I love the fact that My Only are doing
something new, it is such a rarity these days
for anybody to take chances, especially with
a debut E.P. and you can only applaud
them their cojones. Not that that has
anything at all to do with my loving this E.P,
that is entirely down to their mixture of an
Emo Punk with raw vocals, and a battering
ram of drums and bass that seem to want
to push you through the floor and make
your ears bleed. And then of course they do
something different, and a quieter passage
makes you think rather than just try to
survive, and the tortured sounding vocals of
a moment ago are suddenly tender, or at
least tenderised, beautiful and yet primal
too.
This is something hard to pull-off with such
a deftness of touch and you really do have
to remind yourself just how early in their
game they are.
And then you hear Saboteur and the
world changes with a shredded passion
sitting on top of Billy Bragg meets
Smashing Pumpkins delicacy, building and
building into some crashing, trashing
monster of a tear jerking horror-filled,
pain-drenched movie of a life you really
don’t want to live, and then it ends. And
you mourn it immediately, hating yourself
for falling for such an easy self-loathing.
This is heady stuff, and one day we’ll all
look back and claim we always knew just
how big they could be. This is a prequel
to their Gish or Ritual De Lo Habitual, this
is a special moment you really need to
discover before it is too late.
