The
Chesapeake
Bay
The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary
in the United States. Spanning
200 miles, the Bay is surrounded by
Maryland and Virginia. The Chesapeake
Bay was formed over 10,000 years ago
when melting glacial ice caused sea
levels to rise in the Atlantic Ocean. The
bay was known as Chesepiooc meaning
“Great Shellfish Bay” by the Algonquin
Indians. The bay is mostly known for
its great seafood production, especially
blue crabs, clams and oysters.
Baltimore’s Inner Harbor has thrived following
a massive urban renewal project
that began in the 1970’s. It is now
a vibrant waterfront area featuring the
glass enclosed market of Harborplace,
the National Aquarium, the US Constellation,
the Maryland Science Museum
and Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
In addition, the Fells Pont neighborhood,
one of the nation’s oldest maritime
communities has been designated
as a National Historic District. Fells
Point was the hub of the nation’s shipbuilding
industry in the late 1700’s and
early 1800’s. While visiting, notice the
350 original structures including housing
shops, galleries, pubs and restaurants.
Visit Little Italy, located between
the Inner Harbor and Fells Point and be
sure to experience the great Italian food
at one of its many restaurants.
While visiting the Bay, be sure to take
a ride on the water taxi which connects
Baltimore’s attractions and is the best
way to get around. The taxi stops at the
Aquarium, Harborplace, the Maryland
Choosing a healthy diet for your
pet is easier than you think!
Choosing your pet’s food can be so difficult
with the endless brands and flavor varieties
lining the supermarket and big box shelves.
It’s easy to trust the pet food companies with
their persuasive commercials, fancy packaging
and expensive marketing campaigns.
Unfortunately in most cases these companies
are more concerned with profit than they are
with the health of our pets. In a world full of
recalls, we have become extremely selective
about the brands of food we carry. We’ve
come up with some guidelines that we’d like
to share with you that we think everyone can
follow to find a healthy, affordable food for
your pet.
At Clipper’s Canine Cafe, we always look for
foods that contain superior sources of highquality
whole meat listed in the first few ingredients.
Animal proteins are more digestible
and palatable than plant proteins so we reject
foods that would list ingredients such as corn
or corn gluten meal as a first ingredient. We
do not carry foods with fats or proteins that are
not identified by species such as animal fat,
meat and bone meal or poultry by-products.
Unfortunately there’s no telling where those ingredients
could potentially come from. What
a scary thought! We look for foods with whole
grains like brown rice or ground oats rather
than grain fragments such as brewer’s rice,
rice gluten or rice flour. We avoid all foods with
artificial colors which are simply added for the
owners benefit. Artificial sweeteners such as
corn syrup, sucrose or ammoniated glycyrrhizin
are sometimes added to low-quality foods
to make them more appealing to you pup
but just like sugary foods for humans, they can
lead to diabetes and other health problems
for Fido. We do not carry any foods containing
artificial preservatives including Ethoxyquin,
BHA and BHT which are toxic chemicals
that have either been banned or are heavily
regulated in food for humans because they
have been proven to be carcinogenic. Our
foods are naturally preserved with mixed tocopherols
such as vitamin E and herbs such
as rosemary. We carry foods that are made
by companies that give full disclosure about
their manufacturing plant, ingredients and ingredient
sourcing.
We can always provide you with pet food
comparisons to see how the food you’re currently
feeding measures up and point out
any problem ingredients. If you’re interested
in switching your pets to a high quality all
natural food, stop in for some free samples
and product information. We’d be more than
happy to help your pet make a smooth transition
to a healthier lifestyle.
At Clipper’s Canine Cafe, we pride ourselves
in our knowledge of pet nutrition and great
customer service. Whether we need to stay
open a bit late for a customer tied up in traffic,
print articles and help a customer research
their pet’s dietary concerns, or cry with them
when it’s time to let a pet go, our customers
are like family to us. We offer a curbside carryout
service, military discount and frequent
buyer program where you earn FREE bags of
food. We also have a new program called
our VeRUS for Veterans Round-Up Program.
When making your purchase you can opt
to “Round-Up” your purchase to the next full
dollar. The proceeds will be donated back to
VeRUS for Veterans to train dogs to be service
and therapy animals for our Veterans.
We feel it’s so important to support our military
and we also think its important to support our
local small businesses. We hope you feel the
same way! Did you know that for every $100
spent in independently owned stores, $68 returns
to the community through taxes, payroll
and other expenditures? In a national chain
store (like Petco or PetSmart), only $42 stays
here. If you spend it online nothing comes
home.
Need Help Finding A Healthy All Natural
Pet Food To Fit Your Budget?
YOU COULD BE SPENDING TOO MUCH MONEY AT YOUR LOCAL BIG BOX STORE FOR A POOR QUALITY FOOD!
Because Clipper’s Canine Cafe sells only high quality all natural pet foods, customers often assume that all of the foods we
carry are out of their price range or more expensive than what they can find in their grocery store or big box pet store.
