got on the end of the best chance, only to clear the bar when Jordan Gallacher’s
cross reached him.
Tonbridge wrapped it up deep into injury time with a penalty by Allen after a foul by sub Jack Steventon,
back in action after a three-game suspension.
Sittingbourne: Simon Overland, Tom Brunt (Sam Welch, 84 min), Conrad Lee, Dan Tanner
(Jack Steventon, 81 min), Jono Richardson, Joe Loft, Hicham Akhazzan (Jake Embrey, 75 min),
Stefan Wright, Jordan Gallacher, Steven Ita, Tom Carlse. Sub not used: Danny Rumbol.
29th October 2016
Ryman League Div 1 South
Guernsey 2 Sittingbourne 1, att 677
Sittingbourne’s international career has yet to
take off after failing again to bring anything
home from the annual trip to Guernsey.
And that was disappointing, as Guernsey were
a different proposition to the three previous
years they’d been there and were short of players
because of injuries and seemed short of
confidence after a string of poor results.
Sittingbourne will point to a controversial 63rd
minute decision when they were awarded a
penalty and then had it taken away as the key
moment in their defeat.
But to be honest it wasn’t that great a performance,
although there are huge mitigating factors
in that for any bunch of players facing the
14-hour round trip required to play a match in
the Channel Islands.
This time there were no flight delays but it’s still
an early start, a long day, and lots of hanging
around – arriving at a ground two-and-a-half
hours before kick-off is hardly an ideal preparation.
Without the injured Hicham Akhazzan and Josh
Wisson, Sittingbourne recalled Danny Rumbol,
Sam Welch and Ricky Gundry into the team
that lost well in defeat at Tonbridge in the week
in the League Cup.
Guernsey, with only two wins behind them all
season, and with a teenage goalkeeper in for
their injured experienced first choice, made
plenty of mistakes in what turned out to be quite
a sloppy first half. They seemingly got caught
between playing it out from the back and hitting
it long and conceded possession in dangerous
areas. But Sittingbourne, who started slowly but
then began to build some momentum in the
middle of the half, couldn’t quite take advantage
of the half-chances on offer.
By far the closest they came was when Tom
Carlse got in a powerful header from a Gundry
cross in the 35th minute but it hit the inside of
the post and rolled across the goal before being
scrambled clear.
At the other end, Simon Overland made a couple
of impressive early saves and then Guernsey
hit the bar twice in 10 minutes, once just
shaving the top of it but the second time full on
after Overland had advanced from his line and
McGrath lobbed him.
Just when it looked as if the half would finish
goalless and both managers could have a
chance to re-programme their players,
Guernsey took the lead a minute into added
time. A clever diagonal pass split the defence
for Rihoy to comfortably score with a first
time shot.
The lead did wonders for Guernsey’s confidence
and in the second half they cut out the
mistakes and defended much better as Sittingbourne
began to wind up some pressure.
They looked certain to equalise on 63 minutes
when the assistant referee signalled a penalty
for a foul on Carlse and the referee seemed to
point to the spot.
Most of the Guernsey team, not to mention the
670-odd home fans in a crowd of 677, complained
bitterly and the referee eventually consulted
his assistant and reversed the decision.
It had been one of those challenges that outside
the area would have been a free-kick nine
times out of ten. Carlse dummied to go one
way, then turned to go the other, and collided
with a defender who had stood his ground.
If the referee deemed Carlse had dived, which
the crowd decided was the case and booed him
for the rest of the game, then presumably he
was wrong not to show him a yellow card for
simulation. It was all very strange.
For quite a lot of possession, Sittingbourne didn’t
create too much after that with Guernsey
happy to break out occasionally. And with Overland
limping badly after a 57th minute injury,
they got a second – their second goal of the
match in time added on – when sub De La
Mere was nicely set up, Sittingbourne manager
Nick Davis adamant a foul had been missed in
the build-up.
At least Sittingbourne kept going though it wasn’t
too much consolation when they finally
scored, in the fifth minute of added time, Steven
Ita, always their most dangerous attacking
threat, striking a low shot from outside the area
which was deflected past his own wrong-footed
keeper by a defender.
So back home via the return flight to Gatwick
after a third successive defeat on Guernsey. A
day out to remember, but not really for footballing
reasons on this occasion.
Sittingbourne: Simon Overland, Sam Welch,
Conrad Lee, Danny Rumbol (Yellow card) (Dan
Tanner, 85 min), Jono Richardson, Joe Loft
(Yellow card) (Jack Steventon, 79 min), Steven
Ita, Stefan Wright, Jordan Gallacher (Tom
Brunt, 75 min), Ricky Gundry, Tom Carlse.

HATS off to the 39 Eastleigh fans who made the 620-mile round trip to Barrow on
October 29.
If their 18-hour trek from the south coast to the north-east and back wasn’t gruelling
enough, TV chiefs declared they set off from Hampshire at around 3am after the
clash of the National League promotion seekers were chosen at BT Sport’s live
game, kicking off at 12.30pm.
While I totally understand and applaud the demand, need and importance of television
- especially when it brings interest and money to the Non-League game - I
can’t help but think that the decision to reschedule kick-off times was made without
any thought or consideration to the most important people in the whole process…
the fans.
That day, the sides lying first and second in the National League, Forest Green
Rovers and Dagenham & Redbridge, were locking horns at The New Lawn in, arguably,
the game of the season so far.
With a round trip of just under 300 miles - over half the distance - surely televising
this top-of-the-table clash would have made more sense? And if it really had to be
Barrow v Eastleigh – still a mouth-watering encounter I must add - why couldn’t it
be put back to the more preferable 5.30pm slot?
The plight of the Eastleigh fans got me thinking about my own early experiences as
a young reporter, covering my two local sides, Aldershot Town and Farnborough
Town.
As keen as enthusiastic as I was, I remember being in total awe of those supporters
who traipsed the length and breadth of the country every other week supporting
their team.
It wasn’t too bad for me. I had a free Press ticket waiting for me at the gate and my
expenses were covered upon my turn. But these dedicated die-hards gave up their
hard-earned time, effort and money for the cause - often for little reward - yet still
they would arrive home with smiles on their faces and start planning their next excursion.
Times are hard these days, and with the introduction of twitter, Facebook and club
websites, it would be very easy for fans to give their feet and wallets a rest and follow
their club’s fortunes in comfort behind a computer screen.
But, as we know, football fans are a rare breed –the magic of television will never
change that.
