IPSWICH – Wouldn’t it be great if there was
a library of recordings by our ancestors, telling
stories about their lives, dreams and travails?
Obviously it is not possible to go back in time
carrying a tape recorder to talk with those who
helped build this country. But it is not too late
to record stories from parents and grandparents
that can be preserved for future generations.
That was the award-winning, widely
recognized idea Dave Isay had when he founded
StoryCorps. He set up a recording booth in
Grand Central Station in New York City, NY
and began recording personal stories. Those
stories are being captured for future generations
to enjoy and historians to study at the American
Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.
For Ipswich’s annual First Period Homes
celebration, Kerrie Bates, director of the town’s
Recreation and Culture Department, has
brought Isay’s idea to this town. She is setting
up a recording booth at the Hall Haskell House
REGIONAL – Since August, outdoor
watering has been banned throughout
the North Shore as every city and town in
northeast Massachusetts ordered no outdoor
watering and urged residents to conserve
water in any way possible.
With recent rains, the drought has eased
slightly, and the city of Amesbury last week
lifted the ban entirely. Other towns and cities
say they will probably not end the ban until
January when the state is expected to declare
that the current drought has ended.
The Ipswich Water Department issued a
stern warning in August: “It is imperative that
demand drop to winter levels immediately
in order to ensure the Water Department
can continue to meet basic domestic and
firefighting needs. Please help reduce townwide
water use by 200,000 gallons per
day. All outdoor watering must stop and
customers should limit non-essential indoor
Gallery to record first-hand stories.
Between Nov. 15 and 27, residents of Ipswich
and surrounding North Shore communities are
invited to record their stories in a real studio
erected inside the Hall Haskell House Gallery,
the town’s visitor center.
The studio will be staffed with volunteers to
assist with the recordings.
Bates offered the opportunity for families to
record stories last year during the celebration of
First Period homes. This year, she is expanding
the program as part of the national StoryCorps
initiative, called the Great Thanksgiving
Listen.
“The Great Thanksgiving Listen is a national
education project that empowers high school
students to create an oral history of the
contemporary U.S. by recording an interview
with an elder over Thanksgiving weekend,”
StoryCore’s web site states.
water use.”
The Newburyport Department of Public
Services’ water division banned automatic
sprinklers and filling pools. The city has not
watered parks or allowed any non-essential
use of fire hydrants. The fines range from
$50 to $100, and there is a threat that if these
restrictions don’t work, “more restrictive
measures may be imposed.”
The town of Rowley web site asked “for
your continued effort with conserving
water.”
Amesbury Mayor Ken Gray ordered the
outdoor watering ban lifted because, “The
recent rains have restored Tuxbury Pond
and the Powow River to normal condition.
This alleviates the need for water use
restrictions.”
The town of Ipswich made a contest out
of the drought, asking town employees and
The Town Common Courtesy Photo
Mass Audubon’s Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary in Topsfield will
hold its annual Big Woods Hike on Sunday, November 20. Bring
family and friends for a two-hour naturalist-guided walk to discover
the natural and cultural history of the sanctuary. This wonderful
program is appropriate for adults as well as families (children should
be at least 5 years old). Walks will depart at 11:30 a.m., 11:45, noon,
12:15, 12:30, 12:45, and 1:00 p.m. Discover sites of former dwellings,
hear stories of the people who settled this area 200 years ago, and
learn about what is happening in the world of nature as plants and
animals prepare for winter. The walk will meander along the edges
of marshes and ponds, through deciduous woodlands, and the old
growth forest of Averill’s Island, featuring towering hemlocks and red
pines. Warm up by the woodstove back in the Barn, where hot drinks,
homemade soup, and desserts will be available for purchase. Advance
registration is required. Runs rain or shine, so dress for the weather
and wear sturdy footwear. FEE: $9/adults, $8/children (discount for
“In addition to using the Hall
App.
Interviews will be entered
into the StoryCorps archive at
the Library of Congress and
on StoryCorps.me where they
become an invaluable resource
for future historians and provide
families with a priceless piece of
personal history,” the web site
states.
Last year, its pilot year for
the program, thousands of
high schools from all 50 states
participated and preserved over
50,500 individual recordings at
the Library of Congress.