This couldn’t be further from the truth! We have lots of much healthier alternatives to fit every budget! Here’s a great
comparison:
PURINA ONE
CHICKEN & RICE DRY
DOG FOOD
Main protein source is corn which is a cheap
filler ingredient and considered highly
allergenic for pets.
Contains poultry by-product meal which is a
low quality, low nutrient, cheap ingredient
that may contain parts such as necks, feet,
undeveloped eggs and intestines from ducks,
geese, turkeys, buzzards, chickens or other
undisclosed poultry.
Contains animal fat which is a generic byproduct
of rendering. Because no specific
animal is named it could potentially come
from diseased cattle, slaughterhouse waste,
restaurant grease or even euthanized pets.
Contains animal digest which is the result of
undecomposed animal tissue that can be
obtained from any source with no control in
place for quality or contamination. Any kind of
animal can be included such as goats, pigs,
horses, rats, shelter animals, etc. that are
dead, diseased, disabled or dying prior to
slaughter. This is sprayed on lower-quality
foods lacking good-tasting ingredients to give
the food some palatability.
Contains Menadione which has not been
approved for long term use and has been
banned for human consumption by the FDA
due to serious side effects and high toxicity.
Feeding guidelines recommend you feed 3 cups
for a 50 pound dog.
Costs an average of $1.57 per pound.
orange-colored fruits and vegetables promote
eye health and protect vision, and it’s true:
Beta-carotene, a type of vitamin A that gives
these foods their orange hue, helps the retina
and other parts of the eye to function smoothly.
But eating your way to good eyesight isn’t only
about beta-carotene. Though their connection
to vision isn’t as well-known, several other
vitamins and minerals are essential for healthy
eyes. Make these five foods a staple of your
diet to keep your peepers in tip-top shape.
Leafy Greens:
They’re packed with lutein
and zeaxanthin antioxidants
that, studies show,
lower the risk of developing
macular degeneration
and cataracts.
Citrus and berries:
These fruits are powerhouses of vitamin C,
which has been shown to reduce the risk of developing
macular degeneration and cataracts.
Fatty fish:
Tuna, salmon, mackerel, anchovies and trout
are rich in DHA, a fatty acid found in your retina—low
levels of which have been linked to
dry eye syndrome.
Should I
Buy Organic?
There has been an explosion in the marketing
and availability of organic foods over the over
the past few years, so it’s certainly no wonder
that one of the most common questions is
“should I buy organic?” Here are the facts based
on the best science to date:
Choosing organic is clearly better for the
environment.
This is demonstrable and occurs through numerous
channels, including conservation of natural
resources and less pollution for our water and
soils.
Consuming organic foods reduces the
body’s exposure to pesticides.
This has been confirmed through numerous
scientific studies. Adults and children who consume
organic foods have measurably lower
levels of pesticides in their bodies. Perhaps the
bigger question here is – “Are the levels of pesticide
exposure received from eating conventional
foods harmful to our health?” At this point
in science, we simply do not have the data to
definitively answer this question. Pesticides approved
for use are reported to be safe at or below
certain threshold levels. It is clear however
that pesticides are harmful to exposed farm
workers, along with “non-target” wildlife and are
definitely not healthy substances.
For children there are two additional caveats to
consider on the safety front. Because children
consume more food calories per unit of body
weight and because their cells are dividing at a
much more rapid rate, they are at greater risk for
potential toxic effects from pesticide exposure
(a developing fetus is at the greatest risk). Additionally,
it is common for some kids to have
very restrictive eating patterns with consumption
of only one or a few types of fruits or vegetables
on a regular basis. If this is the case, they will experience
a greater number of exposures to the
same pesticides which can also exacerbate risk.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a notfor-profit
research organization devoted to improving
public health and the environment, has
determined that the produce that consistently
has the highest pesticide levels include: apples,
bell peppers, celery, cherries, grapes (imported),
nectarines, peaches, pears, potatoes, red
raspberries, strawberries, and spinach. Choosing
organic for this group of produce will give
you and your family the greatest reduction in
pesticide exposure. Spinach, strawberries, and
celery are the worst of the bunch.
Organic foods may or may not be more
nutritious than their conventional counterparts.
Some scientific studies show conventional foods
are just as nutritious, while others support the contrary.
Based on my knowledge of the available
data, the scale tips slightly in favor of a superior
nutritional profile for organic varieties. Organics
generally have a bit higher mineral content because
of the more stringent soil requirements for
organic certification and in some cases, have
a more robust supply of protective antioxidants.
Organic foods may or may not taste better.
Blinded taste studies are basically a wash. For
those that think organic tastes better there are
an equal number who find the conventional
counterpart tastier.
Organic foods will generally spoil more
quickly.
Pesticides clearly extend the shelf life and “freshness”
of foods. For optimal freshness, organic
foods need to be consumed more quickly.
Organic foods are more expensive.
You will generally pay about 20% more for organic
varieties.
The answer is a complicated one and ultimately
depends on your feelings towards the environment,
pesticide, and your pocketbook.
