“At Saint John’s, I experienced a lot of new things
and met a lot of new people. My English has gotten
better, and I learned a lot about the world from the
international students here. I also learned about life
in the United States from the American students.”
“I loved being just a train ride away from my
favorite city. I made great memories, spent a lot
of time with my friends and visited beautiful and
exciting places. I also had a great host family who
supported me with everything and who made me
feel comfortable coming home any time.”
VANESSA DUBBEL
HAMBURG, GERMANY
VIENNA, AUSTRIA
Hi, my name is Fiona Hadek, and I am 17 years old.
I’m from Vienna, Austria.
My life goal is to experience as much as
possible and to be open to different cultures.
Basically, I want to see the world in all its
colorful shades. This is why I chose to study
abroad for a semester. I wanted to compare
the education system from my home country to
that of another’s. I was
also intrigued by how
education and society
can influence each
other.
I decided to study
in the United States
of America because
I had a great experience with my family here
when we visited California. My family and I really
liked the unique culture.
Sometimes, adjusting to the lifestyle in another
country can be difficult. There are many
differences between the rules of Vienna and
the rules of New York. However, my experience
“I specifically chose Saint John’s
because it is very close to New
York City. At the same time, it’s
right near many beaches!”
in the UTP Exchange Program has helped me
to learn how to adjust to my surroundings in a
positive way.
What impressed me the most were the teachers
at Saint John’s High School. They took the time
to explain complex ideas to me and did not
mind teaching me
over and over again.
They are also willing to
go above and beyond
by staying after school
and offering extra
help when students
need it.
Overall, my favorite experiences with UTP were
the trips to New York City with the new friends I
made from countries all around the world. Also,
the food here is unlike anywhere else because
you can eat food from any country at any time!
“My favorite experience from the Exchange Program
was meeting people from all over the world and
making friends from different countries and cultures.
I loved hanging out with them and visiting different
towns, especially going to Manhattan. I made
friends that will stay with me for the rest of my life!”
“My favorite experience from the Exchange
Program was being in New York City for the first
time. It was like a dream come true, and I got to
see many places I recognized from films
and videos!”
Support Services
Pre-Arrival Scheduling
Whether you are pursuing your high school
diploma or spending a semester or year as an
exchange student, it is best for you to know
in advance what you will be studying at Saint
John’s. The UTP team will arrange pre-arrival
interviews and testing, either in-person in your
country or via Skype, to ensure that you can
make the most of the courses offered.
Arrival Pickup Management
and Transportation Services
From the moment you arrive in the United
States, our UTP team will ensure that your
transportation needs are met. We will arrange
airport pickup and transfer to your homestay.
Throughout your program, the UTP team
works together with the school and your host
family to be sure transportation is provided to
and from school.
Orientation
International students will join Saint John’s
students in their regular orientation activities.
However, the UTP team will organize a special
orientation for international students, including
important information sessions. There will also
be fun activities to help you feel right at home
from the moment you arrive.
Day-to-Day Support
Studying in another country brings challenges
beyond just the language barrier. The UTP
office is the information point for all international
students at Saint John’s. Our Student Services
team is physically present on a daily basis at
the Saint John’s campus. Their primary role is
to help students communicate with teachers,
administration and their host families about any
day-to-day concerns.
Advising
The UTP team works in conjunction with
all Saint John’s faculty to advise on how to
effectively work with international students.
This ensures that students do not miss out on
valuable academic resources and recreational
opportunities. We work hard to keep you
informed about what is current in the school.
Progress Reports
The UTP team will send periodic progress
reports back to each student’s parents, giving
them a sense of comfort. These reports are
a valuable resource, which allows parents
to see their sons and daughters progress
academically and socially while they are away
from home.
Insurance Plan
Our international students maintain adequate
health insurance coverage through IMG Global.
Students have 100% coverage in-network and
access to many options for U.S. healthcare
providers. UTP assists both host families and
students in finding the proper provider in any
given circumstance, as well as assistance with
all necessary claims after a visit to a medical
professional.
Global Ambassador Club
The Global Ambassador Club is a student
organization run by the UTP team at Saint
John’s High School. Club members are
American students who help international
students by organizing orientation and other
extracurricular activities. They also take part
in workshops in the Language Foundation
classes and support the international student
body where they can.