“Thanksgiving is when cross
generations of families come
together, when our pressing
schedules seem to allow us time
to formalize the story telling
tradition,” Bates said.
StoryCorps is a way for
individuals to connect in a
meaningful way with those close
to them, and to gain insight into
the lives of others. It is a global
platform for listening, connecting,
residents for suggestions on how
to save water and awarding points
for the most innovative ideas.
Points are awarded for the best
suggestions, and on the town’s
web site, there is a leader board
for the contest.
The points are only for
“bragging rights,” said town
director of Recreation and
Culture Kerry Bates.
Ipswich residents have
offered up some tried and true
suggestions, such as flush toilets
only when necessary, particularly
for older toilets that use up to
7 gallons, as opposed to newer
toilets that use less than 5 gallons.
That idea won Deb (no last name
listed) 50 points.
Another suggestion from Kerry
Mackin is to place a bucket in
the shower to capture water that
can be used for cleaning, flushing
or watering plants. She also
suggested, “Keep a pot or bowl in
the sinks to capture water from
washing fruits and vegetables,
hand-washing, etc. and use
the water to water plants. That
suggestion won Ms. Mackin 10
points.
She earned another 10 points
by offering gardening tips from
the Ipswich Garden Club blog.
Suzanne Benfield won 30 points
with the suggestion that one
could clean kitchen countertops
with a plant based cleaner and
She also offered: “When washing
dishes and/or lathering in the
bathroom, the less soap used the
more water saved from rinsing.”
Assistant Town Manager
Jennifer Breaker earned 23 points
on the suggestion that households
can identify and fix leaks. “Small
household leaks can add up to
gallons of water lost every day.
Try the drip calculator to see how
much water is being wasted.”
Paula Jones won 17 points,
proposing that a sink strainer
eliminates the need to run
water for the garbage disposal.
“We empty it into our curbside
compost receptacle.”
Stephen proposed that the town
offer water saving programs and
incentives. “A program similar to
what the MWRA offers should
be created to provide free water
saving audits for homeowners.
Energy providers across the state
offer this to electricity and natural
gas customers to help save energy,
why not do this for water? No
That answer to the drought
brought Stephen 5 points.
Bates had a couple of off-thewall
suggestions that earned her
the town’s top ranking with 69
points.
Her first suggestion was that
plates could be cleaned by letting
your dog lick the plates clean
after human finish eating and
before washing. “Pots & pans too!
Woof, woof. Water is precious.
(Idea contributed by Charlotte
the dog, typed by her human.)”
Bates’ second suggestion,
attributed to an overheard
conversation at a Rotary Club
luncheon, was that a household
could save water by showering
“with a friend.”
FOOD FIGHT: INSIDE THE
BATTLE FOR MARKET
BASKET
Join us for a screening of the
documentary Food Fight: Inside
the Battle for Market Basket.
Throughout the summer of 2014,
a corporate food fight played
out in dozens of communities
impacting tens of thousands of
workers and the economies of
three states. When the faction of
the Market Basket board headed
by Arthur S. Demoulas fired his
cousin and arch-rival Arthur T.
Demoulas as long-time CEO of
the successful supermarket chain,
it set off a firestorm that sparked
one of most unique corporate
dramas in American history.
It’s what the New York Times
called “the last stand for the
middle class.” FOOD FIGHT
is the story of the battle to save
Market Basket, and about the
power of ordinary, passionate
people to rewrite corporate
history. November 10, 6:30PM,
IPSWICH - Ipswich Rotary will be collecting new socks, hats and gloves to help the homeless this
winter. All donated items will be given to the Starlight Ministries in Boston. This drive is part of the
club’s “Homeless and Hunger Initiative”. Between now and November 15th, you can make donations
at the following Ipswich locations: First Ipswich Bank – 31 Market St, Mark Warner’s Martial Arts
Academy – 43 Market St, TD Bank – 23 Market Street, Ipswich. Hats and Gloves are always needed
to stay warm. BUT WHY COLLECT SOCKS FOR THE HOMELESS? Clothing donations to the
homeless rarely include socks. When asking homeless service organizations: What do you need the
most? The answer consistently is … Socks. Clean, dry socks are important to good health. Members
of the homeless population spend most of their time walking from place to place, frequently with
inadequate socks and poorly fitting shoes. Health conditions like diabetes, prevalent in the homeless
population, can further complicate the danger of poor foot care to include skin ulcers, infections and
even tissue death.
