Maritime sector contributes<br />

Dh26.9 billion to Dubai's GDP<br />

DUBAI: The maritime sector in Dubai<br />

continues to grow, contributing as<br />

much as Dh26.9 billion in the<br />

e m i r a t e ' s G D P i n 2 0 1 5 , t h e<br />

government disclosed.<br />

Shipping had the largest share,<br />

followed by ports, maritime<br />

engineering, and maritime support<br />

services.<br />

Dubai Customs said the industry<br />

grew by as much as 25 percent<br />

between 2011 and 2015, highlighting<br />

the emirate's success in becoming<br />

one of the most globally competitive<br />

maritime centers in the world.<br />

H.E. Sultan Bin Sulayem, Chairman of<br />

Dubai Ports, Customs and Free Zone<br />

Corporation and President of the<br />

Dubai Maritime City Authority, said:<br />

“The maritime industry<br />

was among the five major<br />

sectors that positively<br />

impacted the economic<br />

growth of the emirate in<br />

2015.”<br />

He said their office will<br />

continue “to develop and<br />

implement strategic<br />

initiatives centered on<br />

nurturing a maritime<br />

environment that attracts<br />

leaders of maritime<br />

industries all over the<br />

world.”<br />

of the Dubai Maritime City Authority,<br />

Norway-based Menon<br />

Group for Business Economics predicts Dubai will rank 7th among the world's<br />

best maritime capitals by 2020, outperforming London, New York, Tokyo,<br />

Copenhagen, and Rio de Janeiro.