Tutor Matching
In addition to regular support from Saint John’s
teachers, students who have difficulty in a
particular subject may be matched with a peer
tutor. Peer tutors are typically members of the
Saint John’s National Honor Society (NHS)
and make themselves available after school
(Monday to Thursday). They mentor, advise
and instruct students on subjects in which they
excel. Located in the Student Library, students
are also able to utilize this resource during their
lunch and free periods. If a student requires
additional academic support, the UTP Student
Services team will be happy to help connect
students with one of the several experienced
tutors that work within our program.
Homestay Program
We have a large network of local host families
who take pride in welcoming international
students into their homes.The Homestay
Program is an exceptional opportunity for
international students to sharpen their English
language ability by immersing themselves
in daily conversations with typical American
families. Our Student Services team works
diligently to review each student application.
They then determine which of our host families
can best help integrate students comfortably
into American society. By matching our
students with the most compatible host
families, we ensure they have a comfortable
and safe home-environment in which they can
succeed both academically and socially.

American
Experience
Program
The American Experience Program was created to give international
students the opportunity to explore first-hand American life and
culture. With so much to learn, and what feels like such little time, it’s
important for each student to make the most of their stay abroad.
At the start of a UTP program, each student will receive between 25-50 points (semester or full
year). These points are to be used towards activities of interest and allows students to choose from
a wide variety of excursions without concern of planning or expenditures. With so many activities
at their fingertips and incredible opportunities to familiarize with life in America, students will
discover new potentials and truly experience the USA.
Located on the Saint John’s campus, the International Learning
Center houses a support team specifically for international students.
These students have a strong relationship with the UTP team as they
are available to assist with school activities, provide information, host
events, respond to host family concerns and much more. The UTP
team also works diligently to keep track of each students’ progress
from the day they arrive. We evaluate any and all challenges and
achievements students have faced in their classes or extracurricular
engagements. We value our open-door policy, and all students are
encouraged to solicit our advice and assistance when needed.
Our student library is equipped with many state-of-the-art
computers and a vast collection of hard copy resources. The library
provides a quiet, professional environment for students to work
independently on projects or read for their own enjoyment. Our
peer-tutoring services are based out of this facility, and students
can spend their free periods receiving extra instruction from their
fellow classmates in this serene and productive environment.
Every student at Saint John’s is assigned a college counselor
who helps them each year to plan their school schedules and to
understand their academic records and transcripts. These NYS
Certified College Counselors are available every day to answer
questions and offer assistance in searching and applying to colleges.
Students also have time designated in their class schedules to meet
with their counselors several times each school year. This ensures
that every student gets all the help they need in order to succeed
beyond their high school years.
Saint John’s offers 3 different Art Studios conducive to learning and
expressing a student’s creative mind and talents. With opportunities
such as photography, advanced drawing, CGI, graphic design
and advanced painting, there are many artistic fields to consider.
Students are encouraged to let their imaginations soar and explore
technology to produce television and radio shows created and run
by students (with a moderator). Students are able to report schoolwide
announcements and operate cameras, lighting and sound at a
professional level. Also located on the campus is the award-winning
Video Editing Lab. Using ultramodern software, such as Final Cut
Pro, students have the opportunity to produce videos and movies
for the Saint John’s YouTube channel, as well as productions for
school assemblies and classes.
Saint John’s offers an incredible dance progam for dancers of
all levels. Students are able to take a variety of different dance
courses and clubs to further their ability and knowledge of dance.
Saint John’s Dance Studio is located on-campus and attracts
both International and American students. Students even have
the opportunity to choreograph their own dances which they can
perform at school events!

Home Life
Our host families provide a safe, comfortable place to stay and act
as a ‘home away from home’ during a student’s time with us at Saint
John’s. Students are given the opportunity to live with a Long Island
family, right on the doorstep of New York City.
Long Island is home to a large community of American families, full of students and young
professionals. There is easy access within an hour by train to one of the most famous
cities in the world. Living with a family allows students the opportunity to practice their
English and enables them to gain a unique insight into the American way of life.
We respect the culture of every student who joins us, and our host families do the
same. Our students are also expected to be courteous in their family environment
by joining family meal-times and honoring the house rules set by their hosts. Our
host family homes are serviced by a school bus, or some families will drop their
students at school and provide pick-up transportation in the afternoons.
“We are so excited to be able to share our New York life with our two host
children. They are the newest members of our family. We spend a lot of time
together shopping, taking trips to see professional soccer matches, watching
movies or just sitting around the fire pit making smores. We bake together
and laugh together, and there is always something to do. We love the
holidays when we go into the city to see the Thanksgiving Day Parade or at
Christmas-time when we can see the beautiful decorations and ice-skating
at Rockefeller Center. We have become very close with our host children and
will always keep in touch when they go home again.”