LOCAL POTTERY ARTIST SHOW & SALE
Local Artists Draw You into Their World
Purple Sage Pottery Annual Fall Open House and Sale. This has
been a popular event for many years. There will be an abundance
of decorative and functional pottery and sculpture for sale made
by thirteen local clay artists.
Discover this humble art studio with kiln tucked just off route 110 in
downtown Merrimac where creations from multiple artists will be on
display for sale, each with distinct styles and personalities, perfect for daily use. Attending a Purple
Sage Pottery open house and sale is a wonderful and memorable experience.
It’s hard to decide whether most of the items on display are more art or more housewares. While
some pottery items serve only an ornamental function, most have elements of both. A few comments
Greg Der Bogosian
Town Common
from past visitors are: ‘’I will never again be satisfied by bringing out my old commercial dishes at
mealtime’’, and ‘’there is something special about a handmade creation
that carries extra life and personality with it.’’
There will be a kiln opening on Saturday morning, demonstrations throughout
the show and light refreshments. Perfect for children and all ages alike.
The studio is located at 3 Mechanic Street in Merrimac, MA and will be open
to the public from 10am to 5pm Saturday, November 12th, and from 12pm
Weekly Community Newspape
to 5pm Sunday, November 13th. For more information about Purple Sage
SALISBURY - For many, Thanksgiving is a day when families and
friends gather and give thanks over a special meal. However, for those
struggling to make ends meet, it can be an especially difficult time.
To help clients in the nine local communities it serves, Pettengill
House is now accepting community food drives and market gift
card donations to support our Annual Thanksgiving Meals Basket
Program which will be held on Friday, November 18th. In addition
to food drives of non-perishable items, we are kindly requesting
donors consider donating gift cards to local markets to assist us
with the purchase of perishable Thanksgiving meal “fixings”. The
following items are currently “most needed” for Thanksgiving meals
baskets: boxed stuffing, canned gravy, canned vegetables, canned
fruit, baking goods and condiments. Thanksgiving donations are
greatly appreciated and best if received by Monday Nov 14th.
Additional “most needed” items for our weekly food pantry include
children’s healthy lunch box snacks and toiletries/personal care
items. If you are interested in organizing a Thanksgiving food drive
for The Pettengill House, please contact Richard Henderson, Food
Pantry Program Coordinator, at Rhenderson@pettengillhouse.org
or call Richard at (978) 463-8801 ext. 1 for more information and
to schedule a drop-off time. We kindly request your assistance
checking “best by” dates, sorting items into boxes that one person
can lift, and bringing enough people to assist with unloading. As
always, monetary donations are greatly appreciated. Please make
checks payable to: The Pettengill House, Inc. P.O. Box 5551, 13
Dental Insurance Update - Part 2
cleaned a couple of times a year.
The only way purchasing your own
insurance may make sense is if you
are looking to cover your entire
family. You should discuss these
factors with your dental office prior
to making the decision.
In dentistry, there are a few types
of dental insurance available. There
is “indemnity” insurance, where
patients can go to whoever they
want and the insurance will cover
a certain percentage depending on
the procedure. The other types of
insurance are PPO’s, HMO’s and
discount plans or “clubs”. With
these types of insurance, the dentist
has to sign a contract with the
insurance company and abide by
a pre-set limit they can charge for
all procedures. The typical question
a dental office gets with regards
to these types of insurance plans
is, “Why don’t you accept XYZ
insurance?”
Most dental offices are small
businesses, and the decision for the
dentist to sign-up for a particular
plan depends on whether they
feel they can maintain the quality
of care they seek, or were trained
to provide, while still being able
to cover their expenses to run a
business. What corners have to be
cut to make this work?
Large corporate dental offices
take many of the discounted dental
plans that smaller dental offices
don’t or can’t take. The business
model is different in many ways.
