Finally the impact of a gendered, sexist and often
hostile culture in the media remains a significant
barrier. Nobody is immune, as studies of Hillary Clinton’s
US presidential campaigns and commentary on Theresa
May’s leadership have shown. Women with power
are often caricatured by journalists using sexist ‘cultural
shorthand’. Women in the public eye are subjected
to higher rates of online abuse than men and have
judged statutory responses to be inadequate, leading
to the founding in 2016 of cross-party initiative Reclaim
the Internet. Initiatives focusing on the media, in
the UK and internationally, are discussed elsewhere
in this report.
