The JMU ISC is a dedicated facility just 

for international students. It is a place that 

welcomes you, supports you, and helps you 

to gain the skills, knowledge and perspectives 

you need to make the most of your new 

university life. 

Studying at the ISC means that you will get 

the best of both worlds: the full JMU/all- 

American campus experience, plus the care 

of a supportive community that will help you 

adapt and thrive as an international student. 

And when you’re ready, you’ll join your chosen 

mainstream degree program, confident, 

capable and fully prepared for the challenges of 

a JMU education.

WHAT IS AN ISC 

PATHWAY PROGRAM? 

Do I study English language? 

Yes. Depending on your language level, 

you may take the 2-, 3-, or 4-semester 

International Year One (IY1) program at 

the ISC, which will include academic and - 

academic and English courses. 

Do I study academic courses? 

Yes. You will take specialized academic courses 

that fully prepare you to enter the second 

year of your degree program. 

Do I get academic credits for my degree? 

Yes. You will get a minimum of 24 academic 

credits for your degree upon successful 

completion of the credit-bearing courses 

offered at the ISC. 

Do I get extra academic support 

and learn study skills? 

Yes. The ISC provides additional support 

to help you succeed academically. 

After the ISC, do I continue into the 

second year of my degree program? 

Yes. Upon completion of the ISC, you will move 

into the second year of your degree program. 

Will I graduate in four years? 

Yes. Depending on your program type, you 

will spend 8-16 months at the ISC and then 

the remaining three years (of your fouryear 

program) completely integrated into 

the University. 

Do I lose time at the ISC? 

No. You are able to graduate within four years, 

similar to direct entry students. Unlike studying 

an English-only program and then starting your 

first year of university studies, you can save 

both time and money at the ISC. 

Do I pay more to get an American degree? 

No. You save money by studying at the ISC 

since you will study both English and academic 

courses within the standard suggested duration 

to complete the given degree program. 

Is there an application fee? 

No. There is no JMU application fee for 

ISC applicants. 

Do I get a university issued I-20? 

Yes, JMU issues the I-20 for visa purposes. 

Do I take classes with American students? 

You will take cohort classes with other 

international students in the ISC, offering 

you dedicated attention and academic help. 

You will always take regular classes with 

American students once you finish the ISC and 

matriculate to full-time degree study at JMU.

The JMU International Study Center (ISC) is a place 

that welcomes you, supports you and helps you to 

gain the skills, knowledge and perspectives you 

need to make the most of your university life. 

INTERNATIONAL YEAR ONE 

The International Year One includes specialized 

courses in American culture, English for 

Academic Purposes and study skills to help you 

adjust to U.S. teaching methods and resources. 

You’ll also take courses from year one of your 

chosen degree programs, allowing you to earn 

24 credits, or more.

STUDENT SUCCESS CENTER 

Opened in September 2014, the center is the 

newest addition to JMU’s many resources that 

are dedicated to student success. It houses 

more than 20 support facilities including 

the University Health Center, the Office of 

Academic and Career Planning, and Learning 

Centers focused on helping students overcome 

challenges they may face. 

LIBRARIES 

The JMU Libraries include the Carrier Library, 

the Music Library and Rose Library. JMU 

librarians work with academic departments 

to provide subject-specific library instruction, 

research consultation, and to develop 

collections. The award-winning Information 

Literacy program provides students with skills 

for lifelong learning.

International Student Career Day (ISCD)

here at JMU! The $2 million planetarium offers

Places as a national treasure, the Quadrangle 

(Quad) has always been considered the heart of