Unfortunately, many patients
Senior Scene
of Coverage. (All the plans are
required to send these.) Read the
forms carefully. If changes to your
plan are anticipated for 2017, such
as out-of-pocket costs, this is where
you’ll learn what those will be.
To see what other plans offer,
go online to ww.medicare.gov and
compare what you have to what
else is available.
To review plans in your area,
put “plan finder” in the search
box. Put your ZIP code in the box.
Enter any drugs you take, and your
current pharmacy. When you get to
the screen with your plan options,
your best bet is to click on Sort
by Overall Star Rating. Compare
the annual drug costs, monthly
feel forced to choose a dental
office based on their insurance vs.
choosing the provider.
Continuing education is
important for dentists to improve
skills and to be able to provide
patients with a high level of service.
The amount of continuing education
a dentist takes is generally related to
the resources available from running
the business. Although the type of
dental insurance a dental office
accepts does not always translate
into the level of care provided, it is
an important factor for the patient
to consider.
It is difficult not to get caught
in the trap of – I don’t go to the
dentist because I don’t have
insurance or my insurance only lets
me go to a specific dental office.
People often have the mindset that
dental insurance works the same as
medical insurance. It does not.
This is your health. Advocate
for yourself and choose to get and
stay healthy. There are many things
competing for your discretionary
dollars. Your dental health should
be high on the list, but the conscious
choice must be made by you.
CAT IN THE CRADLE
The Cat in the Cradle
Coffeehouse welcomes Quentin
Callawaert back on November
12. If you close your eyes and
listen, the image in your mind is
not of a young happy teenager,
but rather one of a very skilled
(and happy!) musician. Open
your eyes and enjoy the warmth
and talent of a gifted guitar
player who combines classical,
traditional, contemporary and
popular music with original
tunes. He has shared the stage
with many other great guitarists
and in the few short years that we
have known him he has moved
on from being an entertaining,
gangly teen to a composed,
professional musician. This is
an exciting journey for Quentin
and for those of us fortunate
enough to hear this great young
talent. Sharing the bill is Toeldo,
another group of put -together
young musicians. Daniel Alvarez
and Jordan Dunn-Pilz have been
writing music together since
2009. Now, accompanied by
Harry Burr and Pedro Calloni,
the duo spearheads Toeldo,
an independent indie folk
group based out of the Boston
music scene. Blending their
singer/songwriter roots with a
contemporary folk sound, this
young group presents a mature
understanding of the genre.
Intricate finger picking, pulsating
drums, and swelling horns fill
your soul with sound. The Cat in
SONGS AND STORIES
FROM THE WAR YEARS
Seventy-five years ago this
country entered World War
II, and people of all ages love
the music from the era, 1941-
1945. On Tuesday, November
15, 2016, the Hampton Falls
Free Library will host Songs
and Stories from the War Years
presented by Richard Kruppa.
This entertaining and informative
program, which begins at 6:30
p.m. focuses on some of the most
beloved songs from that era such
as “Bluebirds over the White
Cliffs of Dover,” “Sentimental
Journey,” and “Praise the Lord
and Pass the Ammunition.”
Richard not only sings the songs,
accompanying himself on guitar,
5-string banjo, and baritone
ukulele, but he also tells their
fascinating and unfamiliar stories,
their meanings, their history,
and their significance. Richard
asks interesting and thoughtprovoking
questions such as
“What popular song was written
in response to the bombing of
Pearl Harbor?” “What song was
MASSACRE ON THE
MERRIMACK
Early on March 15, 1697 a
band of Abenaki warriors raided
the English frontier village
of Haverhill, Massachusetts.
Striking swiftly, the Native
Americans killed twenty-seven
men, women, and children, and
took thirteen captives, including
39-year-old Hannah Duston and
her week-old daughter, Martha.
A short distance from the village,
one of the warriors murdered the
squalling infant. Duston vowed
to get revenge. Two weeks into
her captivity, Duston and her
companions moved among the
sleeping Abenaki with tomahawks
and knives, killing two men,
two women, and six children
and the others escaped down
the Merrimack River in a stolen
canoe. They braved treacherous
waters and the constant threat
of attack, returning to tell their
story and collect a bounty for
the scalps. Was Hannah Duston