“My exchange year is something I will never forget. My host family
made me feel at home. They are awesome! Now I have stories to tell and
friendships that will last forever. I hope to come back and visit them again!”
Accommodation
Our students generally participate in a homestay experience, living with an American family.
Students usually stay in a typical American home, which may consist of two stories, two or more
bedrooms and more than one bathroom. There will also be common living space and a kitchen.
You may receive your own bedroom, or you may share with a host brother or sister. A home on
Long Island usually has a yard to relax or play sports on, and typically there will be parks and
shops nearby.
Every home is different, so every homestay experience will be unique. Generally the more effort
the student makes to participate in the life of their host family, the more enriching his or her
experience will be.
“One of the best things about coming to America was my host family. I feel
very lucky to be a member of their family. I feel very lucky to be a part of their
household, and they made me feel like they were my own true family. They
helped me study, helped me to improve my English and encouraged me in all
situations
Dining
At School
Students at Saint John’s eat their lunch in
a large school cafeteria. You will be able to
choose from many different options, which
change throughout the week. You’ll be able to
sit with your friends and enjoy lunch together
on your break between classes.
At Home
Throughout your homestay program, you will
join your family for meals. During the week,
you’ll eat breakfast and dinner with your family.
On the weekends, you join your family for three
meals. Any special dietary requirements will be
noted. Your host family may even take you to
an international supermarket or help you find
some foods from your home country. Dining
as a family is a very important aspect of many
American households, and this time with your
host family will be a big part of your cultural
experience in the States.

WEEKEND LIFE
While studying at Saint John’s, students have many options
for weekend activities. They love using their free time to
explore the United States, and the UTP program gives them
the opportunity to experience high school life like true
Americans. Our students love studying here!
Host Families often invite their students to go on family trips and outings, such as
going to the beach or on family vacations. UTP also plans many exciting excursions
on the weekends. Our students have explored cities like Washington D.C., Boston and
NYC. We have also hosted ski trips in the mountains and campus tours at schools like
Harvard, MIT and Boston University!
When our students choose a weekend at home, Long Island never disappoints! Saint
John’s High School does its part in hosting many fun weekends as well. For instance,
our students always look forward to the annual Senior and Junior Prom dances,
and they love to attend weekend sporting events. There are also countless places
to explore for a student who wants to keep busy. Beaches, parks, shopping malls,
movie theatres and restaurants are just a few of Long Island’s many gems.
Some students choose to enjoy the relaxing side of Long Island home-life. Spending
a weekend in the company of their host families and newfound friends is never dull.
Joining in on barbeques, poolside lounging and family celebrations, our students
have made strong bonds and lasting friendships with their hosts.
“On the weekends, I get to relax from school life. I get a chance to hang out
with my friends, play soccer and basketball, and watch movies. I eat meals
with my host family, and in the summertime, they take me to go sailing around
Fire Island and to the Great South Bay. In the winter, we go skiing on the many
mountains in upstate New York. I also like singing karaoke with my classmates,
and I love going to get food afterwards in New York. You can get Italian, Chinese,
Vietnamese, Greek or Indian food all on the same street! Most importantly,
I got to experience American culture and see the sites, everything from the
Statue of Liberty and Times Square to the lighthouses and beaches on Long
Island. Life in New York is amazing!”
Life In New York
New York has many wonderful experiences to offer!
From Long Island to Manhattan, there is much to explore.
Central Park
Long Island is a suburban area located to the East of New York City, and Saint John’s is about a 1-hour train
ride to the heart of Manhattan! In these residential suburbs, students get to truly experience American homelife.
Long Island is known for its friendly neighborhoods, shopping malls and beautiful beaches. There are
also many public parks that offer outdoor activities such as bike trails, soccer fields and tennis courts. With
everything at their fingertips, our students love their comfortable life on Long Island!
New York City is one of the most exciting cities in the world and students never miss a chance to visit the ‘Big
Apple.’ The Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Central Park, The Brooklyn Bridge and Chinatown are just a few of
our students’ favorite spots to visit. With so much to see and do, many of our students say visits to the city are
some of their most memorable moments during their time in the USA. Whether our students go with a group of
friends to see the tourist sites, do some shopping or explore the different food and cultures, they always leave
satisfied with the New York City experience!
know so many other cultures. I loved going to LIttle Italy and Chinatown, and I
also loved to walk along Times Square at night. Central Park is amazing for a
sunny day, and Broadway is where I caught shows that no one wants to miss!”
